Clastic cells: Mineralized tissue resorption in health and disease

Clastic cells are responsible for mineralized tissue resorption. Bone resorbing cells are called osteo-clasts; however, they are able to resorb mineralized dental tissues or calcified cartilage and then they are called odontoclasts and chondroclasts, respectively. They derive from mononuclear precursors of the monocyte-macrophage lineage from hemopoietic tissue, reach target mineralized tissues and degrade them under many different physiologic or pathologic stimuli. Clastic cells play a key role in calcium homeostasis, and participate in skeletal growth, tooth movement, and other physiological and pathological events. They interact tightly with forming cells in bone and dental hard tissues; their unbalance may result in disturbed resorptive activity thus, causing local or systemic diseases. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. A apresentação das Saudades do Céu do Doutor Gaspar Frutuoso (1522-1591), por ocasião da sua edição pelo Instituto Cultural de Ponta Delgada, permitiu evocar alguns dados biográficos do mais antigo cronista dos Açores e, simultaneamente, colocar em destaque o carácter alegórico desta sua obra, que os autores, em geral, consideram ter ficado incompleta.

A diferència, però, d'altres conflictes anteriors (com ara l'anomenada guerra civil catalana de mitjan segle xv), aquests arguments antagònics conegueren (al Principat i fins i tot mes enllà) una difusió sense precedents; sobretot pel fet que s'expressaren tot sovint per la via impresa

Family functioning of elderly with depressive symptoms

Objective: To classify families of elderly with depressive symptoms regarding their functioning and to ascertain the presence of an association between these symptoms, family functioning and the characteristics of the elderly. Method: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study performed with 33 teams of the Family Health Strategy in Dourados, MS. The sample consisted of 374 elderly divided into two groups (with and without depressive symptoms). The instruments for data collection were a sociodemographic instrument, the GeriatricDepression Scale (15 items) and the Family Apgar. Results: An association was observed between depressive symptoms and family dysfunction, female gender, four or more people living together, and physical inactivity. Conclusion: The functional family may represent effective support for the elderly with depressive symptoms, because it offers a comfortable environment that ensures the well-being of its members. The dysfunctional family can barely provide necessary care for the elderly, which can exacerbate depressive symptoms.
