Alternative and clean energy generation research has been intensified in last decades. Among the alternatives, fuel cells are one of the most important. There are different types of fuel cells, among which stands out intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) matter of the present work. For application as cathode on this type of devices, the ceramic Ba0.5Sr0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ doped with rare earth ions (Nd, Sm) have been quite promising because they show good ionic conductivity and operate at relatively low temperatures (500 - 800°C). In this work, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ, (BaSr)0.5Sm0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ and (BaSr)0.5Nd0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ were obtained by modified Pechini method, making use of gelatin as polymerizing agent. The powders were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The perovskite phase was observed in all X-ray patterns for the materials Ba0.5Sr0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ doped with rare earth ions (Nd, Sm). The SEM images showed that the materials have a characteristics porous, with very uniform pore distribution, which are favorable for application as cathodes. Subsequently, screen-printed assymmetrical cells were studied by impedance spectroscopy, to assess the kinetics of the cathode for the reduction reaction of oxygen. The best resistance to the specific area was found for the cathode BSSCF sintered at 1050 °C for 4 hours with around 0.15 Ω.cm2 at 750 °C as well as cathodes BSNCF and BSCF obtained resistances specific area of 0.2 and 0.73 Ω.cm2, respectively, for the same conditions. The polarization curves showed similar behavior to the best cathodes BSSCF and BSNCF, such combination of properties indicates that the film potentially depict good performance as IT-SOFC cathodes

In this work Cu1.4Mn1.6O4 (CMO) spinel oxide is prepared and evaluated as a novel cobalt-free cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). Single phase CMO powder with cubic structure is identified using XRD. XPS results confirm that mixed Cu+/Cu2+ and Mn3+/Mn4+ couples exist in the CMO sample, and a maximum conductivity of 78 S cm−1 is achieved at 800 °C. Meanwhile, CMO oxide shows good thermal and chemical compatibility with a 10 mol% Sc2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (ScSZ) electrolyte material. Impedance spectroscopy measurements reveals that CMO exhibits a low polarization resistance of 0.143 Ω cm2 at 800 °C. Furthermore, a Ni-ScSZ/ScSZ/CMO single cell demonstrates a maximum power density of 1076 mW cm−2 at 800 °C under H2 (3% H2O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results indicate that Cu1.4Mn1.6O4 is a superior and promising cathode material for IT-SOFCs.

Black Pearls 2000 (designated as BP- 2000) and Vulcan XC-72 (designated as XC-72) carbon blacks were chosen as supports to prepare 40 wt % (the targeted value) Pt/C catalysts by a modified polyol process. The carbon blacks were characterized by N-2 adsorption and Fourier tranform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in situ cyclic voltammetry, and current-voltage curves. On BP- 2000, Pt nanoparticles were larger in size and more unevenly distributed than on XC-72. It was observed by SEM that the corresponding catalyst layer on BP- 2000 was thicker than that of XC-72 based catalyst at almost the identical catalyst loading. And the BP- 2000 supported catalyst gave a better single cell performance at high current densities. These results suggest that the performance improvement is due to the enhanced oxygen diffusion and water removal capability when BP- 2000 is used as cathode catalyst support. This work reports on the changes of performance of solid-state cells dye-sensitized solar cells with the variation of concentration of spiro-OMeTAD between 5% and 25% in the fabrication of the cell. Variations of charge recombination and capacitance correlate with the improvement of current-potential characteristics at increasing spiro-OMeTAD content, which is explained by reduction of transport resistance for hole transport, the increase of charge separation in the dye molecules, and importantly, with the increase of the β-factor in the recombination resistance, that causes a reduction of the diode ideality factor. © 2010 Materials Research Society.

In this work, the microstructure of mortars made with an ordinary Portland cement and slag cement has been studied. These mortars were exposed to four different constant temperature and relative humidity environments during a 180-day period. The microstructure has been studied using impedance spectroscopy, and mercury intrusion porosimetry as a contrast technique. The impedance spectroscopy parameters make it possible to analyze the evolution of the solid fraction formation for the studied mortars and their results are confirmed with those obtained using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The development of the pore network of mortars is affected by the environment. However, slag cement mortars are more influenced by temperature while the relative humidity has a greater influence on the OPC mortars. The results show that slag cement mortars hardened under non-optimal environments have a more refined microstructure than OPC mortars for the studied environmental conditions.

