Research in psychology has reported that, among the variety of possibilities for assessment methodologies, summary evaluation offers a particularly adequate context for inferring text comprehension and topic understanding. However, grades obtained in this methodology are hard to quantify objectively. Therefore, we carried out an empirical study to analyze the decisions underlying human summary-grading behavior. The task consisted of expert evaluation of summaries produced in critically relevant contexts of summarization development, and the resulting data were modeled by means of Bayesian networks using an application called Elvira, which allows for graphically observing the predictive power (if any) of the resultant variables. Objective To synthesise recent research on the use of machine learning approaches to mining textual injury surveillance data. Design Systematic review. Data sources The electronic databases which were searched included PubMed, Cinahl, Medline, Google Scholar, and Proquest. The bibliography of all relevant articles was examined and associated articles were identified using a snowballing technique. Selection criteria For inclusion, articles were required to meet the following criteria: (a) used a health-related database, (b) focused on injury-related cases, AND used machine learning approaches to analyse textual data. Methods The papers identified through the search were screened resulting in 16 papers selected for review. Articles were reviewed to describe the databases and methodology used, the strength and limitations of different techniques, and quality assurance approaches used. Due to heterogeneity between studies meta-analysis was not performed. Results Occupational injuries were the focus of half of the machine learning studies and the most common methods described were Bayesian probability or Bayesian network based methods to either predict injury categories or extract common injury scenarios. Models were evaluated through either comparison with gold standard data or content expert evaluation or statistical measures of quality. Machine learning was found to provide high precision and accuracy when predicting a small number of categories, was valuable for visualisation of injury patterns and prediction of future outcomes. However, difficulties related to generalizability, source data quality, complexity of models and integration of content and technical knowledge were discussed. Conclusions The use of narrative text for injury surveillance has grown in popularity, complexity and quality over recent years. With advances in data mining techniques, increased capacity for analysis of large databases, and involvement of computer scientists in the injury prevention field, along with more comprehensive use and description of quality assurance methods in text mining approaches, it is likely that we will see a continued growth and advancement in knowledge of text mining in the injury field.

An automated geo-hazard warning system is the need of the hour. It is integration of automation in hazard evaluation and warning communication. The primary objective of this paper is to explain a geo-hazard warning system based on Internet-resident concept and available cellular mobile infrastructure that makes use of geo-spatial data. The functionality of the system is modular in architecture having input, understanding, expert, output and warning modules. Thus, the system provides flexibility in integration between different types of hazard evaluation and communication systems leading to a generalized hazard warning system. The developed system has been validated for landslide hazard in Indian conditions. It has been realized through utilization of landslide causative factors, rainfall forecast from NASA's TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and knowledge base of landslide hazard intensity map and invokes the warning as warranted. The system evaluated hazard commensurate with expert evaluation within 5-6 % variability, and the warning message permeability has been found to be virtually instantaneous, with a maximum time lag recorded as 50 s, minimum of 10 s. So it could be concluded that a novel and stand-alone system for dynamic hazard warning has been developed and implemented. Such a handy system could be very useful in a densely populated country where people are unaware of the impending hazard.

A doença de Alzheimer (DA) afeta mais de um milhão de habitantes no Brasil com grande impacto tanto na saúde como social e financeiro. O uso adequado de medicamentos e os programas de cuidado integrado são recomendados como as melhores práticas nesta doença. Em 2002, o Ministério da Saúde criou o Programa de Assistência Farmacêutica aos Portadores de doença de Alzheimer que garante aos portadores desta patologia acesso à avaliação por especialistas e tratamento medicamentoso de alto custo. Mas, para um melhor planejamento das ações relacionadas ao programa, é importante entender os padrões de morbi-mortalidade da população alvo, qualidade da assistência oferecida e o seu impacto. Com foco nesse cenário, esta tese teve como objetivo o estudo da adesão, mortalidade e sobrevida em uma população portadora de doença de Alzheimer assistida nesse programa de assistência farmacêutica. Para apresentação dessa pesquisa, dividiram-se os resultados em três artigos. No primeiro artigo, o objetivo foi avaliar a viabilidade de se utilizar as informações de reabastecimento de receitas coletadas por esse programa na construção de medidas de adesão, uma metodologia já explorada na literatura internacional, mas com experiência limitada no Brasil. Os dados foram acessados nos formulários de Autorização de Procedimentos de Alto Custo (APAC) armazenados na base de dados do programa de acesso de medicamentos excepcionais do Sistema de Informação Ambulatorial (SIA). Como resultado, foram criadas várias medidas de adesão com potencial aplicação no campo da farmacoepidemiologia e planejamento em saúde. No segundo artigo, o foco foi entender que fatores individuais, terapêuticos ou relacionados à assistência, poderiam estar relacionados com um aumento do risco de abandono do programa. Fatores como o sexo feminino, o número de comorbidades na APAC, o tipo de inibidor de colinesterase iniciado e a irregularidade nos reabastecimentos foram associados a um maior risco de abandono do programa. No terceiro artigo, pelas técnicas de relacionamento probabilístico de base de dados, agregaram-se os dados presentes no Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade (SIM) para avaliação dos padrões de mortalidade desta patologia. Cerca de 40% dos pacientes foram a óbito durante todo o período de seguimento e principal causa básica de mortalidade foi a doença de Alzheimer (19%). Idade mais avançada e sexo masculino foram as únicas variáveis associadas com uma menor sobrevida. A persistência no programa em seis meses e os diferentes níveis de adesão, medidos pela proporção de posse da medicação, não mostraram associação com a sobrevida. Conclui-se que os dados disponíveis nas bases possibilitaram a investigação do padrão de mortalidade e utilização de um programa de assistência na doença de Alzheimer. E, a possibilidade de analisar grandes populações, em caráter contínuo, com medidas objetivas e com um custo relativamente baixo suplanta o caráter limitado das informações individuais e da doença. Políticas que suportem o aumento na disponibilidade, qualidade e escopo da informação e o avanço nas metodologias de pesquisa em bases de dados devem ser uma prioridade da saúde, pois contribuem com a criação de informações relevantes para um uso racional de recursos e melhora nas práticas de cuidado.

