The flange technique, suggested by Reynolds72 is simple technique to improve antenna characteristics. Using flange technique we can trim the antenna characteristic by suitably adjusting the flange parameters75. Later corrugated flanges87 are used for beam shaping. The important parameters of the corrugated flanges are (a) flange angle, (b) flange width, (c) flange position, (d) conductivity of the flange, (e) amplitude excitation of the flange elements, (f) period of corrugation etc. Compared to a compound horn the flange technique offers great convenience in trimming antenna characteristics. Horns are commonly used as a feed in radar and satellite communications. A large number of work had been done to improve the characteristics of horn antennas. It is an established fact that grooved walls on the inner surface of a horn can improve the antenna characteristics44. Corrugated comb surface can be used for the circular polarization98, tilt of polarization99 etc. This suggests the possibility to combine these two phenomena and to obtain a resultant beam. This thesis presents the result of an investigation to study the possibility of controlling different antenna characteristics like polarization, beam shaping, matching etc, using corrugated flange techniques.

A modified H-plane sectoral horn antenna with identical E- and'H- plane.patterns over the X-band frequency is discussed. This system has significantly reduced side lobes and hack lobes. Half=power beam width and gain of the antenna are also improved with enhanced matching , Experimental results for a number of horns with various flanges are presented . These find practical application for illuminating symmetric antennas like paraboloids and polarization measurements in radio astronomy, etc. Compared to the fixed pyramidal horns. the present system offers great convenience in trimming the antenna characteristics

With the advent of satellite communication and radio astronomy, the need for large and efficient reflector antennas had triggered a widespread investigation in reflector feed design techniques. Major improvements sought are reduction in spill-over, cross polarization losses and the enhancement of aperture efficiency. The search for such a feed culminated in the corrugated horn. The main idea behind the present work is to use the H-plane sectoral horns fitted with, corrugated flanges as feeds of a paraboloid and see how the secondary pattern of the reflector antenna varies with different parameters of the feed. An offset paraboloid is used as the secondary reflector in order to avoid the adverse effect of aperture ‘blocking by the feed horn structure on the secondary radiation pattern. The measurements were repeated for three different H-plane sectoral horns with the same set of corrugated flanges at various X-band frequencies. The following parameters of the whole system are studied: (a) Beam shaping. (b) Gain. (c) Variation of VSWR and (d) Cross polarization

In the present thesis, possibility of beam shaping of sectoral horns and corner reflector systems'has been studied in detail. The experimental results obtained in the above two cases are compared. As far as the flanged sectoral horns are concerned, the special advantage is that the gain is increased without impairing impedance conditions. An intense study on corner reflector antennas shows that the been broadening or focussing will be possible by adjusting parameters involved. Beam tilting by imposing asymmetries is another interesting property of the systems. A comprehensive study of these fields has been presented in Chapter II. Chapter III is exclusively for describing the experimental techniques used in the present investigation. In Chapter IV, experimental results on flanged sectoral horns and corner reflector eyetses are presented. A comparative analysis of the experimental results obtained with flanged sectoral horns and corner reflector systems is presented in the Chapter V. The similarity and close resemblance in each aspects are shown by presenting typical results from these two eysteee. Theoretical aspects of both types of antennas are considered in Chapter VI. Attempts are made for co-ordinating the theoretical aspects and drawing a final conclusion. In Chapter VII. the final conclusion that the flanged sectoral horn may be considered as a corner reflector system has been drawn. The importance of the conclusions and usefulness are pointed out. The scope for further work in these lines has been indicated.

Investigations on the design and development of certain new hollow dielectric hom antennas of rectangular cross section have been carried out. The main shortcoming of the existing ordinary hollow dielectric hom antenna (HDH) is the abrupt discontinuity at the feed-end. A new launching technique using a dielectric rod is introduced to overcome this limitation. Also a strip loading technique is employed for further modification of the antenna. Radiation parameters of new I-IDH antennas of Eplane sectoral, H-plane sectoral and pyramidal types were studied and are found to be very attractive. Theoretical approach based on Marcatili’s principle and two aperture theory along with diffraction theory and image theory is used to support the experimental findings. The HDH is considered as solid horn of effective dielectric constant and the aperture field is evaluated. The antenna is excited by the open waveguide in the dominant TE1o mode and so the existence of any hybrid mode is mled-out. The theoretical results are observed to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

This paper is concerned with the surface profiles of a strip after rigid bodies with serrated (saw-teeth) surfaces indent the strip and are subsequently removed. Plane-strain conditions are assumed. This has application in roughness transfer of final metal forming process. The effects of the semi-angle of the teeth, the depth of indentation and the friction on the contact surface on the profile are considered.

Construction sector policy makers have the opportunity to create improvements and develop economic, social and environmental sustainability through supply chain economics. The idea of the supply chain concept to improve firm behaviour and industry performance is not new. However there has been limited application and little or no measurement to monitor successful implementation. Often purchasing policies have been developed with sound strategic procurement principles but even these have had limited penetration in to the processes and practices of infrastructure agencies. The research reported in this paper documents an action research study currently being undertaken in the Australian construction sector which aims to explore supply chain economic policy implementation for sectoral change by two government agencies. The theory which informs this study is the emerging area of construction supply chain economics. There are five stages to the project including; demand analysis, chain analysis, government agency organizational audit, supplier strategy and strategic alignment. The overall objective is towards the development of a Supplier Group Strategy Map for two public sector agencies. Two construction subsectors are examined in detail; construction and demolition waste and precast concrete. Both of these subsectors are critical to the economic and environmental sustainability performance of the construction sector and the community as a whole in the particular jurisdictions. The local and state government agencies who are at the core of the case studies rely individually on the performance of these sectors. The study is set within the context of a sound state purchasing policy that has however, had limited application by the two agencies. Partial results of the study are presented and early findings indicate that the standard risk versus expenditure procurement model does not capture the complexities of project, owner and government risk considerations. A new model is proposed in this paper, which incorporates the added dimension of time. The research results have numerous stakeholders; they will hold particular value for those interested in regional construction sector economics, government agencies who develop and implement policy and who have a large construction purchasing imprint and the players involved in the two subsectors. Even though this is a study in Australia it has widespread applicability as previous research indicates that procurement reform is of international significance and policy implementation is problematic.

One of the primary treatment goals of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery is to achieve maximum coronal plane correction while maintaining coronal balance. However maintaining or restoring sagittal plane spinal curvature has become increasingly important in maintaining the long-term health of the spine. Patients with AIS are characterised by pre-operative thoracic hypokyphosis, and it is generally agreed that operative treatment of thoracic idiopathic scoliosis should aim to restore thoracic kyphosis to normal values while maintaining lumbar lordosis and good overall sagittal balance. The aim of this study was to evaluate CT sagittal plane parameters, with particular emphasis on thoracolumbar junctional alignment, in patients with AIS who underwent Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Spinal Fusion and Instrumentation (VATS). This study concluded that video-assisted thoracoscopic spinal fusion and instrumentation reliably increases thoracic kyphosis while preserving junctional alignment and lumbar lordosis in thoracic AIS.

This paper presents a technique for tracking road edges in a panoramic image sequence. The major contribution is that instead of unwarping the image to find parallel lines representing the road edges, we choose to warp the parallel groundplane lines into the image plane of the equiangular panospheric camera. Updating the parameters of the line thus involves searching a very small number of pixels in the panoramic image, requiring considerably less computation than unwarping. Results using real-world images, including shadows, intersections and curves, are presented.
