Presents a unified and systematic assessment of ten position control strategies for a hydraulic servo system with single-ended cylinder driven by a proportional directional control valve. We aim at identifying those methods that achieve better tracking, have a low sensitivity to system uncertainties, and offer a good balance between development effort and end results. A formal approach for solving this problem relies on several practical metrics, which is introduced herein. Their choice is important, as the comparison results between controllers can vary significantly, depending on the selected criterion. Apart from the quantitative assessment, we also raise aspects which are difficult to quantify, but which must stay in attention when considering the position control problem for this class of hydraulic servo systems.

Previous research has shown that hydraulic systems offer potentially the lightest and smallest regenerative braking technology for heavy goods vehicles. This paper takes the most practical embodiment of a hydraulic system for an articulated urban delivery vehicle and investigates the best specification for the various components, based on a simulated stop-start cycle. Energy saving in mobile hydraulic machinery, aimed to fuel consumption reduction, has been one of the principal interests of many researchers and OEMs in the last years. Many different solutions have been proposed and investigated in the literature in order to improve the fuel efficiency, from novel system architectures and strategies to control the system to hybrid solutions. This thesis deals with the energy analysis of a hydraulic system of a middle size excavator through mathematical tools. In order to conduct the analyses the multibody mathematical model of the hydraulic excavator under investigation will be developed and validated on the basis of experimental activities, both on test bench and on the field. The analyses will be carried out considering the typical working cycles of the excavators defined by the JCMAS standard. The simulations results will be analysed and discussed in detail in order to define different solutions for the energy saving in LS hydraulic systems. Among the proposed energy saving solutions, energy recovery systems seem to be very promising for fuel consumption reduction in mobile machinery. In this thesis a novel energy recovery system architecture will be proposed and described in detail. Its dimensioning procedure takes advantage of the dynamic programming algorithm and a prototype will be realized and tested on the excavator under investigation. Finally the energy saving proposed solutions will be compared referring to the standard machinery architecture and a novel hybrid excavator with an energy saving up to 11% will be presented.

The fluids used in hydraulic systems inevitably contain large numbers of small, solid particles, a phenomenon known as 'fluid contamination'. Particles enter a hydraulic system from the environment, and are generated within it by processes of wear. At the same time, particles are removed from the system fluid by sedimentation and in hydraulic filters. This thesis considers the problems caused by fluid contamination, as they affect a manufacturer of axial piston pumps. The specific project aim was to investigate methods of predicting or determining the effects of fluid contamination on this type of pump. The thesis starts with a theoretical analysis of the contaminated lubrication of a slipper-pad bearing. Statistical methods are used to develop a model of the blocking, by particles, of the control capillaries used in such bearings. The results obtained are compared to published, experimental data. Poor correlation between theory and practice suggests that more research is required in this area before such theoretical analysis can be used in industry. Accelerated wear tests have been developed in the U.S.A. in an attempt to predict pump life when operating on contaminated fluids. An analysis of such tests shows that reliability data can only be obtained from extensive test programmes. The value of contamination testing is suggested to be in determining failure modes, and in identifying those pump components which are susceptible to the effects of contamination. A suitable test is described, and the results of a series of tests on axial piston pumps are presented and discussed. The thesis concludes that pump reliability data can only be obtained from field experience. The level of confidence which can be placed in results from normal laboratory testing is shown to be too low for the data to be of real value. Recommendations are therefore given for the ways in which service data should be collected and analysed.

Summary of Actions Towards Sustainable Outcomes Environmental Issues / Principal Impacts The increased growth of cities is intensifying its impact on people and the environment through: • increased use of energy for the heating and cooling of more buildings, leading to urban heat islands and more greenhouse gas emissions • increased amount of hard surfaces contributing to higher temperatures in cities and more stormwater runoff • degraded air quality and noise impact • reduced urban biodiversity • compromised health and general well-being of people Basic Strategies In many design situations boundaries and constraints limit the application of cutting EDGe actions. In these circumstances designers should at least consider the following: • Consider green roofs early in the design process in consultation with all stakeholders to enable maximised integration with building systems and to mitigate building cost (avoid constructing as a retrofit). • Design of the green roof as part of a building’s structural, mechanical and hydraulic systems could lead to structural efficiency, the ability to optimise cooling benefits and better integrated water recycling systems. • Inform the selection of the type of green roof by considering its function, for example designing for social activity, required maintenance/access regime, recycling of water or habitat regeneration or a combination of uses. • Evaluate existing surroundings to determine possible links to the natural environment and choice of vegetation for the green roof with availability of local plant supply and expertise. Cutting EDGe Strategies • Create green roofs to contribute positively to the environment through reduced urban heat island effect and building temperatures, to improved stormwater quality, increased natural habitats, provision of social spaces and opportunity for increased local food supply. • Maximise solar panel efficiency by incorporating with design of green roof. • Integrate multiple functions for a single green roof such as grey water recycling, food production, more bio-diverse plantings, air quality improvement and provision of delightful spaces for social interaction. The main difficulties encountered in the development of microscale fluidic pumping systems stem from the fact that these systems tend to comprise highly three-dimensional parts, which are incompatible with traditional microproduction technologies. Regardless of the type of pumping principle, most of the hydraulic systems contain valves and in particular a one-way valve. This paper presents the design and modelling of an ortho-planar one-way microvalve. The main advantages of such a valve are that it is very compact and can be made from a single flat piece of material. An analytical model of the spring deflection has been developed and compared to FEM. A prototype with a bore of 1.5 mm has been build using a micro EDM (electro discharge machining) machine and also tested. © 2006 International Federation for Information Processing.

