The traditional operational and hazard control paradigm of an electrical installation has several issues pertaining to the diversity of equipment. A large maintenance inventory is a reason for concern for any manager, but the arc flash hazard is a particularly new phenomenon and the effects of equipment diversity on this phenomenon are even newer. The class of arc hazard can be increased, simply by changing the fuse link or circuit breaker manufacturer. Management pressure to operate as well as non-standard practices and installations are also partly responsible. The aim of this study is to take a typical situation in an industrial plant and to statistically simulate, by means of a dedicated software program, the fuse arc flash interruption performance of various manufacturers. The purpose of this study is to obtain a more objective indication of the influence of different fuse link manufacturers on arc flash incident energy. © 2011 IEEE.

Measurements of molecular weights, soluble fractions and examination of NMR spectra of bisphenol-A polysulfone, after gamma irradiation in vacuum at 150 degrees C were used to elucidate the mechanism of crosslinking. Excellent agreement was obtained between G(S) and G(X) determined from measurements above and below the gel dose when a Y-linking mechanism was assumed, whereas poor agreement was obtained when an H-link mechanism was assumed, which is the mechanism normally believed to be responsible for crosslinking. New resonances were observed in the C-13 NMX spectra of the irradiated polymer which were consistent with the formation of Y-links involving phenylene units in the backbone chain. Guinea pigs were exposed to pure tones of 10 kHz at intensities between 98 and 115 dB SPL for 5-30 min, to produce varying degrees of acoustic trauma. Changes in auditory thresholds were measured electrophysiologically, and the animals were immediately fixed for scanning electron microscopy. Correlation between morphological changes to the hair bundle and losses in threshold, showed that with the smallest degrees of trauma (98 dB SPL for 15 min, mean maximum threshold loss of 22 dB), damage was confined to a small stretch of inner hair cells (IHC), with only subtle changes to the stereocilia of the outer hair cells (OHC). At exposure intensities greater than 102 dB SPL (duration: 15 min) the IHC stereocilia in the centre of the lesion were always substantially disarrayed. Substantial damage to the OHC bundles was seen only with exposures above 110 dB SPL(duration: greater than or equal to 5 min), producing threshold losses of 50 dB or more. Tip links were lost only where the stereocilia were disarrayed. It is concluded that the tip links are not the most vulnerable components of the cochlear hair cell, but that relatively low levels of acoustic stimulation can cause significant damage to the stereociliary bundle of the IHCs.

Objective-Ras homolog gene family member A (RhoA)/Rho-kinase-mediated Ca(2+) sensitization is a critical component of constrictor responses. The present study investigates how angiotensin II activates RhoA. Methods and Results-Adenoviral vectors were used to manipulate the expression of regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) domain containing Rho-specific guanine exchange factors (RhoGEFs) and proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (PYK2), a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, in primary rat vascular smooth muscle cells. As an evidence of RhoA activation, RhoA translocation and MYPT1 (the regulatory subunit of myosin light chain phosphatase) phosphorylation were analyzed by Western blot. Results showed that overexpression of PDZ-RhoGEF, but not p115-RhoGEF or leukemia-associated RhoGEF (LARG), enhanced RhoA activation by angiotensin II. Knockdown of PDZ-RhoGEF decreased RhoA activation by angiotensin II. PDZ-RhoGEF was phosphorylated and activated by PYK2 in vitro, and knockdown of PDZ-RhoGEF reduced RhoA activation by constitutively active PYK2, indicating that PDZ-RhoGEF links PYK2 to RhoA. Knockdown of PYK2 or PDZ-RhoGEF markedly decreased RhoA activation by A23187, a Ca(2+) ionophore, demonstrating that PYK2/PDZ-RhoGEF couples RhoA activation to Ca(2+). Conclusions-PYK2 and PDZ-RhoGEF are necessary for angiotensin II-induced RhoA activation and for Ca(2+) signaling to RhoA. (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2009;29:1657-1663.)

Six polyesters were synthesised from 4,4 ' -oxy-bis(benzoyl chloride) and 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-, 2,3-, 2,6-, and 2,7-naphthalenediol isomers. The structures of the polyesters were characterised by means of IR, inherent viscosities in tetrachloroethane (TCE), solutions at 303 K and thermal analysis. The glass transition temperatures were in the range of 425-494 K by DSC thermal analysis. All of the polyesters were irradiated in an AECL Gammacell 220 unit at a dose rate of approximately 6.7 kGy/h to doses in the range of 0-15 kGy at 77 and 300 K. ESR spectroscopy was used to examine the radicals formed during radiolysis and to measure their yields. The G-values for radical formation in the polyesters were found to be in the range 0.18-1.41 at 77 K and 0.19-0.78 at 300 K. At 77 K, up to 15% of the radicals formed on radiolysis were found to be photo-bleachable anion radicals. Annealing experiments were carried out in order to identify the neutral radicals, which were assigned to naphthyl- or phenyl- and phenoxyl-type radicals. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. In Australian universities the discipline of Geography has been the pace-setter in forging cross-disciplinary links to create multidisciplinary departments and schools, well ahead of other disciplines in humanities, social sciences and sciences, and also to a greater extent than in comparable overseas university systems. Details on all cross-disciplinary links and on immediate outcomes have been obtained by surveys of all heads of departments/schools with undergraduate Geography programs. These programs have traced their own distinctive trajectories, with ramifying links to cognate fields of enquiry, achieved through mergers, transfers, internal initiatives and, more recently, faculty-wide restructuring to create supradisciplinary schools. Geography's `exceptionalism' has proved short-lived. Disciplinary flux is now extending more widely within Australian universities, driven by a variety of internal and external forces, including: intellectual questioning and new ways of constituting knowledge; technological change and the information revolution; the growth of instrumentalism and credentialism, and managerialism and entre-preneurial imperatives; reinforced by a powerful budgetary squeeze. Geographers are proving highly adaptive in pursuit of cross-disciplinary connections, offering analytical tools and selected disciplinary insights useful to non-geographers. However, this may be at cost to undergraduate programs focussing on Geography's intellectual core. Whereas formerly Geography had high reproductive capacity but low instrumental value it may now be in a phase of enhanced utility but perilously low reproductive capacity.

Issues concerning the influence of attachment characteristics on own and partner's disclosure were addressed using a sample of 113 couples in medium-term dating relationships. Individual differences in attachment were assessed in terms of relationship anxiety and avoidance. Disposition to disclose was assessed using questionnaire measures of self-disclosure, relationship-focused disclosure, and the ability to elicit disclosure from the partner; in addition, structured diaries were used to assess aspects of disclosure (amount, intimacy, emotional tone, and satisfaction) in the context of couples' everyday interactions. Couple-level analyses showed that avoidance strongly predicted dispositional measures of disclosure, whereas anxiety (particularly partner's anxiety) was related to negative evaluations of everyday interactions. Interactive effects of attachment dimensions and gender were also obtained, highlighting the complexity of communication behavior. The results are discussed in terms of the goals and strategies associated with working models of attachment.
