The present study was undertaken to prepare nanosilica by a simple cost effective means and to use it as a potential nanomodifier in thermoplastic matrices and to develop useful composites. Nanosilica was prepared from sodium silicate and dilute hydrochloric acid by polymer induced crystallization technique under controlled conditions. The silica surface was modified by silane coupling agent to decrease the agglomeration and thus to increase the reinforcement with polymer. The pristine nanosilica and modified nanosilica were used to make nano-micro hybrid composites. Short glass fibres and nylon fibres were used as microfillers. The hybrid nanocomposites based on Polypropylene (PP) and High density poly ethylene (HOPE) are prepared. The mechanical, thermal, crystallization and dynamic mechanical properties of the composites are evaluated.

In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The toughness of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/glass-bead blends containing various glass-bead contents as a function of temperature was studied. The toughness of the blends was determined from the notch Izod impact test. A sharp brittle-ductile transition was observed in impact strength-interparticle distance (ID) curves at various temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition of HDPE/glass-bead blends occurred either with reduced ID or with increased temperature. The results indicated that the brittle-ductile-transition temperature dropped markedly with increasing glass-bead content. Moreover, the correlation between the critical interparticle distance (ID.) and temperature was obtained. Similar to the ID, of polymer blends with elastomers, the ID, nonlinearly increased with increasing temperature. However, this was the first observation of the variation of the ID, with temperature for polymer blends with rigid particles. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym. Sci Part B: Polym. Upgrading two widely used standard plastics, polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE), and generating a variety of useful engineering materials based on these blends have been the main objective of this study. Upgradation was effected by using nanomodifiers and/or fibrous modifiers. PP and HDPE were selected for modification due to their attractive inherent properties and wide spectrum of use. Blending is the engineered method of producing new materials with tailor made properties. It has the advantages of both the materials. PP has high tensile and flexural strength and the HDPE acts as an impact modifier in the resultant blend. Hence an optimized blend of PP and HDPE was selected as the matrix material for upgradation. Nanokaolinite clay and E-glass fibre were chosen for modifying PP/HDPE blend. As the first stage of the work, the mechanical, thermal, morphological, rheological, dynamic mechanical and crystallization characteristics of the polymer nanocomposites prepared with PP/HDPE blend and different surface modified nanokaolinite clay were analyzed. As the second stage of the work, the effect of simultaneous inclusion of nanokaolinite clay (both N100A and N100) and short glass fibres are investigated. The presence of nanofiller has increased the properties of hybrid composites to a greater extent than micro composites. As the last stage, micromechanical modeling of both nano and hybrid A composite is carried out to analyze the behavior of the composite under load bearing conditions. These theoretical analyses indicate that the polymer-nanoclay interfacial characteristics partially converge to a state of perfect interfacial bonding (Takayanagi model) with an iso-stress (Reuss IROM) response. In the case of hybrid composites the experimental data follows the trend of Halpin-Tsai model. This implies that matrix and filler experience varying amount of strain and interfacial adhesion between filler and matrix and also between the two fillers which play a vital role in determining the modulus of the hybrid composites.A significant observation from this study is that the requirement of higher fibre loading for efficient reinforcement of polymers can be substantially reduced by the presence of nanofiller together with much lower fibre content in the composite. Hybrid composites with both nanokaolinite clay and micron sized E-glass fibre as reinforcements in PP/HDPE matrix will generate a novel class of high performance, cost effective engineering material.

The present work reports the biocompatibility property of injection molded HDPE-HA-Al2O3 hybrid composites. In vitro cytocompatibility results reveal that osteogenic cell viability and bone mineralization are favorably supported in a statistically significant manner on HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 composite, in comparison to HDPE-40 wt.% HA or HDPE-40 wt.% Al2O3. The difference in cytocompatibility property is explained in terms of difference in substrate wettability/surface energy and importantly, both the cell proliferation at 7 days or bone mineralization at 21 days on HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 composite are either comparable or better than sintered HA. The progressive healing of cylindrical femoral bone defects in rabbit animal model was assessed by implantation experiments over 1, 4 and 12 weeks. Based on the histological analysis as well as histomorphometrical evaluation, a better efficacy of HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 over high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for bone regeneration and neobone formation at host bone-implant interface was established. Taken together, the present study unequivocally establishes that despite the presence of 20% Al2O3, HDPE-based hybrid composites are as biocompatible as HA in vitro or better than HDPE in vivo.

Glass beads were used to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE/glass-bead blends were prepared in a Brabender-like apparatus, and this was followed by press molding. Static tensile measurements showed that the modulus of the HDPE/glass-bead blends increased considerably with increasing glass-bead content, whereas the yield stress remained roughly unchanged at first and then decreased slowly with increasing glass-bead content. Izod impact tests at room temperature revealed that the impact strength changed very slowly with increasing glass-bead content up to a critical value; thereafter, it increased sharply with increasing glass-bead content. That is, the lzod impact strength of the blends underwent a sharp transition with increasing glass-bead content. It was calculated that the critical interparticle distance for the HDPE/glass-bead blends at room temperature (25degreesC) was 2.5 mum. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that the high impact strength of the HDPE/glass-bead blends resulted from the deformation of the HDPE matrix. Dynamic mechanical analyses and thermogravimetric measurements implied that the heat resistance and heat stability of the blends tended to increase considerably with increasing glass-bead content.

