The effects of boron and strontium interactions on the eutectic silicon in hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys have been studied. Samples were prepared from an AI-I 0 mass%Si base alloy with different Al-B additions, alone and in combination with strontium. In alloys containing no strontium, boron additions do not cause modification of the eutectic silicon, while in strontium containing alloys, boron additions reduce the level of modification of the eutectic silicon. Thermal analysis parameters and eutectic silicon microstructures were investigated with respect to the Sr to B ratio. In order to modify the eutectic silicon, a Sr/B ratio exceeding 0.4 is required.

The effects of boron on the eutectic modification and solidification mode of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys have been studied adding different boride phases. The results show that boron does not cause modification of the eutectic silicon. Boron-containing samples display eutectic nucleation and growth characteristics similar to that of unmodified alloys. The effects of different concentrations of individual additions of rare earth metals (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) on eutectic modification in Al-10mass%Si has been studied by thermal analysis and optical microscopy. According to the twin-plane re-entrant edge (TPRE) and impurity induced twinning mechanism, rare earth metals with atomic radii of about 1.65 times larger than that of silicon, are possible candidates for eutectic modification. All of the rare earth elements caused a depression of the eutectic growth temperature, but only Eu modified the eutectic silicon to a fibrous morphology. At best, the remaining elements resulted in only a small degree of refinement of the plate-like silicon. The samples were also quenched during the eutectic arrest to examine the eutectic solidification modes. Many of the rare-earth additions significantly altered the eutectic solidification mode from that of the unmodified alloy. It is concluded that the impurity induced twinning model of modification, based on atomic radius alone, is inadequate and other mechanisms are essential for the modification process. Furthermore, modification and the eutectic nucleation and growth modes are controlled independently of each other.

From recent published data, it is still unclear whether combining additions of Na and Sr have synergistic effects or deleterious interactions, This paper clarifies the interactions between these two modifiers and investigates the effects of such interactions on alloy solidification and castability. It was found that combined additions of Sr and Na do not appear to cause improvement of the modification of the eutectic microstructure even after only a short period after addition. Na addition may promote Sr vaporization and/or oxidation kinetically. leading to a quicker loss of both modifiers, which is blamed for the rapid loss of the modification effect during melt holding. Quenching trials during the eutectic arrest indicate that addition of Sr into Na-modified melts does not alter the eutectic solidification behaviour The effect of Na on eutectic solidification dominates, and the eutectic is observed to evolve with a significant dependency on the thermal gradient, Combining Sr and Na additions produced no beneficial effects on porosity and casting defects. Strontium is the most widely used and a very effective element for modifying the morphology of eutectic silicon, while Ti and B are commonly present in the commercial grain refiners used for Al-Si alloys. Systematic studies on the effects of combined additions of Sr and different AlTiB grain refiners on the Al + Si eutectic and primary aluminium solidification have been performed. While slight coarsening of both eutectic Si and primary aluminium grains occurs during holding, no obvious interactions are observed between Sr and AlTiB grain refiners when the addition level of grain refiners is low. As a result, a well-modified and grain refined structure was obtained. However, strong negative interactions between Sr and Al1.5Ti1.5B3 were observed as the addition level of the grain refiner increases. It was found that these interactions have a much more profound impact on the eutectic solidification than the primary Al solidification. The melt treated with combined additions of Sr and Al1.5Ti1.5B still shows good grain refinement efficiency even after losing its modification completely. The mechanism responsible for such negative interactions is further discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Analysis of intra- and inter-phase distribution of modifying elements in aluminium-silicon alloys is difficult due to the low concentrations used. This research utilises a mu-XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technique at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility X-ray source and reveals that the modifying element strontium segregates exclusively to the eutectic silicon phase and the distribution of strontium within this phase is relatively homogeneous. This has important implications for the fundamental mechanisms of eutectic modification in hypoeutectic aluminium-silicon alloys. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The fracture characteristics of Al-Si based eutectic alloy are investigated in the unmodified and modified conditions under compression. The investigations are carried out at different strain rates and temperatures. Fracture of the alloy starts with eutectic Si particle fracture and modification plays an important role in particle fracture. The fraction of fractured particles is found to be always lesser in the modified condition than in the unmodified condition. Particle fracture increases with increase in strain. It is found that the Si particle fracture shows an increase with increase in strain rate and decreases with increase in temperature at 10% strain. Large and elongated particles show a greater tendency for fracture in the unmodified and modified conditions. Particle orientation plays an important role on fracture and the cracks are found to occur almost in a direction normal to the tensile strain imposed upon the particles by the deforming matrix in the unmodified alloy. The modified alloy shows a random distribution of fractured particles and crack orientation. The criteria of fracture based on dislocation pile-up mechanism and fiber loading explain the observed difference in particle fracture characteristics due to modification. The particle fracture for the modified alloy is also discussed in terms of Weibull statistics and the existing models of dispersion hardening. Particle/matrix interface decohesion is observed at higher strain rates and temperatures in the modified alloy. Dendritic rotation of 10 degrees is also observed at higher strain rates, which can increase the amount of particle fracture. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hypo-eutectic Ti-6.5 wt % Si alloy modified by separate additions of misch metal and low surface tension elements (Na, Sr, Se and Bi) has been examined by microscopic study and thermal analysis. Addition of third element led to modification of microstructure with apparently no significant enhancement of tensile ductility, with the exception of bismuth. Bismuth enhanced the ductility of the alloy by a factor of two and elastic-plastic fracture toughness to 9 MPa m–1/2 from a value of almost zero. The improved ductility of bismuth modified alloy is attributed to the reduced interconnectivity of the eutectic suicide, absence of significant suicide precipitation in the eutectic region and increase in the volume fraction of uniformly distributed dendrites. These changes are accompanied by a decrease in the temperature of eutectic solidification.

