Oxytocin (OT) plays a key role in the mediation of social and stress behaviors across many species; however, the mechanism is still unclear. The present study investigated the influence of prenatal levels of mesotocin (MT; avian homologue of OT) on postnatal social and stress behavior in Northern bobwhite quail. Experiment one determined endogenous levels of MT during prenatal development using an enzyme-linked immunoassay kit. Experiment two examined the influence of increased MT during prenatal development on chicks' individual recognition ability and stress response to a novel environment. Experiment one showed MT levels increased significantly throughout embryonic development. Experiment two showed significant differences in stress behavior for chicks with increased MT during prenatal development; however, no significant differences were found for social behavior. This study suggests MT serves different functions depending on the stage of embryonic development and that increasing MT levels affects postnatal stress behavior, but not social behavior.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar o contemporâneo movimento sociopolítico do Decrescimento, partindo das ideias inaugurais de Serge Latouche, economista e filósofo francês responsável pela criação deste termo, sua historicidade, premissas de análise, e novas formas de subjetivação que propõe, cuja argumentação se sustenta e deriva também, dentre outros autores - como Castoriadis, Gorz e Mészáros - da tese de David Harvey que estabelece que desenvolvimento não é o mesmo que crescimento, e que é possível promover desenvolvimento nas dimensões das relações pessoais, sociais do cotidiano e das relações com o meio ambiente sem as orientações que favoreçam o capital e sua máxima de acumulação. Trata-se, segundo os autores, de um movimento anticapitalista que busca denunciar questões críticas contemporâneas e contradições e crises do capitalismo, apontando um conjunto de passos a serem dados para o lado de fora desta lógica que valoriza e incentiva o desejo e a necessidade do excesso. Em diálogo pleno com a Ética e seus mais recentes estudos, nos quais desponta a autora Victoria Camps, o Decrescimento se preocupa com as escolhas do indivíduo, com o que as mobiliza e com as maneiras pelas quais devemos viver. Segundo esta autora o reconhecimento em torno de nossa não autossuficiência faz com que nos percebamos vulneráveis e o espírito do que a maioria dos autores do Decrescimento chama de espírito do Dom do Decrescimento e de a Economia da Felicidade dialoga diretamente com a busca do homem por governar estas vulnerabilidades, compreender suas virtudes, desenvolvê-las e praticar o bem e seu senso coletivo. Sua contribuição por sua vez para a construção contínua e transformadora de uma Psicologia Social Crítica deve-se à busca por um novo sujeito, e cuja subjetividade possa ser ressignificada e emancipada, neste exercício alguns conceitos nos foram muito caros, como por exemplo, o conceito de liberdade. Discutiu-se o Decrescimento destacando suas viabilidades práticas, importância, dimensões planetárias e aquilo que particularmente mais me chamou atenção em relação ao movimento a partir de minha própria experiência na 3 Conferência Internacional do Decrescimento que ocorreu em Veneza em setembro de 2012. A espinha dorsal deste trabalho foi o próprio discurso do Decrescimento e o discurso construído em torno dele, e suas vozes que foram dispostas e organizadas em análise nesta pesquisa em forma de interlocução e diálogos abertos, interdisciplinares, teóricos e práticos. A interlocução foi exercício metodológico capaz de reunir as vozes do Decrescimento e transportá-las para dentro do texto desta pesquisa, sendo a própria pesquisa em si, pelo dar a conhecer deste sujeito e que pode ser outro e mediar sua existência com o mundo de outras maneiras, e pelo dar a conhecer em torno do próprio movimento, e sobre o qual não se pretende conclusões, pois não se trata de encerrar a discussão trata-se de valorizá-la por ela mesma e potencializar possibilidades dialéticas, críticas e reflexivas, ficando, portanto ao leitor o convite a problematizar-se diante das questões aqui destacadas, em busca de si, para si e pelas alternativas existenciais mais diversas, dentre elas, o Decrescimento.

