First-principles scalar relativistic calculations in supercells of 16 atoms are used to represent disordered B2 ordering of Fe(3)Ga in order to observe the effect of Ga-Ga pairs on the electronic structure of this alloy. From a comparison with pure bcc Fe it is observed that the energy position and occupation of e(g) and t(2g) states are largely affected by the Ga-Ga pairs and strengthened intraplane interactions takes place. The results show that a larger hybridization of the conduction band is in the source of the magnetostriction enhancement experimentally observed in Galfenol. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. The longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction and microstructure of polycrystalline Fe(100-x)Ge(x) (x= 8, 12, 15, 20) alloys were investigated in order to correlate the magnetostriction with microstructure. In order to obtain different microstructures in the Fe(100-x)Ge(x) alloys, the samples were annealed at 600 degrees C during 2 h and at 1150 degrees C for half hour and then quenched in cold water. For Ge concentrations lower than 14 at.%, the longitudinal magnetostriction is positive and increases positively up to 22 ppm at 12 at.% Ge then decreases and vanishes at about 14 at.% Ge. For further Ge concentration increase the longitudinal magnetostriction is negative and reaches -30 ppm for Fe(80)Ge(20). This behavior, that is very similar to that reported for Fe-Si alloys, is explained by the structural changes caused by different thermal histories of the alloys. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B. A set of stacked ribbon samples with the compositions Fe(85)Ga(15), Fe(78)Ni(7)Ga(15) and Fe(78)Co(7)Ga(15) were prepared. XRD on these ribbons show that the binary Fe(85)Ga(15) ribbon exhibits the disordered A2 structure where as the addition of Co and Ni leads to the appearance of an additional ordered DO(3) structure. A comparison of the ratio of the XRD-line intensities gave strong evidence of a (100) texture perpendicular to the ribbon surface. The optical studied microstructure supports these results because it shows a columnar grain growth parallel to the solidification direction-which is parallel to ribbon thickness. The highest magnetostriction was found for Fe(78)Ni(7)Ga(15) (370 ppm), while the Fe(78)Co(7)Ga(15) a smaller magnetostriction of 270 ppm was found. The enhancement of the magnetostriction is attributed to the (100) texture in these ribbons. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work we study the magnetostriction of Fe(91)Sn(9) and Fe(80)Sn(20) polycrystalline samples produced by arc melting and heat treated at temperatures of 1153 K for 6 h and 1023 K for 24 h, looking for high values of magnetostriction as in Fe-Ga alloys. Magnetostriction, as well as saturation magnetization measurements, was carried out at temperatures close to 203 K in the magnetic field interval 0 to 1.5 T. Results of magnetostriction on sample Fe(91)Sn(9), which has almost pure alpha-phase, show magnitude and behavior similar to pure Fe. The two additional Fe(80)Sn(20) samples have a combination of alpha-phase plus either Fe(5)Sn(3) or Fe(3)Sn(2) and show a peculiar behavior of the magnetostriction for mu(0)H < 0.3 T the magnetostriction grows from zero to saturation of the alpha-phase. Following, for mu(0)H > 0.3 T, the magnetostriction starts again to grow linearly with the field, but saturation was not observed up to 5 T. This behavior was attributed to the presence of Fe(5)Sn(3) or Fe(3)Sn(2) phases in these samples that are also ferromagnetic as the alpha-phase is. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fe(100-x)Ti(x) alloys (x = 10, 15, 20) were studied with respect to their microstructure and magnetostriction. Depending on heat treatment temperature and composition, the sample retained either the alpha-phase (A2 structure) or the alpha-phase plus the TiFe(2) Laves phase (C14 structure). The saturation magnetostriction measured at 238K is negative, about -11 ppm. However, for fields up to 0.4 T the magnetostriction is barely zero, a very interesting result. High values of magnetostriction are of interest for applications mainly in sensors and actuators, but zero magnetostriction is also a remarkable property, desirable for many applications such as electric transformers and fluxgate sensor cores. Therefore, the Fe(100-x)Ti(x) (x < 20 at%) are an attractive option to be considered for these applications.

Longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction measurements were performed on polycrystalline Fe(100-x)Ti(x) alloys, for a large Ti concentration range, from x = 8.8 to 34.7 at.%. Our results showed that substituting Fe by Ti does not significantly enhance the magnetostriction. For all Ti concentrations in the magnetically saturated state, the longitudinal magnetostriction values vary from -2 x 10(-6) to 6 x 10(-6). On the other hand, Fe(100-x)Ti(x) alloys exhibit a large forced volume magnetostriction, which increases with increasing Ti-concentration. The magnetostriction behavior could be explained considering investigations of the hyteresis loops and the microstructure.

