A phase diagram of the pseudo-ternary Aerosol OT (AOT) + n-butanol/n-heptane/water system, at a mass ratio of AOT/n-butanol = 2, is presented. Conductivity measurements showed that within the vast one-phase microemulsion region observed, the structural transition from water-in-oil to oil-in-water microemulsion occurs continuously without phase separation. This pseudo-ternary system was applied to the synthesis of carbon-supported Pt 70Fe30 nanoparticles, and it was found that nanoparticles prepared in microemulsions containing n-butanol have more Fe than those prepared in ternary microemulsions of AOT/n-heptane/water under similar conditions. It was verified that introducing n-butanol as a cosurfactant into the AOT/n-heptane/water system lead to complete reduction of the Fe ions that allowed obtaining alloyed PtFe nanoparticles with the desired composition, without the need of preparing functionalized surfactants and/or the use of inert atmosphere. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

[EN]In this work, the measurements of the isobaric vapor−liquid equilibrium (VLE) data at 101.32 kPa and the excess molar volumes (vE), obtained at 10 K intervals of temperature in the range (288.15 to 328.15) K, for four binary systems comprised of methyl or ethyl butanoate with two alkanes (heptane and nonane) are presented.

The volatile compounds of raw and extruded bovine rumen, extracted by dynamic headspace, were separated by gas chromatography and analyzed by GC-MS. Raw and extruded materials presented thirty-two volatile compounds. The following compounds were identified in raw bovine rumen: heptane, 1-heptene, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, toluene, hexanal, ethyl butyrate, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, heptanal, limonene, nonanal, dodecane, tridecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane and octadecane. The following compounds were identified in the extruded material: 1-heptene, 2,4-dimethylhexane, toluene, limonene, undecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane and nonadecane. Mass spectra of some unidentified compounds indicated the presence of hydrocarbons with branched chains or cyclic structure.

The tetraalcohol 2,3,5,6-endo,endo,endo,endo-tetrakis(hydroxymethyl]bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (tetol, 1) has been prepared and crystallises readily as the lithium(I) complex [Li(1)(2)]Cl, forming an oligomeric multi-chain structure in which pairs of alcohols from two crystallographically independent tetol molecules bind lithium ions tetrahedrally. However, formation of monomeric structures in solution is inferred from electrospray mass spectroscopy, which has also shown evidence of exchange of lithium ion in the complexed species by added alkaline earth ions. A surfactant-mediated solution route for the obtainment of nanosized rare-earth orthophosphates of different compositions (LaPO(4):Eu(3+), (Y,Gd)PO(4):Eu(3+),LaPO(4):Tm(3+), YPO(4):Tm(3+), and YbPO(4):Er(3+)) is presented, and the implications of the morphology control on the solids properties are discussed. The solids are prepared in water-in-heptane microemulsions, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 1-butanol as the surfactant and cosurfactant; the alteration of the starting microemulsion composition allows the obtainment of similar to 30 nm thick nanorods with variable length. The morphology and the structure of the solids were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy and through powder X-ray diffractometry; dynamic light scattering and thermal analyses were also performed. The obtained materials were also characterized through vibrational (FTIR) and luminescence spectroscopy (emission/excitation, luminescence lifetimes, chromaticity, and quantum efficiency), where the red, blue, and upconversion emissions of the prepared phosphors were evaluated.

The role of plasma proteins on the cellular uptake of lipophilic substrates has perplexed investigators for many years. We tested the hypothesis that an ionic interaction between the protein-ligand complex and hepatocyte surface may be responsible for supplying more ligand to the cell for uptake. The surface-charged groups on albumin were modified to yield proteins having a range of isoelectric points (ALB, ALBs, ALBm, ALBe had values of 4.8-5.0, 4.5-4.7, 3.0-3.5, 8.4-8.6, respectively). [H-3]-Palmitate uptake studies were performed with adult rat hepatocyte suspensions using similar unbound ligand fractions in the presence of the different binding proteins. Mass spectrometry, isoelectric focusing (pI), and heptane : water partitioning were used to determine protein molecular weight, pI, and protein-palmitate equilibrium binding constant, respectively. Hepatocyte [H-3]-palmitate clearance in the presence of ALBs and ALBm were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than ALB, whereas [H-3]-palmitate clearance in the presence of ALBe was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than ALB. The data were consistent with the notion that ionic interactions between extracellular protein-ligand complexes and the hepatocyte surface facilitate the uptake of long-chain fatty acids.