A comunicação acústica em beija-flores durante muito tempo foi negligenciada em função da coloração conspícua que representa uma sofisticada comunicação visual da maioria dos representantes deste grupo. Entretanto, estudos recentes constataram que há indícios de aprendizagem vocal em algumas espécies de Trochilidae. O presente estudo aborda o comportamento vocal do beija-flor Phaethornis superciliosus, espécie abundante na região amazônica. Esta espécie apresenta como sistema de acasalamento a formação em arena, que consiste na agregação de machos em um pequeno território, onde se exibem para outros machos e fêmeas, com o intuito de atrair estas últimas para acasalar. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi analisar o comportamento vocal de P. superciliosus dispostos em seis arenas no Parque Ecológico de Gunma, Santa Bárbara do Pará, 50 km ao norte de Belém, considerando a emissão e estrutura física do canto, seu repertório, a frequência de emissão ao longo do dia e do ano e a dinâmica das arenas. Verificamos que a população estudada apresenta um repertório vocal composto de duas notas que são emitidas de maneira alternada. Os cantos dos indivíduos analisados apresentaram diferenças significativas entre si considerando os parâmetros físicos do som (frequências máxima e mínima, duração e intervalo entre as notas e o ritmo de emissão das notas). Esta diferenciação inter-individual pode estar relacionada à seleção sexual, na qual o canto pode permitir o reconhecimento individual, sua posição social e seu desempenho para a atração das fêmeas. Constatamos que a atividade vocal é mais intensa no segundo semestre, entre junho e novembro, período que provavelmente corresponde à estação reprodutiva. Realizamos testes de playback, que consistem em reproduzir um som previamente gravado e registrar a resposta provocada em uma das arenas em dois pontos distintos, simulando a entrada de outro indivíduo. Constatamos que o som emitido em resposta ao teste diferiu significativamente do canto espontâneo em todos os parâmetros físicos analisados. A resposta ao playback mostra que houve uma redução na faixa de frequência com que o canto foi emitido e o ritmo de emissão de notas mais rápido. Tais características do canto podem estarrelacionadas a um comportamento mais agressivo. As arenas são formadas emáreas de borda e sempre próximas a igarapés, com o tamanho da área variando entre 86m2 e 14m2, compostas de dois a quatro indivíduos distantes de 7m a 72m entre si. Nossos resultados mostraram que a organização social da arena deve ser melhor compreendida através de estudos mais detalhados sobre o possível significado que as diferenças individuais no canto podem representar para o estabelecimento da posição hierárquica dos indivíduos nas arenas.

Cohabitation for 14 days with Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice was shown to increase locomotor activity, to decrease hypothalamic noradrenaline (NA) levels, to increase NA turnover and to decrease innate immune responses and decrease the animals' resistance to tumor growth. Cage mates of a B16F10 melanoma-bearer mice were also reported to show neuroimmune changes. Chemosignals released by Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice have been reported to be relevant for the neutrophil activity changes induced by cohabitation. The present experiment was designed to further analyze the effects of odor cues on neuroimmune changes induced by cohabitation with a sick cage mate. Specifically, the relevance of chemosignals released by an Ehrlich tumor-bearing mouse was assessed on the following: behavior (open-field and plus maze); hypothalamic NA levels and turnover; adrenaline (A) and NA plasmatic levels; and host resistance induced by tumor growth. To comply with such objectives, devices specifically constructed to analyze the influence of chemosignals released from tumor-bearing mice were employed. The results show that deprivation of odor cues released by Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice reversed the behavioral, neurochemical and immune changes induced by cohabitation. Mice use scents for intraspecies communication in many social contexts. Tumors produce volatile organic compounds released into the atmosphere through breath, sweat, and urine. Our results strongly suggest that volatile compounds released by Ehrlich tumor-injected mice are perceived by their conspecifics, inducing the neuroimmune changes reported for cohabitation with a sick companion. Individual recognition systems require the sender to be individually distinctive and the receiver to be able to perceive differences between individuals and react accordingly. Many studies have demonstrated that acoustic signals of almost any species contain individualized information. However, fewer studies have tested experimentally if those signals are used for individual recognition by potential receivers. While laboratory studies using zebra finches have shown that fledglings recognize their parents by their “distance call”, mutual recognition using the same call type has not been demonstrated yet. In a laboratory study with zebra finches, we first quantified between-individual acoustic variation in distance calls of fledglings. In a second step, we tested recognition of fledgling calls by parents using playback experiments. With a discriminant function analysis, we show that individuals are highly distinctive and most measured parameters show very high potential to encode for individuality. The response pattern of zebra finch parents shows that they do react to calls of fledglings, however they do not distinguish between own and unfamiliar offspring, despite individual distinctiveness. This finding is interesting in light of the observation of a high percentage of misdirected feedings in our communal breeding aviaries. Our results demonstrate the importance of adopting a receiver's perspective and suggest that variation in fledgling contact calls might not be used in individual recognition of offspring.

