We present new theoretical results on the spectrum of the quantum field theory of the double sine-Gordon model. This non-integrable model displays different varieties of kink excitations and bound states thereof. Their mass can be obtained by using a semiclassical expression of the matrix elements of the local fields. In certain regions of the coupling-constants space the semiclassical method provides a picture which is complementary to the one of the form factor perturbation theory, since the two techniques give information about the mass of different types of excitations. In other regions the two methods are comparable, since they describe the same kind of particles. Furthermore, the semiclassical picture is particularly suited to describe the phenomenon of false vacuum decay, and it also accounts in a natural way the presence of resonance states and the occurrence of a phase transition. This thesis is divided into two parts: interacting dark matter and fluctuations in cosmology. There is an incongruence between the properties that dark matter is expected to possess between the early universe and the late universe. Weakly-interacting dark matter yields the observed dark matter relic density and is consistent with large-scale structure formation; however, there is strong astrophysical evidence in favor of the idea that dark matter has large self-interactions. The first part of this thesis presents two models in which the nature of dark matter fundamentally changes as the universe evolves. In the first model, the dark matter mass and couplings depend on the value of a chameleonic scalar field that changes as the universe expands. In the second model, dark matter is charged under a hidden SU(N) gauge group and eventually undergoes confinement. These models introduce very different mechanisms to explain the separation between the physics relevant for freezeout and for small-scale dynamics.

As the universe continues to evolve, it will asymptote to a de Sitter vacuum phase. Since there is a finite temperature associated with de Sitter space, the universe is typically treated as a thermal system, subject to rare thermal fluctuations, such as Boltzmann brains. The second part of this thesis begins by attempting to escape this unacceptable situation within the context of known physics: vacuum instability induced by the Higgs field. The vacuum decay rate competes with the production rate of Boltzmann brains, and the cosmological measures that have a sufficiently low occurrence of Boltzmann brains are given more credence. Upon further investigation, however, there are certain situations in which de Sitter space settles into a quiescent vacuum with no fluctuations. This reasoning not only provides an escape from the Boltzmann brain problem, but it also implies that vacuum states do not uptunnel to higher-energy vacua and that perturbations do not decohere during slow-roll inflation, suggesting that eternal inflation is much less common than often supposed. Instead, decoherence occurs during reheating, so this analysis does not alter the conventional understanding of the origin of density fluctuations from primordial inflation.

The altered spontaneous emission of an emitter near an arbitrary body can be elucidated using an energy balance of the electromagnetic field. From a classical point of view it is trivial to show that the field scattered back from any body should alter the emission of the source. But it is not at all apparent that the total radiative and non-radiative decay in an arbitrary body can add to the vacuum decay rate of the emitter (i.e.) an increase of emission that is just as much as the body absorbs and radiates in all directions. This gives us an opportunity to revisit two other elegant classical ideas of the past, the optical theorem and the Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory of radiation. It also provides us alternative perspectives of Purcell effect and generalizes many of its manifestations, both enhancement and inhibition of emission. When the optical density of states of a body or a material is difficult to resolve (in a complex geometry or a highly inhomogeneous volume) such a generalization offers new directions to solutions. Dynamical properties of the U-238-U-238 system at the classical turning point, specifically the distance of closest approach, the relative orientations of the nuclei, and deformations have been studied at the sub-Coulomb energy of E(lab) = 6.07 MeV/nucleon using a classical dynamical model with a variable moment of inertia. Probability of favorable alignment for anomalous positron-electron pair emission through vacuum decay is calculated. The calculated small favorable alignment probability value of 0.116 is found to be enhanced by about 16% in comparison with the results of a similar study using a fixed moment of inertia as well as the results from a semiquantal calculation reported earlier.

We discuss a new interacting model for the cosmological dark sector in which the attenuated dilution of cold dark matter scales as a(-3)f(a), where f(a) is an arbitrary function of the cosmic scale factor a. From thermodynamic arguments, we show that f(a) is proportional to the entropy source of the particle creation process. In order to investigate the cosmological consequences of this kind of interacting models, we expand f(a) in a power series, and viable cosmological solutions are obtained. Finally, we use current observational data to place constraints on the interacting function f(a).

