Zeolite N, an EDI type framework structure with ideal chemical formula K12Al10Si10O40Cl2•5H2O, was produced from kaolin between 100oC and 200oC in a continuously stirred reactor using potassic and potassic+sodic liquors containing a range of anions. Reactions using liquors such as KOH, KOH + KX (where X = F, Cl, Br, I, NO3, NO2), K2X (where X=CO3), KOH + NaCl or NaOH + KCl were complete (>95% product) in less than two hours depending on the batch composition and temperature of reaction. With KOH and KCl in the reaction mixture and H2O/Al2O3~49, zeolite N was formed over a range of concentrations (1M < [KOH] < 18M) and reaction times (0.5h < t < 60h). At higher temperatures or higher KOH molarity, other potassic phases such as kalsilite or kaliophyllite formed. In general, temperature and KOH molarity defined the extent of zeolite N formation under these conditions. The introduction of sodic reagents to the starting mixture or use of one potassic reagent in the starting mixture reduced the stability field for zeolite N formation. Zeolite N was also formed using zeolite 4A as a source of Al and Si albeit for longer reaction times at a particular temperature when compared with kaolin as the source material.

Three novel polyoxometalate derivatives decorated by transition metal complexes have been hydrothermally synthesized. Compound 1 consists of [(PMo6Mo2V8O44)-Mo-VI-V-V-O-IV{CO (2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)}(4)](3+) polyoxocations and [(PMo4Mo4V8O44)-Mo-IV-V-V-O-IV{Co(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)}(2)](3-) polyoxoanions, which are both built on mixed-metal tetracapped [PMo8V8O44] subunits covalently bonded to four or two {Co(2,2'-bpy)(2)(H2O)}(2+), clusters via terminal oxo groups of the capping V atoms. Compound 2 is built on [(PMo8V6O42)-V-VI-O-IV{Cu-I(phen)}(2)](5-) clusters constructed from mixed-metal bicapped [(PMo8V6O42)-V-VI-O-IV](7-) subunits covalently bonded to two {Cu(phen)}(+) fragments in the similar way to 1. The structure of 3 is composed of [(PMo9Mo3O40)-Mo-VI-O-V](6-) units capped by two divalent Ni atoms via four bridging oxo groups.

The hydrothermal reactions of vanadium oxide starting materials with divalent transition metal cations in the presence of nitrogen donor chelating ligands yield the bimetallic cluster complexes with the formulae [{Cd(phen(2))(2)V4O12].5H(2)O (1) and [Ni(phen)(3)](2)[V4O12] . 17.5H(2)O (2). Crystal data: C48H52Cd2N8O22V4 (1), triclinic. P (1) over bar, a = 10.3366(10), b = 11.320(3), c = 13.268(3) Angstrom, alpha = 103.888(17)degrees, beta = 92.256(15)degrees, gamma = 107.444(14)degrees, Z = 1; C72H131N12Ni2O29.5V4 (2), triclinic. P (1) over bar, a = 12.305(3), b = 13.172(6), c = 15.133(4), alpha = 79.05(3)degrees, beta = 76.09(2)degrees, gamma = 74.66(3)degrees, Z = 1. Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.59degrees < theta < 26.02degrees and 2.01degrees < 0 < 25.01degrees using the omega-scan technique, respectively. The structure of 1 consists of a [V4O12](4-) cluster covalently attached to two {Cd(phen)(2)}(2+) fragments, in which the [V4O12](4-) cluster adopts a chair-like configuration. In the structure of 2, the [V4O12](4-) cluster is isolated. And the complex formed a layer structure via hydrogen bonds between the V4O12](4-) unit and crystallization water molecules.

Three new cage-like mixed-valent polyoxovanadates [Ni(1,10'-phen)(3)](2)[V10O26] 1, [Zn(2,2'-biPY)(3)](3)[V15O36Cl](.)3H(2)O (2) and [Co(2,2'-biPY)(3)](3)[V15O36Cl](.)3H(2)O (3) have been hydrothermally synthesized for the first time and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, EPR spectra, TG analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The polyoxoanion of I exhibits an interesting empty ellipsoidal [V-2(IV) V-8(V) O-26](4-) 'host' shell, while the oxo vanadium clusters of 2 and 3 possess a spherical [V-8(IV) V-7(V) O36Cl](6-) cage with a Cl- ion encapsulated. The structure-directing role of organic templates (1,10'-phen and 2,2'-bipy) on the formation of the polyoxoanion structures is discussed.