Climate change during the last five decades has impacted significantly on natural ecosystems and the rate of current climate change is of great concern among conservation biologists. Species Distribution Models (SDMs) have been used widely to project changes in species’ bioclimatic envelopes under future climate scenarios. Here, we aimed to advance this technique by assessing future changes in the bioclimatic envelopes of an entire mammalian order, the Lagomorpha, using a novel framework for model validation based jointly on subjective expert evaluation and objective model evaluation statistics. SDMs were built using climatic, topographical and habitat variables for all 87 lagomorph species under past and current climate scenarios. Expert evaluation and Kappa values were used to validate past and current models and only those deemed ‘modellable’ within our framework were projected under future climate scenarios (58 species). Phylogenetically-controlled regressions were used to test whether species traits correlated with predicted responses to climate change. Climate change is likely to impact more than two-thirds of lagomorph species, with leporids (rabbits, hares and jackrabbits) likely to undertake poleward shifts with little overall change in range extent, whilst pikas are likely to show extreme shifts to higher altitudes associated with marked range declines, including the likely extinction of Kozlov’s Pika (Ochotona koslowi). Smaller-bodied species were more likely to exhibit range contractions and elevational increases, but showing little poleward movement, and fecund species were more likely to shift latitudinally and elevationally. Our results suggest that species traits may be important indicators of future climate change and we believe multi-species approaches, as demonstrated here, are likely to lead to more effective mitigation measures and conservation management. We strongly advocate studies minimising data gaps in our knowledge of the Order, specifically collecting more specimens for biodiversity archives and targeting data deficient geographic regions.

Au moment où les territoires périurbains se transforment rapidement sous l’impulsion des stratégies de développement de l’industrie immobilière, les préoccupations sociales en matière de qualité des paysages et des cadres de vie se font de plus en plus grandes. Devant ces enjeux, les actions aménagistes privilégient le plus souvent des solutions à partir d’un regard « expert » généralement étranger aux demandes sociales en présence. Devant l’insuffisance des connaissances des regards citoyens, il y a une urgence à développer des méthodes originales aptes à révéler ce savoir local. Une enquête menée à l’automne 2009 à Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, sur la Rive-Sud de Montréal, révèle la pertinence d’une approche anthropologique sous-utilisée et novatrice en particulier pour les recherches en aménagement : celle du « récit-parcours ». Permettant un accès privilégié aux récits ancrés aux lieux de vies, cette méthode a permis de susciter des discours singuliers et collectifs sur le territoire, de révéler des propos sur les imaginaires portés sur la ville et d’offrir un espace d’expression des préoccupations, des valorisations et des aspirations des résidants. Les résultats de l’enquête à cet effet sont concluants : ce que nous révèlent les résidants de par leurs expériences vécues des lieux et leurs cheminements spatiaux est incontestablement riche et pertinent pour la compréhension des enjeux collectifs d’un milieu. Les logiques existantes derrière les transformations de ces territoires bénéficieraient grandement de ce savoir localisé, complexe et ingénieux dont dispose les résidants de la géographie, de l’environnement, de l’urbanisation et des caractéristiques sociales de leur ville. Ce faisant, le territoire change alors de statut : d’un objet d’évaluation experte, il devient une mise en scène dynamique où s’inscrivent des fragments significatifs d’histoires faisant référence à l’expérience du vécu quotidien, mais aussi, à la potentialité des lieux. Par le biais d’une telle démarche et en conjonction avec des méthodes participatives, il devient possible d’engager une véritable réflexion plurielle envers l’avenir des territoires périurbains, en résonance avec les aspirations locales.

