Se centra en el estudio de los personajes femeninos de otras etnias, con el fin de examinar que modelo de mujer se transmitía a los niños y a las niñas a través del imaginario de los manuales escolares. Se analizan 394 manuales españoles, 111 libros de texto holandeses y 95 libros franceses. A la luz de los resultados obtenidos llama la atención la invisibilidad de estos personajes. Las minorías étnicas o raciales apenas están representadas en la iconografía de los manuales escolares. Otro aspecto a destacar es la imagen negativa de ciertos grupos y la estereotipación al representarse a ciertos grupos siempre en el mismo papel.

El texto es una crítica del libro de Ernst Gombrich “Historia del Arte”, obra antigua y traducida a muchos idiomas, pero que en 2011 ha publicado la edición de bolsillo en castellano. La crítica no entra mucho en el contenido, sólo en algunos aspectos, y se centra en los comentarios acerca de la antología de la historia del arte universal que el autor hace. Así se critica el hecho de la poca presencia del arte español, en general, y sobre todo de la poca presencia de la colección española de pintura en el Museo del Prado, la mejor pinacoteca del mundo. También, de la poco acertada elección de algunos ejemplos y de la sobreabundancia de referencias al arte de carácter menor del Reino Unido o de Holanda. El autor deplora igualmente la falta de sentido de las referencias a la arquitectura a partir del barroco, y, en cuanto al contenido, al mantenimiento de la vieja y ofensiva tesis de la supremacía del arte de los países protestantes sobre el de los católicos.

El espacio geográfico, entendido como territorio que da soporte a la vida y a la civilización, ha estado siempre fuertemente supeditado a la presencia de agua. Desde la Prehistoria el hombre otorgó al agua, junto a otros elementos que aseguraban o protegían su vida, un valor superior, por encima de lo humano. Paralelamente y de manera natural, el jardín, en sus inicios en estrecha relación con la agricultura y con el paisaje, fue el ámbito idóneo para la creación de nuevas formas acuáticas artificiales. Este proceso dio lugar a un extenso repertorio de formas compositivas que parece que tuvo en el Renacimiento un punto de inflexión, en el que se observa como la mayoría de recursos y configuraciones básicas del agua estaban ya plenamente establecidas. Esta evolución y sus resultados ha sido el objeto de la primera parte de la tesis: su objetivo ha sido analizar cómo el agua configura, cualifica o puede llegar a construir el jardín y el territorio en el que se inserta, así como establecer las posibles relaciones entre estos dos ámbitos de estudio. Aunque la historia es su fundamento, el planteamiento aquí ha sido más bien conceptual; estudiando los componentes acuáticos desde un punto de vista fundamentalmente compositivo. Esta indagación previa ha sido indispensable para llegar a entender en profundidad los modos en los que el agua se muestra en el jardín y en el paisaje renacentista y manierista, momentos en que se insertan los dos casos de estudio que constituyen la segunda parte de la tesis. Sin caer en un determinismo geográfico extremo, puede admitirse que el jardín, como manifestación cultural intrínsecamente ligada al entorno, depende fuertemente del territorio en el que se asienta; hecho particularmente evidente en aquellas regiones en las que su especial geografía ha sido un claro factor condicionante de su historia. Por ello, Holanda y España han sido las dos localizaciones elegidas para profundizar en este estudio; no tanto por su estrecha relación política y cultural, sino por su profundo y sugerente contraste de medio físico y climático. La Península Ibérica, geográficamente el término del mundo conocido en Occidente hasta el final de la Edad Media, y por esta circunstancia convertida en destino, en territorio de permanencia y fusión, estará además supeditada en la mayoría de su territorio a la falta de agua, siendo a la vez heredera directa del universo y la tradición del jardín meridional originario de Oriente. En el extremo opuesto, Holanda, espacio de transición entre el mar y la tierra firme “real”, es un territorio permeado de humedad y surcado con generosidad por grandes ríos. El país, con una relación ambivalente con el agua, unas veces como amenaza y otras como fuente de nuevas oportunidades, será por el contrario especialmente favorable para el desarrollo de un modelo de jardín septentrional. Un jardín del norte, que no obstante, no surgirá de despejar los bosques, como en el arquetipo nórdico, sino que crecerá sobre planicies antes saturadas de agua o directamente anegadas. El marco temporal de los dos casos concretos ha considerado como fecha inicial 1548, momento en el que Felipe II, aún príncipe, realizó su primer viaje a los Países Bajos, y entró en contacto con el modelo holandés. La extensa producción posterior de jardines de Felipe II, siempre con el agua como protagonista, tuvo como destacado referente la adaptación al suelo y la geografía hispánicos de dicho modelo. Como fecha final se fija 1648, justo un siglo después, fecha coincidente con la firma de la Paz de Westfalia, tratado que supone la total reorganización política del territorio europeo y la pérdida de la hegemonía española en Europa. En Holanda sólo dos años después nacerá Guillermo III de Orange, estatúder de las Provincias Unidas, también futuro rey de Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda. Para entonces en Holanda ya se había asistido al desarrollo de un arte propio de jardín, íntimamente ligado al agua, sorprendentemente no demasiado bien conocido y que será uno de los temas de esta investigación. Finalmente, se propone una lectura conjunta de toda esta serie de intervenciones que tienen como argumento el agua, en la que se integra la información procedente de distintos campos de estudio, cada una con su metodología particular. El resultado es una tesis en la que el jardín y el territorio son tratados desde un nuevo y enriquecedor punto de vista. ABSTRACT Geographical space, understood as the territory that provides support to human life and civilization, has always been strongly subjected to the presence of water. From Prehistory man gave to water, along with other elements that ensured or protected life, a higher value than the merely human. At the same time and in a natural way, the garden, in its beginnings with a close relationship with agriculture and landscape, soon developed as the appropriate ground for the creation of new artificial aquatic forms, in a process that seems to have a turning point in the Renaissance, when most of the basic waterworks and resources were already fully established. This development and its outcomes are the subjects of the first part of the thesis: its scope has been to analyse how water configures, qualifies and might even help to construct the garden or landscape attached to it; and to establish the possible links between these two fields of study. Although history based, the point of view here is mainly conceptual, studying the water components understood as composite elements. This exploratory research has been essential to deeply understand the water patterns shown in the Renaissance and Mannerist garden and landscape, periods in which the two case studies are inserted. Without falling in extreme determinism, it can be accepted however, that garden, as a cultural expression linked to environment, is strongly dependant on territorial setting; something particularly evident in those areas where specific geography has been a clear history conditioning factor. This is the reason that leads to choose the Netherlands and Spain to deepen this study, no so much for their interesting cultural and politics relations as for the suggestive and profound contrast of their physical environment and climate. The Iberian Peninsula, geographically the limit of the known world in Occident until the end of the Medium Age, and by this circumstance understood as endpoint, more a destination than a crossroad, a territory of permanence and fusion, but also subjected to water shortage; is thus associated with the universe and tradition of the meridional garden imported from Orient. In the opposite, the Netherlands, a transitional space between the sea and the “real” firm land, is a territory permeated by water and crossed by big rivers. Always with an ambivalent relationship with water, sometimes seen as a threat and sometimes as a source of new opportunities, it was in the other hand the adequate land for the development of a special model of Northern garden. A garden that will not arise, however, from the clearing of woods as in the Nordic archetype, but that will grow on plains originally saturated of water or directly waterlogged. The timeframe of the two cases has 1548 as the initial year, moment in which Philip II, yet prince, made his first trip to the Low Lands and imbibed the Dutch garden model. The later and bountiful garden works of the king, always with the water as the main focus, adapted the imported model to the Spanish ground and geography. The final date is fixed in 1648, just a century after, in coincidence with the Westfalia Peace; a treaty that implied the total political reorganization of the European territory and the end of the Spanish hegemony in the continent. In Holland, only two years later, William III of Orange, Stadtholder of the United Provinces and also future king of England, Scotland and Ireland, was born. But by then the Netherlands had developed an own garden art, closely linked to water. This type garden, surprisingly not very well known, and its relationship with water, will be other of the addressing questions of this work. Finally, the investigation merges the different interventions that have water as an argument, integrating all the fields considered with their particular methodological approaches. The final result is a thesis in which garden and territory are treated from a new and enriching perspective.

