Im Jahre 2002 wurde mit dem NA48/1-Detektor eine Datennahme mit hoher Intensität von K_S-Mesonen und neutralen Hyperonen durchgeführt, bei der unter anderem etwa 10^9 Xi^0-Zerfallskandidaten aufgezeichnet wurden. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden aus diesem Datensatz 6657 Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e^- Anti-nü und 581 Anti-Xi^0 -> Anti-Sigma^+ e^+ nü-Ereignisse ausgewählt und damit die Verzweigungsverhältnisse BR1(Gamma(Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e^- Anti-nü)/Gamma(Xi^0 total))=( 2.533 +-0.032(stat) -0.076+0.089(syst) )10^-4 und BR2(Gamma(Anti-Xi^0 -> Anti-Sigma^+ e^+ nü)/Gamma(Anti-Xi^0 total))= ( 2.57 +-0.12(stat) -0.09+0.10(syst) )10^-4 bestimmt. Dieses Ergebnis für BR1 ist etwa 3.5-mal genauer als die bisher veröffentlichte Messung. Die Analyse der Anti-Xi^0-Beta-Zerfälle stellt die erste Messung von BR2 dar. Beide Ergebnisse stimmen mit der theoretischen Vorhersage von 2.6*10^-4 überein. Aus dem Xi^0-Beta-Verzweigungsverhältnis folgt unter Verwendung des experimentellen Wertes des Formfaktorverhältnisses g1/f1 für das CKM-Matrixelement |Vus| = 0.209 +- 0.004(exp) +- 0.026(syst), wobei die dominierende Unsicherheit von g1/f1 herrührt. Außerdem wurden in dieser Arbeit 99 Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ mu^- Anti-nü Zerfallskandidaten mit einem abgeschätzten Untergrund von 30 Ereignissen rekonstruiert und daraus ebenfalls das Verzweigungsverhältnis extrahiert: BR3(Gamma(Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ mu^- Anti-nü)/Gamma(Xi^0 total)) = ( 2.11 +- 0.31(stat) +- 0.15(syst) )10^-6.

We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2  fb-1 of pp̅ collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at √s=1.96  TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. This combined result is further combined with that of a search for a single top quark signal in an orthogonal sample of events with missing transverse energy plus jets and no charged lepton. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction but inconsistent with the background-only model by 5.0 standard deviations, with a median expected sensitivity in excess of 5.9 standard deviations. We measure a production cross section of 2.3-0.5+0.6(stat+sys)  pb, extract the value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb|=0.91-0.11+0.11(stat+sys)±0.07  (theory), and set a lower limit |Vtb|>0.71 at the 95% C.L., assuming mt=175  GeV/c2.

The consequences of adding random perturbations (anarchy) to a baseline hierarchical model of quark masses and mixings are explored. Even small perturbations of the order of 5% of the smallest non-zero element can already give deviations significantly affecting parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, so any process generating the anarchy should in general be limited to this order of magnitude. The regularities of quark masses and mixings thus appear to be far from a generic feature of randomness in the mass matrices, and more likely indicate an underlying order. Electroweak transition form factors of heavy meson decays are important ingredients in the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements from experimental data. In this work, within a. light-front framework, we calculate electroweak transition form factor for the semileptonic decay of D mesons into a pion or a kaon. The model results underestimate in both cases the new data of CLEO for the larger momentum transfers accessible in the experiment. We discuss possible reasons for that in order to improve the model.