Three new metal-organic coordination polymers, [Cu(2,3-pydc)(bpp)]center dot 2.5H(2)O (1), [Zn(2,3-pydc)(bpp)]center dot 2.5H(2)O (2) and [Cd(2,3-pydc)(bpp)(H2O)]center dot 3H(2)O (3) (2,3-pydcH(2) = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, bpp 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane), have been synthesized at room temvperature. All complexes have metal ions serving as 4-connected nodes but represent two quite different structural motifs. Complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous, both of which feature 2D -> 3D parallel interpenetration. Each two-dimensional (2D) layer with (4, 4) topology is interlocked by two nearest neighbours, one above and one below, thus leading to an unusual 3D motif. Complex 3 has a non-interpenetrating 3D CdSO4 framework with cavities occupied by uncoordinated water molecules.

The reactions of freshly prepared Cu(OH)(2).xH(2)O and Cu(OH)(2-2y)(CO3)(y).zH(2)O precipitates with imidazole and adipic acid in CH3OH/H2O at pH = 5.4 yielded CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(2) 1 and CU(C3N2H4)(2)L 2, respectively. Complex 1 consists of ribbon-like polymeric chains (1)(infinity)[CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(4/2)], in which the octahedrally coordinated Cu atoms are doubly bridged by bis-monodentate hydrogen adipato ligands. The interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions are responsible for supramolecular assembly of the polymeric chains into open 3D frameworks and two-fold interpenetration of the resulting open frameworks completes the crystal structure of 1. Within complex 2, the Cu atoms are penta-coordinated to form CuN2O3 square pyramids and condensed into CU2N4O4 dimers, which are doubly bridged by twisted bis-monodentate adipato ligands into polymeric chains (1)(infinity)([CU(C3N2H4)(2)](2)L-4/2) with 4- and 18-membered rings progressing alternatively. The polymeric chains are assembled due to interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions. The thermal and magnetic behaviors of 1 and 2 is discussed.

There are many advantages to using a microwave as a source of heat in hydrothermal reactions. Because it is a quick and homogeneous way to crystallize ceramic powders, it was used in this work for the production of antiferroelectric sodium mobate (NaNbO3) in a cubic-like form and its intermediary phase, disodium diniobate hydrate (Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O), with a fiber morphology. The syntheses were carried out by treating niobic acid (Nb2O5 center dot nH(2)O) with NaOH. By changing the reaction time and the concentration of the reactants, particles with different structures and different morphologies could be obtained. The structural evolution of the products of this reaction was elucidated on the basis of the arrangement of the NbO6 octahedral units. Conclusive results were obtained with morphological and structural characterizations through XRD, TEM, MEV, and NMR and Raman spectroscopy. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Titanium dioxide nanocrystals are an important commercial product used primarily in white pigments and abrasives, however, more recently the anatase form of TiO2 has become a major component in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical devices. An important property of titanium dioxide nanocrystals for electrical applications is the degree of crystallinity. Numerous preparation methods exist for the production of highly crystalline TiO2 particles. The majority of these processes require long reaction times, high pressures and temperatures (450–1400 °C). Recently, hydrothermal treatment of colloidal TiO2 suspensions has been shown to produce quality crystalline products at low temperatures (<250 °C). In this paper we extend this idea utilising a direct microwave heating source. A comparison between convection and microwave hydrothermal treatment of colloidal TiO2 is presented. The resulting highly crystalline TiO2 colloids were characterised using Raman spectroscopy, XRD, TEM, and electron diffraction. The results show that the microwave treatment of colloidal TiO2 gives comparable increases in crystallinity with respect to normal hydrothermal treatments while requiring significantly less time and energy than the hydrothermal convection treatment.

A systematic study of four parameters within the alkaline hydrothermal treatment of three commercial titania powders—anatase, rutile, and Degussa P25—was made. These powders were treated with 5, 7.5, 9, and 10 M NaOH between 100 and 220 °C for 20 h. The effects of alkaline concentration, hydrothermal temperature, and precursor phase and crystallite size on the resultant nanostructure formation have been studied through X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. Through the correlation of these data, morphological phase diagrams were constructed for each commercial powder. Interpretation of the resultant morphological phase diagrams indicates that alkaline concentration and hydrothermal temperature affect nanostructure formation independently, where nanoribbon formation is significantly influenced by temperature for initial formation. The phase and crystallite size of the precursor also significantly influenced nanostructure formation, with rutile displaying a slower rate of precursor consumption compared with anatase. Small crystallite titania precursors formed nanostructures at reduced hydrothermal temperatures.
