The flow patterns in a high shear granulator depend on the fill volume. For example, DEM simulations reported by Terashita et al. [1] show that fill volume affects the velocities and kinetic energies of the particles. It also influences the granule size distribution [2]. Here the effects on the properties of the granule are described. The total mass of the granulate material was varied without changing the other variables such as impeller speed, granulation time and liquid to solid ratio. The resulting mechanical properties, such as strength, yield stress and Young's modulus, of the granules were measured. For the materials studied in the current work, increasing the fill factor (batch size) increased the values of these material parameters. This could be explained by the relative increase in the number and intensity of collisions between the particles, when the size of a batch was increased, leading to smaller porosities. Gas fluidised beds have many applications in a wide range of industrial sectors and it is important to be able to predict their performance. This requires, for example, a deeper appreciation of the flow of the particles in such systems using both empirical and numerical methods. The coefficient of restitution is an important collisional parameter that is used in some granular flow models in order to predict the velocities and positions of the particles in fluidised beds. The current paper reports experimental data involving the coefficients of restitution of three different representative types of granule viz. melt, wet and binderless granules. They were measured at various impact velocities and the values were compared with those calculated from different theoretical models based on quasi-static contact mechanics. This required knowledge of the Young's moduli and yield stresses, which were measured quasi-statically using diametric compression. The results show that the current theoretical models for the coefficient of restitution explored here lead to either an over- or an under-estimation of the measured values. The melt granules exhibited the greatest values of the coefficient of restitution, Young's modulus and yield stress. The differences in these values were consistent with the nature of the interparticle bonding for each of the three granule types. A new model for the calculation of the coefficient of restitution of granular material was developed that takes account of the work hardening of the granules during impact. Generally, this model provides an improved prediction of the measured values. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Being able to predict the properties of granules from the knowledge of the process and formulation variables is what most industries are striving for. This research uses experimental design to investigate the effect of process variables and formulation variables on mechanical properties of pharmaceutical granules manufactured from a classical blend of lactose and starch using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as the binder. The process parameters investigated were granulation time and impeller speed whilst the formulation variables were starch-to-lactose ratio and HPC concentration. The granule properties investigated include granule packing coefficient and granule strength. The effect of some components of the formulation on mechanical properties would also depend on the process variables used in granulation process. This implies that by subjecting the same formulation to different process conditions results in products with different properties. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Impeller speed is one of the most crucial process variables that affect the properties of the granules produced in a high-shear granulator. Several reports can be found in literature that discuss the influence of impeller speed on the granules size. For instance some researchers like Knight report an increase of granule size with impeller speed [1] and [2], while others (Scheaefer et al. and Ramaker et al.) observed a decrease of granules size with increasing impeller speed [3] and [4]. However there is limited work reported in literature on the effect of the impeller speed on the mechanical properties of granules. Mechanical properties are important as they affect the performance of the granules on the other downstream process such as transportation and handling. The work reported here serves to address the missing in knowledge gap regarding the influence of impeller speed on mechanical properties granules. How the granulation system responds to the changes in the impeller speeds depends on binder that is used in the process. For this reason the two extreme cases, of a low viscosity binder system and high viscosity binder system are considered in this research. For low viscosity binder system it was observed that the granule size decreased with increasing impeller speed whilst for the high viscosity binder system the opposite was observed by Knight [1]. The granule strength, the Young's modulus and yield strength of the high viscosity granules increased with increasing impeller speed where as the opposite trends were observed for the low viscosity binder granules.

