The ingress of water into poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), PHEMA, loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin B-12 or aspirin, was studied at 37 degreesC using three-dimensional NMR imaging. PHEMA was loaded with 5 and 10 wt % of the drugs. From the imaging profiles, it was observed that incorporation of vitamin B-12 into PHEMA resulted in enhanced crack formation on sorption of water and the crack healing behind the diffusion front was slower than for PHEMA without added drug. This was accounted for by the anti-plasticization of PHEMA by vitamin B-12. Crack formation was inhibited in the P-HEMA-aspirin systems because of the plasticizing effect of the aspirin on the PHEMA matrix. All of the polymers were found to absorb water according to an underlying Fickian diffusion mechanism. For PHEMA loaded with 5 wt % of aspirin or vitamin B-12, the best values of the water diffusion coefficients were both found to be 1.3 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) at 37 degreesC, while the values for the polymer loaded with 10 wt % of the drugs were slightly higher, 1.5 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1).

The ingress of water and Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) into poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), and its co-polymers with tetrahydrofurduryl methacrylate (THFMA), loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin 1312 or aspirin, was studied by mass uptake over the temperature range 298-318 K. The polymers were studied as cylinders and were loaded with either 5 wt% or 10 wt% of the drugs. From DSC studies it was observed that vitamin B-12 behaved as a physical cross-linker restricting chain segmental mobility, and so had a small anti-plasticisation effect on PHEMA and the co-polymers rich in HEMA, but almost no effect on the T-g of co-polymers rich in THFMA. On the other hand, aspirin exhibited a plasticising effect on PHEMA and the copolymers. All of the polymers were found to absorb water and SBF according to a Fickian diffusion mechanism. The polymers were all found to swell to a greater extent in SBF than in water, which was attributed to the presence of Tris buffer in the SBF. The sorptions of the two penetrants were found to follow Fickian kinetics in all cases and the diffusion coefficients at 310 K for SBF were found to be smaller than those for water, except for the polymers containing aspirin where the diffusion coefficients were higher than for the other systems. For example, for sorption into PHEMA the diffusion coefficient for water was 1.41 X 10(-11) m(2)/s and for SBF was 0.79 x 10-11 m(2)/s, but in the presence of 5 wt% aspirin the corresponding values were 1.27 x 10(-1)1 m(2)/s and 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively. The corresponding values for PHEMA loaded with 5 wt% B-12 were 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s and 0.74 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively.

Las organizaciones asumen en el mundo en el que vivimos el reto de transformarse permanentemente para evolucionar y prolongarse en el tiempo, y una alternativa es a través de actividades dirigidas hacia los distintos grupos de interés y hacia la propia organización. Es asÃ, como surge el interés de realizar este estudio analizando la estrategia, desde los conceptos de algunos pensadores representativos, las tipologÃas y modelos existentes, asà como el concepto de organizaciones saludables, las cuales a través de prácticas saludables logran llevar a cabo acciones dirigidas hacia el bienestar de los empleados, el medio ambiente, proveedores, compradores, y la comunidad. Con el propósito de establecer la relación existente entre las prácticas saludables y la estrategia empresarial, se tienen en cuenta algunos estudios académicos y empÃricos relacionados con la aplicación de las prácticas saludables para contribuir a la estrategia de la organización. Para estudiar dicha relación, se llevó a cabo un trabajo de campo en una empresa de salud tomando como muestra a 134 empleados de la organización. Los resultados arrojados señalan que tres de las cuatro prácticas saludables, a saber: plan de desarrollo, empleados, medio ambiente, no poseen una relación significativa con la estrategia, siendo la práctica referente a la comunidad, proveedores y compradores la más relacionada con ésta. Resulta importante continuar con otras investigaciones acerca del tema, con el fin de seguir analizando cómo las prácticas saludables están o no relacionadas con la estrategia de la organización.

Desde el año 360 a.C. se comienza a hablar de la importancia de la estrategia para el éxito de las empresas, argumentando que a través de ella, se establece una visión y un método para alcanzarla. Sin embargo, desde los años ochenta el tema de cultura organizacional empieza a surgir como un elemento clave dentro de las compañÃas. El talento humano pasa a tener importancia dentro del panorama organizacional como un recurso valioso, cuya gestión puede resultar convirtiéndose en una ventaja competitiva para las compañÃas dentro de su sector de mercado. A pesar de que estos conceptos son subjetivos, al revisar las diferentes opiniones de autores representativos en cada uno de estos temas, se determina que se encuentran elementos en común entre ellos. Para el caso de cultura organizacional, son la identidad y diferenciación, los sistemas simbólicos, y los comportamientos uniformes. Para el caso de la estrategia, dichos elementos son el dinamismo, la asignación de recursos, y el patrón con propósito a largo plazo. Si tanto la estrategia como la cultura organizacional, independientemente aportan al progreso de las compañÃas, se buscó establecer, a partir de la fijación de los elementos mencionados, una definición de la relación entre ellos. Para lograrlo, se utilizó un ejemplo especÃfico, el caso de la empresa Google Inc. Se discutieron tres estrategias que esta compañÃa ha desarrollado en materia relacionada con la construcción de su propia cultura organizacional.

It is common practice to freeze dry probiotic bacteria to improve their shelf life. However, the freeze drying process itself can be detrimental to their viability. The viability of probiotics could be maintained if they are administered within a microbially produced biodegradable polymer - poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) - matrix. Although the antifreeze activity of γ-PGA is well known, it has not been used for maintaining the viability of probiotic bacteria during freeze drying. The aim of this study was to test the effect of γ-PGA (produced by B. subtilis natto ATCC 15245) on the viability of probiotic bacteria during freeze drying and to test the toxigenic potential of B. subtilis natto. 10% γ-PGA was found to protect Lactobacillus paracasei significantly better than 10% sucrose, whereas it showed comparable cryoprotectant activity to sucrose when it was used to protect Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum. Although γ-PGA is known to be non-toxic, it is crucial to ascertain the toxigenic potential of its source, B. subtilis natto. Presence of six genes that are known to encode for toxins were investigated: three component hemolysin (hbl D/A), three component non-haemolytic enterotoxin (nheB), B. cereus enterotoxin T (bceT), enterotoxin FM (entFM), sphingomyelinase (sph) and phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase (piplc). From our investigations, none of these six genes were present in B. subtilis natto. Moreover, haemolytic and lecithinase activities were found to be absent. Our work contributes a biodegradable polymer from a non-toxic source for the cryoprotection of probiotic bacteria, thus improving their survival during the manufacturing process.
