For the first time, the coupling of fast transient kinetic switching and the use of an isotopically labelled reactant (15NO) has allowed detailed analysis of the evolution of all the products and reactants involved in the regeneration of a NOx storage reduction (NSR) material. Using realistic regeneration times (ca. 1 s) for Pt, Rh and Pt/Rh-containing Ba/Al2O3 catalysts we have revealed an unexpected double peak in the evolution of nitrogen. The first peak occurred immediately on switching from lean to rich conditions, while the second peak started at the point at which the gases switched from rich to lean. The first evolution of nitrogen occurs as a result of the fast reaction between H2 and/or CO and NO on reduced Rh and/or Pt sites. The second N2 peak which occurs upon removal of the rich phase can be explained by reaction of stored ammonia with stored NOx, gas phase NOx or O2. The ammonia can be formed either by hydrolysis of isocyanates or by direct reaction of NO and H2.

The study highlights the importance of the relative rates of regeneration and storage in determining the overall performance of the catalysts. The performance of the monometallic 1.1%Rh/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 and 350 °C was found to be dependent on the rate of NOx storage, since the rate of regeneration was sufficient to remove the NOx stored in the lean phase. In contrast, for the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 °C, the rate of regeneration was the determining factor with the result that the amount of NOx stored on the catalyst deteriorated from cycle to cycle until the amount of NOx stored in the lean phase matched the NOx reduced in the rich phase. On the basis of the ratio of exposed metal surface atoms to total Ba content, the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst outperformed the Rh-containing catalysts at 250 and 350 °C even when CO was used as a reductant.

The H-2-assisted hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) of NO, was investigated using fast transient kinetic analysis coupled with isotopically labelled (NO)-N-15. This allowed monitoring of the evolution of products and reactants during switches of H-2 in and out of the SCR reaction mix. The results obtained with a time resolution of less than 1 s showed that the effect on the reaction of the removal or addition of H-2 was essentially instantaneous. This is consistent with the view that H-2 has a direct chemical effect on the reaction mechanism rather than a secondary one through the formation of "active" Ag clusters. The effect of H-2 partial pressure was investigated at 245 degrees C, it was found that increasing partial pressure of H-2 resulted in increasing conversion of NO and octane. It was also found that the addition of H-2 at 245 degrees C had different effects on the product distribution depending on its partial pressure. The change of the nitrogen balance over time during switches in and out of hydrogen showed that significant quantities of N-containing species were stored when hydrogen was introduced to the system. The positive nitrogen balance on removal of H-2 from the gas phase showed that these stored species continued to react after removal of hydrogen to form N-2. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. The role of hydrogen in promoting the reduction by ammonia of NOx on silver catalysts has been investigated using a Short Time on Stream (STOS) technique to allow differentiation between potentially reactive intermediates and relatively inactive spectator species. Under these conditions, we have used DRIFTS to identify surface nitrate species that are formed and removed on a timescale of seconds. This is in contrast to nitrate species observed under normal steady-state conditions which can continue to form over many tens of minutes. Since this timescale of seconds is very similar to the response rate at which the NH3/NOx to N-2 reaction is accelerated when H-2 is added, or decelerated when H-2 is removed, we conclude that this fast-forming and fast disappearing nitrate species is most probably adsorbed on or close to the active Ag sites. The removal of such a blocking nitrate species from the active sites can explain the effect of H-2 in greatly increasing the rate of the overall de-NOx reaction.

The conducted as well as the induced voltages on control cables and control circuits due to transient electromagnetic (EM) fields generated during switching operations in a gas-insulated substation (GIS) depend on the waveshape of the very fast transient overvoltages and the associated very-fast transient currents (VFTCs). The aim of this paper is to build a basis for characterizing the VFTC generated in gas-insulated switchgear and the, associated equipment during switching operations for the study of transient coupling phenomena. The peak magnitudes of VFTC and their dominant frequency content at various locations have been computed in a 245-kV GIS for different switching operations as well as substation configurations. Finally, the influence of the substation layout on the frequency spectrum, dominant frequencies, and the highest possible frequency component of the VFTC at various distances from the switch have been reported.

