INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a chronic disease and a serious health problem that leads to increased prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and gallbladder disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of orlistat for weight loss and improved lipid profile compared to placebo in obese patients with hypercholesterolemia, treated over a period of 6 months. METHODOLOGY: In a 6-month, multicenter (10 centers in Portugal), double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled study, 166 patients, aged 18-65 years, body mass index (BMI) > or = 27 kg/m2, LDL cholesterol > 155 mg/dl, were randomized to a reduced calorie diet (600 kcal/day deficit) plus orlistat three times a day or placebo. Exclusion criteria included triglycerides > 400 mg/dl, severe cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, type 1 or 2 diabetes under pharmacological treatment, and gastrointestinal or pancreatic disease. RESULTS: The mean difference in weight from baseline was 5.9% (5.6 kg) in the orlistat group vs. 2.3% (2.2 kg) in the placebo group. In the orlistat group 49% of patients achieved 5-10% weight loss and 8.8% achieved > 10%. The orlistat group showed a significant reduction in total and LDL cholesterol, with similar changes for HDL in both treatment groups. The frequency of gastrointestinal adverse events was slightly higher in the orlistat group than in the placebo group, leading to discontinuation in 7 patients. CONCLUSION: Treatment with orlistat plus a reduced calorie diet for 6 months achieved significant reductions in weight, BMI and lipid parameters.

The propolis (bee glue) is a product rich in flavonoids, which are known for antioxidant activities, a protective action to the lipoproteins LDL-cholesterol against lipid peroxidation. Because they have antioxidant properties, we investigated the effect of the ethanolic extract propolis on the plasma level of cholesterol in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) submitted to hypercholesterolaemia. The animals were divided into 4 groups. G 1=received commercial feed and water, G 2=received enriched feed and water, G 3=received enriched feed and ethanol, G 4=received enriched feed and ethanolic extract of propolis. The hypercholesterolaemia was induced with commercial feed enriched with egg yolk. The animals received the ethanolic extract propolis at the concentration of 100 mg/kg daily. Weekly, after fast of 14 hours, the samples of blood were collected from the marginal vein of the ear. The plasma was used for the estimation total cholesterol. From the results obtained, we verified that the ethanolic extract propolis significantly reduced the plasma level cholesterol (109,59 mg/dL, p<0,05), compared to the animals treated with ethanol (331,38 mg/dL), and also to those receiving the commercial feed only, with cholesterol at 269,74 mg/dL.

Introduction: Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the first cause of death and third reason for hospital admissions in Brazil. The reduction of serum cholesterol levels reduces morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. The present study evaluated the efficacy and safety of atorvastatin in the treatment of Brazilian patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (types IIA and IIB dyslipidemias). Patients and methods: After a 4-week wash-out period, 152 patients were treated with atorvastatin at the initial dose of 10 mg/day. According to treatment efficacy within the first 8 weeks this dose could be increased to 20 mg/day. Treatment lasted for a total of 16 weeks, and its efficacy was evaluated by the reduction of serum levels of LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as by the propotion of patients that achieved the target levels recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program - Adult Treatment Panel II (NCEP ATP II) Results: The analysis of efficacy was conducted in 145 patients. Atorvastatin led to significant reductions in the levels of LDL-cholesterol after 8 and 16 weeks of treatment (P<0.001 for both comparisons). The relative reduction of such levels was 38% (P<0.001 after 8 and 16 weeks). Atorvastatin also led to significant reductions of total cholesterol and triglycerides. At the end of the study, 81% of patients achieved the target LDL-cholesterol levels recommended by NCEP ATP II. Treatment was well tolerated, and was interrupted due to creatine phosphokinase elevation in only one patient. Conclusion: Atorvastatina is efficacious and safe in the treatment of patients with primary hypercholesteromia. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora. Todos os direitos reservados.

The use of plants to treat diseases or even to cure them is a high diffused popular tradition, and several studies discuss the therapeutic and pharmacological properties of garlic in the reduction of hyperlipidaemias. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of the aqueous extract of garlic (Allium sativum) to treat the serum cholesterol of rabbits with experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided into G1 (control group) and G2 (group treated with garlic). The experiment was developed according to 3 phases: during the 1st phase, all animals were provided with a regular diet to evaluate the basal cholesterol; during the 2nd phase, all animals received a supplemented diet until the end of the experiment, in order to develop hypercholesterolemia and, in the 3rd phase, the animals on G2 received the garlic treatment. The cholesterol registered on the 1st phase was 39.94 ± 9.57 mg dL-1. On the 2nd phase, there was an increase on the serum cholesterol level in both groups - higher than 100 mg dL-1. Concerning the treatment, the garlic did not reduce the serum cholesterol in rabbits.

Prophylactic or therapeutic treatments administered with medicinal plants and natural products are used in popular medicine of diverse people since prehistoric times to the present days. Species with medicinal properties are increasingly studied in an attempt to understand their possible effects on organisms and their functioning. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the mushroom Agaricus blazei (aqueous extract) in rabbits subjected to experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided into two groups (control and treated with the mushroom) whose experimental protocol was divided into three phases: Phase 1, the animals were fed a normal diet to evaluate the physiological level of cholesterol; phase 2, the animals were fed a supplemented diet to induce hypercholesterolemia and in phase 3, the animals of control group continued to take high-cholesterol diet and the animals of treated group high-cholesterol diet including treatment with the mushroom. Weekly, after fasting of 14 hours, blood samples were collected from the animals and its plasma was stored for later measurement of plasmatic cholesterol. In the first phase, the cholesterol level was, on average, 31,30 7,34 mgdL-1. In the second phase, there was a significant increase (p<0,05) in cholesterol level of both groups. During the last phase of the experiment, the mushrooms didn’t cause reduction in plasmatic cholesterol of treated rabbits, however, prevent disease progression, maintaining the cholesterol level established at the beginning of treatment, whereas, in the control group, total serum cholesterol increased significantly at this stage
