In the present work the benefits of using graphics processing units (GPU) to aid the design of complex geometry profile extrusion dies, are studied. For that purpose, a3Dfinite volume based code that employs unstructured meshes to solve and couple the continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations governing the fluid flow, together with aconstitutive equation, was used. To evaluate the possibility of reducing the calculation time spent on the numerical calculations, the numerical code was parallelized in the GPU, using asimple programing approach without complex memory manipulations. For verificationpurposes, simulations were performed for three benchmark problems: Poiseuille flow, lid-driven cavity flow and flow around acylinder. Subsequently, the code was used on the design of two real life extrusion dies for the production of a medical catheter and a wood plastic composite decking profile. To evaluate the benefits, the results obtained with the GPU parallelized code were compared, in terms of speedup, with a serial implementation of the same code, that traditionally runs on the central processing unit (CPU). The results obtained show that, even with the simple parallelization approach employed, it was possible to obtain a significant reduction of the computation times.

[Extrat] Thermoplastic profiles are very attractive due to their inherent design freedom. However, the usual methodologies employed to design extrusion forming tools, based on experimental based trial–and–error procedures, are highly dependent on the designer’s experience and lead to high resources consumption. Despite of the relatively low cost of the raw materials employed on the production of this type of profiles, the resources involved in the die design process significantly increase their cost. These difficulties are even more evident when a complex geometry profile has to be produced and there is no previous experience with similar geometries. Therefore, novel design approaches are required, in order to reduce the required resources and guarantee a good performance for the produced profile. (...)

An extrusion die is used to continuously produce parts with a constant cross section; such as sheets, pipes, tire components and more complex shapes such as window seals. The die is fed by a screw extruder when polymers are used. The extruder melts, mixes and pressures the material by the rotation of either a single or double screw. The polymer can then be continuously forced through the die producing a long part in the shape of the die outlet. The extruded section is then cut to the desired length. Generally, the primary target of a well designed die is to produce a uniform outlet velocity without excessively raising the pressure required to extrude the polymer through the die. Other properties such as temperature uniformity and residence time are also important but are not directly considered in this work. Designing dies for optimal outlet velocity variation using simple analytical equations are feasible for basic die geometries or simple channels. Due to the complexity of die geometry and of polymer material properties design of complex dies by analytical methods is difficult. For complex dies iterative methods must be used to optimize dies. An automated iterative method is desired for die optimization. To automate the design and optimization of an extrusion die two issues must be dealt with. The first is how to generate a new mesh for each iteration. In this work, this is approached by modifying a Parasolid file that describes a CAD part. This file is then used in a commercial meshing software. Skewing the initial mesh to produce a new geometry was also employed as a second option. The second issue is an optimization problem with the presence of noise stemming from variations in the mesh and cumulative truncation errors. In this work a simplex method and a modified trust region method were employed for automated optimization of die geometries. For the trust region a discreet derivative and a BFGS Hessian approximation were used. To deal with the noise in the function the trust region method was modified to automatically adjust the discreet derivative step size and the trust region based on changes in noise and function contour. Generally uniformity of velocity at exit of the extrusion die can be improved by increasing resistance across the die but this is limited by the pressure capabilities of the extruder. In optimization, a penalty factor that increases exponentially from the pressure limit is applied. This penalty can be applied in two different ways; the first only to the designs which exceed the pressure limit, the second to both designs above and below the pressure limit. Both of these methods were tested and compared in this work.

The design of plastics profile extrusion dies becomes increasingly more complex so that conventional manufacture processes reach their limit in the die manufacture. A feasible manufacture of arbitrarily designed dies is only possible by additive manufacturing. An especially promising process is hereby the Selective Laser Melting with which metal parts with series identical mechanical properties can be produced without the need for part specific tooling or downstream sintering processes. Disadvantegeous is, however, the relatively rough surface of additively manufactured parts. Against this background, the manufacturing of an profile extrusion die by Selective Laser Melting and the plastics profile surface quality, that can be achieved with such dies, is investigated. For this purpose, profiles are extruded both with an additively manufactured die and a conventionally milled sample of the same die geometry. In case of the additively manufactured die a concept for the surface finishing of the flow channel is required, which can be applied to arbitrarily shaped geometries. Therefore, two different reworking processes are applied only to the die land of the flow channel. The comparison of the surface roughnesses shows that the additively manufactured die with a polished die land delivers the same surface quality as the conventional die.

In this work, the optimization of an extrusion die designed for the production of a wood–plastic composite (WPC) decking profile is investigated. The optimization was performed with the help of numerical tools, more precisely, by solving the continuity and momentum conservation equations that govern such flow, and aiming to balance properly the flow distribution at the extrusion die flow channel outlet. To capture the rheological behavior of the material, we used a Bird-Carreau model with parameters obtained from a fit to the (shear viscosity versus shearrate) experimental data, collected from rheological tests. To yield a balanced output flow, several numerical runs were performed by adjusting the flow restriction at different regions of the flow-channel parallel zone crosssection. The simulations were compared with the experimental results and an excellent qualitative agreement was obtained, allowing, in this way, to attain a good balancing of the output flow and emphasizing the advantages of using numerical tools to aid the design of profile extrusion dies.

