Soils at many locations that have their origin in volcanic parent material and have undergone extensive weathering often exhibit strong frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibilities. The presence of such susceptibility has a profound effect on electromagnetic induction data acquired in such environments. Their transient electromagnetic response is characterized by a t-1 decay that is strong enough to mask UXO responses. In a field study and associated laboratory work on characterizing the frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility and its influence on transient electromagnetic data, we collected soil samples on the surface and in soil pits from the Island of Kaho'olawe, Hawaii, and measured their frequency dependent magnetic susceptibilities. We present the details of the field investigation, confirm previous theoretical work with field and laboratory measurements, characterize the susceptibility with a Cole-Cole model, and investigate the response specific to the measured susceptibility.

Stochastic modelling is a useful way of simulating complex hard-rock aquifers as hydrological properties (permeability, porosity etc.) can be described using random variables with known statistics. However, very few studies have assessed the influence of topological uncertainty (i.e. the variability of thickness of conductive zones in the aquifer), probably because it is not easy to retrieve accurate statistics of the aquifer geometry, especially in hard rock context. In this paper, we assessed the potential of using geophysical surveys to describe the geometry of a hard rock-aquifer in a stochastic modelling framework. The study site was a small experimental watershed in South India, where the aquifer consisted of a clayey to loamy-sandy zone (regolith) underlain by a conductive fissured rock layer (protolith) and the unweathered gneiss (bedrock) at the bottom. The spatial variability of the thickness of the regolith and fissured layers was estimated by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) profiles, which were performed along a few cross sections in the watershed. For stochastic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, the generated random layer thickness was made conditional to the available data from the geophysics. In order to simulate steady state flow in the irregular domain with variable geometry, we used an isoparametric finite element method to discretize the flow equation over an unstructured grid with irregular hexahedral elements. The results indicated that the spatial variability of the layer thickness had a significant effect on reducing the simulated effective steady seepage flux and that using the conditional simulations reduced the uncertainty of the simulated seepage flux. As a conclusion, combining information on the aquifer geometry obtained from geophysical surveys with stochastic modelling is a promising methodology to improve the simulation of groundwater flow in complex hard-rock aquifers. Geophysics may assist scent dogs and divers in the search of water bodies for human and animal remains, contraband, weapons and explosives by surveying large areas rapidly and identifying targets or environmental hazards. The most commonly applied methods are described and evaluated for forensic searches. Seismic reflection or refraction and CHIRPS are useful for deep, openwater bodies and identifying large targets, yet limited in streams and ponds. The use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) onwater(WPR) is of limited use in deepwaters (over 20 m) but is advantageous in the search for non-metallic targets in small ditches and ponds. Largemetal or metal-bearing targets can be successfully imaged in deep waters by using towfish magnetometers: in shallow waters such a towfish cannot be used, so a non-metalliferous boat can carry a terrestrial magnetometer. Each device has its uses, depending on the target and location: unknown target make-up (e.g. a homicide victimwith or without a metal object) may be best located using a range ofmethods (the multi-proxy approach), depending on water depth. Geophysics may not definitively find the target, but can provide areas for elimination and detailed search by dogs and divers, saving time and effort.

In its 2002 Communication "Towards a Thematic Strategy on Soil Protection" (COM 2002, 179), the Commission identified the main threats to which soils in the EU are confronted. More recently, the EU published a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection (COM 2006, 231) as well as a proposal for a Soil Framework Directive (COM 2006, 232). The proposed directive, if implemented, will require states to identify a number of specific soil degradation processes that have occurred or are likely to occur in the near future. This project applies a number of recent geophysical developments, in addition to a range of traditional approaches, to a number of areas of Irish concern to Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection and the proposed Soil Framework Directive.
