The ability of metals to store or trap considerable amounts of energy, and thus exist in a non-equilibrium or metastable state, is very well known in metallurgy; however, such behaviour, which is intimately connected with the defect character of metals, has been largely ignored in noble metal surface electrochemistry. Techniques for generating unusually high energy surface states for gold, and the unusual voltammetric responses of such states, are outlined. The surprisingly high (and complex) electrocatalytic activity of gold in aqueous media is attributed to the presence of a range of such non-equilibrium states as the vital entities at active sites on conventional gold surfaces. The possible relevance of these ideas to account for the remarkable catalytic activity of oxide-supported gold microparticles is briefly outlined.

Metastable, active, or nonequilibrium states due to the presence of abnormal structures and various types of defects are well known in metallurgy. The role of such states at gold surfaces in neutral aqueous media (an important electrode system in the microsensor area) was explored using cyclic voltammetry. It was demonstrated that, as postulated in earlier work from this laboratory, there is a close relationship between premonolayer oxidation, multilayer hydrous oxide reduction and electrocatalytic behaviour in the case of this and other metal electrode systems. Some of the most active, and therefore most important, entities at surfaces (e.g., metal adatoms) are not readily imageable or detectable by high resolution surface microscopy techniques. Cyclic voltammetry, however, provides significant, though not highly specific, information about such species. The main conclusion is that further practical and theoretical work on active states of metal surfaces is highly desirable as their behaviour is not simple and is of major importance in many electrocatalytic processes.

Solid state reactive diffusion in binary Au-Sn system has been studied using the diffusion couple consisting of pure elements Au and Sn annealed in the temperature range of 180-100 degrees C for 25 h Interdiffusion zone consists of four intermetallic phases Au5Sn, AuSn, AuSn2, and AuSn4 Activation energy for parabolic growth constant and integrated diffusivity for each phase has been calculated to indicate about the possible mechanism for diffusion controlled growth process Parabolic growth constant of individual phases has also been compared Kirkendall marker plane position has been indicated in the interdiffusion zone and furthermore the ratio of intrinsic diffusivities of species has also been determined. The article presents a generalized analytical expression for description of the integral excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of a ternary system. Twelve constants of the equation are assessed by the least mean squares regressional analysis of the experimental integral excess data of the constituent binaries; three ternary parameters are evaluated by a regressional analysis based on the partial experimental data of a component of the ternary system. The assessed values of the ternary parameters describe the nature of the ternary interaction in the system. Activities and isoactivities of the components in the Ag-Au-Cu system at 1350 K are calculated and found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. This analytical treatment is particularly useful to ternary systems where the thermodynamic data are available from different sources.

Strategies for efficient start-up of a continuous process for biooxidation of refractory gold ore and concentrate obtained from Hutti, Gold Mines Limited (HGML), India are discussed in this work. The biooxidation of the concentrate at high pulp density (10%) with wild strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans isolated from HGML mines is characterized by significant lag phase (20 days) and incomplete oxidation (35%) even after prolonged operation (60 days). Two strategies, biooxidation with concentrate adapted cells and a step leaching strategy, in which the pulp density is progressively increased from 2% to 10% were considered and the latter resulted in efficient biooxidation of concentrate. Conversion of such a process from batch to continuous operation is shown to result in complete biooxidation of the concentrate and gold extraction efficiency in excess of 90%. Interdiffusion study is conducted in the Au-Cu system, which has complete solid solution in the higher temperature range and ordered phases in the lower temperature range. First experiments are conducted at higher temperatures, where atoms can diffuse randomly. Higher values of interdiffusion coefficients are found in the range of 40-50 at.% Cu. This trend is explained with the help of thermodynamic factor and possible concentration of vacancies. Following an experiment is conducted at 623 K (350 degrees C), where the ordered phases are grown. The interdiffusion coefficients at this temperature are compared after extrapolating the data calculated at higher temperatures.

Charcoal has been known for a considerable length of time to have the property of recovering gold, silver, and copper from cyanide solutions of these metals. Quantitative data that may shed light on the mechanism of the removal of these metals is very limited except that charcoal in a form known as activated has the power to abstract gold and silver in considerable quantities from the above solutions.

The Butte-Highland mine is situated at the head of Basin Creek, in the Highland mining district, Silver Bow County, about 14 miles south of Butte. The tunnel portal and present surface plant are at an elevation of about 7350 feet above sea level, facing westward across the head of Basin Creek valley. The "ghost" mining town of Highland lies a mile to the east, near the forks of Fish Creek. Access to the mine is obtained at present from Beaudine's siding, 12 miles west. The property may also be reached, with difficulty, over poor roads from Limekiln hill, or from Moose Creek.

From time immemorial man has used gold as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, as jewelry and for ornamentation. Placer gold has led directly or indirectly to the settlement of lands, California and Alaska being the two best known examples. It has led the way to the discovery of other important mineral wealth, the discovery of the copper and silver deposits at Butte, Montana and the discovery of the silver deposits at Cripple Creek, Colorado being two good examples.

Gold is widely distributed in the earth's crust in small quantities. Gold is found in nature in two forms; the element itself and the compound gold telluride. In all cases, silver in some proportion is an alloying constituent.

Gold is one of the rarer metals in nature, and chemically it is one of the most inactive. Gold forms stable, natural compounds with few other elements, and only with metals.
