Heparin, a sulfated polysaccharide, was the first compound used as an anticoagulant and antithrombotic agent. Due to their structural characteristics, also has great potential anti-inflammatory, though such use is limited in inflammation because of their marked effects on coagulation. The occurrence of heparin-like compounds that exhibit anticoagulant activity decreased in aquatic invertebrates, such as crab Goniopsis cruentata, sparked interest for the study of such compounds as anti-inflammatory drugs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential modulator of heparin-like compound extracted from Goniopsis cruentata in inflammatory events, coagulation, and to evaluate some aspects of its structure. The heparin-type compound had a high degree of N-sulphation in its structure, being able to reduce leukocyte migration into the peritoneal cavity at lower doses compared to heparin and diclofenac sodium (anti-inflammatory commercial). Furthermore, it was also able to inhibit the production of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor alpha by activated macrophages, inhibited the activation of the enzyme neutrophil elastase in low concentrations and showed a lower anticoagulant effect in high doses as compared to porcine mucosal heparin. Because of these observations, the compound extracted from crab Goniopsis cruentata can be used as a structural model for future anti-inflammatory agents

A qualidade da água e a fauna composta pelos macroinvertebrados aquáticos do Igarapé do Mindú, o qual tem suas nascentes em áreas florestadas e atravessa a cidade de Manaus (Amazonas, Brasil), foram estudadas de 1993 a 1995. Desmatamentos e ocupação das áreas ao longo do igarapé, juntamente com a poluição orgânica doméstica causaram drásticas alterações nas características físico-químicas das águas e na composição da fauna aquática. Assim, temperatura da água, condutividade elétrica, pH e sedimentos em suspensão aumentaram significativamente, enquanto que os valores de oxigênio dissolvido na água diminuíram. Esses fatores de alterações, associados com a redução natural da velocidade de corrente d'água e aumento da radiação solar, resultaram em eutrofização e mudança marcante da fauna bentônica.

The condition factor is a parameter which acts as a general indicator of the "well-being" of a species, and it can be obtained through the analysis of width vs. weight relationships. The present work aims to investigate size vs. weight relationship and the condition factor of the crab Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803). The study area was the Mundaú/Manguaba estuarine complex, Maceió, state of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil. Samplings were monthly accomplished from August 2007 to July 2008. A total of 626 individuals were analyzed, being 309 males and 317 females. Males were larger and heavier than females, what is expected in many brachyuran. The growth was positive allometric to both males (b = 3.42) and females (b = 3.30), not obeying the "cube law". The condition factor of female was higher than that of male crabs, probably due to the gonad weight of females. It also varied seasonally for both sexes, being higher in the autumn and winter in males, and in the autumn and spring in females, and related to the molt and period of spawning intensification.

This study provides information concerning the feeding behaviour of Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803), through analysis of stomach contents according to demographic categories. Collections were carried out monthly from May 2005 through April 2006 in a subtropical estuary on the southeastern Brazilian coast (23 degrees 29'24 '' S 45 degrees 10'12 '' W). The crabs were collected by hand, with a 2-hour sampling effort by three people. In the laboratory, the crabs were sexed and measured for greatest carapace width, and grouped into demographic categories: adult males, juvenile males, adult females, juvenile females, and ovigerous females. For the fullness analysis, the stomachs were grouped into two categories: (1) E = Empty, with no food; and (2) F = Full, whether partially filled or totally. The frequency-of-occurrence method was used to characterize feeding behaviour, and the demographic categories recognired were compared. We obtained stomachs from 171 adult males, 69 juvenile males, 136 adult females, 72 juvenile females, and 41 ovigerous females, of which 85.6% were full. of the eight food items recorded, sediment was the most frequent, and unidentified material was the least. Goniopsis cruentata can be characterized as a generalist feeder, exploiting most of the food items available in the mangrove swamps. In spite of this generalist behaviour, the dominant presence of sediment suggests that G. cruentata is primarily a detritivore that exploits particulate organic matter from microbial biodegradation, one of the most important mangrove functions. The trophic role of this crab in the ecosystem showed no significant differences among the demographic categories, and seems to be wider than those observed for sesarmid and ocypodid mangrove crabs. These ecosystem engineers may occupy different positions in the trophic chains of estuarine environments.

