The ability of a designer – for example, interior designer, architect, landscape architect, etc. – to design for a particular target group (user and/or clients) is potentially enhanced through more targeted studies relating colour in situ. The study outlined in this paper involved participant responses to five achromatic scenes of different built environments prior to viewing the same scenes in colour. Importantly, in this study the participants, who were young designers, came to realise that colour potentially holds the power to impact on the identity of an architectural form, an interior space and/or particular elements such as doorways, furniture settings, etc., as well as influence atmosphere. Prior to discussing the study, a selection of other research, which links colour to meaning and emotions, introduces how people understand and/or feel in relation to colour. For example, yellow is said to be connected to happiness; or red evokes feelings of anger. Secondly, the need for spatial designers to understand colour in context is raised. An overview of the study is then provided. It was found that the impact of colour includes a shift in perception of aspects such as its atmosphere and youthfulness. Through studio/class discussions it was also noted the predicted age of the place, the function, and in association, the potential users when colour was added (or deleted) were often challenged.

One-pot preparation of shell-type silver-gold bimetallic nanostructures with hollow interiors and bearing nanospikes, based on colloid seed-engaged replacement reaction and colloid-mediated deposition reactions, has been reported. Heating-induced evolution of Ag-Au bimetallic nanoshells can lead to spontaneous production of nanospikes on the colloid surface. The hollow interior structure and bimetallic nature of the as-prepared colloids are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Given a relation α (a binary sociogram) and an a priori equivalence relation π, both on the same set of individuals, it is interesting to look for the largest equivalence πo that is contained in and is regular with respect to α. The equivalence relation πo is called the regular interior of π with respect to α. The computation of πo involves the left and right residuals, a concept that generalized group inverses to the algebra of relations. A polynomial-time procedure is presented (Theorem 11) and illustrated with examples. In particular, the regular interior gives meet in the lattice of regular equivalences: the regular meet of regular equivalences is the regular interior of their intersection. Finally, the concept of relative regular equivalence is defined and compared with regular equivalence.

Habitat loss and fragmentation on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, has resulted in a mosaic of forest patches, forest edges abutted by agricultural land and linear habitat strips amidst a human-modified land matrix. To examine the use of forest elements by the avifauna in this landscape, bird populations were sampled along fixed transects established within forest interiors, on forest edges and along forested roadsides. A total of 60 species was recorded during this study, five of which were introduced. Species richness and diversity did not differ significantly between the three habitat elements, but avifaunal composition varied considerably. The species assemblages of all habitat elements differed significantly, with forest interiors and roadsides showing the greatest difference and forest interiors and forest edges showing the least degree of difference. Forest-dependent bird species used both interiors and edges. Interiors differed from edges and roadsides in having lower abundances of open country species, predatory species and introduced species. A clear gradient of change in bird communities from forest interiors to roadside vegetation was observed. This study suggests that the interiors of medium-sized (<1 000 ha) patches may play an important role in conserving bird biodiversity on a local level as they provide refuge for forest-dependent native species in extensively cleared landscapes.

Large Igneous Provinces are exceptional intraplate igneous events throughout Earth’s history. Their significance and potential global impact is related to the total volume of magma intruded and released during these geologically brief events (peak eruptions are often within 1-5 Myrs duration) where millions to tens of millions of cubic kilometers of magma are produced. In some cases, at least 1% of the Earth’s surface has been directly covered in volcanic rock, being equivalent to the size of small continents with comparable crustal thicknesses. Large Igneous Provinces are thus important, albeit episodic episodes of new crust addition. However, most magmatism is basaltic so that contributions to crustal growth will not always be picked up in zircon geochronology studies that better trace major episodes of extension-related silicic magmatism and the silicic Large Igneous Provinces. Much headway has been made on our understanding of these anomalous igneous events over the last 25 years, driving many new ideas and models. This includes their: 1) global spatial and temporal distribution, with a long-term average of one event approximately every 20 Myrs, but a clear clustering of events at times of supercontinent break-up – Large Igneous Provinces are thus an integral part of the Wilson cycle and are becoming an increasingly important tool in reconnecting dispersed continental fragments; 2) compositional diversity that in part reflects their crustal setting of ocean basins, and continental interiors and margins where in the latter setting, LIP magmatism can be silicicdominant; 3) mineral and energy resources with major PGE and precious metal resources being hosted in these provinces, as well as magmatism impacting on the hydrocarbon potential of volcanic basins and rifted margins through enhancing source rock maturation, providing fluid migration pathways, and trap formation; 4) biospheric, hydrospheric and atmospheric impacts, with Large Igneous Provinces now widely regarded as a key trigger mechanism for mass extinctions, although the exact kill mechanism(s) are still being resolved; 5) role in mantle geodynamics and thermal evolution of the Earth, by potentially recording the transport of material from the lower mantle or core-mantle boundary to the Earth's surface and being a fundamental component in whole mantle convection models; and 6) recognition on the inner planets where the lack of plate tectonics and erosional processes and planetary antiquity means that the very earliest record of LIP events during planetary evolution may be better preserved than on Earth.