This paper describes an investigation of the effect of fill factor; on the compaction behaviour of the granules during tableting and hence mechanical properties of tablets formed. The fill factor; which is the ratio of volume of wet powder material to vessel volume of the granulator, was used as an indicator of batch size. It has been established previously that in high shear granulation the batch size influences the size distribution and granule mechanical properties [1]. The work reported in this paper is an extension to the work presented in [1], hence granules from the same batches were used in production of tablets. The same tabletting conditions were employed during tabletting to allow a comparison of their properties. The compaction properties of the granules are inferred from the data generated during the tabletting process. The tablet strength and dissolution properties of the tablets were also measured. The results obtained show that the granule batch size affects the strength and dissolution of the tablets formed. The tablets produced from large batches were found to be weaker and had a faster dissolution rate. The fill factor was also found to affect the tablet to tablet variation of a non-functional active pharmaceutical ingredient included in the feed powder. Tablets produced from larger batches show greater variation compared to those from smaller batches.

Groundwater is an important resource in the UK, with 45% of public water supplies in the Thames Water region derived from subterranean sources. In urban areas, groundwater has been affected by onthropogenic activities over 0 long period of time and from a multitude of sources, At present, groundwater quality is assessed using a range of chemical species to determine the extent of contamination. However, analysing a complex mixture of chemicals is time-consuming and expensive, whereas the use of an ecotoxicity test provides information on (a) the degree of pollution present in the groundwater and (b) the potential effect of that pollution. Microtox (TM), Eclox (TM) and Daphnia magna microtests were used in conjunction with standard chemical protocols to assess the contamination of groundwaters from sites throughout the London Borough of Hounslow and nearby Heathrow Airport. Because of their precision, range of responses and ease of use, Daphnia magna and Microfox (TM) tests are the bioassays that appear to be most effective for assessing groundwater toxicity However, neither test is ideal because it is also essential to monitor water hardness. Eclox (TM) does not appear to be suitable for use in groundwater-quality assessment in this area, because it is adversely affected by high total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity.

This paper reports the results of fieldwork conducted in the 2010 and 2011 DMP field seasons and of analysis of samples collected during these and previous years. Research has involved 1) studying palaeolake sediment outcrops, 2) using ground penetrating radar (GPR) to determine their extent under the Dahān Ubārī, and 3) coring palaeolakes in order to determine their palaeoenvironmental records. Research on these samples is continuing but some initial findings are discussed in this paper. The most extensive palaeolake sediments are found within the al-Mahruqah Formation and were deposited by a giant lake system that developed in the Fazzān Basin during past humid periods. Stratigraphic analysis of Lake Megafazzān sediments suggests two different sedimentary successions, a lake margin succession distinctive for its lacustrine and palaeosol carbonates, and a clastic-dominated, intensely rootleted, basin-centre succession which has terrestrial intervals (aeolian and palaeosols) as well as in the upper parts lacustrine limestones. Both basin margin and basin centre successions are underlain by fluvial deposits. Magnetostratigraphy suggests that the formation may be as old as the mid-Pliocene. After the Lake Megafazzān phase, smaller palaeolakes developed within the basin during subsequent humid periods. One of the largest is found in the Wādī al-Hayāt in the area between Jarma and Ubārī. Similar deposits further west along the Wādī at progressively higher altitudes are interpreted as small lakes and marshes fed by springs issuing from aquifers at the base of the escarpment, last replenished during the Holocene humid phase. Dating of sediments suggests that this was between c. 11 and c. 8 ka. The Wādī ash-Shāţī palaeolake core also provides a Holocene palaeoclimate record that paints a slightly different picture, indicating lake conditions until around 7 ka, whereupon it started oscillating until around 5.5 ka when sedimentation terminates. The reasons for the differences in these records are discussed.

Following the Supreme Court decisions in Manchester CC v Pinnock and Hounslow CC v Powell, this article examines the possible impact of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms upon protection of the home in creditor repossession proceedings. The central argument advanced is that, although occupiers may not all be protected through property law, they may enjoy an independent right to respect for their home under Article 8, which should be acknowledged in the legal frameworks governing creditor's enforcement rights against the home. The article suggests that the most common creditor enforcement route, through mortgage repossession proceedings, falls short in this regard. It takes as its primary focus the treatment of children in such proceedings to provide an example of the potential for a human rights-based property protection heralded by these two Supreme Court decisions.