A Time of flight (ToF) mass spectrometer suitable in terms of sensitivity, detector response and time resolution, for application in fast transient Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) kinetic catalyst characterization is reported. Technical difficulties associated with such application as well as the solutions implemented in terms of adaptations of the ToF apparatus are discussed. The performance of the ToF was validated and the full linearity of the specific detector over the full dynamic range was explored in order to ensure its applicability for the TAP application. The reported TAP-ToF setup is the first system that achieves the high level of sensitivity allowing monitoring of the full 0-200 AMU range simultaneously with sub-millisecond time resolution. In this new setup, the high sensitivity allows the use of low intensity pulses ensuring that transport through the reactor occurs in the Knudsen diffusion regime and that the data can, therefore, be fully analysed using the reported theoretical TAP models and data processing.

The performance of NOx storage and reduction over 1.5 wt% Pt/20 wt% KNO3/K2Ti8O17 and 1.5 wt% Pt/K2Ti8O17 catalysts has been investigated using combined fast transient kinetic switching and isotopically labelled (NO)-N-15 at 350 degrees C. The evolution of product N-2 has revealed two significant peaks during 60 s lean/1.3 s rich switches. It also found that the presence of CO2 in the feed affects the release of N-2 in the second peak. Regardless of the presence/absence of water in the feed, only one peak of N-2 was observed in the absence of CO2. Gas-phase NH3 was not observed in any of the experiments. However, in the presence of CO2 the results obtained from in situ DRIFTS-MS analysis showed that isocyanate species are formed and stored during the rich cycles, probably from the reaction between NOx and CO, in which CO was formed via the reverse water-gas shift reaction.

Interactions between stimulus-induced oscillations (35-80 Hz) and stimulus-locked nonoscillatory responses were investigated in the visual cortex areas 17 and 18 of anaesthetized cats. A single square-wave luminance grating was used as a visual stimulus during simultaneous recordings from up to seven electrodes. The stimulus movement consisted of a superposition of a smooth movement with a sequence of dynamically changing accelerations. Responses of local groups of neurons at each electrode were studied on the basis of multiple unit activity and local slow field potentials (13-120 Hz). Oscillatory and stimulus-locked components were extracted from multiple unit activity and local slow field potentials and quantified by a combination of temporal and spectral correlation methods. We found fast stimulus-locked components primarily evoked by sudden stimulus accelerations, whereas oscillatory components (35-80 Hz) were induced during slow smooth movements. Oscillations were gradually reduced in amplitude and finally fully suppressed with increasing amplitudes of fast stimulus-locked components. It is argued that suppression of oscillations is necessary to prevent confusion during sequential processing of stationary and fast changing retinal images.

In this work, we observe gate tunable negative differential conductance (NDC) and current saturation in single layer and bilayer graphene transistor at high source-drain field, which arise due to the interplay among (1) self-heating, (2) hot carrier injection, and (3) drain induced minority carrier injection. The magnitude of the NDC is found to be reduced for a bilayer, in agreement with its weaker carrier-optical phonon coupling and less efficient hot carrier injection. The contributions of different mechanisms to the observed results are decoupled through fast transient measurements with nanosecond resolution. The findings provide insights into high field transport in graphene. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4754103]

A mechanistic study of the H-2-assisted Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NOx with octane as reductant over a Ag/Al2O3 catalyst was carried out using a modified DRIFTS cell coupled to a mass spectrometer Using fast transient cycling switching of H-2 with a time resolution of a few seconds It was possible to differentiate potential reaction intermediates from other moieties that are clearly spectator species Using such a periodic operation mode effects were uncovered that are normally hidden in conventional transient studies which typically consist of a single transient In experiments based on a single transient addition of H-2 to or removal of H-2 from the SCR feed it was found that the changes in the concentrations of gaseous species (products and reactants) were not matched by changes at comparable timescales of the concentration of surface species observed by IR This observation indicates that the majority of sur face species observed by DRIFTS under steady-state reaction conditions are spectators In contrast under fast cycling experimental conditions It was found that a surface isocyanate species had a temporal response that matched that of N-15(2) This suggests that some of the isocyanate species observed by infrared spectroscopy could be important intermediates in the hydrogen-assisted SCR reaction although it is emphasised that this may be dependent on the way in which the infrared spectra are obtained It is concluded that the use of fast transient cycling switching techniques may provide useful mechanistic information under certain circumstances.

