We report results of molecular dynamics investigations into neutral impurity diffusing within an amorphous solid as a function of the size of the diffusant and density of the host amorphous matrix. We find that self diffusivity exhibits an anomalous maximum as a function of the size of the impurity species. An analysis of properties of the impurity atom with maximum diffusivity shows that it is associated with lower mean square force, reduced backscattering of velocity autocorrelation function, near-exponential decay of the intermediate scattering function (as compared to stretched-exponential decay for other sizes of the impurity species) and lower activation energy. These results demonstrate the existence of size-dependent diffusivity maximum in disordered solids. Further, we show that the diffusivity maximum is observed at lower impurity diameters with increase in density. This is explained in terms of the Levitation parameter and the void structure of the amorphous solid. We demonstrate that these results imply contrasting dependence of self diffusivity (D) on the density of the amorphous matrix, p. D increases with p for small sizes of the impurity but shows an increase followed by a decrease for intermediate sizes of the impurity atom. For large sizes of the impurity atom, D decreases with increase in p. These contrasting dependence arises naturally from the existence of Levitation Effect.

A systematic investigation of the effects of antimony dopant on the electronic transport properties of amorphous (GeSe3.5)100−xSbx under high pressure (up to 120 kbar) has been carried out down to liquid-nitrogen temperature for the first time. Differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction methods were used for the characterization of freshly prepared and pressure-quenched materials which indicated the presence of structural phase transition in both GeSe3.5 and (GeSe3.5)100−xSbx around 105 kbar pressure. Electrical transport data revealed the strong compositional dependence of the electronic conduction process. A distinct kink in the conductivity temperature plot at pressures>15 kbar was observed in the Sb-doped compositions indicating the presence of different conduction processes. An attempt has been made to interpret the pressure-induced effect in the transport properties of these glasses considering the possible presence of both thermally activated conduction in the extended states and hopping process in the localized tail states. However, the interpretation of the transport data is not straightforward and the pressure dependence of the thermoelectric power will be needed to complete the picture. We present a method for calculating zero-frequency, spatially varying response and correlation functions around a magnetic impurity in metals. We illustrate the procedure which involves a combination of perturbative scaling and nonperturbative renormalization-group methods for the spin-(1/2) Kondo impurity. We explain the factorization of the temperature and spatial dependence of the Knight shift observed in NMR experiments.

ZnS:Cu, Br powder EL phosphors showed 6-line EPR signal at 25°C whose intensity increases with Cu content and on annealing in Zn-vapour. The signal arises from native Mn impurity. The starting material does not show any EPR signal since Mn2+ acts as an affinity potential well for a hole in ZnS, forming Mn3+ - a chemically uncommon situation in sulfides. In doped ZnS, holes are trapped at Cu such that Mn2+ persists. Deterioration of EL brightness is accompanied by the decrease in EPR signal intensity due to field assisted hole transference to Mn2+. Intentional addition of Mn in ZnS:Cu, Br decreases the brightness and shortens life time. Stable phosphors require ZnS with Mn content less than 1014 cm−3.

We present results of a study of the two-impurity Anderson model using a thermodynamic scaling theory developed recently. The model is characterized by the Coulomb energy U, the orbital energy epsilond, the d-level width Gamma, and the separation between impurities R. If Gamma<<−epsilond<impurity Kondo problem, discussed by us elsewhere; the main difference is that the RKKY interaction can acquire an antiferromagnetic contribution with a (kFR)−2 envelope over a restricted range of kFR. In this case impurity-impurity interactions can be substantial. The other interesting case is when the impurities have a ''fluctuating valence'' with the singlet lying lower in energy, i.e., epsilond>~Gamma. Here we find that the single-impurity physics dominates the low-temperature behavior, and impurity-impurity interactions are perturbative. The qualitative features of the temperature-dependent susceptibility are discussed. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

The two-impurity Kondo problem is studied by use of perturbative scaling techniques. The physics is determined by the interplay between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the two impurity spins and the Kondo effect. In particular, for a strong ferromagnetic RKKY interaction the susceptibility exhibits three structures as the temperature is lowered, corresponding to the ferromagnetic locking together of the two impurity spins followed by a two-stage freezing out of their local moments by the conduction electrons due to the Kondo effect.

A possible mechanism for the resistance minimum in dilute alloys in which the localized impurity states are non-magnetic is suggested. The fact is considered that what is essential to the Kondo-like behaviour is the interaction of the conduction electron spin s with the internal dynamical degrees of freedom of the impurity centre. The necessary internal dynamical degrees of freedom are provided by the dynamical Jahn-Teller effect associated with the degenerate 3d-orbitals of the transition-metal impurities interacting with the surrounding (octahedral) complex of the nearest-neighbour atoms. The fictitious spin I characterizing certain low-lying vibronic states of the system is shown to couple with the conduction electron spin s via s-d mixing and spin-orbit coupling, giving rise to a singular temperature-dependent exchange-like interaction. The resistivity so calculated is in fair agreement with the experimental results of Cape and Hake for Ti containing 0.2 at% of Fe.

