Fleuve glauque : les départements de la Seine, banlieue des romans « Spécial Police » de Frédéric Dard

This paper studies the representation of suburbs as a place of anguish in the “Special Police” novels (Fleuve Noir publisher, Paris) by Frédéric Dard. This anxiety, it is argued, is what lends this collection of 25 novels some of their essential qualities, their unhealthy climate and absolute darkness. Dard’s suburbs fit into the traditions of realism; but the atmosphere, characters and plots owe to the American hardboiled school and like in film noir, space is stylized and dramatized, and often used to express a judgment of moral nature. Spatial representations in these novels are part of a critique of civilization and constitute a comment on the social modernization and public intervention in the development of the French territory in the postwar period. The novels written by Frédéric Dard from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s offer a profoundly original representation of suburban angst and what was not yet known at the time as the suburban malaise. Avoiding clichés and excessively connoted referential spaces, Dard anchor these noir novels he called “novels of the night” in landscapes that are both biographical and intertextual. The West Suburbs of Paris and what was
to become the Yvelines department are at the centre of Dard’s novelistic geography, turning into a mythical and deadly space in which is negotiated an acculturation in France of the evil and ruined world described in American noir.

Noir and the urban imaginary

Noir and the Urban Imaginary is creative practice based PhD research comprising critical analysis (40%) exegesis (10%) and a twenty-six minute film, The Brisbane Line (50%). The research investigates intersection of four elements; the city, the cinema, history and postmodernity. The thesis discusses relationships between each of the four elements and what cinematic representation of cities reveals about modern and postmodern urban experience and historicisation. Key concepts in the research include, 'urbanism', 'historiography', 'modernity', 'postmodernity', 'neo-noir'.

Triple Helix: Film Noir, Neo Noir and Los Angeles – imagining history and remembering the future in the most contemporary city

Modern and Postmodern Los Angeles is examined through the lens of film noir and neo noir. The unique relationship between the city of Los Angeles and cinema is discussed in terms of a historiography emphasizing the role played by these defining film styles and genres. The research draws and extends on the work conducted by Edward Dimendberg, Paula Rabinowitz and Mike Davis, and urban theory approaches associated with the Los Angeles School of Urbanism.

A mönada e o enigma no roteiro noir de Onde andará Dulce Veiga? de Caio Fernando de Abreu

Análise do romance Onde andará Dulce Veiga?(1990), de Caio Fernando Abreu, com fundamento nas idéias de Theodor Adorno, especificamente com base na Teoria Estética. A crítica empreende-se sob três diferentes vertentes: o cinema noir, a música e a autobiografia, sendo essa última uma característica ligada à crítica cultural. Na primeira, detectam-se as influências da linguagem do cinema, em que o lado sombrio da realidade é forte aliado na composição do romance. Na segunda, observam-se os novos paradigmas culturais que emergiram nos anos de 1980 como índices metaficcionais, na ótica de Theresinha Barbieri (2003), de outros analistas, e que dão forma à variada mixagem do todo social. Na terceira vertente, cruzam-se os percursos da vida de Caio Fernando Abreu com a narrativa de ficção Onde andará Dulce Veiga?, a partir da coletânea de cartas, publicadas por Italo Moriconi (2002), escritas em três diferentes décadas: a de 1960, a de 1970 e a de 1980. Pela correspondência, verifica-se que o projeto do romance habitou o imaginário do jornalista, desde 1970, especialmente quando Caio Fernando Abreu passou a trabalhar em redações de jornais e revistas. Les effets de la réouverture de l'embouchure du fleuve Comoé sur le végétation littorale lagunaire (Lagune Ebrié - Côte d'Ivoire)

The results of floristic data collected during two surveys in the eastern region of Ebrié lagoon in 1987 (before the reopening of the inlet) and in 1988 (after the reopening of the inlet) are discussed in this article. Salinity increase (from 4‰ to 30‰) as a result of the reopening in September 1987 of the channel of Comoé river, profoundly modified qualitatively and quantitatively, the plant population. Floating or fixed macrophytes have been completely destroyed. Mangrove forest being the hydrophytic belt of the lagunar rives.

Analyse des effets de l'ouverture du chenal de Grand Bassam (estuaire du fleuve Comoé, Lagune Ebrié) sur la macrofaune benthique lagunaire

This paper presents the results of a comparative study of three series of samples collected in the area near the Bassam channel before, six and twenty months after its opening in September 1987. Observed effects are the decrease in the abundance and the modification of the benthic macrofauna composition. These effects appeared to be definitive, without recovery of the most abundant species Corbula trigona. Most differences noted in the population structure are due to the increase of the salinity and at a least degree to the modification of the nature of the sediment.

Abundance and species variations of the macrofauna associated with the roots of Pistia stratiotes of Ayamé II lake and Comoé river were studied during one year. Samples of plants were collected by hand once a month within a sampler of 1 m2 of surface.

Morphologie et hydrodynamique à l'embouchure du fleuve Bandama

This study deals with the present morphology of the Bandama river mouth in Grand-Lahou (Côte d'Ivoire). At the interface water-sediment channels and shallows appear, covered respectively by fine and medium sands. Topographic surveys conducted from 1989 to 1993 show significant migration of the river mouth from east to west. The average migration rate is about 1.1 meter per mouth. Although for the past two years , a rate of about 3.5 meters per month was observed.

La peche dans le fleuve Niger

The fish production of the River Niger can best be estimated from a country by country evaluation of the tonnage exported and that consumed locally. All exported and some locally consumed fish are preserved by smoking or sun drying, a process which entails a loss of weight. Coefficients to correct for this of between 2.6 to 4 have been calculated depending on the type of product. A further loss occurs due to handling and to insect attack, which may account for up to 40% of the production. Taking the above factors into account the productions estimated for the various countries of the Niger River basin are as follows: Guinea (3,600 t), Mali (90,000 t), Upper Volta and Ivory Coast (negligible), Niger (5,200 t), Dahomey (1,200 t), Nigeria (25,000 t), Cameroon (3,000 t). A total production of 128,000 t is, therefore, obtained for the basin as a whole, excluding the Kainji Reservoir. At this level of production, there have been no intimations of overfishing from any part of the basin, and there is unanimity that fishing could be intensified. On the basis of the estimates of existing production and local estimates of potential production it is possible that up to 200,000 t of fish could be produced annually from the basin as a whole.