The present study reports the use of biomarkers analyzes in mangrove root crab Goniopsis cruentata tissues to assess the environmental quality of two tropical estuarine areas. Animals from Ceará River estuary presented inhibition of ChE and GST enzymatic activities and higher rates of DNA damage with respect to those sampled in a pristine environment. G. cruentata appears to represent a proper species to monitor the quality of tropical estuaries. Since Ceará River is a legally protected area, this survey highlight the needs to implement actions to control pollution loads and improve the protection of natural ecosystems and resources. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A colonização por invertebrados aquáticos no detrito de Salvinia herzogii foi estudada em dois lagos rasos subtropicais de diferentes estados tróficos (eutrófico e oligotrófico) localizados no campus Carreiros da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, extremo sul do Brasil. Aproximadamente 6g (peso úmido) de S. herzogii foram incubados em experimentos com litter bags (30 X 20 cm com 10 mm de malha) e a decomposição do detrito acompanhada durante 110 dias (entre setembro de 2008 e janeiro de 2009), período no qual o detrito decompôs-se cerca de 95%. Quatro réplicas foram retiradas após os intervalos de 1, 30, 60, 90 e 110 dias de incubação e o detrito foi limpo em água corrente sob peneira de 250µm de malha para que fossem retidos os organismos e depois fixados em álcool 80%. As plantas depois de limpas foram secas à 60ºC por 72 horas para obtenção do peso seco, depois trituradas, para as análises de nitrogênio e fósforo total e para obtenção do peso seco livre de cinzas, equivalente a porcentagem de massa remanescente (%R). Os invertebrados foram identificados até o menor nível taxonômico possível e depositados na coleção de Invertebrados Límnicos – ICB - FURG. Para cada amostra foram calculadas a riqueza e a densidade de táxons, os índices de diversidade de Shannon - Wiener (H’), homogeneidade de Pielou (J). Para determinar qual grupo de invertebrados foi mais importante para a estruturação da comunidade em cada lago, foi realizada a análise de espécies indicadoras (indicator especies analysis). Um total de 32.399 organismos distribuídos em 38 táxons foram registrados para os lagos estudados. Dezoito táxons foram comuns entre os lagos em cada experimento. Um total de 1.449.612 ind. 100g PS no ambiente eutrófico e 372.380 ind. 100g PS para o ambiente oligotrófico foi registrado (p=0,4771). O táxon mais abundante encontrado para o lago eutrófico foi Goeldichironomus (Chironomidae; 81% de todos os organismos coletados), enquanto queno lago oligotrófico, o táxon mais abundante foi Caenis (Caenidae; 29,1% de todos os organismos coletados). A colonização do detrito foi rápida, nas primeiras 24 horas foram registrados 10 táxons nos lagos eutrófico e oligotrófico, sendo os predadores o grupo dominante (52 e 70%, respectivamente) neste período. Durante o período do experimento,no lago eutrófico, os coletores-catadores foram os mais abundantes (91,2 % do número total de organismos), seguido de coletores-filtradores (4,7 %) e predadores (3,5 %). No lago oligotrófico, os coletores-catadores foram os mais abundantes (34,1 % do número total de organismos), seguido de predadores (26,8 %), raspadores (24,9 %) e fragmentadores (10,5 %). O Índice de diversidade acompanhou os aumentos de densidade durante os experimentos, sendo que o valor máximo observado foi no lago oligotrófico(H’=2,31) no 60º dia de incubação, enquanto que o menor valor foi registrado para o lago eutrófico (H’=0,19) no 110º dia de incubação. A taxa de decomposição de S. herzogii foi diferente no lago eutrófico (k = 0,019; R2 = 0,88) e oligotrófico (k = 0,021; R2 = 0,81),porém essa diferença não foi significativa (ANCOVA; F = 6,38 e p = 0,6755).