Electrochemical deposition of Ni-Pd alloy films of various compositions from bath solution containing ethylenediamine (EDA) was carried out to use as anode material for methanol oxidative fuel cell in H2SO4 medium. Electronic absorption spectrum of bath solution containing Ni2+ Pd2+ ions and EDA indicated the formation of a four coordinate square planar metal-ligand complex of both the metal ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the deposited alloy films show an increase in Pd-Ni alloy lattice parameter with increase in Pd content, and indicate the substitution of Pd in the lattice. A nano/ultrafine kind of crystal growth was observed in the alloy film deposited at low current density (2.5 mA cm(-2)). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies on the successively sputtered films showed the presence of Ni and Pd in pure metallic states and the surface concentration ratio of Ni to Pd is less than bulk indicating the segregation of Pd on the surface. Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol in H2SO4 medium is found to be promoted on Ni-Pd electrodeposits. The anodic peak current characteristics to oxidation reaction on Ni-Pd was found typically high when compared to pure nickel and the relative increase in surface area by alloying the Ni by Pd was found to be as much as 300 times. Sintering, electrical conductivity and thermal expansion behaviour of combustion synthesised strontium substituted rare earth manganites with the general formula Ln(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (Ln = Pr, Nd and Sm; x = 0, 0.16 and 0.25) have been investigated as solid oxide fuel cell cathode materials. The combustion derived rare earth manganites have surface area in the range of 13-40 m(2)/g. Strontium substitution increases the electrical conductivity values in all the rare earth manganites. With the decreasing ionic radii of rare earth ions, the conductivity value decreases. Among the rare earth manganites studied, (Pr/Nd)(0.75)Sr0.25MnO3 show high electrical conductivity ( > 100 S/cm). The thermal expansion coefficients of Pr0.75Sr0.25MnO3 and Nd0.75Sr0.25MnO3 were found to be 10.2 x 10(-6) and 10.7 x 10(-6) K-1 respectively, which is very close to that of the electrolyte (YSZ) used in solid oxide fuel cells. The atomic-level structure and chemistry of materials ultimately dictate their observed macroscopic properties and behavior. As such, an intimate understanding of these characteristics allows for better materials engineering and improvements in the resulting devices. In our work, two material systems were investigated using advanced electron and ion microscopy techniques, relating the measured nanoscale traits to overall device performance. First, transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (TEM-EELS) were used to analyze interfacial states at the semiconductor/oxide interface in wide bandgap SiC microelectronics. This interface contains defects that significantly diminish SiC device performance, and their fundamental nature remains generally unresolved. The impacts of various microfabrication techniques were explored, examining both current commercial and next-generation processing strategies. In further investigations, machine learning techniques were applied to the EELS data, revealing previously hidden Si, C, and O bonding states at the interface, which help explain the origins of mobility enhancement in SiC devices. Finally, the impacts of SiC bias temperature stressing on the interfacial region were explored. In the second system, focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) was used to reconstruct 3D models of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. Since the specific degradation mechanisms of SOFC cathodes are poorly understood, FIB/SEM and TEM were used to analyze and quantify changes in the microstructure during performance degradation. Novel strategies for microstructure calculation from FIB-nanotomography data were developed and applied to LSM-YSZ and LSCF-GDC composite cathodes, aged with environmental contaminants to promote degradation. In LSM-YSZ, migration of both La and Mn cations to the grain boundaries of YSZ was observed using TEM-EELS. Few substantial changes however, were observed in the overall microstructure of the cells, correlating with a lack of performance degradation induced by the H2O. Using similar strategies, a series of LSCF-GDC cathodes were analyzed, aged in H2O, CO2, and Cr-vapor environments. FIB/SEM observation revealed considerable formation of secondary phases within these cathodes, and quantifiable modifications of the microstructure. In particular, Cr-poisoning was observed to cause substantial byproduct formation, which was correlated with drastic reductions in cell performance.