Given the lack of proper constraints in understanding earthquake mechanisms in the cratonic interiors and the general absence of good quality database, here we reassess the seismic hazard in the province of Kerala, a part of the aEuro cent stable continental interioraEuro cent, based on an improved historical and instrumental database. The temporal pattern of the current seismicity suggests that > 60% of the microtremors in Kerala occurs with a time lag after the peak rainfall, indicating that hydroseismicity may be a plausible model to explain the low-level seismicity in this region. Further, an increment in overall seismicity rate in the region in the recent years is explained as due to increased anthropogenic activities, which includes changes in hydrological pathways as a consequence of rapid landscape changes. Our analyses of the historical database eliminate a few events that are ascribed to this region; this exercise has also led to identification of a few events, not previously noted. The improved historical database essentially suggests that the central midland region is more prone to seismic activity compared to other parts of Kerala. This region appears to have generated larger number of significant earthquakes; the most prominent being the multiple events (doublets) of 1856 and 1953, whose magnitudes are comparable to that of the 2000/2001 (central Kerala) events. Occurrences of these historical events and the recent earthquakes, and the local geology indicative of pervasive faulting as shown by widely distributed pseudotachylite veins suggest that the NNW-SSE trending faults in central midland Kerala may host discrete potentially active sources that may be capable of generating light to moderate size earthquakes. The frequency of earthquakes in central Kerala evident from the historical database requires that the seismic codes stipulated for this region are made mandatory.

Over 20 years, successive openings and closures of the Sumilon Island marine reserve to fishers have provided unique opportunities to examine the effects of marine reserves on populations and communities of fishes and upon local fisheries. The history of the reserve also highlights the problems and frustrations of educating and convincing people of the need for rational management of renewable marine resources. Yet, it is a symbol of hope in that it has provided a unique example of the potential benefits of marine reserves in fisheries management, particularly in the developing world.

Even among forest specialists, species-specific responses to anthropogenic forest fragmentation may vary considerably. Some appear to be confined to forest interiors, and perceive a fragmented landscape as a mosaic of suitable fragments and hostile matrix. Others, however, are able to make use of matrix habitats and perceive the landscape in shades of grey rather than black-and-white. We analysed data of 42 Chiroxiphia caudata (Blue Manakin), 10 Pyriglena leucoptera (White-shouldered Fire-eye) and 19 Sclerurus scansor (Rufous-breasted Leaftosser) radio-tracked in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil between 2003 and 2005. We illustrate how habitat preferences may determine how species respond to or perceive the landscape structure. We compared available with used habitat to develop a species-specific preference index for each of six habitat classes. All three species preferred old forest, but relative use of other classes differed significantly. S. scansor perceived great contrast between old forest and matrix, whereas the other two species perceived greater habitat continuity. For conservation planning, our study offers three important messages: (1) some forest specialist species are able to persist in highly fragmented landscapes; (2) some forest species may be able to make use of different anthropogenic habitat types to various degrees; whereas (3) others are restricted to the remaining forest fragments. Our study suggests species most confined to forest interiors to be considered as potential umbrella species for landscape-scale conservation planning.

