In this paper, a new proportional-navigation guidance law, called retro-proportional-navigation, is proposed. The guidance law is designed to intercept targets that are of higher speeds than the interceptor. This is a typical scenario in a ballistic target interception. The capture region analysis for both proportional-navigation and retro-proportional-navigation guidance laws are presented. The study shows that, at the cost of a higher intercept time, the retro-proportional-navigation guidance law demands lower terminal lateral acceleration than proportional navigation and can intercept high-velocity targets from many initial conditions that the classical proportional navigation cannot. Also, the capture region with the retro-proportional-navigation guidance law is shown to be larger compared with the classical proportional-navigation guidance law.

What began as a general desire to share messages about processes, technologies, lives and opportunities – among farming and fishing communities and those who work with them – has evolved into a network that shares meanings and lessons learnt. Now instead of relying on core funding or catalytic support, the STREAM Initiative is self-funded through the services its network provides to academic, development and other organizations. Pathogenic mycobacteria induce the formation of complex cellular aggregates called granulomas that are the hallmark of tuberculosis. Here we examine the development and consequences of vascularization of the tuberculous granuloma in the zebrafish-Mycobacterium marinum infection model, which is characterized by organized granulomas with necrotic cores that bear striking resemblance to those of human tuberculosis. Using intravital microscopy in the transparent larval zebrafish, we show that granuloma formation is intimately associated with angiogenesis. The initiation of angiogenesis in turn coincides with the generation of local hypoxia and transcriptional induction of the canonical pro-angiogenic molecule Vegfaa. Pharmacological inhibition of the Vegf pathway suppresses granuloma-associated angiogenesis, reduces infection burden and limits dissemination. Moreover, anti-angiogenic therapies synergize with the first-line anti-tubercular antibiotic rifampicin, as well as with the antibiotic metronidazole, which targets hypoxic bacterial populations. Our data indicate that mycobacteria induce granuloma-associated angiogenesis, which promotes mycobacterial growth and increases spread of infection to new tissue sites. We propose the use of anti-angiogenic agents, now being used in cancer regimens, as a host-targeting tuberculosis therapy, particularly in extensively drug-resistant disease for which current antibiotic regimens are largely ineffective.

Intramolecular Heck cyclisation of (E)-vinyl bromides leads to indolizidines, related to pumiliotoxin alkaloids, in which the stereochemistry of the trisubstituted double bond undergoes inversion. A cyclopropyl intermediate, which is believed to be responsible for the double bond inversion, has been intercepted by forcing an 'early' beta-hydride elimination on this species. The relative stereochemistry of this cyclopropyl intermediate determines the regioselectivity of the final beta-hydride elimination. In this case all three beta-hydride eliminations were stereochemically permitted, giving rise to a mixture of three isomeric products, differing in the position of a double bond. (Z)-Vinyl bromides were found to be less reactive than (E)-vinyl bromides, but on cyclisation gave the required conjugated diene, with inversion of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry, as the sole reaction product. This methodology will allow rapid stereoselective access to the diene-based pumiliotoxin alkaloids.

This group, which is concerned with the applications of mathematics to agricultural science, was formed in 1970 and has since met at approximately yearly intervals in London for one-day meetings. The thirty-ninth meeting of the group, chaired by Professor N. Crout of the University of Nottingham, was held in the Kohn Centre at the Royal Society, 6 Carlton House Terrace, London on Friday, 30 March 2007 when the following papers were read.

Simulations of oil yield and quality are presented for N–S oriented, hedgerow olive orchards of a range of structures (viz. canopy depth, canopy width, canopy slope and row spacing) using responses of yield and quality parameters to solar irradiance on canopy walls measured in a range of orchards, cv. Arbequina, in Spain. Results reveal that orchard yield of hedgerows of rectangular shape reaches a maximum when canopy depth equals alley width (row spacing−canopy width) and decreases at wider spacing, and/or with wider canopies, as the length of productive row decreases per unit area. Maximum yields for 4-m deep canopies were 2885 kg ha−1 at 1-m width and 5-m row spacing, 2400 kg ha−1 at 2-m width and 6-m spacing, and 2050 kg ha−1 at 3-m width and 7-m spacing. Illumination of canopies can be increased by applying slopes to form rhomboidal hedgerows. Substantial yield advantage can be achieved, especially for wide hedgerows, partly by closer row spacing that increases row length per unit area. By comparison, responses to latitude in the range 30–40◦ are small and do not warrant different row spacing. Oil quality parameters also respond to orchard structure. Responses are presented for oleic and palmitic acid, stability, and maturity index. Oleic acid content declines as alley spacing increases and is smaller, shallow than in wide, deep canopies. Palmitic acid content, stability, and maturity index increase with row alley spacing and are greater in narrow, shallow than in wide, deep canopies.