Mangroves are under threat worldwide by deforestation, overexploitation and climate change. The availability and consumption rates of propagules influence mangrove recruitment and can play a major role in their viability and restoration potential. We assess the potential trophic competition between Goniopsis cruentata and Ucides cordatus, two dominant crab species in the New World, by experimentally comparing herbivory levels between forest stands with varying crab abundance. We hypothesize that herbivory rates (HR) of G. cruentata will be lower in mangroves where it coexists with U. cordatus than in mangroves where U. cordatus is absent. The removal of Rhizophora mangle propagules was very rapid, and HR were overall high and increased through time. However, HR did not differ significantly between mangroves with and without the potential trophic competitor U. cordatus. Our study did not support previous literature indications of food competition between these two crab species, which seem to have developed strategies for competition avoidance.

Por possuírem ciclos de vida curtos, os macroinvertebrados aquáticos podem responder rapidamente às modificações ambientais, alterando a estrutura das suas populações e comunidades. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar se há relação entre a composição de macroinvertebrados aquáticos associados a bancos de Eichhornia crassipes o gradiente de condutividade elétrica da água e a biomassa das raízes destes bancos. No pico da cheia de 2005, 21 bancos de macrófitas aquáticas flutuantes dominados por E. crassipes foram amostrados no rio Negro (baixa condutividade < 30 µS cm-1), na confluência entre os rios Negro e Solimões (média condutividade > 30 µS cm-1 e < 50 µS cm-1), e no rio Solimões (alta condutividade > 50 µS cm-1). Foram encontrados 1707 macroinvertebrados aquáticos, distribuídos em 14 ordens e 35 famílias. A abundância de invertebrados aquáticos foi maior em bancos na confluência das águas. O aumento da biomassa das raízes de E. crassipes levou a um aumento da abundância e da riqueza de famílias de macroinvertebrados. A abundância dos coletores-catadores, coletores-filtradores e raspadores variou com o tipo de água, e apenas a abundância dos coletores-catadores e coletores-filtradores variou em função da biomassa das raízes. A riqueza de famílias dos raspadores variou em função do tipo de água. A organização da comunidade depende do gradiente de biomassa de raízes, indicando a importância da estrutura do hábitat para o estabelecimento dos macroinvertebrados.

RESUMO O impacto dos parques eólicos sobre as aves é um dos temas menos estudados no Brasil, o que contrasta com a importância dessa nova fonte de energia renovável. O presente estudo buscou caracterizar a composição e dinâmica ecológica das espécies de aves residentes e migratórias presentes na área da Usina Eólica da Pedra do Sal, em Parnaíba, Estado do Piauí. O estudo foi desenvolvido por meio de trinta e três amostragens distribuídas em dois ciclos sazonais completos (setembro de 2011 a agosto de 2013), através do método do ponto de escuta, dispostos na base de cada um dos aerogeradores. Foram registrados 6.843 contatos de aves pertencentes a 67 espécies distribuídas em 22 famílias e 13 ordens, e a espécie com maior número de contatos foi a batuíra-de-coleira (Charadrius collaris). As categorias tróficas predominantes foram as das aves insetívoras, representadas por 18 espécies, seguidas pelas aves que se alimentam de invertebrados aquáticos (17 espécies). A maioria das aves registradas é de ambiente aquático. Durante o desenvolvimento desse estudo não foram registradas colisões entre as aves e os aerogeradores.