A variety of human-induced disturbances such as forest fragmentation and recovery after deforestation for pasture or agricultural activities have resulted in a complex landscape mosaic in the Una region of northeastern Brazil. Using a set of vegetation descriptors, we investigated the main structural changes observed in forest categories that comprise the major components of the regional landscape and searched for potential key descriptors that could be used to discriminate among different forest categories. We assessed the forest structure of five habitat categories defined as (I) interiors and (2) edges of large fragments of old-growth forest (>1000 ha), (3) interiors and (4) edges of small forest fragments (<100 ha), and (5) early secondary forests. Forest descriptors used here were: frequency of herbaceous lianas and woody climbers, number of standing dead trees, number of fallen trunks, litter depth, number of pioneer plants (early secondary and shade-intolerant species), vertical foliage stratification profile and distribution Of trees in different diameter classes. Edges and interiors of forest fragments were significantly different only in the number of standing dead trees. Secondary forests and edges of fragments showed differences in litter depth, fallen trunks and number of pioneer trees, and secondary forests were significantly different from fragment interiors in the number of standing dead trees and the number of pioneer trees. Horizontal and vertical structure evaluated via ordination analysis showed that fragment interiors, compared to secondary forests, were characterized by a greater number of medium (25-35 cm) and large (35-50 cm) trees and smaller numbers of thin trees (5-10 cm). There was great heterogeneity at the edges of small and large fragments, as these sites were distributed along almost the entire gradient. Most interiors of large and small fragments presented higher values of foliage densities at higher strata ( 15-20 m and at 20-25 m height), and lower densities at 1-5 m. All secondary forests and some fragment edge sites showed an opposite tendency. A discriminant function highlighted differences among forest categories, with transects of large fragment interiors and secondary forests representing two extremes along a disturbance gradient determined by foliage structure (densities at 15-20 m and 20-25 m), with the edges of both large and small fragments and the interiors of small fragments scattered across the gradient. The major underlying processes determining patterns of forest disturbance in the study region are discussed, highlighting the importance of forest fragments, independently of its size, as forests recovery after clear cut show a greatly distinct structure, with profound implications on fauna movements. Recent developments have highlighted the importance of forest amount at large spatial scales and of matrix quality for ecological processes in remnants. These developments, in turn, suggest the potential for reducing biodiversity loss through the maintenance of a high percentage of forest combined with sensitive management of anthropogenic areas. We conducted a multi-taxa survey to evaluate the potential for biodiversity maintenance in an Atlantic forest landscape that presented a favorable context from a theoretical perspective (high proportion of mature forest partly surrounded by structurally complex matrices). We sampled ferns, butterflies, frogs, lizards, bats, small mammals and birds in interiors and edges of large and small mature forest remnants and two matrices (second-growth forests and shade cacao plantations), as well as trees in interiors of small and large remnants. By considering richness, abundance and composition of forest specialists and generalists, we investigated the biodiversity value of matrix habitats (comparing them with interiors of large remnants for all groups except tree), and evaluated area (for all groups) and edge effects (for all groups except trees) in mature forest remnants. our results suggest that in landscapes comprising high amounts of mature forest and low contrasting matrices: (1) shade cacao plantations and second-growth forests harbor an appreciable number of forest specialists; (2) most forest specialist assemblages are not affected by area or edge effects, while most generalist assemblages proliferate at edges of small remnants. Nevertheless, differences in tree assemblages, especially among smaller trees, Suggest that observed patterns are unlikely to be stable over time. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This Letter reports on the synthesis of Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled structures and compositions via a galvanic replacement reaction between Ag NPs and AuCl4(aq)- followed by the investigation of their optical and catalytic properties. Our results showed the formation of porous walls, hollow interiors and increased Au content in the Ag-Au NPs as the volume of AuCl4(aq)- employed in the reaction was increased. These variations led to a red shift and broadening of the SPR peaks and an increase of up to 10.9-folds in the catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol relative to Ag NPs. Las casas del siglo XX construidas al borde del mar –escenario único y origen de su expresión- siguen la topografía del suelo que habitan en su descenso al agua, y organizan espacios que obtienen miradas al horizonte marino. El horizonte nos confronta a lo desconocido. La vista del mar incita al deseo de recorrerlo, al deseo de viajar. Con origen en el otium romano, la presencia del agua define un modo de vida apacible –epicúreo- que los viajeros de la arquitectura -que nos acompañan en la tesis- traducen en sus refugios más íntimos. Experimentan con los cambios en los conceptos y en las técnicas, que se trasladan fácilmente a la arquitectura de la casa