Electro-hydraulic servo-systems are widely employed in industrial applications such as robotic manipulators, active suspensions, precision machine tools and aerospace systems. They provide many advantages over electric motors, including high force to weight ratio, fast response time and compact size. However, precise control of electro-hydraulic systems, due to their inherent nonlinear characteristics, cannot be easily obtained with conventional linear controllers. Most flow control valves can also exhibit some hard nonlinearities such as deadzone due to valve spool overlap on the passage´s orifice of the fluid. This work describes the development of a nonlinear controller based on the feedback linearization method and including a fuzzy compensation scheme for an electro-hydraulic actuated system with unknown dead-band. On the field of the projects of hydraulic systems exists a lot of worries when we talk about the calculate of hydraulic pumps. In this case some facts must be considerate: length of tubes, fluid characteristics, height gauge, temperature, pressure, characteristics of tubes, flow required and others. For that mathematic calculates must be developed with the objective to optimize hydraulic pumps and agree to find an ideal machine (that don't requires more energy than necessary or less energy than it requires; that is the more critical case, cause exists the risk that the fluid pumped do not agree to become in your destiny). The wrong calculate of this machine can super-size its, bringing an excessive energy consumption. Actually it's an important subject because we are in the age of lack of energy what turn it more expensive. So the correct sizing of a hydraulic pump is connected with the fact that you have to uses the enough energy resources avoiding waste. The calculate of ideal pump in the pumping system is studied during years and a lot of specialists in this subject develop equations and theories to calculate its. Some researches study about this subject and all of them become to the same conclusion: to find the ideal pump we have to know the characteristics of fluid (cinematic viscosity), the required flow , overall yield (overall of motor x overall of pump) the high gauge or discharge pressure and the loss of repression. The pressure drop can be calculated with different theories: using Hazen-Williams, Darcy e Weisbach or Chézy (1775 - that starts the researches to calculate the pressure drop). Although the most used theory and what is most near to reality is the Darcy's equation. So, in this job the Darcy's equation were choice to calculate the drop pressure that consider what kind of flow we are studying: laminar or turbulent. Este proyecto nace de la necesidad de automatizar el estudio de sistemas hidráulicos y de control de roturas en presas. Para realizar el estudio de sistemas hidráulicos se usarán un número indeterminado de sensores de nivel, presión y caudal. El número de sensores que se pueden utilizar viene determinado por el material disponible. Estos sensores se conectarán a unas tarjetas de National Instruments modelo NI 9208 y éstas a su vez a un chasis modelo CompactDAQ NI-9174 con cuatro ranuras. Conectando este chasis al ordenador podremos obtener los datos provenientes de los sensores. También se podrá controlar una válvula para determinar la cantidad de agua que fluye en nuestro experimento. Está válvula está conectada a una tarjeta NI-9264 que se conectará al chasis en su última posición Para detectar y estudiar posibles roturas en presas se dispone de un motor y un láser con los cuales se puede barrer la superficie de una presa y obtener una imagen en tres dimensiones de la misma procesando los datos provenientes del laser. Para recoger los datos de los sensores y controlar una válvula se ha desarrollado una aplicación utilizando LabVIEW, un programa creado por National Instruments. Para poder controlar el motor y el láser se parte de una aplicación que ya estaba realizada en LabVIEW. El objetivo ha sido detectar y corregir una serie de errores en la misma. Dentro del proyecto, además de la explicación detallada de la aplicación para los sensores y la válvula, y las pruebas realizadas para detectar y corregir los errores de la aplicación del láser y el motor, existe: una breve introducción a la programación en LabVIEW, la descripción de los pasos realizados para el conexionado de los sensores con las tarjetas, los manuales de usuario de las aplicaciones y la descripción de los equipos utilizados. This project stars from the need to automate the study of hydraulic systems and control dam breaks. For the study of hydraulic systems it will be used an unspecified number of level, pressure and flow sensors. The number of sensors that can be used is determined by the available material. These sensors are connected to a NI 9208 National Instruments target and these cards to a NI-9174 CompactDAQ chassis with four slots. Connecting the chassis to a computer we will obtain data from the sensors. We also can control a valve to determine the amount of water flowing in our experiment. This valve is connected to a NI-9264 card and this card to the last position of the chassis. To detect and study dams breakage it used a motor and a laser. With these two devices we can scan the surface of a dam and obtain a three-dimensional image processing data from the laser. To collect data from the sensors and control the valve it has developed an application using LabVIEW, a program created by National Instruments. To control the motor and the laser it is used an application that was already created using LabVIEW. The aim of this part has been detect and correct a number of errors in this application. Within the project, in addition to the detailed explanation of the application for sensors and valve, and tests to detect and correct errors in the application of lasers and the motor, there is: a brief introduction to programming in LabVIEW, the description of the steps taken for connecting the sensors with cards, user manuals and application description of the equipment used.

Este trabalho apresenta o controle de posição e orientação de um modelo não linear de Plataforma de Stewart com seis graus de liberdade construído no ambiente de sistemas multicorpos ADAMS® desenvolvido pela Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. O modelo não linear é exportado para o ambiente SIMULINK® desenvolvido pela MathWorks, Inc., onde o controle de posição e orientação é realizado a partir da linearização do modelo e a aplicação de um sistema seguidor com realimentação de estados. Utililiza-se, também o SIMULINK® para implementar a dinâmica de um sistema servoválvula e cilindro hidráulico com um servocontrole de pressão e assim simular o comportamento dinâmico de um simulador de vôo com acionamento hidráulico. A utilização destes pacotes comerciais visa obter uma economia de tempo e esforço na modelagem de sistemas mecânicos complexos e na programação para obtenção da resposta do sistema no tempo, além de facilitar a análise de várias configurações de Plataformas de Stewart
