Materials obtained during the synthesis of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) transmission spectroscopy and/or Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS). By these techniques the spectrometric alterations that occurred during the process were observed. The characterized species during the synthesis of HMX were alpha-HMX, beta-HMX, hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and HMX/RDX mixtures. The FTIR-PAS was verified to be a promising technique of great usefulness of the characterization of highly energetic materials because it is fast, simple and requires no sample preparation unlike Fourier transform infrared transmission technique (KBr pellet). The FTIR-PAS analysis showed that with small sample quantity is possible to distinguish between thealpha-HMX and beta-HMX and to detect even in a qualitative way different HMX / RDX ratios.

In this study, cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (CEPAS) was applied in different drug detection schemes. The study was divided into two different applications: trace detection of vaporized drugs and drug precursors in the gas-phase, and detection of cocaine abuse in hair. The main focus, however, was the study of hair samples. In the gas-phase, methyl benzoate, a hydrolysis product of cocaine hydrochloride, and benzyl methyl ketone (BMK), a precursor of amphetamine and methamphetamine were investigated. In the solid-phase, hair samples from cocaine overdose patients were measured and compared to a drug-free reference group. As hair consists mostly of long fibrous proteins generally called keratin, proteins from fingernails and saliva were also studied for comparison. Different measurement setups were applied in this study. Gas measurements were carried out using quantum cascade lasers (QLC) as a source in the photoacoustic detection. Also, an external cavity (EC) design was used for a broader tuning range. Detection limits of 3.4 particles per billion (ppb) for methyl benzoate and 26 ppb for BMK in 0.9 s were achieved with the EC-QCL PAS setup. The achieved detection limits are sufficient for realistic drug detection applications. The measurements from drug overdose patients were carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) PAS. The drug-containing hair samples and drug-free samples were both measured with the FTIR-PAS setup, and the measured spectra were analyzed statistically with principal component analysis (PCA). The two groups were separated by their spectra with PCA and proper spectral pre-processing. To improve the method, ECQCL measurements of the hair samples, and studies using photoacoustic microsampling techniques, were performed. High quality, high-resolution spectra with a broad tuning range were recorded from a single hair fiber. This broad tuning range of an EC-QCL has not previously been used in the photoacoustic spectroscopy of solids. However, no drug detection studies were performed with the EC-QCL solid-phase setup.

The Polymeric Precursor Method has proved suitable for synthesizing reactive powders using low temperatures of calcination, especially when compared with conventional methods. However, during the thermal decomposition of the polymeric precursor the combustion event can be releases an additional heat that raises the temperature of the sample in several tens of degrees Celsius above the set temperature of the oven. This event may be detrimental to some material types, such as the titanium dioxide semiconductor. This ceramic material has a phase transition at around 600 ° C, which involves the irreversible structural rearrangement, characterized by the phase transition from anatase to rutile TiO2 phase. The control of the calcination step then becomes very important because the efficiency of the photocatalyst is dependent on the amount of anatase phase in the material. Furthermore, use of dopant in the material aims to improve various properties, such as increasing the absorption of radiation and in the time of the excited state, shifting of the absorption edge to the visible region, and increasing of the thermal stability of anatase. In this work, samples of titanium dioxide were synthesized by the Polymeric Precursor Method in order to investigate the effect of Fe (III) doping on the calcination stages. Thermal analysis has demonstrated that the Fe (III) insertion at 1 mol% anticipates the organic decomposition, reducing the combustion event in the final calcination. Furthermore, FTIR-PAS, XRD and SEM results showed that organic matter amount was reduced in the Fe (III)-doped TiO2 sample, which reduced the rutile phase amount and increased the reactivity and crystallinity of the powder samples.

Arctic soils contain a large fraction of Earth's stored carbon. Temperature increases in the Arctic may enhance decomposition of this stored carbon, shifting the role of Arctic soils from a net sink to a new source of atmospheric CO2. Predicting the impact of Arctic warming on soil carbon reserves requires knowledge of the composition of the stored organic matter. Here, we employ solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared-photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) to investigate the chemical composition of soil organic matter collected from drained thaw-lake basins ranging in age from 0 to 5500 years before present (y BP). The 13C NMR and FTIR-PAS data were largely congruent. Surface horizons contain relatively large amounts of O-alkyl carbon, suggesting that the soil organic matter is rich in labile constituents. Soil organic matter decreases with depth with the relative amounts of O-alkyl carbon decreasing and aromatic carbon increasing. These data indicate that lower horizons are in a more advanced stage of decomposition than upper horizons. Nonetheless, a substantial fraction of carbon in lower horizons, even for ancient thaw-lake basins (2000-5500 y BP), is present as O-alkyl carbon reflecting the preservation of intrinsically labile organic matter constituents. Climate change-induced increases in the depth of the soil active layer are expected to accelerate the depletion of this carbon.