al borde del agua desde los inicios del Movimiento Moderno. Sus espacios del habitar frente al mar nos permiten descubrir estrategias comunes en sus respuestas más modernas. El arquitecto ante el proyecto frente al mar llega a la ubicación elegida, mira hacia el horizonte, y desplazándose ladera arriba se coloca en un punto estratégico que elige; después, delante de su tablero, recorre el camino inverso, coloca el lugar y sobre él dibuja los elementos que configurarán los espacios de la casa buscando esa mirada al mar. Las situaciones y ubicaciones posibles son infinitas; se definen algunas consonancias espaciales comunes en los suelos que se ocupan debidas a la presencia del mar que asociamos entre sí. De la comparación entre todas las casas -emblemas del XX-, surgen múltiples variantes de la mirada y de espacios al abierto, y modos de fabricar entornos con criterios comunes para dominar la visión del mar. Interiores que se abren al panorama, espacios cuyas ventanas buscan su mirada en la extensión del horizonte, rescisiones y aperturas. Reconocemos condicionantes en el territorio a los que las villas responden, categorías arquitectónicas que dan respuesta frente al mar en la búsqueda del moderno, la topografía, la mirada y el espacio al abierto. Las casas comparten la idea del dominio del paisaje desde el punto más alto, y en algunos suelos se invierte la tipología por la topografía, confirmando así un criterio común basado en la lectura del suelo como consecuencia de la búsqueda del espacio de la mirada. Los espacios al abierto se significan en todas ellas, son espacios al -aire libre- abiertos, unos envueltos, otros porticados, puertas del horizonte que se abren al exterior, en el techo de la casa, otros cubiertos y abiertos, espacios entre interior y exterior, en plataformas con bancales o patios envolventes, recintos o habitaciones abiertas. Descubrimos un logro del XX en los espacios positivos o negativos que traducen o juegan con el entorno, que ocupan o sustraen de los contornos construidos y que obtienen espacios intermedios en la búsqueda de la relación con el mar. Las herramientas que se utilizan son los dibujos de los autores, de las casas visitadas, el elenco de viajeros y sus viajes, el conocimiento desde el estudio de los proyectos. A través de la comparación por aproximaciones parciales, los dibujos nos definen la mirada al mar, el modo de ocupación y la forma de relación con el paisaje. La arquitectura del habitar frente al mar en el XX, hecha para y por arquitectos, topografía el suelo y construye la mirada, fabricando espacios al abierto en la relación entre la casa y el entorno marítimo. ABSTRACT Houses of the 20th century built by the sea – a unique setting which gives rise to their expression – follow the topography of the land they occupy in its descent towards the sea, and they organize spaces which give views of the maritime horizon. The horizon brings us face to face with the unknown. The sea view provokes a desire to cross it, to travel. The presence of the sea defines a peaceful, epicurean way of life, with origins in the Roman otium, which architectural travellers – who accompany us through the thesis – translate into their most intimate retreats. They experiment with changes in concepts and techniques, which are easily transferred to the architecture of the seaside house since the beginnings of the Modern Movement. Their living spaces allow us to discover common strategies in the most modern responses. The architect with a seaside project arrives at the site, looks towards the horizon, then walks uphill and chooses a strategic point; then with his drawing board he retraces his steps, he sets the position and then draws in the elements that make up the house that seeks a sea view. The number of potential situations and locations is infinite; certain common spatial accordances are defined in land which is occupied due to the presence of the sea. Comparison of all the houses – 20th century emblems – throws up multiple variations of view and open spaces, and ways of creating settings with common criteria so as to command the vision of the sea. Interiors which open up to the panorama, spaces whose windows seek their view in the expanse of the horizon, openings and closures. We recognise determinant factors in the territory to which the villas respond, architectural categories which give a seaside solution to the search for the modern, the topography, the view, and the open space. The houses share the idea of dominating the landscape from the highest point, and in some areas typology and topography are inverted, thus confirming a common criteria based on the reading of the ground as a conse quence of the search for the view space. Open spaces stand out in all the villas – spaces open to the outdoor air - some are wrapped, some arcaded, doors to the horizon which open up to the exterior, on the roof of the house. There are open and covered spaces, spaces between the exterior and interior, on platforms with banks and surrounding patios, enclosures and open rooms. We discover an achievement of the 20th century in the positive and negative spaces which translate and play with the setting, which occupy or are extracted from built contours and which obtain intermediate spaces in the search for the relationship with the sea. The tools used are the author’s drawings of the houses visited, the cast of travelling companions and their travels, the knowledge gained from study of the projects. Through comparison by means of partial approaches, the drawings define the view of the sea, the occupation mode and the way of relating to the landscape. Architecture for living by the sea in the 20th century, carried out both by and for the architects, shapes the land and constructs the view, creating open spaces in the relationship between the house and the sea surroundings.
