El treball d'Andrej Holm, sociòleg urbà alemany, està centrat en els processos de reestructuració urbana esdevinguts a les ciutats alemanyes, particularment als barris cèntrics de Berlín. La seva postura crítica davant la imposició d'un règim urbà neoliberal a partir de la caiguda del Mur està en consonància amb el seu paper actiu dins els moviments socials. En aquesta entrevista, Andrej Holm explica les conseqüències derivades d'aquesta militància: després d'uns mesos en què va estar sotmès a vigilància secreta, l'estiu de 2007 va ser detingut, acusat de pertànyer a un grup terrorista. Els conceptes recurrents als seus textos acadèmics, com ara el de "gentrificació", així com el seu accés a recursos bibliogràfics, van ser utilitzats com a arguments contra ell. A partir d'aquests fets, esdevinguts en un moment en què els Estats fan servir la política antiterrorista com a forma de control de les dissidències i en què l'autonomia acadèmica és objecte de restriccions, Andrej Holm reflexiona sobre la possibilitat d'unes ciències socials crítiques.

We investigated the role of urban Holm Oak (Quercus ilex L.) trees as airborne metal accumulators and metals' environmental fate. Analyses confirmed Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn as main contaminants in Siena's urban environment; only Pb concentrations decreased significantly compared to earlier surveys. Additionally, we determined chemical composition of tree leaves, litter and topsoil (underneath/outside tree crown) in urban and extra-urban oak stands. Most notably, litter in urban samples collected outside the canopy had significantly lower concentrations of organic matter and higher concentrations of Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn than litter collected underneath the canopy. There was a greater metals' accumulation in topsoil, in samples collected under the tree canopy and especially near the trunk ('stemflow area'). Thus, in urban ecosystems the Holm Oak stands likely increase the soil capability to bind metals.

Holm oak (Quercus ilex), a widespread urban street tree in the Mediterranean region, is widely used as biomonitor of persistent atmospheric pollutants, especially particulate-bound metals. By using lab- and field-based experimental approaches, we compared the leaf-level capacity for particles’ capture and retention between Q. ilex and other common Mediterranean urban trees: Quercus cerris, Platanus × hispanica, Tilia cordata and Olea europaea. All applied methods were effective in quantifying particulate capture and retention, although not univocal in ranking species performances. Distinctive morphological features of leaves led to differences in species’ ability to trap and retain particles of different size classes and to accumulate metals after exposure to traffic in an urban street. Overall, P. × hispanica and T. cordata showed the largest capture potential per unit leaf area for most model particles (Na+ and powder particles), and street-level Cu and Pb, while Q. ilex acted intermediately. After wash-off experiments, P. × hispanica leaves had the greatest retention capacity among the tested species and O. europaea the lowest. We concluded that the Platanus planting could be considered in Mediterranean urban environments due to its efficiency in accumulating and retaining airborne particulates; however, with atmospheric pollution being typically higher in winter, the evergreen Q. ilex represents a better year-round choice to mitigate the impact of airborne particulate pollutants.

This paper is concerned with a link between central extensions of N = 2 superconformal algebra and a supersymmetric two-component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation. Deformations of superconformal algebra give rise to two compatible bracket structures. One of the bracket structures is derived from the central extension and admits a momentum operator which agrees with the Sobolev norm of a co-adjoint orbit element. The momentum operator induces, via Lenard relations, a chain of conserved Hamiltonians of the resulting supersymmetric Camassa-Holm hierarchy.

In this paper a relation between the Camassa-Holm equation and the non-local deformations of the sinh-Gordon equation is used to study some properties of the former equation. We will show that cuspon and soliton solutions can be obtained from soliton solutions of the deformed sinh-Gordon equation.

In this Letter we investigate Lie symmetries of a (2 + 1)-dimensional integrable generalization of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation. Through the similarity reductions we obtain four different (1 + 1)-dimensional systems of partial differential equations in which one of them turns out to be a (1 + 1)-dimensional CH equation. We establish their integrability by providing the Lax pair for all of them. Further, we present a brief analysis for some types of particular solutions which include the cuspon, peakon and soliton solutions for the two-dimensional generalization of the CH equation. The interaction of different kinds of solitary waves of the Camassa-Holm equation is investigated. We consider soliton-soliton, soliton-cuspon and cuspon-cuspon interactions. The description of these solutions had previously been shown to be reducible to the solution of an algebraic equation. Here we give explicit examples, numerically solving these algebraic equations and plotting the corresponding solutions. Further, we show that the interaction is elastic and leads to a shift in the position of the solitons or cuspons. We give the analytical expressions for this shift and represent graphically the coupled soliton-cuspon, soliton-soliton and cuspon-cuspon interactions.