The flow characteristics of a near-eutectic heat-treated Al-Si based cast alloy have been examined in compression at strain rates varying from 3 x 10(-4) to 10(2) s(-1) and at three different temperatures, i.e., room temperature (RT), 100 degrees C and 200 degrees C. The dependence of flow behavior on modification is examined by testing the alloy in both the unmodified and modified conditions. Modification has strong influence on strain rate sensitivity (SRS), strength and work hardening behavior of the alloy. The strength of the alloy is found to increase with increase in strain rate for both the conditions. The increase is more rapid above the strain rate of 10(-1) s(-1) for the unmodified alloy at all the temperatures. This rapid increase is observed at 1 s(-1) at RT and 100 degrees C, and at 10(-2) s(-1) at 200 degrees C for the modified alloy. The thermally dependent process of the Al matrix is rate controlling in the unmodified alloy. On the other hand, the thermally dependent process of both Al matrix and Si particles are rate controlling, which is responsible for the higher strain rate sensitivity (SRS) in the modified alloy. The unmodified alloy exhibits a larger work hardening rate than the modified alloy during the initial stages of straining due to fiber loading of unmodified Si particles. However, the hardening rate decreases sharply at higher strains for the unmodified alloy due to a higher rate of Si particle fracture. Thermal softening is observed for both alloys at 200 degrees C due to precipitate coarsening, which leads to a decrease in SRS at higher temperatures. Stress simulations by microstructure based finite element method support the experimentally observed particle and matrix fracture behavior. Negative SRS and serrated flow are observed at lower strain rate regime (3 x 10(-4) to 10(-2) s(-1)) at RT and 100 degrees C, in both alloys. The critical onset strain is found to be lower and the magnitude of serration is found to be higher for the modified alloy, which suggests that, in addition to dynamic strain aging, Si particle size and morphology also play a role in serrated flow. The research activities were focused on evaluating the effect of Mo addition to mechanical properties and microstructure of A354 aluminium casting alloy. Samples, with increasing amount of Mo, were produced and heat treated. After heat treatment and exposition to high temperatures samples underwent microstructural and chemical analyses, hardness and tensile tests. The collected data led to the optimization of both casting parameters, for obtaining a homogeneous Mo distribution in the alloy, and heat treatment parameters, allowing the formation of Mo based strengthening precipitates stable at high temperature. Microstructural and chemical analyses highlighted how Mo addition in percentage superior to 0.1% wt. can modify the silicon eutectic morphology and hinder the formation of iron based β intermetallics. High temperature exposure curves, instead, showed that after long exposition hardness is slightly influenced by heat treatment while the effect of Mo addition superior to 0,3% is negligible. Tensile tests confirmed that the addition of 0.3%wt Mo induces an increase of about 10% of ultimate tensile strength after high temperature exposition (250°C for 100h) while heat treatments have slight influence on mechanical behaviour. These results could be exploited for developing innovative heat treatment sequence able to reduce residual stresses in castings produced with A354 modified with Mo.
