Tipos de resistência a Alabama Argillacea (Huebner, 1818) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) envolvidos em genótipos de algodoeiro: II. Antibiose

Cotton genotypes resistance to Alabama argillacea (Huebner, 1818) due to antibiosis has been evaluated in laboratory trials (at 27 ± 2°C, 70 ± 10% relative humidity and 14 hours photoperiod). Six different genetic materials (T 1122-13-1, STO 285 N, JPM 157, T 953-13-4-2, CNPA 9211-21, and CNPA 9211-31) have been tested in a completely randomized experimental design, with ten replications, each one with ten larvae/genotype. Larvae have been supplied with leaves daily. The following variables have been scored: time length of several insect stages (from larvae to adult), average mass of larvae and pupae as well as average larval, pre-pupal and pupal mortality rates. All genotypes have revealed longer overall average time length of stage duration from larvae to adult, as compared to STO 285 N; however, CNPA 9211-31 and CNPA 9211-21 have shown the smallest average mass of pupae along with high frequencies of pre-pupae and larvae to adult mortalities. The results strongly suggest that antibiosis is one of the resistance mechanisms to A. argillacea in that two cotton genotypes.

Propiedades psicométricas de la Escala de Satisfacción con la Vida en los Estudiantes (SLSS) de Huebner en niños y niñas de 10 a 12 años de Chile

Este trabajo analiza las propiedades psicométricas de la escala SLSS de Huebner en una muestra de niños y niñas chilenos. Se aplicó a 1096 estudiantes de 10 a 12 años (M=11; DT= 0.89) que asistían a establecimientos municipales, particulares subvencionados y particulares pagados en las ciudades de Santiago, Valparaíso y Concepción. Se realizaron análisis de fiabilidad de consistencia interna, análisis factorial exploratorio (AFE) y confirmatorio (AFE). Los resultados exhiben una aceptable fiabilidad en tanto consistencia interna de la escala (α=.86), el análisis factorial arroja dos factores en la estructura factorial de la escala que se corresponden con satisfacción con la vida y deseo de cambio. Se discute la solución bifactorial del modelo seleccionado en tanto no se corresponde con lo comunmente reportado en otras investigaciones. El estudio reporta resultados del uso de SLSS en población infantil y aporta al uso y desarrollo de herramientas de medición de autorreporte para el estudio del bienestar subjetivo en niños chilenos.

Privacy by Design : Does it matter for social networks?

Privacy is an important component of freedom and plays a key role in protecting fundamental human rights. It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fact that without appropriate levels of privacy, a person’s rights are diminished. Users want to protect their privacy - particularly in “privacy invasive” areas such as social networks. However, Social Network users seldom know how protect their own privacy through online mechanisms. What is required is an emerging concept that provides users legitimate control over their own personal information, whilst preserving and maintaining the advantages of engaging with online services such as Social Networks. This paper reviews “Privacy by Design (PbD)” and shows how it applies to diverse privacy areas. Such an approach will move towards mitigating many of the privacy issues in online information systems and can be a potential pathway for protecting user’s personal information. The research has posed many questions in need of further investigation for different open source distributed Social Networks. Findings from this research will lead to a novel distributed architecture that provides more transparent and accountable privacy for the users of online information systems.

Yhh1p/Cft1p directly links poly(A) site recognition and RNA polymerase II transcription termination

RNA polymerase II (pol II) transcription termination requires co‐transcriptional recognition of a functional polyadenylation signal, but the molecular mechanisms that transduce this signal to pol II remain unclear. We show that Yhh1p/Cft1p, the yeast homologue of the mammalian AAUAAA interacting protein CPSF 160, is an RNA‐binding protein and provide evidence that it participates in poly(A) site recognition. Interestingly, RNA binding is mediated by a central domain composed of predicted β‐propeller‐forming repeats, which occurs in proteins of diverse cellular functions. We also found that Yhh1p/Cft1p bound specifically to the phosphorylated C‐terminal domain (CTD) of pol II in vitro and in a two‐hybrid test in vivo. Furthermore, transcriptional run‐on analysis demonstrated that yhh1 mutants were defective in transcription termination, suggesting that Yhh1p/Cft1p functions in the coupling of transcription and 3′‐end formation. We propose that direct interactions of Yhh1p/Cft1p with both the RNA transcript and the CTD are required to communicate poly(A) site recognition to elongating pol II to initiate transcription termination.

Independent functions of yeast Pcf11p in pre-mRNA 3' end processing and in transcription termination

Pcf11p, an essential subunit of the yeast cleavage factor IA, is required for pre‐mRNA 3′ end processing, binds to the C‐terminal domain (CTD) of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) and is involved in transcription termination. We show that the conserved CTD interaction domain (CID) of Pcf11p is essential for cell viability. Interestingly, the CTD binding and 3′ end processing activities of Pcf11p can be functionally uncoupled from each other and provided by distinct Pcf11p fragments in trans. Impaired CTD binding did not affect the 3′ end processing activity of Pcf11p and a deficiency of Pcf11p in 3′ end processing did not prevent CTD binding. Transcriptional run‐on analysis with the CYC1 gene revealed that loss of cleavage activity did not correlate with a defect in transcription termination, whereas loss of CTD binding did. We conclude that Pcf11p is a bifunctional protein and that transcript cleavage is not an obligatory step prior to RNAP II termination.
