This thesis focuses on studying molecular structure and internal dynamics by using pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave (PJ-FTMW) spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations. Several kinds of interesting chemical problems are investigated by analyzing the MW spectra of the corresponding molecular systems. First, the general aspects of rotational spectroscopy are summarized, and then the basic theory on molecular rotation and experimental method are described briefly. ab initio and density function theory (DFT) calculations that used in this thesis to assist the assignment of rotational spectrum are also included. From chapter 3 to chapter 8, several molecular systems concerning different kind of general chemical problems are presented. In chapter 3, the conformation and internal motions of dimethyl sulfate are reported. The internal rotations of the two methyl groups split each rotational transition into several components line, allowing for the determination of accurate values of the V3 barrier height to internal rotation and of the orientation of the methyl groups with respect to the principal axis system. In chapter 4 and 5, the results concerning two kinds of carboxylic acid bi-molecules, formed via two strong hydrogen bonds, are presented. This kind of adduct is interesting also because a double proton transfer can easily take place, connecting either two equivalent or two non-equivalent molecular conformations. Chapter 6 concerns a medium strong hydrogen bonded molecular complex of alcohol with ether. The dimer of ethanol-dimethylether was chosen as the model system for this purpose. Chapter 7 focuses on weak halogen…H hydrogen bond interaction. The nature of O-H…F and C-H…Cl interaction has been discussed through analyzing the rotational spectra of CH3CHClF/H2O. In chapter 8, two molecular complexes concerning the halogen bond interaction are presented.

The recent successful pregnancy of Thomas Beatie, a transgender FTM, billed by the various media as ‘the pregnant man’, has stirred up considerably diverse public opinion and debate, some supportive and indicative of changing and progressive ideas around sex, gender and sexuality; others condemnatory in their claims that Beatie’s pregnancy is an affront to the laws of Nature and/or God. Desired or derided, the pregnant male body contests the terrain of reproductive embodiment and the orthodoxy of Western systems of gender categorization. This chapter analyses a selection of media and internet responses to the case of the pregnant man, arguing that most disturbing of all it seems, is the body in-between (Kristeva 1982, p.4), the one that visibly defies socially obdurate gender oppositions of male and female, feminine and masculine in its insistence on being, to borrow from Homi Bhabha, a ‘third space of enunciation.’ Banana Yoshimoto’s novella Kitchen, also contests gender boundaries in its characterisation of Eriko, a transgendered male to female, a father, then a mother. In this narrative the in-between, the ambiguous, is not reviled but rather celebrated as a ‘horizon of possibility’ (Halperin, qtd in Jagose 1996 http://www.australianhumanitiesreview.org/archive/Issue-Dec- 1996/jagose.html).

A practical method is proposed to identify the mode associated with the frequency part of the eigenvalue of the Floquet transition matrix (FTM). From the FTM eigenvector, which contains the states and their derivatives, the ratio of the derivative and the state corresponding to the largest component is computed. The method exploits the fact that the imaginary part of this (complex) ratio closely approximates the frequency of the mode. It also lends itself well to automation and has been tested over a large number of FTMs of order as high as 250.

Floquet analysis is widely used for small-order systems (say, order M < 100) to find trim results of control inputs and periodic responses, and stability results of damping levels and frequencies, Presently, however, it is practical neither for design applications nor for comprehensive analysis models that lead to large systems (M > 100); the run time on a sequential computer is simply prohibitive, Accordingly, a massively parallel Floquet analysis is developed with emphasis on large systems, and it is implemented on two SIMD or single-instruction, multiple-data computers with 4096 and 8192 processors, The focus of this development is a parallel shooting method with damped Newton iteration to generate trim results; the Floquet transition matrix (FTM) comes out as a byproduct, The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the FTM are computed by a parallel QR method, and thereby stability results are generated, For illustration, flap and flap-lag stability of isolated rotors are treated by the parallel analysis and by a corresponding sequential analysis with the conventional shooting and QR methods; linear quasisteady airfoil aerodynamics and a finite-state three-dimensional wake model are used, Computational reliability is quantified by the condition numbers of the Jacobian matrices in Newton iteration, the condition numbers of the eigenvalues and the residual errors of the eigenpairs, and reliability figures are comparable in both the parallel and sequential analyses, Compared to the sequential analysis, the parallel analysis reduces the run time of large systems dramatically, and the reduction increases with increasing system order; this finding offers considerable promise for design and comprehensive-analysis applications.

