Hypsiboas raniceps is a large treefrog typically found in the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes. Here we provide information about new records of this species in the Atlantic Forest and raise some hypotheses that could explain the late record of this species in this biome. © 2010 Check List and Authors.

The helminth fauna of twenty-five Hypsiboas raniceps (Anura, Hylidae) specimens collected in the pantanal wetland, municipality of Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil was studied. Twenty (80%) specimens were parasitized with at least one helminth species. The helminth fauda is composed by the nematodes Oswaldocruzia mazzai, Cosmocerca podicipinus and Physalopteroides venancioi beyond the no identified species of the genus Rhabdias, Physaloptera and Raillietnema and the family Cosmocercidae. Cysts and larvae of nematodes were also found. Catadiscus propinquus and diplostomid metacercariae were the recovered trematodes

The chromosomes of hylids Hypsiboas albopunctatus, H. raniceps, and H. crepitans from Brazil were analyzed with standard and differential staining techniques. The former species presented 2n = 22 and 2n = 23 karyotypes, the odd diploid number is due to the presence of an extra element interpreted as B chromosome. Although morphologically very similar to the small-sized chromosomes of the A complement, the B was promptly recognized, even under standard staining, on the basis of some characteristics that are usually attributed to this particular class of chromosomes. The two other species have 2n = 24, which is the chromosome number usually found in the species of Hypsiboas karyotyped so far. This means that 2n = 22 is a deviant diploid number, resulted from a structural rearrangement, altering the chromosome number of 2n = 24 to 2n = 22. Based on new chromosome data, some possibilities were evaluated for the origin of B chromosome in Hypsiboas albopunctatus, as well as the karyotypic evolution in the genus, leading to the reduction in the diploid number of 2n = 24 to 2n = 22.

Although seasonal metabolic variation in ectothermic tetrapods has been investigated primarily in the context of species showing some level of metabolic depression during winter, but several species of anurans maintain their activity patterns throughout the year in tropical and subtropical areas. The tree-frog Hypsiboas prasinus occurs in the subtropical Atlantic Forest and remains reproductively active during winter, at temperatures below 10 degrees C. We compared males calling in summer and winter, and found that males of H. prasinus exhibit seasonal adjustments in metabolic and morphometric variables. Individuals calling during winter were larger and showed higher resting metabolic rates than those calling during summer. Calling rates were not affected by season. Winter animals showed lower liver and heart activity level of citrate synthase (CS), partially compensated by larger liver mass. Winter individuals also showed higher activity Of pyruvate kinase (PK) and lower activity of CS in trunk muscles, and higher activity of CS in leg muscles. Winter metabolic adjustments seem to be achieved by both compensatory mechanisms to the lower environmental temperature and a seasonally oriented aerobic depression of several organs. The impact of seasonal metabolic changes on calling performance and the capacity of subtropical anurans for metabolic thermal acclimatization are also discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Seventy specimens of Hypsiboas albopunctatus (Anura: Hylidae) were collected and surveyed for endoparasites in Brasilia, Brazil at the end of the rainy season (February and March) in 2005. Sixteen males (22.86%) were infected by Rhabdias sp., Aplectana sp., Cosmocerca sp., and Falcaustra mascula. Rhabdias sp., a lung parasite, presented the highest prevalence (8.57%), mean intensity of infestation (1.333), and mean abundance (0.114). Moreover, this is the first report of a rhabdiasid nematode in the Hylidae in Brazil. The intestinal parasites, Cosmocerca sp. and Aplectana sp., had a similar prevalence (5.71%), but the former presented a higher mean intensity of infestation and mean abundance. The behavior and food habits of amphibians are responsible for the differences in their helminthofauna, and this study presents four new records of nematodes in H. albopunctatus.

Social behavior of Hypsiboas albomarginatus was studied in the Atlantic rain forest, Municipality of Ubatuba, in the north coast of the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Vocalizations of H. albomarginatus are described, including contexts in which they were emitted and temporal and spectral parameters differentiating advertisement from aggressive calls. Dominant call frequency was inversely correlated with male length and body mass but not with environmental temperature. Number of pulses per note was not correlated with any variable, and advertisement call amplitude was influenced by temperature and time. During chorus aggregation, males interacted acoustically by emitting advertisement calls in antiphony, or by emitting aggressive calls. Some disputes among males culminated in physical combat; males performed kicks and slaps on rivals' heads, in an apparent attempt to dislodge rivals from perches. Visual signals were also displayed during conflicts between males, contributing to an escalation of aggressive behavior. Visual signals were not recorded during courtship between males and females but may help in the accurate localization of the signaling male during aggressive interactions.