Bovine rumen protein with two levels of residual lipids (1.9 per cent or 3.8 per cent) was subjected to thermoplastic extrusion under different temperatures and moisture contents. Protein solubility in different buffers, disulphide cross-linking and molecular weight distribution were determined on the extrudates. After extrusion, samples with 1.9 per cent residual lipids content had a higher concentration of protein insoluble by undetermined forces, irrespective of feed moisture and processing temperature used. Lipid content of 3.8 per cent in the feed material resulted in more protein participating in the extrudate network through non-covalent interactions (hydrophobic and electrostatic) and disulphide bonds. A small dependency of the extrusion process on moisture and temperature and a marked dependency on lipid content, especially phospholipid, was observed, Electrophoresis under non-reducing conditions showed that protein extrusion with low feed moisture promoted high molecular breakdown inside the barrel, probably due to intense shear force, and further protein aggregation at the die end

Natural fibers used in this study were both pre-treated and modified residues from sugarcane bagasse. Polymer of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was employed as matrix in to composites, which were prodUced by mixing high density polyethylene with cellulose (10%) and Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%), using an extruder and hydraulic press. Tensile tests showed that the Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%)/HDPE composites present better tensile strength than cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. Cellulose agglomerations were responsible for poor adhesion between fiber and matrix in cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. HDPF/natural fibers composites showed also lower tensile strength in comparison to the polymer. The increase in Young`s modulus is associated to fibers reinforcement. SEM analysis showed that the cellulose fibers insertion in the matrix Caused all increase of defects, which were reduced When modified cellulose fibers were Used. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Development and Characterization of L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine Containing Pellets employing Extrusion-Spheronization Method and Drying Process in Fluidized Bad Equipment"". In this work, five formulations of L-alanyl-L-glutamine (glutamine dipeptide) containing pellets with different drug concentration were developed and evaluated: F1 (9.07%); F2 (17.70%); F3 (27.98%); F4 (37.74%) e F5 (47.53%). Pellets were prepared by extrusion-spheronization method and, further, dried in fluidized bad equipment. The following assays were carried out with the batches obtained: granulometry, friability, true density and morphologic analysis. Between the five formulations evaluated, pellets obtained from F3 present best yield (75.80%), most uniform particle size distribution (89.67% of pellets with size in the range of 0.80 to 1.18), most high true density (2.1634 g/ml) and best aspect (1.0795 +/- 0.0410). Due to these features, pellets obtained from F3 were considered adequate to further polymeric coating process in order to produce a multiparticulate system to prolong L-alanyl-L-glutamine release.

The aim this work was develop gastro-resistant pellets of didanosine as well as study the impact on the pellets properties, regarding the way as the binder was added and drying process used. The pellets formation was accompanied by analysis of morphological parameters and didanosine dissolution. In the most cases, pellets showed diameter around 1.0 mm and shape parameters acceptable. The variations of the process did not interfere significantly in pellets size. In turn, drying in fluid bed favored the dissolution of didanosine, in contrast to binder addition on powder form that impaired. In another hand, this last resulted in the best aspect factor (about 1.1). Gastro-resistant pellets showed adequate dissolution, compatible with this type of dosage form. The variables of process studied enabled obtain pellets with characteristics of shape and dissolution just slightly different, indicating flexibility of the formulation for production of gastro-resistant pellets of didanosine.

Two species of Antarctic fish were stressed by moving them from seawater at -1 degrees C to seawater at 10 degrees C and holding them for a period of 10 min. The active cryopelagic species Pagothenia borchgrevinki maintained heart rate while in the benthic species Trematomus bernacchii there was an increase in heart rate. Blood pressure did not change in either species. Both species released catecholamines into the circulation as a consequence of the stress. P. borchgrevinki released the greater amounts, having mean plasma concentrations of 177 +/- 54 nmol.l(-1) noradrenaline and 263 +/- 131 nmol.l(-1) adrenaline at 10 min. Pla.sma noradrenaline concentrations rose to 47 +/- 14 nmol.l(-1) and adrenaline to 73 +/- 28 nmol.l(-1) in T. bernacchii. Blood from P. borchgrevinki was tonometered in the presence of isoprenaline. A fall in extracellular pH suggests the presence of a Na+/H+ antiporter on the red cell membrane, the first demonstration of this in an Antarctic fish. Treatment with the beta-adrenergic antagonist drug sotalol inhibited swelling of red blood cells taken from temperature-stressed P. borchgrevinki, suggesting that the antiporter responds to endogenous catecholamines.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the root surfaces of teeth submitted to orthodontic and surgical extrusion procedures in a dog model. Eighteen adult male dogs, divided into six groups of three dogs each, were used in the study Each animal underwent two procedures: rapid orthodontic extrusion and surgical extrusion of the maxillary lateral incisors. The animals were sacrificed to produce samples at 7, 14, 45, 90, 120, and 180 days after surgery for assessment of cross sections of the coronal, medial, and apical thirds of the treated teeth. At early time points, some active surface and inflammatory resorption was observed exclusively in the surgical extrusion group; however, samples collected at later times demonstrated functional repair of the resorption gaps in both groups. Ankylosis was observed as a minor event and was apparently of a transient nature in samples of the surgical extrusion group. The results demonstrate the importance of maintaining the periodontal ligament and cementum surface; both are vital for the prevention of root resorption. It may be postulated that orthodontic extrusion is more conservative and physiologic than surgical extrusion; however the results showed that function was restored in both groups. However, media containing hemin restored the aerobic growth of an H+-ATPase-negative mutant, suggesting that hemin complements proton extrusion. We show that inverted membrane vesicles prepared from hemin-grown L. lactis cells are capable of coupling NADH oxidation to proton translocation.

Research on the stability of flavours during high temperature extrusion cooking is reviewed. The important factors that affect flavour and aroma retention during the process of extrusion are illustrated. A substantial number of flavour volatiles which are incorporated prior to extrusion are normally lost during expansion, this is because of steam distillation. Therefore, a general practice has been to introduce a flavour mix after the extrusion process. This extra operation requires a binding agent (normally oil), and may also result in a non-uniform distribution of the flavour and low oxidative stability of the flavours exposed on the surface. Therefore, the importance of encapsulated flavours, particularly the beta -cyclodextrin-flavour complex, is highlighted in this paper.