Frente a la necesidad de generar propuestas analíticas que abandonen la perspectiva primordialmente jurídica de la problemática de la inseguridad civil, centrada en el debate por más/menos penas, libertad condicional/ encierro prolongado e incorpore nuevos elementos que enriquezcan la mirada sobre esta problemática, la siguiente investigación se propone dar cuenta del funcionamiento de una Asesoría Pericial, en su contribución específica en la designación de la peligrosidad de los acusados. Si se considera la "cuestión criminal" como una construcción social, cabe preguntarse: ¿quién realiza esa construcción? y ¿dentro de qué marco institucional?, ¿cómo se realiza?, ¿en función de qué criterios o parámetros? El juez o fiscal pregunta al perito si el sujeto es o no peligroso, en función de lo cual debería o no quedar en libertad; en este marco se entrelaza el discurso científico con el discurso jurídico, representante éste por excelencia del poder simbólico, poder de nombrar y designar, poder de establecer la mirada legitima sobre el mundo social. Desde esta posición de poder, se decide sobre el destino de las personas, sobre su libertad, sobre su inocencia o culpabilidad. Se pone en el centro de la mirada institucional al acusado, a su familia, a su medio comunitario y social. ¿En qué consiste y en función de qué criterios se construye la categoría "peligrosidad" en el discurso y prácticas de los peritos Asistentes/Trabajadores Sociales?; ¿Cómo se articulan con el discurso jurídico? ¿Existen tensiones entre estos discursos? ¿Qué lugar ocupa la dimensión interpretativa - valorativa en la construcción de las mismas?

Piezoelectric AlN layer grain orientation, grown by room temperature reactive sputtering, is analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Two types of samples are studied: (i) AlN grown on well-polished NCD (nano-crystalline diamond) diamond, (ii) AlN grown on an up-side down NCD layer previously grown on a Si substrate, i.e. diamond surface as smooth as that of Si substrates. The second set of sample show a faster lignment of their AlN grain caxis attributed to it smoother diamond free surface. No grain orientation relationship between diamond substrate grain and the AlN ones is evidenced, which seems to indicate the preponderance role of the surface substrate state.

This research was conducted at the Space Research and Technology Centre o the European Space Agency at Noordvijk in the Netherlands. ESA is an international organisation that brings together a range of scientists, engineers and managers from 14 European member states. The motivation for the work was to enable decision-makers, in a culturally and technologically diverse organisation, to share information for the purpose of making decisions that are well informed about the risk-related aspects of the situations they seek to address. The research examined the use of decision support system DSS) technology to facilitate decision-making of this type. This involved identifying the technology available and its application to risk management. Decision-making is a complex activity that does not lend itself to exact measurement or precise understanding at a detailed level. In view of this, a prototype DSS was developed through which to understand the practical issues to be accommodated and to evaluate alternative approaches to supporting decision-making of this type. The problem of measuring the effect upon the quality of decisions has been approached through expert evaluation of the software developed. The practical orientation of this work was informed by a review of the relevant literature in decision-making, risk management, decision support and information technology. Communication and information technology unite the major the,es of this work. This allows correlation of the interests of the research with European public policy. The principles of communication were also considered in the topic of information visualisation - this emerging technology exploits flexible modes of human computer interaction (HCI) to improve the cognition of complex data. Risk management is itself an area characterised by complexity and risk visualisation is advocated for application in this field of endeavour. The thesis provides recommendations for future work in the fields of decision=making, DSS technology and risk management.

In current organizations, valuable enterprise knowledge is often buried under rapidly expanding huge amount of unstructured information in the form of web pages, blogs, and other forms of human text communications. We present a novel unsupervised machine learning method called CORDER (COmmunity Relation Discovery by named Entity Recognition) to turn these unstructured data into structured information for knowledge management in these organizations. CORDER exploits named entity recognition and co-occurrence data to associate individuals in an organization with their expertise and associates. We discuss the problems associated with evaluating unsupervised learners and report our initial evaluation experiments in an expert evaluation, a quantitative benchmarking, and an application of CORDER in a social networking tool called BuddyFinder.

The interest to small and media size enterprises’ (SMEs) internationalization process is increasing with a growth of SMEs’ contribution to GDP. Internet gives an opportunity to provide variety of services online and reach market niche worldwide. The overlapping of SMEs’ internationalization and online services is the main issue of the research. The most SMEs internationalize according to intuitive decisions of CEO of the company and lose limited resources to worthless attempts. The purpose of this research is to define effective approaches to online service internationalization and selection of the first international market. The research represents single holistic case study of local massive open online courses (MOOCs) platform going global. It considers internationalization costs and internationalization theories applicable to online services. The research includes preliminary screening of the markets and in-depth analysis based on macro parameters of the market and specific characteristics of the customers and expert evaluation of the results. The specific issues as GILT (Globalization, Internationalization, Localization and Translation) approach and Internet-enabled internationalization are considered. The research results include recommendations on international market selection methodology for online services and for effective internationalization strategy development.
