In this paper a pipelined ring algorithm is presented for efficient computation of one and two dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on a message passing multiprocessor. The algorithm has been implemented on a transputer based system and experiments reveal that the algorithm is very efficient. A model for analysing the performance of the algorithm is developed from its computation-communication characteristics. Expressions for execution time, speedup and efficiency are obtained and these expressions are validated with experimental results obtained on a four transputer system. The analytical model is then used to estimate the performance of the algorithm for different number of processors, and for different sizes of the input data.

This paper describes in detail the design of a CMOS custom fast Fourier transform (FFT) processor for computing a 256-point complex FFT. The FFT is well-suited for real-time spectrum analysis in instrumentation and measurement applications. The FFT butterfly processor reported here consists of one parallel-parallel multiplier and two adders. It is capable of computing one butterfly computation every 100 ns thus it can compute a 256-point complex FFT in 102.4 μs excluding data input and output processes.

Details of a new low power fast Fourier transform (FFT) processor for use in digital television applications are presented. This has been fabricated using a 0.6-µm CMOS technology and can perform a 64 point complex forward or inverse FFT on real-time video at up to 18 Megasamples per second. It comprises 0.5 million transistors in a die area of 7.8 × 8 mm and dissipates 1 W. The chip design is based on a novel VLSI architecture which has been derived from a first principles factorization of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix and tailored to a direct silicon implementation.

This paper describes a potentially faster and cheaper method of determining fibre scale frequencies. The method uses the single fibre analyser (SIFAN) to  determine the along the fibre diameter profile. This information is then analysed by the Fast Fourier Transform technique using computer software. The paper shows the close association between the mean scale frequencies determined by this method and the traditional approach using SEM.

Extreme weather and climate events have received increased attention in the last few years, due to the often large loss of agriculture business and exponentially increasing costs associated with them and insurance planning. This increased attention raises the question as to whether extreme weather and climate events are truly increasing, whether this is only a perceived increase exacerbated by enhanced media coverage, or both. There are a number of ways extreme climate events can be defined, such as extreme daily temperatures, extreme daily rainfall amounts, and large areas experiencing unusually warm monthly temperatures, among others. In this study, we will focus our attention in frost and heatstroke events measuring it as the number of days under 0 ºC and number of days with daily maximum over 30ºC monthly respectively. We have studied the trends in these extreme events applying a Fast Fourier Transform to the series to clarify the tendency. Lack of long-term climate data suitable for analysis of extremes is the single biggest obstacle to quantifying whether extreme events have changed over the twentieth century, including high temporal and spatial resolution observations of temperatures. However, several series have been grouped in different ways: chosen the longest series independently, by provinces, by main watersheds and altitude. On the other hand, synthetic series generated by Luna and Balairón (AEMet) were also analyzed. The results obtained by different pooling data are discussed concluding the difficulties to assess the extreme events tendencies and high regional variation in the trends.

Reliability of power converters is of crucial importance in switched reluctance motor drives used for safety-critical applications. Open-circuit faults in power converters will cause the motor to run in unbalanced states, and if left untreated, they will lead to damage to the motor and power modules, and even cause a catastrophic failure of the whole drive system. This study is focused on using a single current sensor to detect open-circuit faults accurately. An asymmetrical half-bridge converter is considered in this study and the faults of single-phase open and two-phase open are analysed. Three different bus positions are defined. On the basis of a fast Fourier transform algorithm with Blackman window interpolation, the bus current spectrums before and after open-circuit faults are analysed in details. Their fault characteristics are extracted accurately by the normalisations of the phase fundamental frequency component and double phase fundamental frequency component, and the fault characteristics of the three bus detection schemes are also compared. The open-circuit faults can be located by finding the relationship between the bus current and rotor position. The effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis method is validated by the simulation results and experimental tests.