This research is part of a project whose scope was to investigate the engineering properties of new non-commercial alloy formulations based on the Cu rich corner of the Cu-Fe-Cr ternary system with the primary aim of exploring the development of a new cost-effective high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloy. The literature indicated that Cu rich Cu-Cr and Cu-Fe alloys have been thoroughly investigated. A number of commercial alloys have been developed and these are used for a variety of applications requiring combinations of high-strength, high-conductivity and resistance to softening. Little evidence was found in the literature that the Cu rich corner of the Cu-Fe-Cr system had previously been investigated for the purpose of developing high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloys resistant to softening. The aim of these present investigations was to explore the possibility that new alloys could be developed that combined the properties of both sets of alloys, ie large precipitation hardening response combined with the ability to stabilise cold worked microstructures to high temperatures while at the same maintain high electrical conductivity. To assess the feasibility of this goal the following alloys were chosen for investigation: Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe, Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.8wt%Fe, Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe. This paper reports on the mechanical property investigation which indicated that the Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe, and Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe alloys were worthy of further investigation. Promising properties have been measured for the following alloys: Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe and Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe. This paper reports on the microstructural characterisation of these alloys and discusses the mechanical and electrical properties of these alloys in terms of their microstructure, particularly the formation of precipitates. These alloys have evinced properties that warrant further investigation. Cost modelling has shown that Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe is approximately 25% cheaper to produce than commercial Cu-1%Cr. It has also been shown to be more cost efficient on a yield stress and % IACS per dollar basis. The reason for the cost saving is that the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy can be made with low carbon ferro-chrome additions as the source of chromium rather than the more expensive Cu-Cr master-alloy. For applications in which cost is one of the primary materials selection criteria, it is envisaged that there would be numerous applications in both cast and wrought form, where the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy would be more suitable than Cu-1%Cr. The aim of the present work was to increase the electrical conductivity and strength of the Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe alloy through selective minor additions (less than or equal to0.15 wt%) of elements expected to promote precipitation of dissolved Fe: Ti, B, P, Ni & Y. Such quaternary alloys with reduced Fe in solid solution would be expected to have properties equivalent to or better than those of the Cu-1%Cr reference alloy (Alloy Z). The investigation showed that none of the trace element additions significantly improved the size of the age hardening response or the peak aged electrical conductivity of Alloy A, although further work is required on the influence of Ti. Additions of P and B were detrimental. Other trace additions had little or no effect apart from causing some slight changes to the precipitation kinetics. The mechanical properties of the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy made with less expensive high carbon ferrochrome were found to be inferior to those of the equivalent alloy made with low carbon ferrochrome. The aim of this project was to investigate the properties of copper rich Cu-Fe-Cr alloys for the purpose of developing a new cost effective, high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloy. This paper reports on the influence of cold work. The age hardening response of the Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe alloy was minimal, but the resistance to softening was superior to that reported for any commercial high-strength, high-conductivity (HSHC) copper alloy with comparable mechanical and electrical properties. For example, an excess of 85% of the original hardness of the 40% cold worked alloy is retained after holding at 700 degreesC for 1 hour, whereas commercial HSHC Cu-Fe-P alloys have been reported to soften significantly after 1 hours exposure at less than 500 degreesC. The Cu-0.7Cr-2.0Fe alloy would therefore be expected to be more suitable for applications with a significant risk of exposure to elevated temperatures. Optical microscope examination of cold worked and aged microstructures confirmed the high resistance to recrystallization for Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe. The Zener-Smith drag term, predicting the pinning effect of second phase particles on dislocations in cold worked microstructures, was calculated using the precipitate characteristics obtained from TEM, WDS and resistivity measurements. The pinning effect of the precipitate dispersions in the peak-aged condition was determined to be essentially equivalent for the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe and Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe alloys. A lower recrystallisation temperature in the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy was therefore attributed to faster coarsening kinetics of the secondary precipitates resulting from a higher Cr concentration in the precipitates at lower iron content. The TA2 phonon dispersion curves of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys with different compositions which transform to different martensitic structures have been measured over a broad temperature range covering both paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The branches show an anomaly (dip) at a wave number that depends on the particular martensitic structure, and there is softening of these anomalous phonons with decreasing temperature. This softening is enhanced below the Curie point, as a consequence of spin-phonon coupling. This effect is stronger for systems with higher electronic concentration.

The magnetocaloric effect that originates from the martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Gashape-memory alloy is studied. We show that this effect is controlled by the magnetostructural coupling at boththe martensitic variant and magnetic domain length scales. A large entropy change induced by moderatemagnetic fields is obtained for alloys in which the magnetic moment of the two structural phases is not verydifferent. We also show that this entropy change is not associated with the entropy difference between themartensitic and the parent phase arising from the change in the crystallographic structure which has beenfound to be independent of the magnetic field within this range of fields.

The kinetics of crystallization of four amorphous (or partially amorphous) melt spun Nd-Fe-B alloys induced by thermal treatment is studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, In the range of temperatures explored experimentally, the crystallization process is thermally activated and generally proceeds in various stages. The Curie temperature and the crystallization behavior have been measured. The apparent activation energy of crystallization of most of the crystallization stages has been determined for each melt spun alloy. The explicit form of the kinetic equation that best describes the first stage of crystallization has been found. It follows in general the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Erofe'ev model, but clear deviations to that model occur for one alloy. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrates that preferentially hetereogeneous nucleation occurs at the ribbon surface which was in contact with the wheel. From crystallization kinetics results the lower part of the experimental time-temperature-transformation curves for all studied alloys are deduced and extrapolated to the high temperature limit of their range of validity, also deduced.
