This study examines the impact of a global sports event on gender representations in media reporting. Whereas previous research on gender, sport and media has been mainly concerned with sports events in the North American or Australian context, this study investigates the British media reporting before, during and after the London Olympics 2012. Our study follows the approach of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) and uses both quantitative and qualitative research procedures. The results reveal more balanced gender representations during the London Olympics in that the ‘regular’ biased associations were supressed in favour of positive references to female achievements. However, little carry-though of the ‘gains’ was noted. Also, this study shows that the positive associations intersected with national sentiments and were used to celebrate the nation-state. At the same time, some subtle resistance was observed to accepting as ‘truly’ British the non-white athletes and those not born in Britain.

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of child's gender on several dimensions-of paternity: the fathers' personal experience of paternity, their involvement in child rearing, and their representations. A total of 147 Swiss fathers of 18-month-old children (65 girls and 82 boys) relationship to the child or relationship with the child's completed questionnaires. The child's gender had little influence on paternal experience, mother. Globally, the fathers took on few responsibilities which were largely devolved to mothers. Fathers of boys were more involved in child care than fathers of girls. Finally, a discrepancy was found between the fathers representations of paternal roles in rearing girls and boys and the actual level of responsibility that fathers adopted in their relationship with their child.

The present study is concerned with exploring the linguistic identity construction of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the context of USA 2008 Democratic Party primaries. Thus, their speeches are examined in order to detect the aspects of identity that each politician resorted to in the process of projecting a political identity. The study, however, takes a special interest in the ways in which gender identity is projected by Obama and Clinton. Moreover, the notions of gender bias as well as gender representations are also investigated.

Objective: To review the scientific literature on pharmaceutical advertising aimed at health professionals in order to determine whether gender bias has decreased and the quality of information in pharmaceutical advertising has improved over time. Methods: We performed a content analysis of original articles dealing with medical drug promotion (1998-2008), according to quality criteria such as (a) the number, validity and accessibility of bibliographic references provided in pharmaceutical advertising and (b) the extent to which gender representations were consistent with the prevalence of the diseases. Databases: PUBMED, Medline, Scopus, Sociological Abstract, Eric and LILACS. Results: We reviewed 31 articles that analyzed advertising in medical journals from 1975-2005 and were published between 1998 and 2008. We found that the number of references used to support pharmaceutical advertising claims increased from 1975 but that 50% of these references were not valid. There was a tendency to depict men in paid productive roles, while women appeared inside the home or in non-occupational social contexts. Advertisements for psychotropic and cardiovascular drugs overrepresented women and men respectively. Conclusions: The use of bibliographic references increased between 1998 and 2008. However, representation of traditional male-female roles was similar in 1975 and 2005. Pharmaceutical advertisements may contribute to reinforcing the perception that certain diseases are associated with the most frequently portrayed sex.

Content analysis of media messages from a gender perspective has a long tradition. In the particular field of advertising, most of the researches have been focused on generic samples of advertisements or on the advertising traditionally associated to a masculine or a feminine audience. However, few authors have analyzed gender contents in food advertising, in spite of the close relationship between gender structures and the social processes of food purchase and preparation. Thus, gender representations in food advertising broadcast in Spanish television are analyzed in this article. The main results obtained show clear gender differences. For example, there is a clear predominance of masculine voices over and a more balanced situation regarding protagonists. Besides, feminine protagonists are more frequently located indoors, portrayed as attractive women and connected to advertising claims related to beauty or to the healthy qualities of the product.

Este e-working paper integra o debate acerca da diversidade de identidades de género a partir da análise das diferentes formas de representação visual dos corpos veiculadas em algumas das revistas de segmento masculino a circular em Portugal (Maxmen, FHM, Men’s Health e GQ). O trabalho começa por apresentar alguns dados indicativos do surgimento e evolução das vendas das revistas de segmento masculino em Portugal, bem como do perfil dos seus leitores. Posteriormente e a partir das imagens que integram estas publicações desenha-se, então, uma reflexão acerca das diferentes concepções de género associadas às revistas. This e-Working Paper incorporates a debate on the diversity of gender identities through the analysis of different ways of visually representing the body carried in some of the male magazines circulating in Portugal (Maxmen, FHM, Men’s Health and GQ). The work begins by presenting some data regarding the emergence and market evolution of male magazines in Portugal, as well as the reader’s profile. Therefore, through the diversity of images that integrate these publications, there will be a discussion on the different conceptions of gender.