The aim of the work was to study the correlation between the orientation and excited-state lifetimes of organic dyes close to dielectric interfaces. For this purpose, an experimental setup was designed and built, guiding the light through a prism in total internal reflection geometry. Fluorescence intensities and lifetimes for an ensemble of dye molecules were analyzed as a function of the excitation and detection polarizations. Working close to the total internal reflection angle, the differences between polarization combinations were enhanced. A classical electromagnetic model that assumes a chromophore as a couple of point-like electrical dipoles was developed. A numerical method to calculate the excitation and emission of dye molecules embedded in a multilayer system was implemented, by which full simulation of the time resolved fluorescence experiments was achieved. Free organic dyes and organic dyes covalently bound to polyelectrolyte chains were used. The polymer functionalization process avoided aggregation and provided control over the dyes position, within a few nanometers to the interface. Moreover, by varying the pH, the polymer chains could be deposited on different substrates with different conformations and the resulting fluorescence characteristics analyzed. Initially the fluorescence of organic dyes embedded in a polymer matrix was studied as a function of the distance between the fluorophores and the polymer-air interface. The non-radiative decay rate, vacuum decay rate and the relative angle between the excitation and emission dipoles of the chromophores could be determined. Different free organic dyes were deposited onto different dielectric spacers, as close as possible to the air-dielectric interface. Surprisingly, the fluorescence characteristics of dyes deposited onto polyelectrolyte layer were in good agreement with theoretical predictions of dyes in a polymer matrix, even when the layer was only 2 nm thick. When functionalized chains were deposited at low pH, on top of a polyelectrolyte spacer, the fluorescence had the characteristics of emitters embedded in a polymer matrix as well. Surface deposition at high pH showed an intermediate behaviour between emitters embedded in polymer and on top of the surface, in air. In general, for low pH values, the chains are deposited on a substrate in a train-like conformation. For high pH values, the chains are deposited in a loop-like conformation. As a consequence at low pH the functionalized polymer strongly interdigitates with the polyelectrolyte chains of the spacer, bringing most of the dyes inside the polymer. Thus, the fluorophores may experience the polymer as surrounding environment. On the other hand, for high pH values the dye-loaded chains adsorbed have a conformational arrangement of dense loops that extend away from the surface. Therefore many fluorophores experience the air as surrounding environment. Changing the spacer from polyelectrolyte to negatively charged silane produced contradictory results for lifetimes and intensities. The fluorescence intensities indicated the behaviour of emitters embedded in a polymer matrix, regardless of the pH value. On the other hand, for low pH values, the excited-state lifetimes showed that the emitters behaved as in air. For higher pH values, an intermediate behaviour between fluorophores located within and above of a dielectric film was observed. The poor agreement between theoretical and experimental data may be due to the simplified model utilized, by which the dipoles are assumed either in one side or in the other with respect to a geometrical air-dielectric interface. In the case when the dielectric film is constituted by the functionalized polymer chains themselves, reality is more complex and a different model may apply. Nevertheless, possible applications of the technique arise from a qualitative analysis.

Three different Norway spruce cutting clones growing in three environments with different soil and climatic conditions were studied. The purpose was to follow variation in the radial growth rate, wood properties and lignin content and to modify wood lignin with a natural monolignol, coniferyl alcohol, by making use of inherent wood peroxidases. In addition, the incorporation of chlorinated anilines into lignin was studied with synthetic model compounds and synthetic lignin preparations to show whether unnatural compounds originating from pesticides could be bound in the lignin polymer. The lignin content of heartwood, sapwood and earlywood was determined by applying Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and a principal component regression (PCR) technique. Wood blocks were treated with coniferyl alcohol by using a vacuum impregnation method. The effect of impregnation was assessed by FTIR and by a fungal decay test. Trees from a fertile site showed the highest growth rate and sapwood lignin content and the lowest latewood proportion, weight density and modulus of rupture (MOR). Trees from a medium fertile site had the lowest growth rate and the highest latewood proportion, weight density, modulus of elasticity (MOE) and MOR. The most rapidly growing clone showed the lowest latewood proportion, weight density, MOE and MOR. The slowest growing clone had the lowest sapwood lignin content and the highest latewood proportion, weight density, MOE and MOR. Differences between the sites and clones were small, while fairly large variation was found between the individual trees and growing seasons. The cutting clones maintained clone-dependent wood properties in the different growing sites although variation between trees was high and climatic factors affected growth. The coniferyl alcohol impregnation increased the content of different lignin-type phenolic compounds in the wood as well as wood decay resistance against a white-rot fungus, Coriolus versicolor. During the synthetic lignin preparation 3,4-dichloroaniline became bound by a benzylamine bond to β-O-4 structures in the polymer and it could not be released by mild acid hydrolysis. The natural monolignol, coniferyl alcohol, and chlorinated anilines could be incorporated into the lignin polymer in vivo and in vitro, respectively.

Mn2+-doped xBaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3) and BaMgAl10O17 phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. The investigation of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation spectra of these phosphors exhibits that 0.82BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a stronger absorption than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ at about 147 nm. The emission spectra under VUV excitation demonstrated that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a higher luminescent intensity than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+. The lifetime analysis indicates that they have similar decay times, indicating that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ can be used as luminescent materials for plasma display panels. We observed that the critical concentration of the Mn2+ ions by host excitation is different from that of Mn2+ direct excitation, revealing a different mechanism of energy transfer. The critical distance was calculated. A model was suggested to explain the process of the energy transfer from the host to the Mn2+ ions.