We calculate the binding energy of a hole pair within the extended Anderson Hamiltonian for the high-Tc cuprates including a Cu impurity and an oxygen-derived band. The results indicate that stable hole pairs can be formed for intra-atomic and interatomic Coulomb repulsion strengths larger than 6 and 3.5 eV, respectively. It is also shown that the total hybridization strength between the Cu 3d and oxygen p band should be less than 2.5 eV. The hole pairing takes place primarily within the oxygen-derived p band. The range of parameter values for which hole pairing occurs is also consistent with the earlier photoemission results from these cuprates.

An expression is developed for the variation of the critical solution temperature of a binary liquid system when a third component (dopant) is added, using an extension of the regular solution theory. The model can be used for UCST, LCST and for closed loop systems and has the correct features in the limiting cases.

The electrical resistance of the binary liquid system cyclohexane + acetic anhydride is measured, in the critical region, both in the pure mixture and when the mixture is doped with small amounts (≈ 100 ppm) of H2O/D2O impurities.T c was approached to aboutt=3×10−6 wheret=(T −T c )/T c . The critical exponentb ≈ 0.35 in the fit of the resistance data to the equationdR/dT ∼t −b does not seem to be affected appreciably by the impurities. There is a sign reversal ofdR/dt in the non-critical region. Binary liquid systems seem to violate the universality of the critical resistivity.

Measurements of impurity diffusion of 86Rb, 90Sr, 133Ba, and 137Cs in single crystal Bi were carried out. Diffusion samples were prepared from single crystal Bi by ion implantation. About 1012-1013 ions were implanted, resulting in surface activities approx =104 cpm. After implantation, specimens were annealed for specified times at 220-265 deg C, and tracer penetration profiles were determined by an electrolytic method. A typical penetration profile for 137Cs in Bi showed a linear relationship for log C vs x in with Fick's law for volume diffusion. Laws of grain boundary diffusion were not obeyed and the order of magnitude of the penetration distances was much less than on a grain boundary mechanism. Results were interpreted in terms of a modified Fischer analysis using a kinetic trapping term. Effective half lengths for trapping at a twin boundary were determined for each impurity.

The electrical resistance of the critical binary liquid system C6H12+(CH3CO)2O is measured both in the pure form and when the system is doped with small amounts (≈ 100 ppm) of H2O impurities. Near Tc, the resistance varies as dR/dT = A1+A2 (T-Tc)-b with b ≈ 0.35. Neither the critical exponent b nor the amplitude ratio A1/A2 are affected by the impurities. A sign reversal of dR/dT is noticed at high temperatures T much greater-than Tc.

We present an explicit solution of the problem of two coupled spin-1/2 impurities, interacting with a band of conduction electrons. We obtain an exact effective bosonized Hamiltonian, which is then treated by two different methods (low-energy theory and mean-field approach). Scale invariance is explicitly shown at the quantum critical point. The staggered susceptibility behaves like ln(T(K)/T) at low T, whereas the magnetic susceptibility and [S1.S2] are well behaved at the transition. The divergence of C(T)/T when approaching the transition point is also studied. The non-Fermi-liquid (actually marginal-Fermi-liquid) critical point is shown to arise because of the existence of anomalous correlations, which lead to degeneracies between bosonic and fermionic states of the system. The methods developed in this paper are of interest for studying more physically relevant models, for instance, for high-T(c) cuprates.

We study odd-membered chains of spin-1/2 impurities, with each end connected to its own metallic lead. For antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, universal two-channel Kondo (2CK) physics is shown to arise at low energies. Two overscreening mechanisms are found to occur depending on coupling strength, with distinct signatures in physical properties. For strong interimpurity coupling, a residual chain spin-1/2 moment experiences a renormalized effective coupling to the leads, while in the weak-coupling regime, Kondo coupling is mediated via incipient single-channel Kondo singlet formation. We also investigate models in which the leads are tunnel-coupled to the impurity chain, permitting variable dot filling under applied gate voltages. Effective low-energy models for each regime of filling are derived, and for even fillings where the chain ground state is a spin singlet, an orbital 2CK effect is found to be operative. Provided mirror symmetry is preserved, 2CK physics is shown to be wholly robust to variable dot filling; in particular, the single-particle spectrum at the Fermi level, and hence the low-temperature zero-bias conductance, is always pinned to half-unitarity. We derive a Friedel-Luttinger sum rule and from it show that, in contrast to a Fermi liquid, the Luttinger integral is nonzero and determined solely by the ``excess'' dot charge as controlled by gate voltage. The relevance of the work to real quantum dot devices, where interlead charge-transfer processes fatal to 2CK physics are present, is also discussed. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization-group techniques are used to obtain a detailed understanding of these problems.
