John Waldridge, The Leaven of the Ancients: Suhrawardi and the Heritage of the Greeks, SUNY Series in Islam (Albany: State University of New York Press, 1999). Pp. 323

In the Leaven of the Ancients, John Walbridge studies the appropriation of non–Peripatetic philosophical ideas by an anti–Aristotelian Islamic philosopher, Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi (d. 1191). He proposes a comprehensive explanation of the origin of Suhrawardi's philosophical system, a revival of the “wisdom of the Ancients” and its philosophical affiliations “grounded” in Greek philosophy (p. xiii). Walbridge attempts to uncover the reasons for Suhrawardi's rejection of the prevailing neo–Aristotelian synthesis in Islamic philosophy, Suhrawardi's knowledge and understanding of non–Aristotelian Greek philosophy, the ancient philosophers Suhrawardi was attempting to follow, the relationship between Suhrawardi's specific philosophical teachings (logic, ontology, physics, and metaphysics), and his understanding of non–Aristotelian ancient philosophy and the relationship between Suhrawardi's system and the major Greek philosophers, schools, and traditions—in particular the Presocratics, Plato, and the Stoics (p. 8). Projecte de recerca elaborat a partir d’una estada a l’Oriental Institute de la University of Oxford, Regne Unit, entre juliol i octubre de 2007. Durant l’estada s’ha analitzat la documentació demòtica datada del regnat d’Alexandre el Gran com a faraó d’Egipte (332-323 aC). El conjunt de fonts que examinat està constituït per sis papirs (actes notarials que recullen diversos tipus de contractes o acords entre dues parts), un òstrakon fragmentari i una sèrie d’esteles provinents de la Necròpolis d’Animals de Saqqara Nord, en concret de la Catacumba de les Mares d’Apis. Aquesta documentació és fonamental perquè permet extreure conclusions importants sobre diversos aspectes relacionats amb l’administració i la religiositat egípcies en els moments inicials de la dominació grega d'Egipte. Cadascun d’aquests documents ha estat traduït, analitzat en profunditat i degudament contextualitzat històricament. D’una banda, en l’àmbit de l’administració, he pogut constatar la continuïtat existent amb el període històric immediatament anterior, és a dir, amb la Segona Dominació Persa del país; mentre que de l'altra, des del punt de vista religiós, l’anàlisi d’aquestes fonts m’ha permès verificar l'existència de tota una sèrie de canvis substancials, estretament vinculats a la voluntat expressa de la nova elit dirigent d'origen grec de distanciar-se dels seus predecessors aquemènides i de marcar amb força l’obertura d’una nova era que es caracteritzarà pel respecte a les tradicions autòctones i per la potenciació dels cultes nacionals.

Manual for Evaluation, Rehabilitation and Strengthening of Low Volume Bridges, HR-323, 1993

This report contains an evaluation and design manual for strengthening and replacing low volume steel stringer and timber stringer bridges. An advisory panel consisting of county and municipal engineers provided direction for the development of the manual. NBI bridge data, along with results from questionnaires sent to county and municipal engineers were used to formulate the manual. Types of structures shown to have the greatest need for cost-effective strengthening methods are steel stringer and timber stringer bridges. Procedures for strengthening these two types of structures have been developed. Various types of replacement bridges have also been included so that the most cost effective solution for a deficient bridge may be obtained. The key results of this study is an extensive compilation, which can be used by county engineers, of the most effective techniques for strengthening deficient existing bridges. The replacement bridge types included have been used in numerous low volume applications in surrounding states, as well as in Iowa. An economic analysis for determining the cost-effectiveness of the various strengthening methods and replacement bridges is also an important part of the manual. Microcomputer spreadsheet software for several of the strengthening methods, types of replacement bridges and for the economic analysis has been developed, documented and presented in the manual. So the manual, Chp. 3 of the final report, can be easily located, blue divider pages have been inserted to delineate the manual from the rest of the report.

Development of Evaluation, Rehabilitation, and Strengthening Concepts for Low Volume Bridges, Phase I Progress Report, HR-323, 1990

The primary objective of this project is to develop a design manual that would aid the county or municipal engineer in making structurally sound bridge strengthening or replacement decisions. The contents of this progress report are related only to Phase I of the study and deal primarily with defining the extent of the bridge problem in Iowa. In addition, the types of bridges to which the manual should be directed have been defined.

OHJAUSPALVELU H.323-SUOSITUKSEEN POHJAUTUVIIN MULTIMEDIANEUVOTTELUPALVELIMIIN

IP-verkko asettaa uusia vaatimuksia palveluntarjoajille multimedianeu-vottelupalvelujen toteuttamisessa. Samalla kuitenkin mahdollistuu myös ominaisuuksia, joita ei ole aikaisemmin voitu toteuttaa. Keskeinen elementti IP-pohjaisille on H.323-suosituk-seen pohjautuva MCU. Tässä työssä esitellään ja vertaillaan multimedianeuvottelupalveluissa ennen ja nykyään käytettyä tekniikkaa. Huomiota kiinnitetään myös neuvottelukulttuuriin ja multimedianeuvotteluissa tarvittaviin rooleihin. Työn käytännön osuudessa toteutettiin prototyyppi neuvottelupalvelusta, joka hyödyntää IP-maailman mahdollistamia uusia ominaisuuksia. Toteutuksen suunnitteluun, määrittelyyn ja dokumentointiin käytettiin UML-kieltä. Ohjelmointikielenä käytettiin Javaa.

ÄLYKKÄIDEN PALVELUJEN JA YHTEYSPALVELIMEN TOTEUTUS H.323-VIESTINTÄVERKKOON

Soneran IP-viestintäverkko on monipuolisia viestintäpalveluita asiakkaille tarjoava palvelualusta. Palveluihin kuuluvat ITU-T:n H.323-suosituksen mukaiset ääni- ja videopuhelut. Työssä toteutettiin viestintäverkkoon kokonaisuus, joka tarjoaa verkon käyttäjille puheluiden kytkennän ja reitityksen sekä useita älykkäitä palveluita. Kokonaisuus koostuu kahdesta komponentista. Puheluiden kytkemisen ja reitityksen sekä signaloinnin hoitaa H.323-suosituksen mukainen yhteyspalvelin Sonera Gatekeeper. Palvelujen toteuttamiseen tarvittavat tiedot säilytetään LDAP-hakemistossa. Työssä esitellään yleisimpiä suosituksia, joita käytetään äänen, videokuvan ja muun median siirtämiseen tietoverkoissa. Tarkimmin käsitellään H.323-suositusta ja muita työssä käytettyjä suosituksia. Lisäksi tarkastellaan työssä hyödynnettyjä ohjelmointirajapintoja ja vertaillaan toteutettua IP-pohjaista älykkäiden palvelujen toteutustapaa tavallisen puhelinverkon asiakkaille vastaavia palveluita tarjoavaan älyverkkoon. Lopuksi esitellään toteutettujen ohjelmistojen rakennetta.