As revistas de informação generalista configuram uma interseção entre as representações socioeconómicas, políticas e culturais e os quotidianos da população. Neste artigo apresentamos uma análise temática das revistas de informação generalista Sábado e Visão, as mais lidas do segmento em Portugal. O corpus de análise foi composto por 440 peças jornalísticas de 104 edições que correspondem a todos os números editados em 2011 por estas duas publicações. O estudo empírico, realizado com recurso ao software NVivo 10, revela uma transversalidade da abordagem aos temas político-económicos, espelho da conjuntura nacional e internacional no ano de 2011. As diferenças mais visíveis entre as duas revistas revelam uma maior opção pelos temas Sexualidades e Relações de Intimidade e Jet set na Sábado e Saúde, Lazer e bem-estar na Visão. Além disso, no que concerne às representações de género, presentes em vários temas, surgem na generalidade assentes num binarismo que transpõe o olhar da dimensão de género para o sexo biológico e que opõe as representações tradicionais da feminilidade e masculinidade, condicionando o surgimento de representações alternativas.

Women, subjectiveness, experimentations. This paper walks through gender, sexuality, body and subjectivity, bounding as the focus denaturalize the representations of womanlinessstaff and manliness and the modeled subjectivity by normative discusses that shows the transcendency based on multiplicities of experiences, wishes and life way wattled by men and women from the Caicó City s society in the decades from 1900 to 1945. For this, it was adopted a dialogic methodology inlcluding bibliographic and theorist references as well as sources like articles from Jornal das Moças (Lady s Journal); defloration s crime processes, abortion, infanticide and body lesions; iconographic sources and Caicó citizen memories in the period commented. Based on that sources, this work analyze the discursive construction of feminine through Justice and Jornal das Moças that paved by sanitarian, normalizing and moralizing discourses has spread clichés and stereotypes of womanlinessstaff and manliness, which has resulted by to universalize the experiences feminines in polarities and binary oppositions regarding to manliness, it has delineated them as asexual, irrational, anesthesiaed for pleasure and biologically meant to home activities modeling subjectivities that did not create ways for the singularization processes. This polarities, effects of sexual regulatory practices and gender legitimate the representations of courtship, maternity and honor, that although it has been incorporated not passivant on the building of the poor men and women subjectivity, it did not support itself in view of socio-cultural and economic reality of the poorest society side. Therefore, on this work emerge a plurality of women who has transited past the public sphere, who interlaced amorous informal relationships, who has kept relationships before the marriage, who hás established multiples familiar arrangements and helpful networks, who was single mothers without being considered dishonored women by social groups, who made matrimonial agreements without the rules of a formal civil marriage, who made use of beverageey to provoke the menstruation constituting multiples ways to experiment the life. This subjective feminine experimentations turned it possible to notice that representations concerning about the body, sexuality, date, maternity and honor of this women has constituted itself while molecularies and particulares . It was the affection not commented of the feminine sexuality that turned it possible to analyze the construction of singular subjectivities as a opened process, continuous, active, begetting new lands, life ways and wishes cartographies

O presente trabalho objetiva compreender as representações de gênero de jovens, identificando as significações sociais e entendendo subjetivamente seus posicionamentos imaginários sobre ser mulher. Foi utilizada a metodologia qualitativa e realizadas observação participante e entrevistas semi-dirigidas, para obtenção das informações. Foram entrevistadas seis jovens entre quatorze e dezoito anos, moradoras do bairro do Benguí, em Belém. Os resultados demonstraram que, na socialização primária, as jovens internalizaram valores patriarcais. Havendo, contudo, coexistência de significações patriarcais e igualitárias de gênero em suas representações. Estas últimas, internalizadas na socialização secundária com o grupo de amigos e integrantes do Jepiara/GMB. Contexto social potencializador de questionamentos às normativas patriarcais, mas também restritivo da mulher ao âmbito privado, dado às contingências sócio-econômicas. Trama de fatores subjetivos e sociais, na qual as jovens forjam-se mulheres, reproduzindo e elaborando singularmente discursos sociais adquiridos em suas trajetórias de vida. Esboçando autonomia em meio à heteronomia, que as constitui enquanto indivíduos.
