To describe the clinical history of a child with aggressive behavior and recurring death-theme speech, and report the experience of the team of authors, who proposed an alternative to medication through the establishment of a protection network and the inter-sector implementation of the circle of security concept. A 5-year-old child has a violent and aggressive behavior at the day-care. The child was diagnosed by the healthcare center with depressive disorder and behavioral disorder, and was medicated with sertraline and risperidone. Side effects were observed, and the medications were discontinued. Despite several actions, such as talks, teamwork, psychological and psychiatric follow-up, the child's behavior remained unchanged. A unique therapeutic project was developed by Universidade Estadual de Campinas' Medical School students in order to establish a connection between the entities responsible for the child's care (daycare center, healthcare center, and family). Thus, the team was able to develop a basic care protection network. The implementation of the inter-sector circle of security, as well as the communication and cooperation among the teams, produced very favorable results in this case. This initiative was shown to be a feasible and effective alternative to the use of medication for this child.

BACKGROUND: Mentoring Programs have been developed in several medical schools, but few studies have investigated the mentors'perspective. PURPOSES: To explore mentors'perceptions regarding their experience. METHODS: Mentors at a medical school were invited to participate in an in-depth interview including questions on satisfaction, difficulties, and perception of changes resulting from the program. RESULTS: Mentors' satisfaction and difficulties are strongly associated with students'involvement in the activity. Mentors believe changes observed in students were more related to life issues; for some mentors, there is no recognition or awareness of the program. However, most of the mentors acknowledged important changes in relation to themselves: as teachers, faculty members, and individuals. CONCLUSION: Attendance is crucial for both the mentoring relationship and strengthening of the program. Students involved in the activity motivate mentors in teaching and curriculum development, thereby creating a virtuous circle and benefiting undergraduate medical education as a whole.

It has been suggested that the temporal control of rhythmic unimianual movements is different between tasks requiring continuous (e.g., circle drawing) and discontinuous movements (e.g., finger tapping). Specifically, for continuous movements temporal regularities are ail emergent property, whereas for tasks that involve discontinuities timing is ail explicit part of the action goal. The present experiment further investigated the control of continuous and discontinuous movements by comparing the coordination dynamics and attentional demands of bimanual continuous circle drawing with bimanual intermittent circle drawing. The intermittent task required participants to insert a 400 ms pause between each cycle while circling. Using dual-task methodology, 15 right-handed participants performed the two circle drawing tasks, while vocally responding to randomly presented auditory probes. The circle drawing tasks were performed in symmetrical and asymmetrical coordination modes and at movement frequencies of 1 Hz and 1.7 Hz. Intermittent circle drawing exhibited superior spatial and temporal accuracy and stability than continuous circle drawing supporting the hypothesis that the two tasks have different underlying control processes. In terms of attentional cost, probe RT was significantly slower during the intermittent circle drawing task than the continuous circle drawing task across both coordination modes and movement frequencies. Of interest was the finding that in the intermittent circling task reaction time (RT) to probes presented during the pause between cycles did not differ from the RT to probes occurring during the circling movement. The differences in attentional demands between the intermittent and continuous circle drawing tasks may reflect the operation of explicit event timing and implicit emergent timing processes, respectively. Twelve samples with different grain sizes were prepared by normal grain growth and by primary recrystallization, and the hysteresis dissipated energy was measured by a quasi-static method. Results showed a linear relation between hysteresis energy loss and the inverse of grain size, which is here called Mager`s law, for maximum inductions from 0.6 to 1.5 T, and a Steinmetz power law relation between hysteresis loss and maximum induction for all samples. The combined effect is better described by a Mager`s law where the coefficients follow Steinmetz law.

Assuming that different energy dissipation mechanisms are at work along hysteresis, a hysteresis loss subdivision procedure has been proposed, using the induction at maximum permeability ( around 0.8 T, in electrical steels) as the boundary between the ""low-induction`` and the ""high-induction`` regions. This paper reviews the most important results obtained in 10 years of investigation of the effect of microstructure on these components of the hysteresis loss. As maximum induction increases, the ""low-induction loss`` increases linearly up to 1.2 T, while the ""high-induction loss`` is zero up to 0.7 T and then increases as a power law with n = 5. Low-induction loss behavior is linearly related to H(c) between 0.4 and 1.2 T. Grain size has a larger influence on low-induction losses than on high-induction losses. Texture has a much stronger influence on high loss than on low-induction loss, and it is related to the average magnetocrystalline energy. 6.5%Si steel shows smaler hysteresis loss at 1.5 T than 3.5%Si steel only because of its smaler high-induction component. The abrupt increase in hysteresis loss due to very small plastic deformation is strongly related to the high-induction loss component. These results are discussed in terms of energy dissipation mechanisms such as domain wall movement, irreversible rotation and domain wall energy dissipation at domain nucleation and annihilation. The behavior of the Steinmetz coefficient has been described for several different materials: steels with 3.2% Si and 6.5% Si, MnZn ferrite and Ni-Fe alloys. It is shown that, for steels, the Steinmetz law achieves R(2)> 0.999 only between 0.3 and 1.2 T, which is the interval where domain wall movement dominates. The anisotropy of Steinmetz coefficient for non-oriented (NO) steel is also discussed. It is shown that for a NO 3.2% Si steel with a strong Goss component in texture, the power law coefficient and remanence decreases monotonically with the direction of measurement going from rolling direction (RD) to transverse direction (TD), although coercive field increased. The remanence behavior can be related to the minimization of demagnetizing field at the surface grains. The data appear to indicate that the Steinmetz coefficient increases as magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant decreases. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We introduce three area preserving maps with phase space structures which resemble circle packings. Each mapping is derived from a kicked Hamiltonian system with one of the three different phase space geometries (planar, hyperbolic or spherical) and exhibits an infinite number of coexisting stable periodic orbits which appear to ‘pack’ the phase space with circular resonances.