We report the room temperature cell performance of alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (ADMFCs) with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) as cathode materials. NCNTs show excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity and methanol tolerance in alkaline medium. The open-circuit-voltage (OCV) as well as the power density of ADMFCs first increases and then saturates with NCNT loading. Similarly, the OCV initially increases and reaches saturation with the increase in the concentration of methanol feed stock. Overall, NCNTs exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability with respect to Pt based cathodes.

Polymer based carbon aerogels were prepared by synthesis of a resorcinol formaldehyde gel followed by pyrolysis at 1073K under Ar and activation of the resultant carbon under CO2 at different temperatures. The prepared carbon aerogels were used as active materials in the preparation of cathode electrodes for lithium oxygen cells and the electrochemical performance of the cells was evaluated by galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling and electrochemical impedance measurements. It was shown that the storage capacity and discharge voltage of a Li/O2 cell strongly depend on the porous structure of the carbon used in cathode. EIS results also showed that the shape and value of the resistance in the impedance spectrum of a Li/O2 cell are strongly affected by the porosity of carbon used in the cathode. Porosity changes due to the build up of discharge products hinder the oxygen and lithium ion transfer into the electrode, resulting in a gradual increase in the cell impedance with cycling. The discharge capacity and cycle life of the battery decrease significantly as its internal resistance increases with charge/discharge cycling.

OBJECTIVES: Many flow-cytometric cell characterization methods require costly markers and colour reagents. We present here a novel device for cell discrimination based on impedance measurement of electrical cell properties in a microfluidic chip, without the need of extensive sample preparation steps and the requirement of labelling dyes. MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS: We demonstrate that in-flow single cell measurements in our microchip allow for discrimination of various cell line types, such as undifferentiated mouse fibroblasts 3T3-L1 and adipocytes on the one hand, or human monocytes and in vitro differentiated dendritic cells and macrophages on the other hand. In addition, viability and apoptosis analyses were carried out successfully for Jurkat cell models. Studies on several species, including bacteria or fungi, demonstrate not only the capability to enumerate these cells, but also show that even other microbiological life cycle phases can be visualized. CONCLUSIONS: These results underline the potential of impedance spectroscopy flow cytometry as a valuable complement to other known cytometers and cell detection systems.

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electric power with high efficiency. Traditional SOFC has its disadvantages, such as redox cycling instability and carbon deposition while using hydrocarbon fuels. It is because traditional SOFC uses Ni-cermet as anode. In order to solve these problems, ceramic anode is a good candidate to replace Ni. However, the conductivity of most ceramic anode materials are much lower than Ni metal, and it introduces high ohmic resistance. How to increase the conductivity is a hot topic in this research field. Based on our proposed mechanism, several types of ceramic materials have been developed. Vanadium doped perovskite, Sr1-x/2VxTi1-xO3 (SVT) and Sr0.2Na0.8Nb1-xVxO3 (SNNV), achieved the conductivity as high as 300 S*cm-1 in hydrogen, without any high temperature reduction. GDC electrolyte supported cell was fabricated with Sr0.2Na0.8Nb0.9V0.1O3 and the performance was measured in hydrogen and methane respectively. Due to vanadium’s intrinsic problems, the anode supported cell is not easy. Fe doped double perovskite Sr2CoMoO6 (SFCM) was also developed. By carefully doping Fe, the conductivity was improved over one magnitude, without any vigorous reducing conditions. SFCM anode supported cell was successfully fabricated with GDC as the electrolyte. By impregnating Ni-GDC nano particles into the anode, the cell can be operated at lower temperatures while having higher performance than the traditional Ni-cermet cells. Meanwhile, this SFCM anode supported SOFC has long term stability in the reformate containing methane. During the anode development, cathode improvement caused by a thin Co-GDC layer was observed. By adding this Co-GDC layer between the electrolyte and the cathode, the interfacial resistance decreases due to fast oxygen ion transport. This mechanism was confirmed via isotope exchange. This Co-GDC layer works with multiple kinds of cathodes and the modified cell’s performance is 3 times as the traditional Ni-GDC cell. With this new method, lowering the SOFC operation temperature is feasible.

Single phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1(PbTiO3) ceramics were prepared using the columbite precursor method after optimizing the synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the microstructure of the sintered ceramics. Impedance and modulus spectroscopic data were used to gain an insight into the electrical properties of the samples and with a view to observing the relaxations in them. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