El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en oponer dos modos de fundamentar los sistemas políticos: el primero se basa en apelar a la historia y a la identidad nacional; mientras que el segundo pone el acento en los mecanismos institucionales. Vamos a tratar estas dos maneras de entender la política a partir del ejemplo de la Holanda de los siglos XVI y XVII, con la utilización que en esta época se hizo del mito Bátavo y del mito de Venecia. Mientras que el mito bátavo es sólo histórico, el mito de Venecia tiene un componente histórico y un aspecto político y constitucional, que representa Espinosa.

The dissertation "From Conceptual to Corporeal, from Quotation to Site: Painting and History of Contemporary Art" explores the state of painting in contemporary art and art theory since the 1960s. The purpose of the study is to re-consider the dominant "end of painting" -narrative in contemporary art history, which goes back to the modernist ideology of painting as a reductive, medium-specific form of art. Drawing on Michel Foucault´s concepts of discursive formation and archive, as well as Jean-Luc Nancy´s post-phenomenological philosophy on corporeality, I suggest that contemporary painting can be redefined as a discursive-sensuous practice. Instead of seeing painting as obsolete or over as an avantgarde art genre, I show that there have been alternative, neo-avantgardist ways of defining painting since the end of the 1960s, such as French artist Daniel Buren´s early writings on painting as "theoretical practice". Consequently, the tendency of the canonical Anglo-American contemporary art narratives to underestimate the historical and institutional codes of art can be questioned. This tendency can be seen, for example, in Rosalind Krauss´s influential theory on index. The study also reflects the relations between conceptual art and painting since the 1960s and maps recent theories of painting, which re-examine the genre´s possibilities after the modernist rhetoric. Concepts of "flatbed", "painting in the extended field", "as painting" and so on are compared critically with the idea of painting as discursive practice. It is also shown that the issues in painting arise from the contemporary critical art debate while the dematerialisation paradigm of conceptual art has dissolved. The study focuses on the corporeal-material-sensuous -cluster of meanings attached to painting and searches for its avantgardist possibilities as redefined by postfeminist and post-phenomenological discourse. The ideas of hierarchy of the senses and synesthesia are developed within the framework of Jean-Luc Nancy´s and Luce Irigaray´s thought. The parameters for the study have been Finnish painting from 1990 to 2002. On the Finnish art scene there has been no "end of painting" ideology, strictly speaking. The mythology and medium-specificity of modernism have been deconstructed since the mid-1980s, but "the archive" of painting, like themes of abstraction, formalism and synesthesia have been re-worked by the discursive practice of painting, for example, in the works of Nina Roos, Tarja Pitkänen-Walter and Jussi Niva.

