This paper compares the critical impeller speed results for 6 L Denver and Wemco bench-scale flotation cells with findings from a study by Van der Westhuizen and Deglon [Van der Westhuizen, A.P., Deglon, D.A., 2007. Evaluation of solids suspension in a pilot-scale mechanical flotation cell: the critical impeller speed. Minerals Engineering 20,233-240; Van der Westhuizen, A.P., Deglon, D.A., 2008. Solids suspension in a pilot scale mechanical flotation cell: a critical impeller speed correlation. Minerals Engineering 21, 621-629] conducted in a 125 L Batequip flotation cell. Understanding solids suspension has become increasingly important due to dramatic increases in flotation cell sizes. The critical impeller speed is commonly used to indicate the effectiveness of solids suspension. The minerals used in this study were apatite, quartz and hematite. The critical impeller speed was found to be strongly dependent on particle size, solids density and air flow rate, with solids concentration having a lesser influence. Liquid viscosity was found to have a negligible effect. The general Zwietering-type critical impeller speed correlation developed by Van der Westhuizen and Deglon [Van der Westhuizen, A.P., Deglon, D.A., 2008. Solids suspension in a pilot scale mechanical flotation cell: a critical impeller speed correlation. Minerals Engineering 21, 621-629] was found to be applicable to all three flotation machines. The exponents for particle size, solids concentration and liquid viscosity were equivalent for all three cells. The exponent for solids density was found to be less significant than that obtained by the previous authors, and to be consistent with values reported in the general literature for stirred tanks. Finally, a new dimensionless critical impeller speed correlation is proposed where the particle size is divided by the impeller diameter. This modified equation generally predicts the experimental measurements well, with most predictions within 10% of the experimental. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (N(z)) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (U(s)). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ""segregation"" (N/N(2) < 0.60 and U(s)/U > 0.08); ""suspension"" (0.60 <= N/N(2) < 1 and 0.06 < U(s)/U < 0.10); and ""dragging"" (N/N(2) >= 1 and U(s)/U <= 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (D(p) = 90,mu m), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (D(P) = 254 mu m). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

This paper presents and interprets results of experimental measurements of the spatial gas hold-up distribution in a 3 (3) glass rectangular flotation cell at the JKMRC using two different techniques. The gas hold-up device with the capturing technique was developed at the JKMRC and has been used widely in the P9 project(1) while the one with conductivity technique was developed at the CSIRO Thermal and Fluids Engineering laboratory at Highett, Victoria, Australia. Measurements were conducted at more than 64 locations in the cell to determine the local gas hold-up distribution in the cell. Since the measurements using the two techniques were conducted at the same locations, the results may be compared with each other. The results indicate that the gas hold-up varies widely inside the flotation cell. The gas hold-up distributions measured by the two techniques are relatively similar except in some locations which can be reasonably explained. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an integrated methodology for modelling froth zone performance in batch and continuously operated laboratory flotation cells. The methodology is based on a semi-empirical approach which relates the overall flotation rate constant to the froth depth (FD) in the flotation cell; from this relationship, a froth zone recovery (R,) can be extracted. Froth zone recovery, in turn, may be related to the froth retention time (FRT), defined as the ratio of froth volume to the volumetric flow rate of concentrate from the cell. An expansion of this relationship to account for particles recovered both by true flotation and entrainment provides a simple model that may be used to predict the froth performance in continuous tests from the results of laboratory batch experiments. Valuable minerals can be recovered by using froth flotation. This is a widely used separation technique in mineral processing. In a flotation cell hydrophobic particles attach on air bubbles dispersed in the slurry and rise on the top of the cell. Valuable particles are made hydrophobic by adding collector chemicals in the slurry. With the help of a frother reagent a stable froth forms on the top of the cell and the froth with valuable minerals, i.e. the concentrate, can be removed for further processing. Normally the collector is dosed on the basis of the feed rate of the flotation circuit and the head grade of the valuable metal. However, also the mineral composition of the ore affects the consumption of the collector, i.e. how much is adsorbed on the mineral surfaces. Therefore it is worth monitoring the residual collector concentration in the flotation tailings. Excess usage of collector causes unnecessary costs and may even disturb the process. In the literature part of the Master’s thesis the basics of flotation process and collector chemicals are introduced. Capillary electrophoresis (CE), an analytical technique suitable for detecting collector chemicals, is also reviewed. In the experimental part of the thesis the development of an on-line CE method for monitoring the concentration of collector chemicals in a flotation process and the results of a measurement campaign are presented. It was possible to determine the quality and quantity of collector chemicals in nickel flotation tailings at a concentrator plant with the developed on-line CE method. Sodium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate residuals were found in the tailings and slight correlation between the measured concentrations and the dosage amounts could be seen.

