In this paper, we present three counterfeiting attacks on the block-wise dependent fragile watermarking schemes. We consider vulnerabilities such as the exploitation of a weak correlation among block-wise dependent watermarks to modify valid watermarked %(medical or other digital) images, where they could still be verified as authentic, though they are actually not. Experimental results successfully demonstrate the practicability and consequences of the proposed attacks for some relevant schemes. The development of the proposed attack models can be used as a means to systematically examine the security levels of similar watermarking schemes.

A domain independent ICA-based approach to watermarking is presented. This approach can be used on images, music or video to embed either a robust or fragile watermark. In the case of robust watermarking, the method shows high information rate and robustness against malicious and non-malicious attacks, while keeping a low induced distortion. The fragile watermarking scheme, on the other hand, shows high sensitivity to tampering attempts while keeping the requirement for high information rate and low distortion. The improved performance is achieved by employing a set of statistically independent sources (the independent components) as the feature space and principled statistical decoding methods. The performance of the suggested method is compared to other state of the art approaches. The paper focuses on applying the method to digitized images although the same approach can be used for other media, such as music or video.

It is well established that the traditional taxonomy and nomenclature of Chironomidae relies on adult males whose usually characteristic genitalia provide evidence of species distinction. In the early days some names were based on female adults of variable distinctiveness – but females are difficult to identify (Ekrem et al. 2010) and many of these names remain dubious. In Russia especially, a system based on larval morphology grew in parallel to the conventional adult-based system. The systems became reconciled with the studies that underlay the production of the Holarctic generic keys to Chironomidae, commencing notably with the larval volume (Wiederholm, 1983). Ever since Thienemann’s pioneering studies, it has been evident that the pupa, notably the cast skins (exuviae) provide a wealth of features that can aid in identification (e.g. Wiederholm, 1986). Furthermore, the pupae can be readily associated with name-bearing adults when a pharate (‘cloaked’) adult stage is visible within the pupa. Association of larvae with the name-bearing later stages has been much more difficult, time-consuming and fraught with risk of failure. Yet it is identification of the larval stage that is needed by most applied researchers due to the value of the immature stages of the family in aquatic monitoring for water quality, although the pupal stage also has advocates (reviewed by Sinclair & Gresens, 2008). Few use the adult stage for such purposes as their provenance and association with the water body can be verified only by emergence trapping, and sampling of adults lies outside regular aquatic monitoring protocols.

Background As the increasing adoption of information technology continues to offer better distant medical services, the distribution of, and remote access to digital medical images over public networks continues to grow significantly. Such use of medical images raises serious concerns for their continuous security protection, which digital watermarking has shown great potential to address. Methods We present a content-independent embedding scheme for medical image watermarking. We observe that the perceptual content of medical images varies widely with their modalities. Recent medical image watermarking schemes are image-content dependent and thus they may suffer from inconsistent embedding capacity and visual artefacts. To attain the image content-independent embedding property, we generalise RONI (region of non-interest, to the medical professionals) selection process and use it for embedding by utilising RONI’s least significant bit-planes. The proposed scheme thus avoids the need for RONI segmentation that incurs capacity and computational overheads. Results Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed embedding scheme performs consistently over a dataset of 370 medical images including their 7 different modalities. Experimental results also verify how the state-of-the-art reversible schemes can have an inconsistent performance for different modalities of medical images. Our scheme has MSSIM (Mean Structural SIMilarity) larger than 0.999 with a deterministically adaptable embedding capacity. Conclusions Our proposed image-content independent embedding scheme is modality-wise consistent, and maintains a good image quality of RONI while keeping all other pixels in the image untouched. Thus, with an appropriate watermarking framework (i.e., with the considerations of watermark generation, embedding and detection functions), our proposed scheme can be viable for the multi-modality medical image applications and distant medical services such as teleradiology and eHealth.

Using inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the normal-metal proximity effect could force any finite number of Mott-insulating "barrier" planes sandwiched between semi-infinite metallic leads to become "fragile" Fermi liquids. They are fully Fermi-liquid-like at T=0, leading to a restoration of lattice periodicity at zero frequency, with a well-defined Fermi surface, and perfect (ballistic) conductivity. However, the Fermi-liquid character can rapidly disappear at finite omega, V, T, disorder, or magnetism, all of which restore the expected quantum tunneling regime, leading to fascinating possibilities for nonlinear response in devices.

Mental retardation due to fragile X syndrome is one of the genetic disorders caused by tripler repeat expansion, CGG repeat involved in this disease is known to exhibit polymorphism even among normal individuals. Here we describe the development of suitable probes for detection of polymorphism in CGG repeat at FMR1 locus as well as the diagnosis of fragile X syndrome. Using these methods polymorphism at the FMR1 locus has been examined in 161 individuals. Ninety eight patients with unclassified mental retardation were examined, of whom 7 were found to have the expanded (CGG) allele at the FMR1 locus, The hybridization pattern for two patients has been presented as representative data.

Multipotent stem cells can self-renew and give rise to multiple cell types. One type of mammalian multipotent stem cells are neural stem cells (NSC)s, which can generate neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. NSCs are likely involved in learning and memory, but their exact role in cognitive function in the developing and adult brain is unclear. We have studied properties of NSCs in fragile X syndrome (FXS), which is the most common form of inherited mental retardation. FXS is caused by the lack of functional fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP). FMRP is involved in the regulation of postsynaptic protein synthesis in a group I metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5)-dependent manner. In the absence of functional FMRP, the formation of functional synapses is impaired in the forebrain which results in alterations in synaptic plasticity. In our studies, we found that FMRP-deficient NSCs generated more neurons and less glia than control NSCs. The newborn neurons derived from FMRP-deficient NSCs showed an abnormally immature morphology. Furthermore, FMRP-deficient NSCs exhibited aberrant oscillatory Ca2+ responses to glutamate, which were specifically abolished by an antagonist of the mGluR5 receptor. The data suggested alterations in glutamatergic differentiation of FMRP-deficient NSCs and were further supported by an accumulation of cells committed to glutamatergic lineage in the subventricular zone of the embryonic Fmr1-knockout (Fmr1-KO) neocortex. Postnatally, the aberrant cells likely contributed to abnormal formation of the neocortex. The findings suggested a defect in the differentiation of distinct glutamatergic mGluR5 responsive cells in the absence of functional FMRP. Furthermore, we found that in the early postnatal Fmr1-KO mouse brain, the expression of mRNA for regulator of G-protein signalling-4 (RGS4) was decreased which was in line with disturbed G-protein signalling in NSCs lacking FMRP. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) promotes neuronal differentiation of NSCs as the absence of FMRP was shown to do. This led us to study the effect of impaired BDNF/TrkB receptor signaling on NSCs by overexpression of TrkB.T1 receptor isoform. We showed that changes in the relative expression levels of the full-length and truncated TrkB isoforms influenced the replication capacity of NSCs. After the differentiation, the overexpression of TrkB.T1 increased neuronal turnover. To summarize, FMRP and TrkB signaling are involved in normal differentiation of NSCs in the developing brain. Since NSCs might have potential for therapeutic interventions in a variety of neurological disorders, our findings may be useful in the design of pharmacological interventions in neurological disorders of learning and memory.

The effect of template phase on the structures of as-synthesized silica nanoparticles with fragile DDAB vesicles as templates is reported. It is found that the template phase plays a critical role in the growth process of silica: the unstable DDAB vesicles in liquid-crystalline phase often lead to the formation of mesostructured solid spheres, and the rather stable DDAB vesicles in gel phase lead to the formation of hollow spheres with less mesostructures.