A análise de hidrocarbonetos por técnicas de ionização a pressão atmosférica ou ambiente continua a ser um desafio na espectrometria de massas. Normalmente, a ionização ocorre através de mecanismos de protonação e desprotonação. Para isso, as moléculas de interesse devem apresentar um grupo básico ou ácido que proporcionem a geração de íons [M+H]+ ou [M-H]-. Para superar essa limitação, um método analítico simples, fácil, rápido e poderoso foi desenvolvido com sucesso, adaptado a partir da literatura, para ionizar saturado e insaturado, linear, ramificado, e hidrocarbonetos cíclicos, bem como hidrocarbonetos poliaromáticos e heteroaromáticos presentes em frações de hidrocarbonetos e de misturas de parafina/petróleo bruto utilizando ionização química à pressão atmosférica (APCI), favorecido pela utilização de solventes alifáticos de cadeia curta em um espectrômetro de massas FT-ICR. Entre os reagentes alifáticos estudados, isoctano proporcionou os melhores resultados quando comparado com outros solventes. Além disso, foram estudados outros interferentes do processo de ionização, como concentração da solução injetada e misturas parafina/óleo, que influenciavam desde o perfil dos espectros até as principais classes de compostos identificados. O método torna possível a ionização de hidrocarbonetos pela produção de íons [M -H]+ sem ocorrência de fragmentação.

The effect of several desilication experimental parameters (base concentration, temperature and time) on the characteristics of MOR zeolite was studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR, chemical analysis, and FTIR (framework vibration region). The textural characterization was made by N-2 adsorption and the acidity was evaluated by pyridine adsorption followed by FTIR and by the catalytic model reaction of n-heptane cracking. The alkaline treatments promoted the Si extraction from the zeolite framework, without considerable loss of crystallinity and, as it was envisaged, an important increase of the mesoporous structure was attained. A linear correlation between the number of framework Si per unit cell. N-Si and the asymmetric stretching wavenumber, nu(i), was observed. The acidity characterization shows that the desilicated samples exhibit practically the same acid properties than the parent HMOR zeolite. The optimum desilication conditions were those used to obtain sample M/0.2/85/2, i.e., sample treated with 0.2 M NaOH solution at 85 degrees C for 2 h.

The bifunctional transformation of n-hexane was carried out over Pt/MCM-22 based catalysts. MCM-22 was synthesized and submitted to ion exchange with rare earth nitrate solutions of La, Nd and Yb, followed by Pt introduction. Three different methods were used to introduce about 1 wt% of Pt in the zeolite: ion exchange, incipient wetness impregnation and mechanical mixture with Pt/Al(2)O(3). The bifunctional catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and by the model reaction of toluene hydrogenation. These experiments showed that, in the ion exchanged sample, Pt is located both within the inner micropores and on the outer surface, whereas in the impregnated one, the metal is essentially located on the outer surface under the form of large particles. The presence of RE elements increases the hydrogenating activity of Pt/MCM-22 since the location of these species at the vicinity of metal particles causes modification on its electronic properties. Whatever the mode of Pt introduction, a fast initial decrease in conversion is observed for n-hexane transformation, followed by a plateau related to the occurrence of the catalytic transformations at the hemicages located at the outer surface of the crystals. The effect of rare earth elements on the hydrogenating function leads to a lower selectivity in dibranched isomers and increased amounts of light products.