A measurement of the single-top-quark t-channel production cross section in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. Two different and complementary approaches have been followed. The first approach exploits the distributions of the pseudorapidity of the recoil jet and reconstructed top-quark mass using background estimates determined from control samples in data. The second approach is based on multivariate analysis techniques that probe the compatibility of the candidate events with the signal. Data have been collected for the muon and electron final states, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 and 1.56 fb-1, respectively. The single-top-quark production cross section in the t-channel is measured to be 67.2±6.1 pb, in agreement with the approximate next-to-next-to-leading- order standard model prediction. Using the standard model electroweak couplings, the CKM matrix element |V tb| is measured to be 1.020 ± 0.046 (meas.) ± 0.017 (theor.). © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is a theory, describing three out of four fundamental forces. In this model the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix describes the transformation between the mass and weak eigenstates of quarks. The matrix properties can be visualized as triangles in the complex plane. A precise measurement of all triangle parameters can be used to verify the validity of the SM. The least precisely measured parameter of the triangle is related to the CKM element |Vtd|, accessible through the mixing frequency (oscillation) of neutral B mesons, where mixing is the transition of a neutral meson into its anti-particle and vice versa. It is possible to calculate the CKM element |Vtd| and a related element |Vts| by measuring the mass differences Dmd (Dms ) between neutral Bd and bar{Bd} (Bs and bar{Bs}) meson mass eigenstates. This measurement is accomplished by tagging the initial and final state of decaying B mesons and determining their lifetime. Currently the Fermilab Tevatron Collider (providing pbar{p} collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV) is the only place, where Bs oscillations can be studied. The first selection of the "golden", fully hadronic decay mode Bs->Ds pi(phi pi)X at DØ is presented in this thesis. All data, taken between April 2002 and August 2007 with the DØ detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of int{L}dt=2.8/fb is used. The oscillation frequency Dms and the ratio |Vtd|/|Vts| are determined as Dms = (16.6 +0.5-0.4(stat) +0.4-0.3(sys)) 1/ps, |Vtd|/|Vts| = 0.213 +0.004-0.003(exp)pm 0.008(theor). These results are consistent with the standard model expectations and no evidence for new physics is observable.

The beta-decay of free neutrons is a strongly over-determined process in the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics and is described by a multitude of observables. Some of those observables are sensitive to physics beyond the SM. For example, the correlation coefficients of the involved particles belong to them. The spectrometer aSPECT was designed to measure precisely the shape of the proton energy spectrum and to extract from it the electron anti-neutrino angular correlation coefficient "a". A first test period (2005/ 2006) showed the “proof-of-principles”. The limiting influence of uncontrollable background conditions in the spectrometer made it impossible to extract a reliable value for the coefficient "a" (publication: Baessler et al., 2008, Europhys. Journ. A, 38, p.17-26). A second measurement cycle (2007/ 2008) aimed to under-run the relative accuracy of previous experiments (Stratowa et al. (1978), Byrne et al. (2002)) da/a =5%. I performed the analysis of the data taken there which is the emphasis of this doctoral thesis. A central point are background studies. The systematic impact of background on a was reduced to da/a(syst.)=0.61 %. The statistical accuracy of the analyzed measurements is da/a(stat.)=1.4 %. Besides, saturation effects of the detector electronics were investigated which were initially observed. These turned out not to be correctable on a sufficient level. An applicable idea how to avoid the saturation effects will be discussed in the last chapter.

The aSPECT spectrometer has been constructed to measure, with high precision, the integral proton spectrum of the free neutron decay. From this spectrum the neutrino electron angular correlation coefficient a can be inferred. The coefficient a is involved in several Standard Model tests, like the unitarity test of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. aSPECT has been designed to determine the coefficient a with an accuracy better than 3×10−4, that is, one order of magnitude better than the best current accuracy. First measurements with neutron beam with the aSPECT spectrometer were performed in the Forschungsneutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz, in Munich. A study of the data taken in this period is presented in this thesis, demonstrating the proof of principle of the spectrometer. However, the observation of situation and time-dependent background instabilities impedes the report of a new value of the coefficient a. A thorough data analysis is carried out to identify sources of these background instabilities in order to improve the aSPECT experiment for future beam times. The investigation indicates that trapped particles are most likely the reason for the background problems. Furthermore, it has been observed that measurements containing less trapped particles provide a-values closer to the currently Particle Data Group value. Based on this findings, different measures are proposed to eliminate potential traps in the spectrometer. Indeed, with the proposed modifications realized for the following beam-times, the observed background instabilities were greatly reduced.

The free neutron beta decay correlation A0 between neutron polarization and electron emission direction provides the strongest constraint on the ratio λ = gA/gV of the Axial-vector to Vector coupling constants in Weak decay. In conjunction with the CKM Matrix element Vud and the neutron lifetime τn, λ provides a test of Standard Model assumptions for the Weak interaction. Leading high-precision measurements of A0 and τn in the 1995-2005 time period showed discrepancies with prior measurements and Standard Model predictions for the relationship between λ, τn, and Vud. The UCNA experiment was developed to measure A0 from decay of polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN), providing a complementary determination of λ with different systematic uncertainties from prior cold neutron beam experiments. This dissertation describes analysis of the dataset collected by UCNA in 2010, with emphasis on detector response calibrations and systematics. The UCNA measurement is placed in the context of the most recent τn results and cold neutron A0 experiments.