Early reports stated that Au was a catalyst of choice for the BOR because it would yield a near complete faradaic efficiency. However, it has recently been suggested that gold could yield to some extent the heterogeneous hydrolysis of BH(4)(-),therefore lowering the electron count per BH(4)(-), especially at low potential. Actually, the blur will exist regarding the BOR mechanism on Au as long as no physical proof regarding the reaction intermediates is not put forward. In that frame, in situ physical techniques like FTIR exhibit some interest to study the BOR. Consequently, in situ infrared reflectance spectroscopy measurements (SPAIRS technique) have been performed in 1 M NaOH/1 M NaBH(4) on a gold electrode with the aim to detect the intermediate species. We monitored several bands in B-H ((nu) over bar similar to 1180,1080 and 972 cm(-1)) and B-O bond regions ((nu) over bar =1325 and similar to 1425cm(-1)), which appear sequentially as a function of the electrode polarization. These absorption bands are assigned to BH(3), BH(2) and BO(2)(-) species. At the light of the experimental results, possible initial elementary steps of the BOR on gold electrode have been proposed and discussed according to the relevant literature data.

A comprehensive study was conducted on mesoporous MCM-41. Spectroscopic examinations demonstrated that three types of silanol groups, i.e., single, (SiO)(3)Si-OH, hydrogen-bonded, (SiO)(3)Si-OH-OH-Si(SiO)(3), and geminal, (SiO)(2)Si(OH)(2), can be observed. The number of silanol groups/nm(2), alpha(OH), as determined by NMR, varies between 2.5 and 3.0 depending on the template-removal methods. All these silanol groups were found to be the active sites for adsorption of pyridine with desorption energies of 91.4 and 52.2 kJ mol(-1), respectively. However, only free silanol groups (involving single and geminal silanols) are highly accessible to the silylating agent, chlorotrimethylsilane. Silylation can modify both the physical and chemical properties of MCM-41.

Trinta por cento das faringotonsilites agudas são de etiologia estreptocócica com potencial de complicações como a glomerulonefrite difusa aguda e febre reumática. Crianças de creches apresentam maior incidência destas infecções. OBJETIVO: Identificar e comparar a prevalência do Streptococcus pyogenes na orofaringe entre crianças que freqüentam creches e crianças não-institucionalizadas, em duas regiões do Brasil. CASUÍSTICA E MÉTODO: Estudo prospectivo com 200 crianças, provenientes da cidade de Porto Velho/RO e São Paulo/SP, em quatro grupos, freqüentadoras ou não de creches. Realizou-se swab de orofaringe e cultura para identificação do Streptococcus pyogenes. RESULTADOS: Prevalência de 8% e 2% entre as crianças de São Paulo que atendem a creches e do grupo controle, respectivamente, apresentando valor estatístico (p=0,02). Prevalência de 24% e 16% nos grupos de Porto Velho/RO que freqüentam creche e controle respectivamente, não caracterizando diferença estatisticamente significante (p=0,18). Observou-se diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos creche e controle de São Paulo/SP aos seus correspondentes de Porto Velho/RO (p < 0,01). CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados deste estudo nos permitem sugerir que freqüência em creches representa um fator de risco para a colonização de orofaringe pelo Streptococcus pyogenes, fato observado em populações distintas, porém com significância estatística em apenas uma das duas amostras.

Este trabalho analisou a influência do país sobre o desempenho das firmas. A análise empírica tomou por base uma amostra de 83.641 observações de 10.927 firmas em 37 países e 224 indústrias, em um período de 10 anos. Um modelo linear hierárquico de três níveis com classificação cruzada permitiu identificar que a importância relativa dos efeitos país, indústria e interação indústria-país é semelhante e, em conjunto, aproximadamente da mesma magnitude do efeito firma. Além de estimar a importância do efeito país, o trabalho analisou a infl uência individual de cada país sobre o desempenho das fi rmas, o que permitiu a elaboração de um ranking de países com base na lucratividade das fi rmas.

Considerando o entremeio da crise do Estado e da redemocratização no Brasil, este artigo volta-se para uma descrição e análise dos fatos e circunstâncias que marcaram o ensino de graduação em administração pública no Brasil no período 1983-94, considerado pelos autores como um dos ciclos (ou estágios de construção) desta formação acadêmica. Metodologicamente, o artigo faz a revisão bibliográfica daquelas obras que abordam direta e indiretamente o tema, incluindo a revisita de suas fontes; analisa as leis e pareceres existentes sobre o ensino de graduação em administração pública nesse intervalo de tempo, bem como utiliza-se de algumas entrevistas semiestruturadas com acadêmicos que vivenciaram tal período. No que se refere aos resultados, observa-se que o período 1983-94, diferentemente do 1ºciclo (1952-65) e do 2ºciclo (1966-82), quando a formação acadêmica em administração pública tinha uma identidade - aderente à concepção (e ao projeto) de Estado e aos contornos (e à produção) do campo do saber da administração pública -, tendo na Ebap/FGV um case modelar, foi um estágio de construção problemático, refletindo a crise do Estado dos anos 1980 e, igualmente, a crise (ou descontinuidade) paradigmática do campo do saber em administração pública no Brasil em tal época.