Modelling of froth transportation, as part of modelling of froth recovery, provides a scale-up procedure for flotation cell design. It can also assist in improving control of flotation operation. Mathematical models of froth velocity on the surface and froth residence time distribution in a cylindrical tank flotation cell are proposed, based on mass balance principle of the air entering the froth. The models take into account factors such as cell size, concentrate launder configuration, use of a froth crowder, cell operating conditions including froth height and air rate, and bubble bursting on the surface. This communication reports a laboratory and plant comparison between the University of Cape Town (UCT) device (capillary) and the McGill University bubble sizing method (imaging). The laboratory work was conducted on single bubbles to establish the accuracy of the techniques by comparing with a reference method (capture in a burette). Single bubble measurements with the McGill University technique showed a tendency to slightly underestimate (4% for a 1.3 mm bubble) and the UCT technique to slightly overestimate (1% for the 1.3 man bubble). Both trends are anticipated from fundamental considerations. In the UCT technique bubble breakup was observed when measuring a 2.7 mm bubble using a 0.5 mm ID capillary tube. A discrepancy of 11% was determined when comparing the techniques in an industrial-scale mechanical flotation cell. The possible sources of bias are discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Solids concentration and particle size distribution gradually change in the vertical dimension of industrial flotation cells, subject primarily to the flotation cell size and design and the cell operating conditions. As entrainment is a two-step process and involves only the suspended solids in the top pulp region near the pulp-froth interface, the solids suspension characteristics have a significant impact on the overall entrainment. In this paper, a classification function is proposed to describe the state of solids suspension in flotation cells, similar to the definition of degree of entrainment for classification in the froth phase found in the literature. A mathematical model for solids suspension is also developed, in which the classification function is expressed as an exponential function of the particle size. Experimental data collected from three different Outokumpu tank flotation cells in three different concentrators are well fitted by the proposed exponential model. Under the prevailing experimental conditions, it was found that the solids content in the top region was relatively independent of cell operating conditions such as froth height and air rate but dependent on the cell size. Moreover, the results obtained from the total solids tend to be similar to those from a particular gangue mineral and hence may be applied to all minerals in entrainment calculation. The processes that govern the rate of particle recovery in a flotation cell include the following sub-processes: collision, attachment, and stability of the aggregate formed by particles and bubbles. Collision is controlled by bulk hydrodynamics inside the flotation cell, while attachment is largely dominated by variables that belong to the domain of surface chemistry (contact angle, induction time). As for the stability of the particle/bubble aggregate, its efficiency depends on both hydrodynamics plus surface chemistry variables of the system. The flotation recovery of coarse particles of apatite and glass spheres was measured by micro-flotation and batch flotation tests in which hydrodynamic parameters were evaluated, such as impeller rotational speed, diameter, and geometry, as well as particle size and density. Results revealed that a proper impeller rotational speed yielded turbulence levels, which enabled to keep particles fully suspended, this way optimizing the collision efficiency between particles and bubbles, without jeopardizing the stability of the particle-bubble aggregates.
Effect of frother type and concentration on the water recovery and entrainment recovery relationship

A study was undertaken to determine the effects of five industrial frothers on the relationship between entrainment recovery and water recovery. The experiments were conducted using a Batequip rectangular 60-L steel flotation cell that was run in parallel with the first cell in a copper/silver prefloat rougher circuit. The concentration of the frothers ranged from 2.5 to 8.4 g/t. The experiments were repeated at three different froth depths. A power function was found to fit this relationship with no discontinuity in the relationship caused by the changes in frother type and concentration and froth depth.

