La técnica de producción en Floating system constituye una alternativa económica y veloz de producción en hidroponia. Este sistema permite obtener hojas de vegetales de pequeño tamaño “Baby leaf” listas para consumir (IV Gama), cuyo consumo a nivel mundial muestra una tendencia creciente. Dicha técnica no se encuentra aún muy difundida para la producción de radicchio rosso. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del tamaño de celda, del substrato y de la técnica de floating system sobre la producción de radicchio. Los ensayos se realizaron en cámara a 25 ºC con un fotoperíodo de 16 hs de luz y 8 de oscuridad y con una intensidad de luz de 10 000 Lux. Se utilizó un diseño experimental factorial totalmente aleatorizado, con 5 repeticiones y 3 factores, cuyos niveles fueron: 1) Tamaño de celda, (T), con 3 niveles: grande, mediano y pequeño, 2) Técnica de producción, (F), con 2 niveles: floating system y sistema convencional, 3) Sustrato, (S), con 2 niveles: vermiculita y mezcla. Se analizaron las siguientes variables: 1) peso fresco, 2) peso seco, 3) largo de planta, 4) número de hojas y 5) área foliar. Los resultados obtenidos resultan alentadores respecto del empleo de la técnica de floating system. Para la obtención de plántulas con calidad de IV Gama resulta más conveniente el empleo de celdas de 80 cm3 y sustrato mezcla.

The investigation was conducted under greenhouse conditions at UNESP, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of the commercial substrates Plantmax and Sunshine and its mixtures with charred rice hulls, and the effects of floating and conventional seedling production systems in lettuce cultivation. The experiment was a randomized block experimental design, in 4 x 4 factorial treatment arrangement with two replications. Seedlings produced in the floating system were more precocious in relation to the conventional system. From transplant to harvest, the seedling production systems had similar mean time of production.

The dynamic analysis of a deepwater floating platform and the associated mooring/riser system should ideally be fully coupled to ensure a reliable response prediction. It is generally held that a time domain analysis is the only means of capturing the various coupling and nonlinear effects accurately. However, in recent work it has been found that for an ultra-deepwater floating system (2000m water depth), the highly efficient frequency domain approach can provide highly accurate response predictions. One reason for this is the accuracy of the drag linearization procedure over both first and second order motions, another reason is the minimal geometric nonlinearity displayed by the mooring lines in deepwater. In this paper, the aim is to develop an efficient analysis method for intermediate water depths, where both mooring/vessel coupling and geometric nonlinearity are of importance. It is found that the standard frequency domain approach is not so accurate for this case and two alternative methods are investigated. In the first, an enhanced frequency domain approach is adopted, in which line nonlinearities are linearized in a systematic way. In the second, a hybrid approach is adopted in which the low frequency motion is solved in the time domain while the high frequency motion is solved in the frequency domain; the two analyses are coupled by the fact that (i) the low frequency motion affects the mooring line geometry for the high frequency motion, and (ii) the high frequency motion affects the drag forces which damp the low frequency motion. Grande parte do sucesso de uma cultura está em implantá-la com mudas de alta qualidade. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar métodos de formação de mudas de maracujazeiro amarelo quanto à qualidade das muda formada. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: 1- Mudas formadas em sacolas plásticas, preenchidas com terra adubada e misturada com esterco de curral curtido, com fertirrigação uma vez por semana; 2- Mudas formadas em tubetes de plástico rígido, com substrato à base de casca de pinus e vermiculita, mantidos em bancada e recebendo fertirrigação uma vez por semana; 3- Idêntico ao tratamento 2, utilizando-se bandejas de poliestireno expandido; 4- Idêntico ao tratamento 3, sem fertirrigação, mas com uso de floating a cada dois dias; 5- Idêntico ao tratamento 4, com o uso de floating todo o período. O delineamento experimental foi completamente aleatorizado, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Na casa de vegetação, cada parcela foi composta por 64 plantas, sendo avaliadas semanalmente em oito plantas por parcela as seguintes variáveis: altura da planta; comprimento da raiz; matéria seca da parte aérea; matéria seca da parte radicular. O restante das mudas foi levado a campo para determinação da percentagem de pegamento e análise do desenvolvimento vegetativo inicial. Neste segundo estágio, cada parcela foi composta por cinco plantas. Sob casa de vegetação, o tratamento 5 apresentou os maiores valores para todas as variáveis, exceto para comprimento de raiz, onde houve superioridade do tratamento 1. em campo, observou-se 100% de pegamento para todos os tratamentos, sendo que o tratamento 5 apresentou as maiores médias para altura de plantas.

In order to overcome the interference of the model mounting system with the external aerodynamics of the body during shock tunnel testing, a new free floating internally mountable balance system that ensures unrestrained model motion during testing has been designed, fabricated and tested. Minimal friction ball bearings are used for ensuring the free floating condition of the model during tunnel testing. The drag force acting on a blunt leading edge flat plate at hypersonic Mach number has been measured using the new balance system. Finite element model (FEM) and CFD are exhaustively used in the design as well as for calibrating the new balance system. The experimentally measured drag force on the blunt leading edge flat plate at stagnation enthalpy of 0.7 and 1.2 MJ/kg and nominal Mach number of 5.75 matches well with FEM results. The concept can also be extended for measuring all the three fundamental aerodynamic forces in short duration test facilities like free piston driven shock tunnels.