The author studied, the horizontal and vertical distribution of most common part of the flora and fauna of the bay of Guanabara at Rio de Janeiro. In this paper the eulittoral, poly, meso and oligohaline regions were localised and studied; and the first chart of its distribution was presented (fig. 2). The salinity of superficial waters was established through determinations based on 30 trips inside the buy for collecting biological materials. Some often 409 determinations which were previous reported together with the present ones served for the eleboration of a salinity map of the bay of Guanabara (fig. 1). This map of fig. 2 shows the geographic locations of the water regions. EULITTORAL WATER REGIME Fig. 3 shows the diagram scheme of fauna and flora of this regime. Sea water salinity 34/1.000, density mean 1.027, transparent greenish waters, sea coast with moderate bursting waves. Limpid sea shore with white sand, gneiss with the big barnacle Tetraclita squamosa var. stalactifera (Lam. Pilsbry. Vertical distributions: barna¬cles layers with a green region in which are present the oyster Ostrea pa-rasitica L., the barnacles Tetraclita, Chthamalus, Balanus tintinnabulum var. tintinnabulum (L.) e var. antillensis Pilsbry in connection with several mollusca and the sea beatle Isopoda Lygia sp. Covered by water and exposed to air by the tidal ritms, there is a stratum of brown animals that is the layer of mussels Mytilus perna L., with others brown and chestnut animals : the Crustacea Pachygrapsus, the little crab Porcellana sp., the stone crab Me-nippe nodifrons Stimpson, the sea stars Echinaster brasiliensis (Mull. & Tr.), Astropecten sp. and the sea anemones Actinia sp. Underneath and never visible there is a subtidal region with green tubular algae of genus Codium and amidst its bunches the sea urchin Lycthchinus variegatus (Agass.) walks and more deeply there are numerous sand-dollars Encope emarginata (Leske). The microplancton of this regime is Ceratiumplancton. POLYHALINE WATER REGIMB Water almost sea water, but directly influenced by continental lands, with rock salts dissolved and in suspension. Salinity: 33 to 32/1.000. This waters endure the actions of the popular nicknamed «water of the hill» (as the waters of mesohaline and oligohaline regimes), becoming suddenly reddish during several hours. That pheno¬menon returns several times in the year and come with great mortality of fishes. In these waters, according to Dr. J. G. FARIA there are species of Protozoa : Peridinea, the Glenoidinium trochoideum St., followed by its satellites which he thinks that they are able to secret toxical substances which can slaughter some species of fishes. In these «waters of the hill» was found a species of Copepoda the Charlesia darwini. In August 1946 the west shore of the Guanabara was plenty of killed fishes occupying a area of 8 feet large by 3 nautical miles of lenght. The enclosure for catching fishes in the rivers mouthes presents in these periods mass dead fishes. The phenomenon of «waters of the hill» appears with the first rains after a period of long dryness. MESOHALINE WATER REGIME Fig. 4 shows the the diagramm scheme. Salt or brackish water from 30 to 17/1.000 salinity, sometimes until 10/1.000. Turbid waters with mud in suspension, chestnut, claveyous waters; shore dirty black mud without waving bursting; the waters are warmer and shorner than those of the polihaline regime. Mangrove shore with the mangrove trees : Rhizophora mangle L., Avicennia sp., Laguncularia sp., and the »cotton tree of sea» Hibiscus sp. Fauna: the great land crab «guaimú» Cardisoma guanhumi Latr., ashore in dry firm land. There is the real land crab Ucides cordatus (L.) in wetting mud and in neigh¬ bourhood of the burrows of the fiddler-crabs of genus Uca. On stones and in the roots of the Rhizophora inhabits the brightly colored mangrove-tree-crab («aratu» Portuguese nickname) Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille) and the sparingly the big oyster Ostrea rhizophorae Guild. Lower is the region of barnacles Balanus amphitrite var. communis Darwin and var. niveus Darwin; Balanus tintinnabulum var. tintinnabulum (L.) doesn't grow in this brackish water; lower is the region of Pelecipoda with prepollency of Venus and Cytherea shell-fishes and the Panopeus mud crab; there are the sea lettuce Ulva and the Gastreropod Cerithium. The Paguridae Clibanarius which lives in the empty shells of Gasteropod molluscs, and the sessile ascidians Tethium plicatum (Lesuer) appears in some seasons. In the bottom there is a black argillous mud where the «one landed shrimps» Alpheus sp. is hidden. OLIGOHALINE WATER REGIME The salinity is lower than 10/1.000. average 8/1.000. There are no barnacles and no sea-beetles Isopods of genus Lygia; on the hay of the shore there are several graminea. This brackish water pervades by mouthes of rivers and penetrates until about 3 kilometers river above. While there is some salt dissolved in water, there are some mud crabs of the genus Uca, Sesarma, Metasesarma and Chasmagnatus. The presence of floating green plants coming from the rivers in the waters of a region indicated the oligohaline waters, with low salt content because when the average of NaCl increases above 8/1.000 these plants die and become rusty colored.
