Several native herbaceous and subshrub species native to the Cerrado in Brazil are geophytes, that is, they survive the unfavorable dry season and low temperatures, that sometimes coincide with fire, with only the underground system intact. Vernonia oxylepis is one of these species and the aim of this study was to describe the morpho-anatomy of the tuberous root and bud formation on this structure. The main axis of this root is perpendicular to the soil surface, and from which aerial shoots arise periodically throughout the life cycle. On the upper portion of the root, self-grafting of the shoots occurs. The root stores lipids and fructans, exhibits contraction and produces reparatory buds; adventitious buds arise from proliferated pericycle. These characteristics may be related to adaptation of this species to conditions in the Cerrado.

The present study describes the volatile composition of aerial parts (leaves and stems), flowers and fruits from Bidens gardneri and Bidens sulphurea. The first species is widely distributed in Pantanal (Brazil) and is a traditional medicinal plant, while the second species is widely distributed throughout Brazil. In all analyses, observed were constituents like bicycloelemene, alpha-copaene, beta-caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene and others. However, some compounds were identified only in one part of the plants analyzed. These results indicated sonic differences in the composition of the plants studied and they were in agreement with data of literature.

Pineapple plants when grown in the greenhouse by the sand culture technique in order to study the effects of deficiencies of macronutrients in growth, yield, leaf and fruit composition, the main results were the following. As a result of the several treatments, yield decreased in the order: Complete Minus Mg Minus S Minus Ca Minus K; nitrogen and phosphorus deficiente plants did not bear fruit. Leaf analyses (see Table 5-1) showed that the ommission of given element from the nutrient solution always caused a decrease in its level in the green tissue. As seen in Table 5-2 the lack of macronutrients had certain effects on fruit composition: acidity increased in all cases excet in the minus Mg fruits; ash usually decreased reaching its lowest valued in fruits from the minus K plants; when compared to fruits picked in the "normal" plants, those lacking K showed a marked decrease both in brix and in total sugars as well; sulfur deficiency also brought a net reduction in the sugar content. Lychnophora pohlii Sch. Bip. (Asteraceae), known as "Arnica mineira", is widely used in folk medicine and very abundant in the altitude vegetation of rocky grassland. The aim of this work was to study the density of this species and its relationship with soil parameters in rocky grassland in Diamantina, in the Upper Jequitinhonha region, Minas Gerais. Ten contiguous 20 x 50 m plots were marked (total sampled area 10,000 m²) on the campus Juscelino Kubitschek of the Federal University of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys (UFVJM). The plants in these plots were evaluated for frequency, dominance and density. The relationship between the density of this species with nine soil physical and chemical properties was analyzed by means of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The highest plant abundance (I) of the species Lychnophora pohlii Sch. Bip. was found in the vegetation sampling areas: plot 6 with 255 plants, plot 7 with 173, plot 8 with 189, plot 9 with 159, and plot 1 with 151 plants. In these areas, the floristic soil characteristics were similar, resulting in spatial proximity in the ACC diagrams. The density of Lychnophora pohlii was higher in plots with higher pH, P-rem and base saturation, the variables most strongly correlated with the first axis of canonical correspondence analysis.

Atrial natriuretic peptide is cleared from plasma by clearance receptors and by enzymatic degradation by way of a neutral metalloendopeptidase. Inhibition of neutral metalloendopeptidase activity appears to provide an interesting approach to interfere with metabolism of atrial natriuretic peptide to enhance the renal and haemodynamic effects of endogenous atrial natriuretic peptide. In this study, the effects of SCH 34826, a new orally active neutral metalloendopeptidase inhibitor, have been evaluated in a single-blind, placebo-controlled study involving eight healthy volunteers who had maintained a high sodium intake for 5 days. SCH 34826 had no effect on blood pressure or heart rate in these normotensive subjects. SCH 34826 promoted significant increases in excretion of urinary sodium, phosphate, and calcium. The cumulative 5-hour urinary sodium excretion was 15.7 +/- 7.3 mmol for the placebo and 22.9 +/- 5, 26.7 +/- 6 (p less than 0.05), and 30.9 +/- 6.8 mmol (p less than 0.01) for the 400, 800, and 1600 mg SCH 34826 doses, respectively. During the same time interval, the cumulative urinary phosphate excretion increased by 0.3 +/- 0.4 mmol after placebo and by 1.5 +/- 0.3 (p less than 0.01), 1.95 +/- 0.3 (p less than 0.01), and 2.4 +/- 0.4 mmol (p less than 0.001) after 400, 800, and 1600 mg SCH 34826, respectively. There was no change in diuresis or excretion of urinary potassium and uric acid. The natriuretic response to SCH 34826 occurred in the absence of any change in plasma atrial natriuretic peptide levels but was associated with a dose-dependent elevation of urinary atrial natriuretic peptide and cyclic guanosine monophosphate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