La tesi realitza un estudi detallat dels principals processos que tenen lloc durant l'eliminació de tinta tòner per flotació. L'estudi del procés d'adhesió de tinta a la superfície de bombolles d'aire s'ha realitzat mitjançant visió artificial. Els resultats obtinguts han mostrat que un excés de tensioactiu provoca una disminució de la quantitat de tinta unida a la bombolla d'aire i per tant una disminució de l'eficàcia del procés de flotació. La caracterització de les bombolles d'aire presents en una cel·la de flotació ha posat de manifest que tant el cabal d'aire com la velocitat de l'agitador configuren la distribució de diàmetres final. L'estudi del procés d'eliminació de tinta per flotació en absència de fibres cel·lulòsiques ha mostrat que les variables físico-químiques estudiades són les que tenen una major influència en el procés d'eliminació de tinta tòner per flotació. Finalment s'han addicionat fibres cel·lulòsiques a la suspensió. S'ha pogut comprovar que s'aconsegueix una bona eliminació de tinta sempre i quan les condicions hidrodinàmiques siguin les adequades.

La tesi doctoral presentada té com a objectius principals l'estudi de les etapes fonamentals de desintegració i flotació en un procés de destintatge de papers vell de qualitats elevades per a poder millorar l'eficàcia d'aquestes etapes clau. Conté una revisió teòrica completa i molt actualitzada del procés de desintegració i flotació tant a nivell macroscòpic com microscòpic. La metodologia de treball en el laboratori, la posada a punt dels aparells, així com les anàlisis efectuades per a valorar la resposta del procés (anàlisi de blancor, anàlisi d'imatge i anàlisi de la concentració efectiva de tinta residual) estan descrites en el capítol de material i mètodes. La posada en marxa permet obtenir unes primeres conclusions respecte la necessitat de treballar amb una matèria primera homogènia i respecte la no significació de la temperatura de desintegració dins l'interval de treball permès al laboratori (20-50°C). L'anàlisi de les variables mecàniques de desintegració: consistència de desintegració (c), velocitat d'agitació en la desintegració (N) i temps de desintegració (t), permet de discernir que la consistència de desintegració és una variable fonamental. El valor de consistència igual al 10% marca el límit d'existència de les forces d'impacte mecànic en la suspensió fibrosa. A consistències superiors, les forces viscoses i d'acceleració dominen l'etapa de desintegració. Existeix una interacció entre la consistència i el temps de desintegració, optimitzant-se aquesta darrera variable en funció del valor de la consistència. La velocitat d'agitació és significativa només per a valors de consistència de desintegració inferiors al 10%. En aquests casos, incrementar el valor de N de 800 a 1400 rpm representa una disminució de 14 punts en el factor de destintabilitat. L'anàlisi de les variables químiques de desintegració: concentració de silicat sòdic (% Na2SiO3), peròxid d'hidrogen (% H2O2) i hidròxid sòdic (% Na2OH), proporciona resultats força significatius. El silicat sòdic presenta un efecte altament dispersant corroborat per les corbes de distribució dels diàmetres de partícula de tinta obtingudes mitjançant anàlisi d'imatges. L'hidròxid sòdic també presenta un efecte dispersant tot i que no és tant important com el del silicat sòdic. Aquests efectes dispersants són deguts principalment a l'increment de les repulsions electrostàtiques que aporten a la suspensió fibrosa aquests reactius químics fent disminuir l'eficàcia d'eliminació de l'etapa de flotació. El peròxid d'hidrogen utilitzat generalment com agent blanquejant, actua en aquests casos com a neutralitzador dels grups hidroxil provinents tant del silicat sòdic com de l'hidròxid sòdic, disminuint la repulsió electrostàtica dins la suspensió. Amb l'anàlisi de les variables hidrodinàmiques de flotació: consistència de flotació (c), velocitat d'agitació durant la flotació (N) i cabal d'aire aplicat (q), s'aconsegueix la seva optimització dins el rang de treball permès al laboratori. Valors elevats tant de la velocitat d'agitació com del cabal d'aire aplicat durant la flotació permeten eliminar majors quantitats de tinta. La consistència de flotació assoleix valors òptims depenent de les condicions de flux dins la cel·la de flotació. Les metodologies d'anàlisi emprades permeten obtenir diferents factors de destintabilitat. Entre aquests factors existeix una correlació important (determinada pels coeficients de correlació de Pearson) que permet assegurar la utilització de la blancor com a paràmetre fonamental en l'anàlisi del destintatge de papers vells, sempre i quan es complementi amb anàlisis d'imatge o bé amb anàlisi de la concentració efectiva de tinta residual. S'aconsegueixen expressions empíriques tipus exponencial que relacionen aquests factors de destintabilitat amb les variables experimentals. L' estudi de les cinètiques de flotació permet calcular les constants cinètiques (kBlancor, kERIC, kSupimp) en funció de les variables experimentals, obtenint un model empíric de flotació que relacionant-lo amb els paràmetres microscòpics que afecten realment l'eliminació de partícules de tinta, deriva en un model fonamental molt més difícil d'interpretar. Mitjançant l'estudi d'aquestes cinètiques separades per classes, també s'aconsegueix determinar que l'eficàcia d'eliminació de partícules de tinta és màxima si el seu diàmetre equivalent és superior a 50 μm. Les partícules amb diàmetres equivalents inferiors a 15 μm no són eliminades en les condicions de flotació analitzades. Es pot dir que és físicament impossible eliminar partícules de tinta de diàmetres molt diferents amb la mateixa eficiència i sota les mateixes condicions de treball. El rendiment del procés analitzat en funció de l'eliminació de sòlids per l'etapa de flotació no ha presentat relacions significatives amb cap de les variables experimentals analitzades. Únicament es pot concloure que addicionar quantitats elevades de silicat sòdic provoca una disminució tant de sòlids com de matèria inorgànica presents en les escumes de flotació.