Denaturation of tissues can provide a unique biological environment for regenerative medicine application only if minimal disruption of their microarchitecture is achieved during the decellularization process. The goal is to keep the structural integrity of such a construct as functional as the tissues from which they were derived. In this work, cartilage-on-bone laminates were decellularized through enzymatic, non-ionic and ionic protocols. This work investigated the effects of decellularization process on the microarchitecture of cartiligous extracellular matrix; determining the extent of how each process deteriorated the structural organization of the network. High resolution microscopy was used to capture cross-sectional images of samples prior to and after treatment. The variation of the microarchitecture was then analysed using a well defined fast Fourier image processing algorithm. Statistical analysis of the results revealed how significant the alternations among aforementioned protocols were (p < 0.05). Ranking the treatments by their effectiveness in disrupting the ECM integrity, they were ordered as: Trypsin> SDS> Triton X-100.

A CMOS gas sensor array platform with digital read-out containing 27 sensor pixels and a reference pixel is presented. A signal conditioning circuit at each pixel includes digitally programmable gain stages for sensor signal amplification followed by a second order continuous time delta sigma modulator for digitization. Each sensor pixel can be functionalized with a distinct sensing material that facilitates transduction based on impedance change. Impedance spectrum (up to 10 KHz) of the sensor is obtained off-chip by computing the fast Fourier transform of sensor and reference pixel outputs. The reference pixel also compensates for the phase shift introduced by the signal processing circuits. The chip also contains a temperature sensor with digital readout for ambient temperature measurement. A sensor pixel is functionalized with polycarbazole conducting polymer for sensing volatile organic gases and measurement results are presented. The chip is fabricated in a 0.35 CMOS technology and requires a single step post processing for functionalization. It consumes 57 mW from a 3.3 V supply.

Dynamic power consumption is very dependent on interconnect, so clever mapping of digital signal processing algorithms to parallelised realisations with data locality is vital. This is a particular problem for fast algorithm implementations where typically, designers will have sacrificed circuit structure for efficiency in software implementation. This study outlines an approach for reducing the dynamic power consumption of a class of fast algorithms by minimising the index space separation; this allows the generation of field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations with reduced power consumption. It is shown how a 50% reduction in relative index space separation results in a measured power gain of 36 and 37% over a Cooley-Tukey Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based solution for both actual power measurements for a Xilinx Virtex-II FPGA implementation and circuit measurements for a Xilinx Virtex-5 implementation. The authors show the generality of the approach by applying it to a number of other fast algorithms namely the discrete cosine, the discrete Hartley and the Walsh-Hadamard transforms.

Laser plasma interferograms are currently analyzed by extraction of the phase-shift map with fast Fourier transform (FFT) techniques [Appl. Opt. 18, 3101 (1985)]. This methodology works well when interferograms are only marginally affected by noise and reduction of fringe visibility, but it can fail to produce accurate phase-shift maps when low-quality images are dealt with. We present a novel procedure for a phase-shift map computation that makes extensive use of the ridge extraction in the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) framework. The CWT tool is flexible because of the wide adaptability of the analyzing basis, and it can be accurate because of the intrinsic noise reduction in the ridge extraction. A comparative analysis of the accuracy performances of them new tool and the FFT-based one shows that the CWT-based tool produces phase maps considerably less noisy and that it can better resolve local inhomogeneties. The upcoming IEEE 802.11ac standard boosts the throughput of previous IEEE 802.11n by adding wider 80 MHz and 160 MHz channels with up to 8 antennas (versus 40 MHz channel and 4 antennas in 802.11n). This necessitates new 1-8 stream 256/512-point Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) / inverse FFT (IFFT) processing with 80/160 MSample/s throughput. Although there are abundant related work, they all fail to meet the requirements of IEEE 802.11ac FFT/IFFT on point size, throughput and multiple data streams at the same time. This paper proposes the first software defined FFT/IFFT architecture as a solution. By making use of a customised soft stream processor on FPGA, we show how a software defined FFT architecture can meet all the requirements of IEEE 802.11ac with low cost and high resource efficiency. When compared with dedicated Xilinx FFT core, our implementation exhibits only one third of the resources also up to three times of resource efficiency.
