Lycopodiopsis derbyi Renault was analyzed on the basis of compressed silicified stems from four Guadalupian outcrops of the Parana Basin (Corumbatai Formation) in the State of Sao Paulo, Southern Brazil. Dichotomous stems have been recorded, and three different branch regions related to apoxogenesis are described. The most proximal region has larger, clearly rhomboidal leaf cushions, with protruding upper edges; the intermediate transitional region also has rhombic leaf cushions, but they are smaller and less elongated than the lower in the same axis; finally, the most distal region reveals only incipient cushions, with inconspicuous infrafoliar bladders; interspersed microphylls were still attached. A well preserved branch representative of this most distal region was sectioned; it has a siphonostelic cylinder similar to that previously described for L derbyi. The cortex, however, shows new traits, such as a short portion of elongated cells between the periderm and the external cortex (or leaf cushion tissue). The stems were apparently silicified prior to their final burial but were probably not transported for long distances. Their final burial may have taken place during storm events, which were common during the deposition of the Corumbatai Formation. These stems are commonly deformed due to compression, mainly because the internal cortical portions rapidly decayed prior to silicification due to their thin-walled tissue, and are therefore not preserved. The common alkalinity of a shallow marine environment such as that in which the Corumbatai Formation was deposited, should mobilize the silica and favors petrifaction. Based on the new data, an emended diagnosis is proposed and a modification of the identification key published by Thomas and Meyen in 1984 for Upper Paleozoic Lycopsida is suggested. Reduction behaviour of Fe3+/Al2O3 obtained by the decomposition of the oxalate precursor has been investigated by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Calcination of Fe3+/Al2O3 at or below 1070 K yields mainly a poorly ordered, fine particulate form of ?-Al2xFexO3. Calcination at or above 1220 K yields ?-Al2xFexO3. Reduction of Fe3+/Al2O3 samples calcined at or below 1070 K gives the FeAl2O4 spinel on reduction at 870 K; samples calcined at or above 1220 K give Al2-xFexO3 with a very small proportion of metallic iron. Fe3+/Al2O3 samples calcined at 1220 K or above yield metallic iron and a very small proportion of the spinel on reduction below 1270 K. In the samples reduced at or above 1270 K, the main product is metallic iron in both ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic forms. The oxalate precursor route yields more metallic iron than the solgel route.

Phase relations in the pseudoternary system CaO-CoO-SiO2 have been established at 1323 K. Three quaternary oxides were found to be stable: CaCoSi2O6 with clinopyroxene (Cpx), Ca2CoSi2O7 with melilite (Mel), and CaCoSiO4 with olivine (Ol) structures. The Gibbs energies of formation of the quaternary oxides from their component binary oxides were measured using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte in the temperature range of 1000-1324 K. The results can be summarized as follows: CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> CaCoSi2O6 (Cpx), Delta G(f)(0) = -117920 + 11.26T (+/-150) J/mol CoO (rs) + 2CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> Ca2CoSi2O7 (Mel), Delta G(f)(0) = -192690 + 2.38T (+/-130) J/mol CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + SiO2 (Qtz) --> CaCoSiO2 (Ol), Delta G(f)(0) = -100325 + 2.55T (+/-100) J/mol where rs = rock salt (NaCl) structure and Qtz = quartz. The uncertainty limits correspond to twice the standard error estimate. The experimentally observed miscibility gaps along the joins CaO-CoO and CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 were used to calculate the excess free energies of mixing for the solid solutions CaxCo1-xO and (CayCo1-y)CoSiO4:Delta G(E) = X(1 - X)[31975X + 26736 (1 - X)] J/mol and Delta G(E) = 23100 (+/-250) Y(1 - Y) J/mol. A T-X phase diagram for the binary CaO-CoO was computed from the thermodynamic information; the diagram agrees with information available in the literature. The computed miscibility gap along the CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 join is associated with a critical temperature of 1389 (+/-15) K. Stability fields for the various solid solutions and the quaternary compounds are depicted on chemical-potential diagrams for SiO2, CaO, and CoO at 1323 K.

Ure2p is the protein determinant of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae prion state [URE3]. Constitutive overexpression of the HSP70 family member SSA1 cures cells of [URE3]. Here, we show that Ssa1p increases the lag time of Ure2p fibril formation in vitro in the presence or absence of nucleotide. The presence of the HSP40 co-chaperone Ydj1p has an additive effect on the inhibition of Ure2p fibril formation, whereas the Ydj1p H34Q mutant shows reduced inhibition alone and in combination with Ssa1p. In order to investigate the structural basis of these effects, we constructed and tested an Ssa1p mutant lacking the ATPase domain, as well as a series of C-terminal truncation mutants. The results indicate that Ssa1p can bind to Ure2p and delay fibril formation even in the absence of the ATPase domain, but interaction of Ure2p with the substrate-binding domain is strongly influenced by the C-terminal lid region. Dynamic light scattering, quartz crystal microbalance assays, pull-down assays and kinetic analysis indicate that Ssa1p interacts with both native Ure2p and fibril seeds, and reduces the rate of Ure2p fibril elongation in a concentration-dependent manner. These results provide new insights into the structural and mechanistic basis for inhibition of Ure2p fibril formation by Ssa1p and Ydj1p.

Metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxial growth of GaAs doped with isovalent Sb is reported. By increasing the trimethylantimony concentration during growth the total Sb concentration was varied between 1 X 10(17)-1 X 10(19) cm-3. A new deep level defect with an activation energy of the thermal emission rates of E(c) - 0.54 eV is observed. The defect concentration increases with increasing As partial pressure and with increasing Sb doping. It is also found that the EL2 concentration decreases with increasing Sb doping. The new energy level is suggested to be the 0/ + transition of the Sb(Ga) heteroantisite defect. No photocapacitance quenching effect, reflecting a metastable state as seen for EL2 (As(Ga)), is observed for Sb(Ga).

The issue in this matter is that rules for use of electricity in rural areas are limited to the provision of inputs. Adopting guidelines to consider managed sub regions can generate poor results. The focus of this study was to present parameters for indicators of electric energy and agricultural production to allow the formation of city groups in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, with similar electric energy consumption and rural agricultural production. The methodology was the development of indicators that characterize the electric energy consumption/agricultural production and the preparation of groups using indicators with ward of statistical method of groups. The main conclusions were the formation of six homogeneous groups with similar characteristics regarding agricultural production/consumption of electricity. The application of these groups in cities with similar characteristics would produce more satisfactory results than the division of administrative Rural Development Offices (RDO).

The emergence of the state in Europe is a topic that has engaged historians since the establishment of the discipline of history. Yet the primary focus of has nearly always been to take a top-down approach, whereby the formation and consolidation of public institutions is viewed as the outcome of activities by princes and other social elites. Yet, as the essays in this collection show, such an approach does not provide a complete picture. By investigating the importance of local and individual initiatives that contributed to state building from the late middle ages through to the nineteenth century, this volume shows how popular pressure could influence those in power to develop new institutional structures. By not privileging the role of warfare and of elite coercion for state building, it is possible to question the traditional top-down model and explore the degree to which central agencies might have been more important for state representation than for state practice. The studies included in this collection treat many parts of Europe and deal with different phases in the period between the late middle ages and the nineteenth century. Beginning with a critical review of state historiography, the introduction then sets out the concept of 'empowering interactions' which is then explored in the subsequent case studies and a number of historiographical, methodological and theoretical essays. Taken as a whole this collection provides a fascinating platform to reconsider the relationships between top-down and bottom-up processes in the history of the European state.