The steady and axisymmetric crystal growth process of floating zone model was studied numerically to concern with the influence of convection and phase change on effective segregation. An iteration method of numerical simulation considering both thermocapillary and buoyancy effects for GaAs crystal growth gave the effective segregation coefficient, which was compared with the space experiment of GaAs on board the Chinese recoverable satellite. The calculated segregation coefficient of a two-dimensional model was found to be smaller than the one suggested by space experiment with the simplified assumption of an one-dimensional model.

We discussed a floating mechanism based on quasi-magnetic levitation method that can be attached at the endpoint of a robot arm in order to construct a novel redundant robot arm for producing compliant motions. The floating mechanism can be composed of magnets and a constraint mechanism such that the repelling force of the magnets floats the endpoint part of the mechanism stable for the guided motions. The analytical and experimental results show that the proposed floating mechanism can produce stable floating motions with small inertia and viscosity. The results also show that the proposed mechanism can detect small force applied to the endpoint part because the friction force of the mechanism is very small.

A new methodology for tree seedling production (Aquaforest system) based on a continuous floating subirrigation system was developed and tested using creeks with different nutrient levels. Eucalyptus grandis seedlings were produced in water from polluted and clean creeks, and compared to conventional tree nursery production. The growth variables analyzed in the seedling phase were: survival, height, diameter, shoot and root dry weight, leaf area, and root/shoot ratio. Water and substrate were analyzed, as well as leaf nutritional status. Plant survival was 100% in all treatments. Height and diameter were greater in the higher nutrient water treatment. Leaf area and dry weight of plants produced in the higher nutrient water treatment were similar to those of the control. The results showed that polluted water can represent a good nutrient source. The preliminary results show that the Aquaforest system can be a viable alternative for tree seedling production. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Galway Bay wave energy test site promises to be a vital resource for wave energy researchers and developers. As part of the development of this site, a floating power system is being developed to provide power and data acquisition capabilities, including its function as a local grid connection, allowing for the connection of up to three wave energy converter devices. This work shows results from scaled physical model testing and numerical modelling of the floating power system and an oscillating water column connected with an umbilical. Results from this study will be used to influence further scaled testing as well as the full scale design and build of the floating power system in Galway Bay.

The floating-zone method with different growth ambiences has been used to selectively obtain hexagonal or orthorhombic DyMnO3 single crystals. The crystals were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction of ground specimens and a structure refinement as well as electron diffraction. We report magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat studies of this multiferroic compound in both the hexagonal and the orthorhombic structure. The hexagonal DyMnO3 shows magnetic ordering of Mn3+ (S = 2) spins on a triangular Mn lattice at T-N(Mn) = 57 K characterized by a cusp in the specific heat. This transition is not apparent in the magnetic susceptibility due to the frustration on the Mn triangular lattice and the dominating paramagnetic susceptibility of the Dy3+ (S = 9/2) spins. At T-N(Dy) = 3 K, a partial antiferromagnetic order of Dy moments has been observed. In comparison, the magnetic data for orthorhombic DyMnO3 display three transitions. The data broadly agree with results from earlier neutron diffraction experiments, which allows for the following assignment: a transition from an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of Mn3+ spins at T-N(Mn) = 39 K, a lock-in transition at Tlock-in = 16 K and a second antiferromagnetic transition at T-N(Dy) = 5 K due to the ordering of Dy moments. Both the hexagonal and the orthorhombic crystals show magnetic anisotropy and complex magnetic properties due to 4f-4f and 4f-3d couplings.

A multilevel inverter topology for seven-level space vector generation is proposed in this paper. In this topology, the seven-level structure is realized using two conventional two-level inverters and six capacitor-fed H-bridge cells. It needs only two isolated dc-voltage sources of voltage rating V(dc)/2 where V(dc) is the dc voltage magnitude required by the conventional neutral point clamped (NPC) seven-level topology. The proposed topology is capable of maintaining the H-bridge capacitor voltages at the required level of V(dc)/6 under all operating conditions, covering the entire linear modulation and overmodulation regions, by making use of the switching state redundancies. In the event of any switch failure in H-bridges, this inverter can operate in three-level mode, a feature that enhances the reliability of the drive system. The two-level inverters, which operate at a higher voltage level of V(dc)/2, switch less compared to the H-bridges, which operate at a lower voltage level of V(dc)/6, resulting in switching loss reduction. The experimental verification of the proposed topology is carried out for the entire modulation range, under steady state as well as transient conditions.

Dodecagonal (12-sided) space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) schemes are characterized by the complete absence of (6n +/- 1)th-order harmonics (for odd n) in the phase voltages, within the linear modulation range and beyond, including over-modulation. This paper presents a new topology suitable for the realization of such multilevel inverter schemes for induction motor (IM) drives, by cascading two-level inverters with flying-capacitor-inverter fed floating H-bridge cells. Now, any standard IM may be used to get the dodecagonal operation which hitherto was possible only with open-end winding IM. To minimize the current total harmonic distortion (THD), a strategy for synchronous PWM is also proposed. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of obtaining better THD figures, compared to conventional dodecagonal schemes. The topology and the PWM strategy are validated through analysis and subsequently verified experimentally.

A two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model is presented to study the influence of local magnetic fields on P-doped Si floating zone melting crystal growth in microgravity. The model is developed based on the finite difference method in a boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system. Extensive numerical simulations are carried out, and parameters studied include the curved growth interface shape and the magnetic field configurations. Computed results show that the local magnetic field is more effective in reducing the impurity concentration nonuniformity at the growth interface in comparison with the longitudinal magnetic field. Moreover, the curved growth interface causes more serious impurity concentration nonuniformity at the growth interface than the case with a planar growth interface.