Territorial individuals often respond less aggressively to intrusions by their neighbours than to intrusions by unfamiliar individuals. This commonly observed strategy, the dear-enemy phenomenon, is thought to minimise the costs associated with territory defence. This study determined whether an insular population of territory-holding buff-banded rails (Gallirallus philippensis) exhibits dear-enemy relationships and whether males and females differ in their responses to neighbours and non-neighbours. Playback techniques were used to examine and compare the vocalisations and movements of focal individuals in response to the territorial advertisement calls of their neighbours and of unfamiliar individuals (non-neighbours). Results showed that focal birds did not respond differently to the calls of neighbours and non-neighbours; thus, no evidence for the dear-enemy phenomenon was found in this species. We suggest that this result is due to the significant threats posed by neighbours to territory owners in this territorial system, in addition to a high level of territorial instability in the population. Males and females were shown to differ qualitatively in their general territorial response to intruders but not in their relative responses to neighbours and non-neighbours, suggesting that the relative threats posed by neighbours and non-neighbours do not differ between the sexes.

Group living animals may eavesdrop on signalling interactions between conspecifics and integrate it with their own past social experience in order to optimize the use of relevant information from others. However, little is known about this interplay between public (eavesdropped) and private social information. To investigate it, we first manipulated the dominance status of bystander zebrafish. Next, we either allowed or prevented bystanders from observing a fight. Finally, we assessed their behaviour towards the winners and losers of the interaction, using a custom-made video-tracking system and directional analysis. We found that only dominant bystanders who had seen the fight revealed a significant increase in directional focus (a measure of attention) towards the losers of the fights. Furthermore, our results indicate that information about the fighters' acquired status was collected from the signalling interaction itself and not from post-interaction status cues, which implies the existence of individual recognition in zebrafish. Thus, we show for the first time that zebrafish, a highly social model organism, eavesdrop on conspecific agonistic interactions and that this process is modulated by the eavesdroppers' dominance status. We suggest that this type of integration of public and private information may be ubiquitous in social learning processes.

Most psychophysical studies of object recognition have focussed on the recognition and representation of individual objects subjects had previously explicitely been trained on. Correspondingly, modeling studies have often employed a 'grandmother'-type representation where the objects to be recognized were represented by individual units. However, objects in the natural world are commonly members of a class containing a number of visually similar objects, such as faces, for which physiology studies have provided support for a representation based on a sparse population code, which permits generalization from the learned exemplars to novel objects of that class. In this paper, we present results from psychophysical and modeling studies intended to investigate object recognition in natural ('continuous') object classes. In two experiments, subjects were trained to perform subordinate level discrimination in a continuous object class - images of computer-rendered cars - created using a 3D morphing system. By comparing the recognition performance of trained and untrained subjects we could estimate the effects of viewpoint-specific training and infer properties of the object class-specific representation learned as a result of training. We then compared the experimental findings to simulations, building on our recently presented HMAX model of object recognition in cortex, to investigate the computational properties of a population-based object class representation as outlined above. We find experimental evidence, supported by modeling results, that training builds a viewpoint- and class-specific representation that supplements a pre-existing repre-sentation with lower shape discriminability but possibly greater viewpoint invariance.

A methodology has been developed for the study of molecular recognition at the level of single events and for the localization of sites on biosurfaces, in combining force microscopy with molecular recognition by specific ligands. For this goal, a sensor was designed by covalently linking an antibody (anti-human serum albumin, polyclonal) via a flexible spacer to the tip of a force microscope. This sensor permitted detection of single antibody-antigen recognition events by force signals of unique shape with an unbinding force of 244 +/- 22 pN. Analysis revealed that observed unbinding forces originate from the dissociation of individual Fab fragments from a human serum albumin molecule. The two Fab fragments of the antibody were found to bind independently and with equal probability. The flexible linkage provided the antibody with a 6-nm dynamical reach for binding, rendering binding probability high, 0.5 for encounter times of 60 ms. This permitted fast and reliable detection of antigenic sites during lateral scans with a positional accuracy of 1.5 nm. It is indicated that this methodology has promise for characterizing rate constants and kinetics of molecular recognition complexes and for molecular mapping of biosurfaces such as membranes.

The study of acoustic communication in animals often requires not only the recognition of species specific acoustic signals but also the identification of individual subjects, all in a complex acoustic background. Moreover, when very long recordings are to be analyzed, automatic recognition and identification processes are invaluable tools to extract the relevant biological information. A pattern recognition methodology based on hidden Markov models is presented inspired by successful results obtained in the most widely known and complex acoustical communication signal: human speech. This methodology was applied here for the first time to the detection and recognition of fish acoustic signals, specifically in a stream of round-the-clock recordings of Lusitanian toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus) in their natural estuarine habitat. The results show that this methodology is able not only to detect the mating sounds (boatwhistles) but also to identify individual male toadfish, reaching an identification rate of ca. 95%. Moreover this method also proved to be a powerful tool to assess signal durations in large data sets. However, the system failed in recognizing other sound types.

