Ionic liquid monomer 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bromide (ViEtIM(+)Br(-)) was first used to copolymerize with acrylonitrile (AN) successfully under various conditions. This was achieved with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. The kinetics of this copolymerization were studied. The values of the monomer apparent reactivity ratios were calculated by the Kelen-Tudos method. The apparent reactivity ratios of ViEtIM(+)Br(-) (r(ViEtIM+Br-)) and AN (r(AN)) were similar at polymerization conversions of less than 10%, (r(AN) = 0.954, r(ViEtIM+Br-) = 0.976). The copolymers were obtained with high molecular weights and high hydrophilicides. The copolymers were characterized by H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. These copolymers may be potentially useful in the preparation of precursor fibers and carbon fibers.

Herein we describe our application of the O-directed free radical hydrostannation of disubstituted alkyl-acetylenes (with Ph3SnH and Et3B) to the (+)-pumiliotoxin B total synthesis problem. Specifically, we report on the use of this method in the synthesis of the Overman alkyne 8, and thereby demonstrate the great utility of this process in a complex natural product total synthesis setting for the very first time. We also report here on a new, stereocontrolled, and highly practical enantioselective pathway to Overman's pyrrolidine epoxide partner 9 for 8, which overcomes the previous requirement for use of preparative HPLC to separate the 1:1 mixture of diastereomeric epoxides that was obtained in the original synthesis of 9.

Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) is known to be a locus of mutation in familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS). Transgenic mice that express a mutant Cu,Zn-SOD, Gly-93--> Ala (G93A), have been shown to develop amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) symptoms. We cloned the FALS mutant, G93A, and wild-type cDNA of human Cu,Zn-SOD, overexpressed them in Sf9 insect cells, purified the proteins, and studied their enzymic activities for catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide anions and the generation of free radicals with H2O2 as substrate. Our results showed that both enzymes contain one copper ion per subunit and have identical dismutation activity. However, the free radical-generating function of the G93A mutant, as measured by the spin trapping method, is enhanced relative to that of the wild-type enzyme, particularly at lower H2O2 concentrations. This is due to a small, but reproducible, decrease in the value of Km for H2O2 for the G93A mutant, while the kcat is identical for both enzymes. Thus, the ALS symptoms observed in G93A transgenic mice are not caused by the reduction of Cu,Zn-SOD activity with the mutant enzyme; rather, it is induced by a gain-of-function, an enhancement of the free radical-generating function. This is consistent with the x-ray crystallographic studies showing the active channel of the FALS mutant is slightly larger than that of the wild-type enzyme; thus, it is more accessible to H2O2. This gain-of-function, in part, may provide an explanation for the association between ALS and Cu,Zn-SOD mutants.

This paper presents a review on the use of tethered nitroxide–fluorophore molecules as probes of oxidative change and free radical generation and reaction. The proximity of the nitroxide free radical to the fluorophore suppresses the normal fluorescence emission process. Nitroxide free radical scavenging, metabolism or redox chemistry return the system to its natural fluorescent state and so these tethered nitroxide–fluorophore molecules are described as being profluorescent. A survey of profluorescent nitroxides found in the literature is provided as well as background on the mechanism of action and applications of these compounds as fluorometric probes within the fields of biological, materials and environmental sciences.

In this communication we provide the most recent results on RAFT-mediated ring-closing polymerization of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC). The polymerization was carried out in aqueous solution employing 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine)-dihydrochloride as the free radical initiator and trithiocarbonate RAFT agent (2-{[(dodecylsulfanyl)carbonothioyl sulfanyl]}propanoic acid, DoPAT) as the controlling RAFT agent. The results show that – while the system is not as completely controlled as previously described – it is nevertheless possible to mediate the polymerization of DADMAC and impart some living characteristics onto the system. The initial study on the RAFT-mediated polymerization of DADMAC may have overestimated the degree of livingness within this reaction. However, it is possible – at low conversions – for some living characteristics to be observed, as the evolution of molecular weight with conversion is linear. In addition, polymers with a reasonably narrow polydispersity can be isolated.

A unique phenomenon of ‘autoacceleration’ was observed in a free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and oxygen. Unlike the well known autoacceleration phenomenon in polymerization processes, this unusual phenomenon is not readily conceivable in terms of solution viscosity based reasoning. Surprisingly, we have observed manifestation of this new autoacceleration during free radical oxidative polymerization of some vinyl monomers at low conversions, where generally the polymerization reaction is zero order, the conversion–time plot are linear and viscosity effects are negligible. In the present paper, we interpret the mechanism of this new autoacceleration phenomenon on the basis of reactivity of the propagating radicals in terms of heat of formation data.

Typical image-guided diffuse optical tomographic image reconstruction procedures involve reduction of the number of optical parameters to be reconstructed equal to the number of distinct regions identified in the structural information provided by the traditional imaging modality. This makes the image reconstruction problem less ill-posed compared to traditional underdetermined cases. Still, the methods that are deployed in this case are same as those used for traditional diffuse optical image reconstruction, which involves a regularization term as well as computation of the Jacobian. A gradient-free Nelder-Mead simplex method is proposed here to perform the image reconstruction procedure and is shown to provide solutions that closely match ones obtained using established methods, even in highly noisy data. The proposed method also has the distinct advantage of being more efficient owing to being regularization free, involving only repeated forward calculations. Generally, adjustment of gravity equilibrator to a new payload requires energy, e.g. to increase the pre-load of the balancing spring. A novel way of energy-free adjustment of gravity equilibrators is possible by introducing the concept of a storage spring. The storage spring supplies or stores the energy necessary to adjust the balancer spring of the gravity equilibrator. In essence the storage spring mechanism maintains a constant potential energy within the spring mechanism; energy is exchanged between the storage and balancer spring when needed. Various conceptual designs using both zero-free-length springs and regular extension springs are proposed. Two models were manufactured demonstrating the practical embodiments and functionality.