Light microscopy has been one of the most common tools in biological research, because of its high resolution and non-invasive nature of the light. Due to its high sensitivity and specificity, fluorescence is one of the most important readout modes of light microscopy. This thesis presents two new fluorescence microscopic imaging techniques: fluorescence optofluidic microscopy and fluorescent Talbot microscopy. The designs of the two systems are fundamentally different from conventional microscopy, which makes compact and portable devices possible. The components of the devices are suitable for mass-production, making the microscopic imaging system more affordable for biological research and clinical diagnostics.

Fluorescence optofluidic microscopy (FOFM) is capable of imaging fluorescent samples in fluid media. The FOFM employs an array of Fresnel zone plates (FZP) to generate an array of focused light spots within a microfluidic channel. As a sample flows through the channel and across the array of focused light spots, a filter-coated CMOS sensor collects the fluorescence emissions. The collected data can then be processed to render a fluorescence microscopic image. The resolution, which is determined by the focused light spot size, is experimentally measured to be 0.65 μm.

Fluorescence Talbot microscopy (FTM) is a fluorescence chip-scale microscopy technique that enables large field-of-view (FOV) and high-resolution imaging. The FTM method utilizes the Talbot effect to project a grid of focused excitation light spots onto the sample. The sample is placed on a filter-coated CMOS sensor chip. The fluorescence emissions associated with each focal spot are collected by the sensor chip and are composed into a sparsely sampled fluorescence image. By raster scanning the Talbot focal spot grid across the sample and collecting a sequence of sparse images, a filled-in high-resolution fluorescence image can be reconstructed. In contrast to a conventional microscope, a collection efficiency, resolution, and FOV are not tied to each other for this technique. The FOV of FTM is directly scalable. Our FTM prototype has demonstrated a resolution of 1.2 μm, and the collection efficiency equivalent to a conventional microscope objective with a 0.70 N.A. The FOV is 3.9 mm × 3.5 mm, which is 100 times larger than that of a 20X/0.40 N.A. conventional microscope objective. Due to its large FOV, high collection efficiency, compactness, and its potential for integration with other on-chip devices, FTM is suitable for diverse applications, such as point-of-care diagnostics, large-scale functional screens, and long-term automated imaging.

Pesticide bioconcentration modelling for fruit trees.

Background: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure to mature (FTM) rates contribute to excessive dependence on central venous catheters for haemodialysis. Choosing the most appropriate vascular access site for an individual patient is guided largely by their age, co-morbidities and clinical examination. We investigated the clinical predictors of AVF FTM in a European cohort of patients and applied an existing clinical risk prediction model for AVF FTM to this population.
Methods: A prospective cohort study was designed that included all patients undergoing AVF creation between January 2009 and December 2014 in a single centre (Belfast City Hospital) who had a functional AVF outcome observed by March 2015.
Results: A total of 525 patients had a functional AVF outcome recorded and were included in the FTM analysis. In this cohort, 309 (59%) patients achieved functional AVF patency and 216 (41%) patients had FTM. Female gender [P < 0.001, odds ratio (OR) 2.03 (CI 1.37–3.02)] and lower-arm AVF [P < 0.001, OR 4.07 (CI 2.77–5.92)] were associated with AVF FTM. The Lok model did not predict FTM outcomes based on the associated risk stratification in our population.
Conclusions: In this European study, female gender was associated with twice the risk of AVF FTM and a lower-arm AVF with four times the risk of FTM. The FTM risk prediction model was not found to be discriminative in this population. Clinical risk factors for AVF FTM vary between populations;we would recommend that units investigate their own clinical predictors of FTM to maximize AVF functional patency and ultimately survival in dialysis patients. Clinical predictors of AVF FTM may not be sufficient on their own to improve vascular access functional patency rates.

