A designed peptide amphiphile C16-KKFFVLK self-assembles into nanotubes and helical ribbons in aqueous solution at room temperature. A remarkable unwinding transition, leading to twisted tapes, is observed on heating. Nanotubes and ribbons re-form on cooling.

A micellar nanocontainer delivery and release system is designed on the basis of a peptide-polymer conjugate. The hybrid molecules self-assemble into micelles comprising a modified amyloid peptide core surrounded by a PEG corona. The modified amyloid peptide previously studied in our group forms helical ribbons based on a beta-sheet motif and contains beta-amino acids that are excluded from the beta-sheet structure, thus being potentially useful as fibrillization inhibitors. In the model peptide-PEG hybrid system studied, enzymatic degradation using alpha-chymotrypsin leads to selective cleavage close to the PEG-peptide linkage, break up of the micelles, and release of peptides in unassociated form. The release of monomeric peptide is useful because aggregation of the released peptide into beta-sheet amyloid fibrils is not observed. This concept has considerable potential in the targeted delivery of peptides for therapeutic applications.

The enzymatic cleavage of a peptide amphiphile (PA) is investigated. The self-assembly of the cleaved products is distinct from that of the PA substrate. The PA C16-KKFFVLK is cleaved by α-chymotrypsin at two sites leading to products C16-KKF with FVLK and C16-KKFF with VLK. The PA C16-KKFFVLK forms nanotubes and helical ribbons at room temperature. Both PAs C16-KKF and C16-KKFF corresponding to cleavage products instead self-assemble into 5-6 nm diameter spherical micelles, while peptides FVLK and VLK do not adopt well-defined aggregate structures. The secondary structures of the PAs and peptides are examined by FTIR and circular dichroism spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Only C16-KKFFVLK shows substantial β-sheet secondary structure, consistent with its self-assembly into extended aggregates, based on PA layers containing hydrogen-bonded peptide headgroups. This PA also exhibits a thermoreversible transition to twisted tapes on heating.

Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of the polar lipids Quil A, cholesterol (Chol) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in aqueous mixtures prepared by the lipid film hydration method (where dried lipid film of phospholipids and cholesterol are hydrated by an aqueous solution of Quil A) were investigated in terms of the types of particulate structures formed therein. Negative staining transmission electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy were used to characterize the colloidal and coarse dispersed particles present in the systems. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were established for lipid mixtures hydrated in water and in Tris buffer (pH 7.4). The effect of equilibration time was also studied with respect to systems hydrated in water where the samples were stored for 2 months at 4degreesC. Depending on the mass ratio of Quil A, Chol and PC in the systems, various colloidal particles including ISCOM matrices, liposomes, ring-like micelles and worm-like micelles were observed. Other colloidal particles were also observed as minor structures in the presence of these predominant colloids including helices, layered structures and lamellae (hexagonal pattern of ring-like micelles). In terms of the conditions which appeared to promote the formation of ISCOM matrices, the area of the phase diagrams associated with systems containing these structures increased in the order: hydrated in water/short equilibration period < hydrated in buffer/short equilibration period < hydrated in water/prolonged equilibration period. ISCOM matrices appeared to form over time from samples, which initially contained a high concentration of ring-like micelles suggesting that these colloidal structures may be precursors to ISCOM matrix formation. Helices were also frequently found in samples containing ISCOM matrices as a minor colloidal structure. Equilibration time and presence of buffer salts also promoted the formation of liposomes in systems not containing Quil A. These parameters however, did not appear to significantly affect the occurrence and predominance of other structures present in the pseudo-binary systems containing Quil A. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of PC, Chol and Quil A are important to identify combinations which will produce different colloidal structures, particularly ISCOM matrices, by the method of lipid film hydration. Colloidal structures comprising these three components are readily prepared by hydration of dried lipid films and may have application in vaccine delivery where the functionality of ISCOMs has clearly been demonstrated. Amorphous samples with helical induced anisotropy show magnetization processes that can be controlled by applying a longitudinal magnetic field simultaneously with an alternating current flowing through the sample. By varying the current amplitude and the phase difference between current and applied field, a wide range of coercivity and susceptibility values can be achieved. This work shows that the apparent coercive field and the susceptibility can be controlled in amorphous ribbons with helical anisotropy. These characteristics make these samples very suitable for their application as sensor cores, magnetic amplifiers, variable reluctance transformer cores, etc

DNA-grafted supramolecular polymers (SPs) allow the programmed organization of DNA in a highly regular, one-dimensional array. Oligonucleotides are arranged along the edges of pyrene-based helical polymers. Addition of complementary oligonucleotides triggers the assembly of individual nanoribbons resulting in the development of extended supramolecular networks. Network formation is enabled by cooperative coaxial stacking interactions of terminal GC base pairs. The process is accompanied by structural changes in the pyrene polymer core that can be followed spectroscopically. Network formation is reversible, and disassembly into individual ribbons is realized either via thermal denaturation or by addition of a DNA separator strand.

