In this paper we present a novel approach for multispectral image contextual classification by combining iterative combinatorial optimization algorithms. The pixel-wise decision rule is defined using a Bayesian approach to combine two MRF models: a Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) for the observations (likelihood) and a Potts model for the a priori knowledge, to regularize the solution in the presence of noisy data. Hence, the classification problem is stated according to a Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) framework. In order to approximate the MAP solution we apply several combinatorial optimization methods using multiple simultaneous initializations, making the solution less sensitive to the initial conditions and reducing both computational cost and time in comparison to Simulated Annealing, often unfeasible in many real image processing applications. Markov Random Field model parameters are estimated by Maximum Pseudo-Likelihood (MPL) approach, avoiding manual adjustments in the choice of the regularization parameters. Asymptotic evaluations assess the accuracy of the proposed parameter estimation procedure. To test and evaluate the proposed classification method, we adopt metrics for quantitative performance assessment (Cohen`s Kappa coefficient), allowing a robust and accurate statistical analysis. The obtained results clearly show that combining sub-optimal contextual algorithms significantly improves the classification performance, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. This paper compares the effectiveness of the Tsallis entropy over the classic Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon entropy for general pattern recognition, and proposes a multi-q approach to improve pattern analysis using entropy. A series of experiments were carried out for the problem of classifying image patterns. Given a dataset of 40 pattern classes, the goal of our image case study is to assess how well the different entropies can be used to determine the class of a newly given image sample. Our experiments show that the Tsallis entropy using the proposed multi-q approach has great advantages over the Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon entropy for pattern classification, boosting image recognition rates by a factor of 3. We discuss the reasons behind this success, shedding light on the usefulness of the Tsallis entropy and the multi-q approach. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this thesis is to present a new approach to the lossy compression of multispectral images. Proposed algorithm is based on combination of quantization and clustering. Clustering was investigated for compression of the spatial dimension and the vector quantization was applied for spectral dimension compression. Presenting algo¬rithms proposes to compress multispectral images in two stages. During the first stage we define the classes' etalons, another words to each uniform areas are located inside the image the number of class is given. And if there are the pixels are not yet assigned to some of the clusters then it doing during the second; pass and assign to the closest eta¬lons. Finally a compressed image is represented with a flat index image pointing to a codebook with etalons. The decompression stage is instant too. The proposed method described in this paper has been tested on different satellite multispectral images from different resources. The numerical results and illustrative examples of the method are represented too.

Informatics evolution presently offers the possibility of new technique and methodology development for studies in all human knowledge areas. In addition, the present personal computer capacity of handling a large volume of data makes the creation and application of new analysis tools easy. This paper aimed the application of a fuzzy partition matrix to analyze data obtained from the Landsat 5 TMN sensor, in order to elaborate the supervised classification of land use in Arroio das Pombas microbasin in Botucatu, SP, Brazil. It was possible that one single training area present input in more than one covering class due to weight attribution at the signature creation moment. A change in the classification result was also observed when compared to maximum likelihood classification, mainly when related to bigger uniformity and better class edges classification.

ABSTRACT Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of women mortality in the world and its early detection continues being a key piece to improve the prognosis and survival. Currently, the most reliable and practical method for early detection of breast cancer is mammography. The presence of microcalcifications has been considered as a very important indicator ofmalignant types of breast cancer and its detection and classification are important to prevent and treat the disease. However, the detection and classification of microcalcifications continue being a hard work due to that, in mammograms there is a poor contrast between microcalcifications and the tissue around them. Factors such as visualization, tiredness or insufficient experience of the specialist increase the risk of omit some present lesions. To reduce this risk, is important to have alternatives such as a second opinion or a double analysis for the same specialist. In the first option, the cost increases and diagnosis time also increases for both of them. This is the reason why there is a great motivation for development of help systems or assistance in the decision making process. This work presents, develops and justifies a system for the detection of microcalcifications in regions of interest extracted fromdigitizedmammographies to contribute to the early detection of breast cancer. This systemis based on image processing techniques, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. For system development the following features are considered: With the aim of training and testing the system, an images database is created, belonging to a region of interest extracted from digitized mammograms. The application of the top-hat transformis proposed. This image processing technique is based on mathematical morphology operations. The aim of this technique is to improve the contrast betweenmicrocalcifications and tissue present in the image. A novel algorithm called sub-segmentation is proposed. The sub-segmentation is based on pattern recognition techniques applying a non-supervised clustering algorithm known as Possibilistic Fuzzy c-Means (PFCM). The aim is to find regions corresponding to the microcalcifications and distinguish them from the healthy tissue. Furthermore, with the aim of showing themain advantages and disadvantages this is compared with two algorithms of same type: the k-means and the fuzzy c-means (FCM). On the other hand, it is important to highlight in this work for the first time the sub-segmentation is used for microcalcifications detection. Finally, a classifier based on an artificial neural network such as Multi-layer Perceptron is used. The purpose of this classifier is to discriminate froma binary perspective the patterns built from gray level intensity of the original image. This classification distinguishes between microcalcifications and healthy tissue.