In recent decades, the generation of solid and liquid waste has increased substantially due to increased industrial activity that is directly linked to economic growth. For that is the most efficient process, it is inevitable generation of such wastes. In the oil industry, a major waste generated in oil exploration is produced water, which due to its complex composition and the large amount generated, has become a challenge, given the restrictions imposed by environmental laws regarding their disposal, making if necessary create alternatives for reuse or treatment in order to reduce the content of contaminants and reduce the harmful effects to the environment. This water can be present in free form or emulsified with the oil, when in the form of an emulsion of oil-water type, it is necessary to use chemicals to promote the separation and flotation is the treatment method which has proved to be more efficient, for it can remove much of the emulsified oil when compared to other methods. In this context, the object of this work was to study the individual effects and interactions of some physicochemical parameters of operations, based on previous work to a flotation cell used in the separation of synthetic emulsion oil / water in order to optimize the efficiency of the separation process through of the 24 full factorial design with center point. The response variables to evaluate the separation efficiency was the percentage of color and turbidity removal. The independent variables were: concentration of de-emulsifying, oil content in water, salinity and pH, these being fixed, minimum and maximum limits. The analysis of variance for the equation of the empirical model, was statistically significant and useful for predictive purposes the separation efficiency of the floater with R2 > 90%. The results showed that the oil content in water and the interaction between the oil content in water and salinity, showed the highest values of the estimated effects among all the factors investigated, having great and positive influence on the separation efficiency. By analyzing the response surface was determined maximum removal efficiency above 90% for both measured for turbidity as a measure of color when in a saline medium (30 g/L), the high oil concentrations (306 ppm) using low concentrations of de-emulsifying (1,1 ppm) and at pH close to neutral

O objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar e discutir a determinação dos parâmetros de dispersão de ar em células mecânicas de flotação, em circuitos industriais brasileiros. Foram investigados os circuitos rougher e scavenger das usinas RPM, Taquari-Vassouras, Copebras e Fosfértil-Catalão (atual Vale Fertilizantes). Nas usinas RPM e Taquari-Vassouras, foram determinados a velocidade superficial do ar (Jg), o hold-up do ar (εg), o diâmetro médio de bolhas (d32) e o fluxo de área superficial de bolhas (Sb). Para as outras usinas, foram determinados somente o Jg e εg. Os resultados mostraram que, com exceção da RPM, todos os circuitos investigados apresentaram baixos valores para os parâmetros de dispersão do ar. Taquari-Vassouras apresentou os mais baixos valores médios para Jg e εg, respectivamente, 0,05 cm/s e 5%. Os maiores valores de Jg foram determinados no circuito rougher da Copebras, 1,17 cm/s, ao passo que a RPM apresentou os maiores valores para o hold-up e tamanho de bolha, respectivamente, 31% e 2,61mm. Os valores obtidos, para Sb, situaram-se abaixo daqueles reportados na literatura.

The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate this phenomena of frother incompatibility, and to offer an explanation based upon several divergent lines of investigation. The research was limited to four common frothing agents, namely, pine oil, n-amyl alcohol, sodium oleate, and sodium lauryl sulphate (Dreft).