Objective: Guidelines recommend the creation of a wrist radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (RAVF) as initial hemodialysis vascular access. This study explored the potential of preoperative ultrasound vessel measurements to predict AVF failure to mature (FTM) in a cohort of patients with end-stage renal disease in Northern Ireland

.Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of all patients who had preoperative ultrasound mapping of upper limb blood vessels carried out from August 2011 to December 2014 and whose AVF reached a functional outcome by March 2015.

Results: There were 152 patients (97% white) who had ultrasound mapping andan AVF functional outcome recorded; 80 (54%) had an upper arm AVF created, and 69 (46%) had a RAVF formed. Logistic regression revealed that female gender (odds ratio [OR], 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-5.55; P = .025), minimum venous diameter (OR, 0.6; 95% CI, 0.39-0.95; P = .029), and RAVF (OR, 0.4; 95% CI, 0.18-0.89; P = .026) were associated with FTM. On subgroup analysis of the RAVF group, RAVFs with an arterial volume flow <50 mL/min were seven times as likely to fail as RAVFs with higher volume flows (OR, 7.0; 95% CI, 2.35-20.87; P < .001).

Conclusions: In this cohort, a radial artery flow rate <50 mL/min was associated with a sevenfold increased risk of FTM in RAVF, which to our knowledge has not been previously reported in the literature. Preoperative ultrasound mapping adds objective assessment in the clinical prediction of AVF FTM.

The fission-track method (FTM) in apatite was applied to 45 samples collected in the Serra da Mantiqueira (Mantiqueira mountain range), the Serra do Mar (Mar mountain range), regions next to these mountain ranges and the coastal region between Ubatuba and Santos in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to study the thermochronology of the South American Platform in southeast Brazil and its influence on Santos and Campos basins. The data presented in this work complement the previously presented data on the same region (Tello Saenz et al., 2003. J. S. Am. Earth Sci. 15, 765-774) with 31 new samples analyzed. The weighted mean of the corrected ages from high Mantiqueira (around 1000 m), (121 +/- 6) Ma, coincides with the South Atlantic opening. The fact that its thermal history starts at a relatively low temperature (similar to 80 degrees C) suggests that the age of similar to 120 Ma would be the formation age of Serra da Mantiqueira due to a rapid pulse, in which tracks had no time to be retained at the closure temperature, that is similar to 120 degrees C. The Serra do Mar presents a more complicated thermal history, with several reactivations indicated by the changes in the slope of its cooling curve. The thermal histories obtained in the regions next to these mountain ranges are compatible with the results mentioned above. The Santos Basin has unconformities that agree with changes in the slope thermal histories of the studied region. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The zircon mineral is widely studied in geochronology. In the case of the fission track method (FTM), the age is determined by the density of fission tracks at the zircon surface, which can be observed with an optical microscope after an appropriate chemical treatment (etching). The etching must be isotropic at the zircon grain surface to be used in the FTM, which leads those zircon grains whose etching is anisotropic to be discarded. The only reason for this discarding is the nonuniform morphology of the surface grain seen by optical microscopy, that is, no further physicochemical analysis is performed. In this work, combining micro-Raman and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study the etching anisotropy, it was shown that zircon grains that present at least one area at the surface where the density of fission track is uniform can be used in the FTM. The micro-Raman showed characteristic spectra of the standard zircon sample either from the areas where there are tracks or from where there are not. The only difference found was in the Raman bandwidths, which were broader for the areas with higher density of fission tracks. This suggests simply a decrease in the relative percentage of the crystalline/amorphous phases at these areas. The SEM/energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) showed that there were no significant differences in the principal chemical composition at the areas with and without fission tracks.