Given the limitations of different types of remote sensing images, automated land-cover classifications of the Amazon várzea may yield poor accuracy indexes. One way to improve accuracy is through the combination of images from different sensors, by either image fusion or multi-sensor classifications. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine which classification method is more efficient in improving land cover classification accuracies for the Amazon várzea and similar wetland environments - (a) synthetically fused optical and SAR images or (b) multi-sensor classification of paired SAR and optical images. Land cover classifications based on images from a single sensor (Landsat TM or Radarsat-2) are compared with multi-sensor and image fusion classifications. Object-based image analyses (OBIA) and the J.48 data-mining algorithm were used for automated classification, and classification accuracies were assessed using the kappa index of agreement and the recently proposed allocation and quantity disagreement measures. Overall, optical-based classifications had better accuracy than SAR-based classifications. Once both datasets were combined using the multi-sensor approach, there was a 2% decrease in allocation disagreement, as the method was able to overcome part of the limitations present in both images. Accuracy decreased when image fusion methods were used, however. We therefore concluded that the multi-sensor classification method is more appropriate for classifying land cover in the Amazon várzea.

This paper presents a semisupervised support vector machine (SVM) that integrates the information of both labeled and unlabeled pixels efficiently. Method's performance is illustrated in the relevant problem of very high resolution image classification of urban areas. The SVM is trained with the linear combination of two kernels: a base kernel working only with labeled examples is deformed by a likelihood kernel encoding similarities between labeled and unlabeled examples. Results obtained on very high resolution (VHR) multispectral and hyperspectral images show the relevance of the method in the context of urban image classification. Also, its simplicity and the few parameters involved make the method versatile and workable by unexperienced users.

Defining an efficient training set is one of the most delicate phases for the success of remote sensing image classification routines. The complexity of the problem, the limited temporal and financial resources, as well as the high intraclass variance can make an algorithm fail if it is trained with a suboptimal dataset. Active learning aims at building efficient training sets by iteratively improving the model performance through sampling. A user-defined heuristic ranks the unlabeled pixels according to a function of the uncertainty of their class membership and then the user is asked to provide labels for the most uncertain pixels. This paper reviews and tests the main families of active learning algorithms: committee, large margin, and posterior probability-based. For each of them, the most recent advances in the remote sensing community are discussed and some heuristics are detailed and tested. Several challenging remote sensing scenarios are considered, including very high spatial resolution and hyperspectral image classification. Finally, guidelines for choosing the good architecture are provided for new and/or unexperienced user.

In the recent years, kernel methods have revealed very powerful tools in many application domains in general and in remote sensing image classification in particular. The special characteristics of remote sensing images (high dimension, few labeled samples and different noise sources) are efficiently dealt with kernel machines. In this paper, we propose the use of structured output learning to improve remote sensing image classification based on kernels. Structured output learning is concerned with the design of machine learning algorithms that not only implement input-output mapping, but also take into account the relations between output labels, thus generalizing unstructured kernel methods. We analyze the framework and introduce it to the remote sensing community. Output similarity is here encoded into SVM classifiers by modifying the model loss function and the kernel function either independently or jointly. Experiments on a very high resolution (VHR) image classification problem shows promising results and opens a wide field of research with structured output kernel methods.