A torque control scheme, based on a direct torque control (DTC) algorithm using a 12-sided polygonal voltage space vector, is proposed for a variable speed control of an open-end induction motor drive. The conventional DTC scheme uses a stator flux vector for the sector identification and then the switching vector to control stator flux and torque. However, the proposed DTC scheme selects switching vectors based on the sector information of the estimated fundamental stator voltage vector and its relative position with respect to the stator flux vector. The fundamental stator voltage estimation is based on the steady-state model of IM and the synchronous frequency of operation is derived from the computed stator flux using a low-pass filter technique. The proposed DTC scheme utilizes the exact positions of the fundamental stator voltage vector and stator flux vector to select the optimal switching vector for fast control of torque with small variation of stator flux within the hysteresis band. The present DTC scheme allows full load torque control with fast transient response to very low speeds of operation, with reduced switching frequency variation. Extensive experimental results are presented to show the fast torque control for speed of operation from zero to rated.

Hippocampal pyramidal neurons express an intraneuronal map of spectral tuning mediated by hyperpolarization-activated cyclic-nucleotide-gated nonspecific-cation channels. Modeling studies have predicted a critical regulatory role for A-type potassium (KA) channels towards augmenting functional robustness of this map. To test this, we performed patch-clamp recordings from soma and dendrites of rat hippocampal pyramidal neurons, and measured spectral tuning before and after blocking KA channels using two structurally distinct pharmacological agents. Consistent with computational predictions, we found that blocking KA channels resulted in a significant reduction in resonance frequency and significant increases in input resistance, impedance amplitude and action-potential firing frequency across the somato-apical trunk. Furthermore, across all measured locations, blocking KA channels enhanced temporal summation of postsynaptic potentials and critically altered the impedance phase profile, resulting in a significant reduction in total inductive phase. Finally, pair-wise correlations between intraneuronal percentage changes (after blocking KA channels) in different measurements were mostly weak, suggesting differential regulation of different physiological properties by KA channels. Our results unveil a pivotal role for fast transient channels in regulating theta-frequency spectral tuning and intrinsic phase response, and suggest that degeneracy with reference to several coexisting functional maps is mediated by cross-channel interactions across the active dendritic arbor.

Voltage-dependent membrane currents were studied in dissociated hepatocytes from chick, using the patch-clamp technique. All cells had voltage-dependent outward K+ currents; in 10% of the cells, a fast, transient, tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na+ current was identified. None of the cells had voltage-dependent inward Ca2+ currents. The K+ current activated at a membrane potential of about -10 mV, had a sigmoidal time course, and did not inactivate in 500 ms. The maximum outward conductance was 6.6 +/- 2.4 nS in 18 cells. The reversal potential, estimated from tail current measurements, shifted by 50 mV per 10-fold increase in the external K+ concentration. The current traces were fitted by n2 kinetics with voltage-dependent time constants. Omitting Ca2+ from the external bath or buffering the internal Ca2+ with EGTA did not alter the outward current, which shows that Ca2+-activated K+ currents were not present. 1-5 mM 4-aminopyridine, 0.5-2 mM BaCl2, and 0.1-1 mM CdCl2 reversibly inhibited the current. The block caused by Ba was voltage dependent. Single-channel currents were recorded in cell-attached and outside-out patches. The mean unitary conductance was 7 pS, and the channels displayed bursting kinetics. Thus, avian hepatocytes have a single type of K+ channel belonging to the delayed rectifier class of K+ channels.

Fast transient current decay was recorded on POMA samples during current pulses (in the order of milliseconds) provided by a low energy electron beam under an applied field. The characteristic time decay depends on the electron beam energy and on the bias polarity. The results were explained taking into account the effect of space charge, the intrinsic conductivity of the non-irradiated region of the sample and the radiation-induced conductivity of the thin irradiated region. Fitting parameters may provide the value of both intrinsic and radiation-induced conductivities and the average electron range.