The compatibilization of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/polyisoprene (PI) blends with polyethylene/polyisoprene (PE/PI) ''thread-through'' copolymers was investigated. The proliferating structure of PE/PI with segments chemically identical to HDPE and PI, respectively, is different from that of graft copolymers. Studies showed that the dispersed domain size in the blends was significantly reduced and interfacial adhesion was improved by the compatibilization action of the copolymer. In the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, the crystallization peak of HDPE in the blends became broad with adding the copolymer and fractionated crystallization appeared in the HDPE/PI blend compatibilized with the copolymer at a weight ratio of 30/70 while it appeared in the blend without copolymer at a weight ratio of 20/80. DMA results showed that by adding the copolymer, both the glass transition temperature (T-g) of the PI component and the alpha-relaxation of HDPE shifted to lower temperature, demonstrating the enhanced penetration of the two components. Mechanical properties of the blends were improved, especially the elongation at break, by the presence of the copolymers. The characteristic yielding at the fractured surface of the blends compatibilized with the copolymer indicates the fractural behavior of the material changed from brittle to tough.

Melt-mixed high density polyethylene (HDPE)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites with 1–10 wt% MWCNTs were prepared by twin screw extrusion and compression moulded into sheet form. The compression moulded nanocomposites exhibit a 112% increase in modulus at a MWCNT loading of 4 wt%, and a low electrical percolation threshold of 1.9 wt%. Subsequently, uniaxial, sequential (seq-) biaxial and simultaneous (sim-) biaxial stretching of the virgin HDPE and nanocomposite sheets was conducted at different strain rates and stretching temperatures to investigate the processability of HDPE with the addition of nanotubes and the influence of deformation on the structure and final properties of nanocomposites. The results show that the processability of HDPE is improved under all the uniaxial and biaxial deformation conditions due to a strengthened strain hardening behaviour with the addition of MWCNTs. Extensional deformation is observed to disentangle nanotube agglomerates and the disentanglement degree is shown to depend on the stretching mode, strain rate and stretching temperatures applied. The disentanglement effectiveness is: uniaxial stretching < sim-biaxial stretching < seq-biaxial stretching, under the same deformation parameters. In sim-biaxial stretching, reducing the strain rate and stretching temperature can lead to more nanotube agglomerate breakup. Enhanced nanotube agglomerate disentanglement exhibits a positive effect on the mechanical properties and a negative effect on the electrical properties of the deformed nanocomposites. The ultimate stress of the composite containing 4 wt% MWCNTs increased by ∼492% after seq-biaxial stretching, while the resistivity increased by ∼1012 Ω cm.

A method for the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in recycled polyethylene terephthalate and high-density polyethylene using headspace sampling by solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection is presented. This method was used to evaluate the efficiency of cleaning processes for VOC removal from recycled PET. In addition, the method was also employed to evaluate the level of VOC contamination in multilayer packaging material containing recycled HDPE material. The optimisation of the extraction procedure for volatile compounds was performed and the best extraction conditions were found using a 75 mu m carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane (CAR-PDMS) fibre for 20 min at 60 degrees C. The validation parameters for the established method were linear range, linearity, sensitivity, precision (repeatability), accuracy (recovery) and detection and quantification limits. The results indicated that the method could easily be used in quality control for the production of recycled PET and HDPE. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pulse repetition rates and the number of laser pulses are among the most important parameters that do affect the analysis of solid materials by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, and the knowledge of their effects is of fundamental importance for suggesting analytical strategies when dealing with laser ablation processes of polymers. In this contribution, the influence of these parameters in the ablated mass and in the features of craters was evaluated in polypropylene and high density polyethylene plates containing pigment-based PbCrO4. Surface characterization and craters profile were carried out by perfilometry and scanning electron microscopy. Area, volume and profile of craters were obtained using Taylor Map software. A laser induced breakdown spectroscopy system consisted of a Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm, 5 ns) and an Echelle spectrometer equipped with ICCD detector were used. The evaluated operating conditions consisted of 10, 25 and 50 laser pulses at 1, 5 and 10 Hz, 250 mJ/pulse (85 J cm(-2)), 2 mu s delay time and 6 mu s integration time gate. Differences in the topographical features among craters of both polymers were observed. The decrease in the repetition rate resulted in irregular craters and formation of edges, especially in polypropylene sample. The differences in the topographical features and ablated masses were attributed to the influence of the degree of crystallinity, crystalline melting temperature and glass transition temperature in the ablation process of the high density polyethylene and polypropylene. It was also observed that the intensities of chromium and lead emission signals obtained at 10 Hz were two times higher than at 5 Hz by keeping the number of laser pulses constant. The Ramberg-Osgood type constitutive law for creep suggested by Iyengar2 has been verified on high-density polyethylene. The time functions are evaluated from the experimental data of Scheweiker and Sidebottom3. It is found that the creep behaviour of the above material can be represented by the Ramberg-Osgood type law.

Post-irradiation studies have been carried out to elucidate the effects of electron beam irradiation on the structural, optical, dielectric, and thermal properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) films. The experimental results showed that both the optical band gap and activation energy of HDPE films decreases with an increase in the doses of electron radiation. The electrical measurements showed that dielectric constant and the ac conductivity of HDPE increases with an increase in the dose of electron radiation. The thermal analysis carried out using DSC and TGA revealed that the melting temperature, degree of crystallinity, and thermal stability of the HDPE films increased, obviously, due to the predominant cross-linking reaction following high doses of electron irradiation.

The structural evolution of an ice-quenched high-density polyethylene (HDPE) subjected to uniaxial tensile deformation at elevated temperatures was examined as a function of the imposed strains by means of combined synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. The data show that when stretching an isotropic sample with the spherulitic structure, intralamellar slipping of crystalline blocks was activated at small deformations, followed by a stress-induced fragmentation and recrystallization process yielding lamellar crystallites with their normal parallel to the stretching direction. Stretching of an isothermally crystallized HDPE sample at 120 degrees C exhibited changes of the SAXS diagram with strain similar to that observed for quenched HDPE elongated at room temperature, implying that the thermal stability of the crystal blocks composing the lamellae is only dependent on the crystallization temperature.