In 1952 Helsinki hosted the Summer Olympic Games and Armi Kuusela, the current “Maiden of Finland”, was at the same time crowned Miss Universe. In popular history writing, these events have been designated as a crucial turning point – the end of an era marked by war and deprivation and the beginning of a modern, Western nation. Symptomatically, both events were marked by Finnish women’s sexual relationships with foreign men. The Olympics were shadowed by a concern over Finnish women’s “undue friendliness” with the Olympic guests, and Armi Kuusela's world tour was cut short by her surprise marriage in Tokyo and subsequent emigration to the Philippines. This study is an inquiry into the Helsinki Olympics and the public persona of Armi Kuusela from the point of view of transnational heterosexuality and the constitution of Finnish national identity. Methodologically the two main components of the study are intersectionality, defined here as a focus on the mutual histories and effects of discourses of gender, sexuality, race and nation; and transnational history as a way of exploring the ways that both nations and sexual subjects are embedded in global relations of power. The analysis proceeds by way of contextual and intertextual readings of various sources. Part one, centering on the Olympics, involves a campaign mounted by certain women’s organizations before the Games in order to educate young women about the potential dangers of the forthcoming international event as well as magazine and newspaper articles published during and after the Games concerning the encounter between young Finnish women and foreign, especially “Southern,” men. It places the debates during the Olympics within the framework of wartime understandings of women’s sexuality; the history of the concept of decency (siveellisyys); post-war population policy; the intersectional histories of conceptions pertaining to race and sexuality; and finally, the post-war concerns over women’s migration from rural areas to the capital city and their potential emigration abroad. Part two deals with the persona of Armi Kuusela and the public reception of her world tour and marriage, based on material from both Finland and the Philippines (newspapers, magazines, advertisements, books and films). It examines the persona of Armi Kuusela as a figure of national import in terms of the East/West divide; the racialized images of different geographic climates and Oriental “Others;” the meaning of whiteness in the Philippines; the significance of class and colonial history for the domestication of sexual and racial transgressions implied by an unconventional transnational marriage; as well as the cultural logics of transnational desire and its possible meanings for women in 1950s Finland. The study develops two arguments. First, it suggests that instead of being purely oppositional to national discourses, transnational desire may also be viewed as a product of these very discourses. Second, it claims that the national significance of both the Olympics and the persona of Armi Kuusela was due to the new points of comparison they both offered for national identity construction. In comparison with the sexualized Southern men at the Olympics and the racialized Orient in the representations of Armi Kuusela’s travels and marriage, Finland emerged as part of the civilized North, placed firmly within the perimeters of Western Europe. As such, both events mark a “whitening” of the Finnish people as well as a distancing from their previous designations in racial hierarchies. At the same time, however, the process of becoming a white nation inevitably meant complying with and reproducing racial hierarchies, rather than simply abolishing them.

One history in a multicomplex world The quintessence of history and grand historical narratives in the historical consciousness of class teacher students The study analyses the conception of history amongst class teacher students at the University of Helsinki. It also explores the expectations about the future that the students have on the basis of their views on history. The conceptions of the students are analysed against the background of the notion of one history which has been part of Western thought in the modern era and which is at the centre of the theoretical framework of this study. The Enlightenment project and the erosion of the role of the Church paved the way for the notion that history is an linear narrative of the progress of humankind and in which, implicitly, the Western countries are endowed with a special role as the vanguards of progress. In recent times these assumptions have been criticised by postmodernists and proponents of New History. The material of the study consists of interviews of twenty-two 19 26 years old class teacher students at the University of Helsinki. The topics in the interviews were the developments of the past and the future trajectories. The students conceived history as a field of knowledge that provides a unifying view on the world and helps to make today s world intelligible. Finnish history and global history were invested with features of a grand narrative of progress. In global history, progress and development were seen as characteristic of the Western world primarily. The students regarded the post-war Finnish history as a qualified success story in that they deplored the erosion of collectivist values and the rise of selfishness in recent decades. History was not conceived as a process of progress that would self-evidently continue in the future, but rather more as a field of contingency and cyclical change.The students regarded the increasing predominance of the market forces over democratically elected agencies, the antagonism between the West and the other parts of the world, and environmental risks as the major threats. Notwithstanding this general.pessimism about the future, the students had a very positive view of their own personal prospects. Keywords: historical consciouness, one history, future expectations