Hybrid face recognition, using image (2D) and structural (3D) information, has explored the fusion of Nearest Neighbour classifiers. This paper examines the effectiveness of feature modelling for each individual modality, 2D and 3D. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the fusion of feature modelling techniques for the 2D and 3D modalities yields performance improvements over the individual classifiers. By fusing the feature modelling classifiers for each modality with equal weights the average Equal Error Rate improves from 12.60% for the 2D classifier and 12.10% for the 3D classifier to 7.38% for the Hybrid 2D+3D clasiffier.

Identifying an individual from surveillance video is a difficult, time consuming and labour intensive process. The proposed system aims to streamline this process by filtering out unwanted scenes and enhancing an individual's face through super-resolution. An automatic face recognition system is then used to identify the subject or present the human operator with likely matches from a database. A person tracker is used to speed up the subject detection and super-resolution process by tracking moving subjects and cropping a region of interest around the subject's face to reduce the number and size of the image frames to be super-resolved respectively. In this paper, experiments have been conducted to demonstrate how the optical flow super-resolution method used improves surveillance imagery for visual inspection as well as automatic face recognition on an Eigenface and Elastic Bunch Graph Matching system. The optical flow based method has also been benchmarked against the ``hallucination'' algorithm, interpolation methods and the original low-resolution images. Results show that both super-resolution algorithms improved recognition rates significantly. Although the hallucination method resulted in slightly higher recognition rates, the optical flow method produced less artifacts and more visually correct images suitable for human consumption.

Stem cells have attracted tremendous interest in recent times due to their promise in providing innovative new treatments for a great range of currently debilitating diseases. This is due to their potential ability to regenerate and repair damaged tissue, and hence restore lost body function, in a manner beyond the body's usual healing process. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells or bone marrow stromal cells are one type of adult stem cells that are of particular interest. Since they are derived from a living human adult donor, they do not have the ethical issues associated with the use of human embryonic stem cells. They are also able to be taken from a patient or other donors with relative ease and then grown readily in the laboratory for clinical application. Despite the attractive properties of bone marrow stromal cells, there is presently no quick and easy way to determine the quality of a sample of such cells. Presently, a sample must be grown for weeks and subject to various time-consuming assays, under the direction of an expert cell biologist, to determine whether it will be useful. Hence there is a great need for innovative new ways to assess the quality of cell cultures for research and potential clinical application. The research presented in this thesis investigates the use of computerised image processing and pattern recognition techniques to provide a quicker and simpler method for the quality assessment of bone marrow stromal cell cultures. In particular, aim of this work is to find out whether it is possible, through the use of image processing and pattern recognition techniques, to predict the growth potential of a culture of human bone marrow stromal cells at early stages, before it is readily apparent to a human observer. With the above aim in mind, a computerised system was developed to classify the quality of bone marrow stromal cell cultures based on phase contrast microscopy images. Our system was trained and tested on mixed images of both healthy and unhealthy bone marrow stromal cell samples taken from three different patients. This system, when presented with 44 previously unseen bone marrow stromal cell culture images, outperformed human experts in the ability to correctly classify healthy and unhealthy cultures. The system correctly classified the health status of an image 88% of the time compared to an average of 72% of the time for human experts. Extensive training and testing of the system on a set of 139 normal sized images and 567 smaller image tiles showed an average performance of 86% and 85% correct classifications, respectively. The contributions of this thesis include demonstrating the applicability and potential of computerised image processing and pattern recognition techniques to the task of quality assessment of bone marrow stromal cell cultures. As part of this system, an image normalisation method has been suggested and a new segmentation algorithm has been developed for locating cell regions of irregularly shaped cells in phase contrast images. Importantly, we have validated the efficacy of both the normalisation and segmentation method, by demonstrating that both methods quantitatively improve the classification performance of subsequent pattern recognition algorithms, in discriminating between cell cultures of differing health status. We have shown that the quality of a cell culture of bone marrow stromal cells may be assessed without the need to either segment individual cells or to use time-lapse imaging. Finally, we have proposed a set of features, that when extracted from the cell regions of segmented input images, can be used to train current state of the art pattern recognition systems to predict the quality of bone marrow stromal cell cultures earlier and more consistently than human experts.

The performance of automatic speech recognition systems deteriorates in the presence of noise. One known solution is to incorporate video information with an existing acoustic speech recognition system. We investigate the performance of the individual acoustic and visual sub-systems and then examine different ways in which the integration of the two systems may be performed. The system is to be implemented in real time on a Texas Instruments' TMS320C80 DSP.
