In Navea, north of Spain, a medieval arch bridge shows a visible distortion (fig.1a). A stone falls down from the web of a gothic vault in a big parish church in Burgos (fig. 1b), and a voussoir falls down from the rib of another gothic vault in Oviedo (fig. 1c). An oval dome collapses in Zaragoza, though another four identical domes remain safe (fig. 1d). Sometimes the building has to support new, heavier loads. The ruin of the abandoned (since the 19th Century) monastery of Melón should be consolidated, some vaults are rebuilt and the visitors can walk over them. A Franciscan Convent is going to be turned into a Cultural Centre, the loads to be supported being multiplied by a factor of two. A little medieval bridge is asked to support the pass of heavy lorries. These are some of the cases I have studied in the last two decades, all of them referring to questions of structural safety. These are the kind of situations which often occurs in the field of Historic Structures. They require a study and an answer. This is no scholarly work (though in some cases new lines of future research will emerge). A judgement must be made by the expert and this judgement affects the safety and economy, in the last instance, of people. As there are rarely unique answers, the behaviour of the expert, then, can also be judged as "ethical", if he proposes an intervention that is necessary and adequate (or, recommends no intervention, judging the situation safe), or "non-ethical", if recommends an unnecessary or disproportionate intervention. In relation to the monument, also, the proposal can be judged ethically; any intervention damaging seriously the character of the monument may be labelled un-ethical.

O convento de S. Francisco, em Montemor-o-Novo, que durante cerca de quatro séculos esteve implantado fora do contexto urbano local, está, na actualidade, envolvido pela malha habitacional e por equipamentos colectivos. O estado de parcial abandono e de degradação acelerada em que se encontra o conjunto, obriga a que, por todas as formas, haja empenho da comunidade social na sua urgente recuperação e valorização cultural. É efectuada uma leitura do conjunto edificado remanescente, uma análise dos materiais aplicados e das técnicas construtivas utilizadas, a que se segue um diagnóstico do estado patológico, identificando-se as anomalias mais relevantes, de natureza estrutural e não estrutural. Apresentam-se propostas para a reparação e eliminação dos factores de alteração. Finalmente, sugerem-se algumas possibilidades para a valorização futura do conjunto, enquanto peça importante do nosso património colectivo. ABSTRACT; The St. Francisco convent in Montemor-o-Novo which during about four centuries was outside the urban context, is nowadays completely involved by the urban agglomerate and collective facilities. The situation of partial abandonment and the accelerated degradation where the joint is, requires to, by all the ways have interest by the social community in its urgent recovery and in its cultural valorization. Is done a reading of the built joint, an analyse of the employed materials and the techniques of construction used, which is followed by a diagnostic of the pathological condition, identifying the most outstanding anomalies, of structural and not structural character, presenting suggestions to its reparation and reduce of the transformation agents. Finally, are enumerate some possibilities to the future benefit of the joint, while important piece of our collective heritage.

Resumen: Daniela Parisi analiza el impacto de la vida de San F rancisco de Asís desde la perspectiva de la historia del pensamiento económico. Haciendo referencia particularmente a la atención otorgada en los círculos franciscanos a los signos de los tiempos, la autora traza el camino desde la vida de San Francisco, pasando por la vida de la Orden hasta el presente, y revela los orígenes del movimiento franciscano como un intento de reforma social y religiosa. En primer lugar, el artículo presenta la vida que llevó San Francisco como una “pobreza material voluntaria” en el contexto de los cambios socio-económicos que tuvieron lugar en el siglo XIII, con el advenimiento de la sociedad comercial. Luego, explica cómo la propuesta de San Francisco creció hasta convertirse en una orden religiosa. Finalmente, el artículo intenta iluminar aquellos aspectos en que la Orden Franciscana puede todavía considerarse un signo de los tiempos a través de una existencia comprometida con la pobreza, eliminando lo superfluo de nuestra vida y viviendo en consonancia con el Evangelio.

First discovered by accident in 1884 – and thereafter informally investigated by workmen, nuns and clergy, for several decades – the archaeological site at the Sisters of Nazareth convent in central Nazareth has remained unpublished and largely unknown to scholarship. However, work by the Nazareth Archaeological Project in 2006–10 showed that this site offers a full and important stratified sequence from ancient Nazareth, including well-preserved Early Roman-period and later features. These include a partially rock-cut structure, here re-evaluated and interpreted on the basis of both earlier and newly recorded data as a first-century ad domestic building – perhaps a ‘courtyard house’ – the first surface-built domestic structure of this date from Nazareth to be published, and the best preserved. The site was subsequently used in the Roman period for burial, suggesting settlement contraction or settlement shift.