In embedded systems, the timing behaviour of the control mechanisms are sometimes of critical importance for the operational safety. These high criticality systems require strict compliance with the offline predicted task execution time. The execution of a task when subject to preemption may vary significantly in comparison to its non-preemptive execution. Hence, when preemptive scheduling is required to operate the workload, preemption delay estimation is of paramount importance. In this paper a preemption delay estimation method for floating non-preemptive scheduling policies is presented. This work builds on [1], extending the model and optimising it considerably. The preemption delay function is subject to a major tightness improvement, considering the WCET analysis context. Moreover more information is provided as well in the form of an extrinsic cache misses function, which enables the method to provide a solution in situations where the non-preemptive regions sizes are small. Finally experimental results from the implementation of the proposed solutions in Heptane are provided for real benchmarks which validate the significance of this work.

The acetohydroxamic acid synthesis reaction was studied using whole cells, cell-free extract and purified amidase from the strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa L10 and A13 entrapped in a reverse micelles system composed of cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide. The specific activity of amidase, yield of synthesis and storage stability were determined for the reversed micellar system as well as for free amidase in conventional buffer medium. The results have revealed that amidase solutions in the reverse micelles system exhibited a substantial increase in specific activity, yield of synthesis and storage stability. In fact, whole cells from P. aeruginosa L10 and AI3 in reverse micellar medium revealed an increase in specific activity of 9.3- and 13.9-fold, respectively, relatively to the buffer medium. Yields of approximately 92% and 66% of acetohydroxamic acid synthesis were obtained for encapsulated cell free extract from P. aeruginosa L10 and A13, respectively. On the other hand, the half-life values obtained for the amidase solutions encapsulated in reverse micelles were overall higher than that obtained for the free amidase solution in buffer medium. Half-life values obtained for encapsulated purified amidase from P. aeruginosa strain L10 and encapsulated cell-free extract from P. aeruginosa strain AI3 were of 17.0 and 26.0 days, respectively. As far as the different sources biocatalyst are concerned, the data presented in this work has revealed that the best results, in both storage stability and biocatalytic efficiency, were obtained when encapsulated cell-free extract from P. aeruginosa strain AI3 at 14/0 of 10 were used. Conformational changes occurring upon encapsulation of both strains enzymes in reverse micelles of TAB in heptane/octanol were additionally identified by FTIR spectroscopy which clarified the biocatalysts performances.

A rotary thermal diffusion column with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder static was used to separate n-heptane-benzene mixtures at different speeds of rotation. The results show that the column efficiency depends on the speed of rotation. For the optimum speed the increase in efficiency relative to the static column was of the order of 8%. The role of the geometric irregularities in the annulus width on performance of the rotary column is also discussed.

We used a hemolytic plaque assay for insulin to determine whether the same pancreatic B cells respond to D-glucose, 2-amino-bicyclo[2,2,1]heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH) and the association of this nonmetabolized analogue of L-leucine with either the monomethyl ester of succinic acid (SME) or the dimethyl ester of L-glutamic acid (GME). During a 30-min incubation in the absence of D-glucose, BCH alone (5 mM) had no effect on insulin release. In contrast, the combination of BCH with either SME (10 mM) or GME (3 mM) stimulated insulin release to the same extent observed in the sole presence of 16.7 mM D-glucose. The effects of BCH plus SME and BCH plus GME on both percentage of secreting B cells and total insulin output were little affected in the presence of D-glucose concentrations ranging from 0 to 16.7 mM. Varying the concentration of SME from 2 to 10 mM also did not influence these effects. In other experiments, the very same B cells were first exposed 45 min to 16.7 mM D-glucose, then incubated 45 min in the presence of only BCH and SME. Under these conditions, most (80.3 +/- 2.5%) of the cells contributing to insulin release did so during both incubation periods. Furthermore, virtually all cells responding to BCH and SME during the second incubation corresponded to cells also responsive to D-glucose during the first incubation. Similar observations were made when the sequence of the two incubations was reversed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
