Femtosecond laser pulses are applied to the study of the dynamics and the pathways of multiphoton-induced ionization, autoionization, and fragmentation of Na_2 in molecular-beam experiments. In particular, we report on first results obtained studying electronic autoionization (leading to Na_2{^+} + {e ^-}) and autoionization-induced fragmentation (leading to Na{^+} + Na + {e ^-}) of a bound doubly excited molecular state. The final continuum states are analyzed by photoelectron spectroscopy and by measuring the mass and the released kinetic energy of the corresponding ionic fragments with a time-of-flight arrangement.

Femtosecond spectroscopy carried out earlier on Monellin and some other systems has given insights into the hydration dynamics of the proteins. In the present work, molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on Monellin to study the hydration dynamics. A method has been described to follow up the molecular events of the protein–water interactions in detail. The time constants of the survival correlation function match well with the reported experimental values. This validates the procedure, adapted here for Monellin, to investigate the hydration dynamics in general.

Photosynthetic organisms fuel their metabolism with light energy and have developed for this purpose an efficient apparatus for harvesting sunlight. The atomic structure of the apparatus, as it evolved in purple bacteria, has been constructed through a combination of x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, and modeling. The detailed structure and overall architecture reveals a hierarchical aggregate of pigments that utilizes, as shown through femtosecond spectroscopy and quantum physics, elegant and efficient mechanisms for primary light absorption and transfer of electronic excitation toward the photosynthetic reaction center.

We report the temperature evolution of coherently excited acoustic and optical phonon dynamics in the superconducting iron pnictide single crystal Ca(Fe0.944Co0.056)(2)As-2 across the spin density wave transition at T-SDW similar to 85 K and the superconducting transition at T-SC similar to 20 K. The strain pulse propagation model applied to the generation of the acoustic phonons yields the temperature dependence of the optical constants, and longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the temperature range from 3.1 K to 300 K. The frequency and dephasing times of the phonons show anomalous temperature dependence below T-SC indicating a coupling of these low-energy excitations with the Cooper-pair quasiparticles. A maximum in the amplitude of the acoustic modes at T similar to 170 is seen, attributed to spin fluctuations and strong spin-lattice coupling before T-SDW. Copyright (c) EPLA, 2012

We report on a high peak power femtosecond modelocked VECSEL and its application as a drive laser for an all semiconductor terahertz time domain spectrometer. The VECSEL produced near-transform-limited 335 fs sech2 pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 1 GHz, a centre wavelength of 999 nm and an average output power of 120 mW. We report on the effect that this high peak power and short pulse duration has on our generated THz signal.

In this paper, we report the laser-induced periodic structure with different spatial characteristics on the surface of polished ZnO single-crystalline by high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses. This study demonstrates that, using different laser parameters and irradiation conditions, ZnO nanoripples and nanorods were successfully prepared. We have investigated the surface by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman scattering and photoluminescence (PL). We propose that second-order harmonic has a strong influence on the formation of nanostructures. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Femtosecond laser pulses are used in order to induce dielectric breakdown in gaseous mixtures, namely in some reactive air-methane mixtures. The light emitted from the laser induced plasma was analyzed while the main emission features are identified and assigned. From the analysis of the emission spectra, a linear relationship was found to hold between the intensity of some spectral features and methane content. Finally, the use of femtosecond laser induced breakdown as a tool for the in situ determination of the composition of gaseous mixtures (e.g., equivalence ratio) is also discussed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Many nonlinear optical microscopy techniques based on the high-intensity nonlinear phenomena were developed recent years. A new technique based on the minimal-invasive in-situ analysis of the specific bound elements in biological samples is described in the present work. The imaging-mode Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is proposed as a combination of LIBS, femtosecond laser material processing and microscopy. The Calcium distribution in the peripheral cell wall of the sunflower seedling (Helianthus Annuus L.) stem is studied as a first application of the imaging-mode LIBS. At first, several nonlinear optical microscopy techniques are overviewed. The spatial resolution of the imaging-mode LIBS microscope is discussed basing on the Point-Spread Function (PSF) concept. The primary processes of the Laser-Induced Breakdown (LIB) are overviewed. We consider ionization, breakdown, plasma formation and ablation processes. Water with defined Calcium salt concentration is used as a model of the biological object in the preliminary experiments. The transient LIB spectra are measured and analysed for both nanosecond and femtosecond laser excitation. The experiment on the local Calcium concentration measurements in the peripheral cell wall of the sunflower seedling stem employing nanosecond LIBS shows, that nanosecond laser is not a suitable excitation source for the biological applications. In case of the nanosecond laser the ablation craters have random shape and depth over 20 µm. The analysis of the femtosecond laser ablation craters shows the reproducible circle form. At 3.5 µJ laser pulse energy the diameter of the crater is 4 µm and depth 140 nm for single laser pulse, which results in 1 femtoliter analytical volume. The experimental result of the 2 dimensional and surface sectioning of the bound Calcium concentrations is presented in the work.

We report time-resolved experiments studying the dynamics of the Na_3 B-X system. Femtosecond pump-probe techniques combined with ion time-of-flight (TOF) and zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy allow us to observe the three-dimensional wavepacket motion in the excited Na_3 B state and in the Na_3 X state. The ground state wavepacket is induced by stimulated emission pumping during the pump pulse. The X-state dynamics is dominated by the three vibrational modes of the Na_3. Furthermore we observed pseudorotational wavepacket motion in the B state. We do not observe a fragmentation of the B state within a time interval of 10 ps.

We combine the technique of femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (fs-DFWM) with a high repetition-rate pulsed supersonic jet source to obtain the rotational coherence spectrum (RCS) of cold cyclohexane (C(6)H(12)) with high signal/noise ratio. In the jet expansion, the near-parallel flow pattern combined with rapid translational cooling effectively eliminate dephasing collisions, giving near-constant RCS signal intensities over time delays up to 5 ns. The vibrational cooling in the jet eliminates the thermally populated vibrations that complicate the RCS coherences of cyclohexane at room temperature [Bragger, G.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. A 2011, 115, 9567]. The rotational cooling reduces the high-J rotational-state population, yielding the most accurate ground-state rotational constant to date, B(0) = 4305.859(9) MHz. Based on this B(0), a reanalysis of previous room-temperature gas-cell RCS measurements of cydohexane gives improved vibration rotation interaction constants for the v(32), v(6), v(16), and v(24) vibrational states. Combining the experimental B(0)(C(6)H(12)) with CCSD(T) calculations yields a very accurate semiexperimental equilibrium structure of the chair isomer of cyclohexane
