The electrochemical and electrocatalytic behavior of a series of heteropolytungstate anions in which a tungsten atom in the well known Keggin structure has been replaced by an iron atom is described. All of the iron substituted ions exhibit a one electron reversible couple associated with the Fe3+ center and a pair of two electron waves attributed to electron addition and removal from the tungsten oxo framework. The pH and ionic strength effects upon the various electrochemical processes are discussed and interpreted in terms of a competition between protonation and ion pairing of the highly negatively charged ions.

The anions are efficient catalysts for the electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide. A catalytic mechanism involving a formally Fe(IV) intermediate is proposed. Pulse radiolysis experiments were employed to detect the intermediate and evaluate the rate constants for the reactions in which it is formed and decomposed. A chain mechanism for the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in which the Fe center shuttles between the +2, +3, and +4 oxidation states is proposed to explain the non-integral stoichiometry observed for the iron substituted polytungstate catalyzed electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide.

The anions are also efficient electrocatalyst for the electrochemical conversion of nitric oxide to ammonia. The catalyzed reduction does not produce hydroxylamine as an intermediate and appears to depend upon the ability of the multiply reduced heteropolytungstates to deliver several electrons to the bound NO group in a concerted step. A valuable feature of the heteropolytungstates is the ease at which the formal potentials of the several redox couples they exhibit may be shifted by changing the identity of the central heteroatom. Exploitation of this feature provided diagnostic information that was decisive in establishing the mechanism of electrocatalytic reduction.

The iron substituted heteropolytungstates are not degraded by repeated cycling between their oxidized and reduced states. They also show superior activity compared to their unsubstituted analogues, indicating that the Fe center acts as a binding site that facilitates inner-sphere electron transfer processes. The basic electrochemistry of several other transition metal substituted Keggin ions is also described.

Polyester thin films containing europium-substituted heteropolytungstate were obtained on quartz plate by the sol-gel method. The films exhibited the characteristic emission bands of the europium ion. The red to orange intensity ratio (R:O) of Eu3+ in the films increased as compared to the corresponding heteropolytungstate solids. The fluorescence lifetime of europium is shorter in the thin film than in the heteropolytungstate solid. The results indicated that the formation of europium-substituted heteropolytungstate/polyester thin film has great effect on the luminescence of europium- substituted heteropolytungstate.

The complexes of alpha,beta-K(a)H(b)XW(9)O(37)(InH2O)(3) . xH(2)O (X = Si, Ge; a+b = 7) were synthesized from their lacunary precursors alpha,beta-XW(9)O(34)(10-) (X = Si, Ge) and characterized by elemental analysis, W-183 NMR, IR and UV spectroscopy and polarography. W-183 NMR spectra of the title complexes consist of two lines with intensity ratio 2:1, as expected for the C-3 nu structure of trisubstituted A alpha- and A beta-Keggin anions.

A new polyoxotungstate complex [Na-2(H2O)(8)][Na-8(H2O)(20)][Cu(en)(2)][W12O42] center dot 3 H2O (1) (en = ethylenediamine) has been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and TG analysis, together with a single crystal X-ray diffraction study. In compound 1, the Cu(en)(2)(2+) complex cation links the [W12O42](12-) anions to form a I D chain, and the ID chains are further interconnected with Na-8(H2O)(20)(8+) and Na-2(H2O)(8)(2+) cations to construct a new 3D framework.

A new polyoxometalate derivative {PW9V3O40[Ag(2,2'-bipy)](2)[Ag-2(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2)} 1 has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-Ray analysis showed that both [Ag(2,2'-bipy)](+) and [Ag-2(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2+) units are supported on the alpha-Keggin polyoxoanion [PW9V3O40](6-) via the surface bridging oxygen atoms. 1 represents the first alpha-Keggin type polyoxoanion coordinated with four transition metal complex moieties, which further acts as a neutral molecular units for the construction of an interesting three-dimensional supramolecular framework.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by transition metals Mn, ZnW11 Mn (H2O) O-39(8-) was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of these polyoxometalates was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proves the uniform growth of the film. They exhibit some special electrochemical properties in the films, different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The effect of pH on the redox behavior of ZnW11Mn(H2O)O-39(8-) in the film was discussed in detail. The multilayer film electrodes have an excellent electrocatalytic response to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3-, and to the oxidation of ascorbic acid.

Firstly reported for Fe-containing transition metal substituted polyoxometalates was an unusual Fe-centered demetalation process induced by the reduction of ZnW11FeIII to ZnW11FeII which resulted in a new couple of Fe-relating redox waves at positive potentials. The electrochemical behavior of a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn), was investigated systematically and comparably in aqueous solutions by electrochemical and in situ UV-visible-near-IR spectroelectrochemical methods. These compounds exhibit not only successive reduction processes of the addenda atoms (W) in a negative potential range, but some of them also involve redox reactions originating from the substituted transition metals (M) such as the reduction of Fe-III and Cu-II at less negative potentials and the oxidation of Mn-II at a more positive potential. Some interesting results and phenomena, especially of the transition metals, were found for the first time. Moreover, possible reaction mechanisms are proposed based on the experimental results.

New complex K5O4Na4H5 [Sn-3(PW9O34)(2)]. 16N(2)O was prepared and its structure was determined by elemental analysis, IR, P-31, W-183 NMR, polarography, XPS and X-ray crystallography. The anion has A-alpha-Keggin structure. The new complex crystallize is the monoclinic, P2(1)/n with a = 1.3625 (3) nm, b = 2.3625 (5) nm, c = 2.9306 (6) nm, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 99.67 (3)degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V = 9.299 nm(3), Z = 4.

The possibility of the formation of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DODA) after the addition of cobalt(II)-substituted Dawson-type tungstodiphosphate anion (briefed as (H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-11) in the subphase has been explored. Marked modifications of the compression isotherms are observed when this anion is dissolved in the subphase, which demonstrates that the polyanions interact with the monolayers. LB films have been readily obtained from this system. The adsorption Fourier transform IR (FT IR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) have been used to investigate the morphological and molecular structure of the deposited film. The FT IR results showed the presence of the polyanion within the LB films, and the shift for its characteristic bands may be related to the presence of positively charged DODA. AFM measurement reveals that the LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618)-P-II are regularly and uniformly deposited on the substrate. XRD experiments prove that the lamellar structure of the LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-II is well-defined. The LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-II immobilized onto an indium-oxide (ITO) glass, in aqueous solutions of pH 2.0-5.0, show quite facile redox reactions even for multilayers. All the experiments carried out in the present study suggest that the new materials of heteropolyanions can be formed by LB techniques and beneficial physicochemical properties of heteropolyanions can be maintained/enhanced through molecular-level design. A new heteropolycomplex, K6H3[ZnW11O40Al] . 9.5H(2)O was prepared and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, UV spectroscopy, Al-27 NMR, electrochemistry and X-ray crystallography. The crystal of K6H3[ZnW11O40Al] . 9.5H(2)O is cubic, space group Fm-3m, with lattice constants a=b=c=2. 144 8(2) nm, V = 9.866(2) nm(3), Mo radiation, R = 0.057 8 for 497 independent data with [I>2 delta(I)]. The anion is of alpha-type Keggin structure with C-s symmetry.
