Installation Information requirements in the GPLv3 and LGPLv3

One of the major changes introduced in the GPLv3 and LGPLv3 is the clause preventing "tivoisation". Richard Stallman defines Tivoisation as "the practice of designing hardware so that a modified version cannot function properly". In this presentation we will go through the reasons of why the information installation requirement was introduced, how you can comply with this requirement and why you may want to think about it now rather than later.

Design and implementation of a testbed for data distribution management

Data Distribution Management (DDM) is a core part of High Level Architecture standard, as its goal is to optimize the resources used by simulation environments to exchange data. It has to filter and match the set of information generated during a simulation, so that each federate, that is a simulation entity, only receives the information it needs. It is important that this is done quickly and to the best in order to get better performances and avoiding the transmission of irrelevant data, otherwise network resources may saturate quickly. The main topic of this thesis is the implementation of a super partes DDM testbed. It evaluates the goodness of DDM approaches, of all kinds. In fact it supports both region and grid based approaches, and it may support other different methods still unknown too. It uses three factors to rank them: execution time, memory and distance from the optimal solution. A prearranged set of instances is already available, but we also allow the creation of instances with user-provided parameters. This is how this thesis is structured. We start introducing what DDM and HLA are and what do they do in details. Then in the first chapter we describe the state of the art, providing an overview of the most well known resolution approaches and the pseudocode of the most interesting ones. The third chapter describes how the testbed we implemented is structured. In the fourth chapter we expose and compare the results we got from the execution of four approaches we have implemented. In questa tesi verranno chiariti i concetti di open source e software libero e alcune nozioni utili a comprenderli. Verranno poi spiegate brevemente le licenze GPLv3 AGPLv3 e LGPLv3. Infine verrà spiegato come applicare la licenza GPLv3 al proprio programma, e verranno forniti alcuni consigli su come diffonderlo nel web.

Progettazione ed implementazione di un redattore di diagrammi E-R

La tesi analizza la problematica della mancanza di redattori di diagrammi E-R in grado di realizzare schemi relazionali basati sulla notazione di Chen e sulla notazione estesa. In particolare, dopo un'analisi di pregi e difetti sullo stato dell'arte dei principali strumenti già esistenti (in grado di realizzare diagrammi E-R con altre notazioni), si passa a descrivere nel dettaglio l'applicativo SharpER Diagram Editor, un progetto ex novo che consente la redazione di diagrammi E-R in notazione estesa. Vengono accuratamente descritte le varie fasi che hanno portato alla realizzazione del progetto, dall'analisi dei requisiti e la modellazione, all'implementazione e al test. Per finire vengono forniti interessanti spunti per poter proseguire il lavoro iniziato, il che è reso possibile dalla licenza con cui il software viene rilasciato ossia GPLv3.

PanDOI - Handle URI resolver

PanDOI works as Windows Desktop Gadget on Windows Vista and higher or as a Widget for OS X Dashboard. It resolves persistent identifiers like Digital Object Identifier (DOI), Handel (hdl), Uniform Resource Name (URN), and sRef IDs. It is possible to open a PANGAEA dataset by its ID, to show the latest PANGAEA datasets, and to search through PANGAEA. See further details for the manual of PanDOI.

PanXML - a tool to create XML files for DOI registration of publications in the catalog DataCite of the German National Library of Science and Technology

The software PanXML is a tool to create XML files needed for DOI registration at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). PanXML is distributed as freeware for the operating systems Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux. An XML file created by PanXML is based on the XSD file article-doi_v3.2.xsd. Further schemas may be added on request.

BSRN Toolbox V2.0 - a tool to create quality checked output files from BSRN datasets and station-to-archive files

The BSRN Toolbox is a software package supplied by the WRMC and is freely available to all station scientists and data users. The main features of the package include a download manager for Station- to-Archive files, a tool to convert files into human readable TAB-separated ASCII-tables (similar to those output by the PANGAEA database), and a tool to check data sets for violations of the "BSRN Global Network recommended QC tests, V2.0" quality criteria. The latter tool creates quality codes, one per measured value, indicating if the data are "physically possible," "extremely rare," or if "intercomparison limits are exceeded." In addition, auxiliary data such as solar zenith angle or global calculated from diffuse and direct can be output. All output from the QC tool can be visualized using PanPlot (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.816201).

Multibeam Converter - a tool to create Ocean Data View import files from multibeam files

The software Multibeam Converter is a tool to convert files or folders of files (ascii/tab-separated data files with or without metaheader), downloaded from PANGAEA via the search engine or the data warehouse to the ODV import format, e.g. for visualization or further processing. MultibeamConverter is distributed as freeware for the operating systems Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux.

PanPlot - software to visualize profiles and core logs

The program PanPlot was developed as a visualization tool for the information system PANGAEA. It can be used as a stand-alone application to plot data versus depth or time or in a ternary view. Data input format is tab-delimited ASCII (e.g. by export from MS-Excel or from PANGAEA). The default scales and graphic features can individualy be modified. PanPlot graphs can be exported in platform-specific interchange formats (EMF, PICT) which can be imported by graphic software for further processing.