Mixtures of Regioregular Poly(3-hexyl-thiophene) (rrP3HT) and multi wall carbon nanotubes have been investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy in Ultra High Vacuum. Carbon nanotubes covered by rrP3HT have been imaged and analyzed, providing a clear evidence that this polymer self assembles on the nanotube surface following geometrical constraints and adapting its equilibrium chain-to-chain distance. Largely spaced covered nanotubes have been analyzed to investigate the role played by nanotube chirality in the polymer wrapping, evidencing strong rrP3HT interactions along well defined directions.

In this paper we examine the combined azimuthal and axial shear of a compressible isotropic elastic circular cylindrical tube of finite extent, otherwise referred to as helical shear (which is an isochoric deformation). The equilibrium equations are formulated in terms of the principal stretches, and explicit necessary and sufficient conditions on the strain-energy function for the material to support this deformation are obtained and compared with those obtained previously for this problem. Several classes of strain-energy functions are derived and in some general cases complete solutions of the equilibrium equations are obtained. Existing results are recovered as special cases and some new results for the strain-energy functions derived are determined and discussed.

This article reports on the lowerature inductively coupled plasma-enabled synthesis of ultralong (up to several millimeters in length) SiO2 nanowires, which were otherwise impossible to synthesize without the presence of a plasma. Depending on the process conditions, the nanowires feature straight, helical, or branched morphologies. The nanowires are amorphous, with a near-stoichiometric elemental composition ([O] / [Si] =2.09) and are very uniform throughout their length. The role of the ionized gas environment is discussed and the growth mechanism is proposed. These nanowires are particularly promising for nanophotonic applications where long-distance and channelled light transmission and polarization control are required.

The formation of the helical morphology in monolayers and bilayers of chiral amphiphilic assemblies is believed to be driven at least partly by the interactions at the chiral centers of the amphiphiles. However, a detailed microscopic understanding of these interactions and their relation with the helix formation is still not clear. In this article a study of the molecular origin of the chirality-driven helix formation is presented by calculating, for the first time, the effective pair potential between a pair of chiral molecules. This effective potential depends on the relative sizes of the groups attached to the two chiral centers, on the orientation of the amphiphile molecules, and also on the distance between them. We find that for the mirror-image isomers (in the racemic modification) the minimum energy conformation is a nearly parallel alignment of the molecules. On the other hand, the same for a pair of molecules of one kind of enantiomer favors a tilt angle between them, thus leading to the formation of a helical morphology of the aggregate. The tilt angle is determined by the size of the groups attached to the chiral centers of the pair of molecules considered and in many cases predicted it to be close to 45 degrees. The present study, therefore, provides a molecular origin of the intrinsic bending force, suggested by Helfrich (J. Chem. Phys. 1986, 85, 1085-1087), to be responsible for the formation of helical structure. This effective potential may explain many of the existing experimental results, such as the size and the concentration dependence of the formation of helical morphology. It is further found that the elastic forces can significantly modify the pitch predicted by the chiral interactions alone and that the modified real pitch is close to the experimentally observed value. The present study is expected to provide a starting point for future microscopic studies.

This paper presents a motion control system for guidance of an underactuated Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) on a helical trajectory. The control strategy is developed using Port-Hamiltonian theory and interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control. Using energy routing, the trajectory of a virtual fully actuated plant is guided onto a vector field. A tracking controller is then used that commands the underactuated plant to follow the velocity of the virtual plant. An integral control is inserted between the two control layers, which adds robustness and disturbance rejection to the design.

Recently, reports have appeared which show structural variations in B-DNA and indicate deviations from a uniform helical structure. We report for the first time that these indications are also present in the B-form fibre diffraction patterns for the lithium salt of natural DNA. We have used an improved method of controlling the salt concentration in the fibres. Our results are based on the appearance and disappearance of meridional reflections on different layer lines depending upon the salt.