The hydrogenation of cyclohexene over palladium supported in a microporous gamma-alumina pellet is studied thermogravimetrically with a view to measuring the extent of partial internal wetting associated with the different steady state branches. As many as three steady state branches having significantly different degrees of internal wetting and reaction rates, with transitions between them, are confirmed from observations of catalyst weight change. It is seen that with reduction in catalyst activity the middle branch, obtained by condensation from a vapor filled pellet, is much more prominent without showing an evaporative transition for the range of hydrogen partial pressures used here. The catalyst activity is therefore an important parameter affecting the structure of the steady state branches. Hysteresis effects are found to occur, and the thermogravimetric results also confirm the importance of history in determining the catalyst state. The measured degree of wetting is in accordance with that estimated from a mathematical model incorporating capillary condensation effects in addition to reaction-diffusion phenomena. The same model also satisfactorily interprets the reaction rate variations and transitions seen in the present work.

MCM-41 materials of six different pore diameters were prepared and characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, small-angle neutron scattering, and gas adsorption (argon at 77.4 and 87.4 K, nitrogen and oxygen at 77.4 K, and carbon dioxide at 194.6 K). A recent molecular continuum model of the authors, previously used for adsorption of nitrogen at 77.4 K, was applied here for adsorption of argon, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. While model predictions of single-pore adsorption isotherms for argon and oxygen are in satisfactory agreement with experimental data, significant deviation was found for carbon dioxide, most likely due to its high quadrupole moment. Predictions of critical pore diameter, below which reversible condensation occurs: were possible by the model and found to be consistent with experimental estimates, for the adsorption of the various gases. On the other hand, existing models such as the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), Saito-Foley, and Dubinin-Astakhov models were found to be inadequate, either predicting an incorrect pore diameter or not correlating the isotherms adequately. The wall structure of MCM-41 appears to be close to that of amorphous silica, as inferred from our skeletal density measurements.

In the present work, various theories predicting the critical diameter for the absence of capillary condensation and hysteresis are applied to experimental adsorption isotherms of vapors on regular mesoporous materials. Among the various theories studied, the tensile strength approximation proposed by the authors was found to be the most successful. Reversibility of nitrogen adsorption at 77.4 K was studied on pure MCM-41 of various pore sizes, as well as mixtures of pure MCM-41 samples in a 1:1 ratio. The results of PSD and hysteresis on MCM-41 mixtures are close to that expected from studies of the pure materials. The estimates of hysteresis critical temperature and diameter of MCM-41, HMS, FSM and KIT materials are also provided.

This paper examines the hysteresis hypothesis in the Brazilian industrialized exports using a time series analysis. This hypothesis finds an empirical representation into the nonlinear adjustments of the exported quantity to relative price changes. Thus, the threshold cointegration analysis proposed by Balke and Fomby [Balke, N.S. and Fomby, T.B. Threshold Cointegration. International Economic Review, 1997; 38; 627-645.] was used for estimating models with asymmetric adjustment of the error correction term. Amongst sixteen industrial sectors selected, there was evidence of nonlinearities in the residuals of long-run relationships of supply or demand for exports in nine of them. These nonlinearities represent asymmetric and/or discontinuous responses of exports to different representative measures of real exchange rates, in addition to other components of long-run demand or supply equations. The effect of heating and cooling on heart rate in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus was studied in response to different heat transfer mechanisms and heat loads. Three heating treatments were investigated. C. porosus were: (1) exposed to a radiant heat source under dry conditions; (2) heated via radiant energy while half-submerged in flowing water at 23degreesC and (3) heated via convective transfer by increasing water temperature from 23degreesC to 35degreesC. Cooling was achieved in all treatments by removing the heat source and with C. porosus half-submerged in flowing water at 23degreesC. In all treatments, the heart rate of C. porosus increased markedly in response to heating and decreased rapidly with the removal of the heat source. Heart rate during heating was significantly faster than during cooling at any given body temperature, i.e. there was a significant heart rate hysteresis. There were two identifiable responses to heating and cooling. During the initial stages of applying or removing the heat source, there was a dramatic increase or decrease in heart rate ('rapid response'), respectively, indicating a possible cardiac reflex. Nielsen and Perrochet [Adv. Water Resour. 23 (2000) 503] presented experimental data for cyclic water movement in the vadose zone above an oscillating watertable. The response of the watertable to cyclic forcing was characterised by the ratios of the forcing head to watertable amplitudes and their associated phase lag. They found that their non-hysteretic Richards' equation model failed to represent the observed behaviour of these parameters. This paper explores the effect on the simulated capillary fringe dynamics (in terms of these parameters) of including varying degrees of hysteresis in the moisture retention curve used in a numerical model of their experiment. It is clear that hysteresis can indeed account for observed discrepancies between simulation and experiment and that the effect of hysteresis varies with the frequency of oscillation. The use of a single-valued mean retention curve, as advocated by some authors, fails to provide a match between the simulated and observed behaviour of the Nielsen and Perrochet parameters, but is shown to be adequate for predicting time-averaged soil moisture profiles.
