Hostility towards the process of European integration is generally considered to constitute one of the hallmarks of the far right ‘family’ in Europe. This article acknowledges such opposition but it also recognises that the rhetoric is often at odds with actual policy activities and aspirations. Not only have far right parties long advocated greater European inter-party co-operation but they are now actively pursuing engagement with the European Union, especially the European Parliament, as a means of advancing their own strategic interests and boosting their finances. This article focuses on one far right party, namely the British National Party (BNP) and examines the party's approach towards the EU, its activities within the EP and its efforts to boost pan European cooperation through the new Alliance of European National Movements (AENM). It argues that the party's engagement with the European Union may have allowed the BNP to take advantage of new political opportunity structures but in turn, opened it up to Europeanization and made it increasingly dependent on the EU.

This study concerns Framework Directive 89/391/EEC on health and safety at work, which encouraged improvements in occupational health services (OHS) for workers in EU member states. Framework Directive 89/391/EEC originally aimed at bringing the same level of occupational health and safety to employees in both the public and private sectors in EU member states. However, the implementation of the framework directive and OHS varies widely among EU member states. Occupational health services have generally been considered an important work-related welfare benefit in EU member states. The purpose of this study was to analyse OHS within the EU context and then analyse the impact of EU policies on OHS implementation as part of the welfare state benefit. The focus is on social, health, and industrial policies within welfare state regimes as well as EU policy-making processes affecting these policies in EU member states. The research tasks were divided into four groups related to the policy, functions, targets,and actors of OHS. The questions related to policy tried to discover the role of OHS in other policies, such as health, social, and labour market policies within the EU. The questions about functions sought to describe the changes, as well as the path dependence, of OHS in EU member states after the framework directive. The questions about targets were based on the general aims of WHO and the ILO in relation to equity, solidarity, universality, and access to OHS. The questions on actors were designed to understand the variety of stakeholders interested in OHS. The actors were supranational (EU, ILO, and WHO), national (ministries, institutes, and professional organisations), and social partners (trade unions and employers organisations). The study data were collected by interviewing 92 people in 15 EU member states, including representatives of ministries, institutions, research,trade unions, employers organisations, and occupational health organisations. Other documents were collected from the Internet,databases, libraries, and conference materials for a systematic review of the policies, strategies, organisation, financing, and monitoring of OHS in EU member states. Different analytical methods were used in the data analysis. The main findings of the study can be summarised as follows. First, occupational health services is a context-dependent phenomenon, which therefore varies according to the development of the welfare state in general, and depends on each country s culture, history, economy, and politics. The views of different stakeholders in EU member states concerning the impact and possibilities of OHS to improve health vary from evidence-based opinions to the sporadic impact of OHS on occupational health. OHS as a concept is vaguely defined by the EU, whereas the ILO defines OHS content. The tasks of OHS began as preventive and protective services for workers. However, they have moved towards multidisciplinary and organisational development as well as the workplace health promotion sphere.Since 1989 OHS has developed differently in different EU member states depending on the starting position of those states, but planning and implementation are crucial phases in the process toward better OHS coverage, equity, and access. Nevertheless, the data used for the planning and legitimisation of OHS activities are mainly based on occupational health data rather than on OHS data. This makes decisions on political or policy grounds inaccurate. OHS is still an evolving concept and benefit for workers, but the Europeanisation of OHS reflects contextual changes, such as the impact of the internal market, competition, and commercialisation on OHS. Stronger cooperation and integration with health, social, and employment services would be an asset for workers, because of new epidemics, an epidemiological shift towards new risks, an ageing labour market, and changes in the labour market. Different methods and approaches are needed in order to study the results of integrated services. In the future, more detailed information will be needed about the actual impact of EU policies on OHS and decision-making processes in order to get OHS into different policies in the EU and its member states. Further results and effects of OHS processes on occupational health need to be analysed more carefully. The adoption of a variety of research strategies and a multidisciplinary approach to understand the influence of different policies on OHS in the EU and its member states would highlight the options and opportunities to improve workers occupational health. Fundamentos: Apesar dos conhecimentos adquiridos sobre marcadores preditores de mortalidade na síndrome coronariana aguda (SCA), a capacidade de avaliação a longo prazo permanece desconhecida. O peptídeo natriurético tipo B (BNP) tem sido extensamente utilizado, porém as evidências existentes se restringem ao seguimento de curto e médio prazos. Objetivos: Determinar se o BNP é um preditor independente de mortalidade por todas as causas a longo prazo em pacientes com síndrome coronariana aguda sem supradesnível do segmento ST (SCASSST). Métodos: No período de 1o de Janeiro de 2002 a 31 de Dezembro de 2003, foram selecionados 224 pacientes consecutivos atendidos na sala de emergência com SCASSST. A dosagem do BNP à admissão foi incorporada no protocolo diagnóstico, tendo o seu valor sido correlacionado com a mortalidade ao final do seguimento. Resultados: Os pacientes foram acompanhados por 9,34 anos (mediana), tinham 71,5 anos (intervalo IQ=60,5;79,0) e com predomínio do gênero masculino (62,9%). A hipertensão arterial esteve presente em 82,1% e o diabetes em 23,7%. A angina instável (AI) foi diagnosticada em 52,2% e o infarto agudo do miocárdio sem supradesnível do segmento ST (IAMSSST) em 47,8%. O BNP mediano foi de 81,9 pg/ml (intervalo IQ 22,2; 225). A mortalidade se correlacionou com os quartis crescentes do BNP: 14,3; 16,1; 48,2; e 73,2% (p<0,0001). A curva ROC determinou o BNP=100 pg/ml como o melhor ponto de corte, tendo apresentado área sobre a curva (AUC) de 0,79 (IC 95%=0,72-0,85) e sendo preditor de mortalidade ao final do seguimento: 17,3% vs. 65,0%, p<0,001, RR=3,76 (IC 95%=2,49-5,63). O BNP teve poder prognóstico tanto nos pacientes com (26,7 vs. 71,2%, p<0,001) como nos sem (12,9 vs. 56,8%, p<0,001) alteração da função ventricular, e também conforme o diagnóstico de AI (18,7 vs. 48,6%, p=0,001) e IAMSSST (14,9 vs. 75,0%, p<0,001). Na análise de regressão logística, a idade>72 anos (OR=3,79, IC 95%=1,62-8,86, p=0,002), o BNP≥100 pg/ml (OR=6,24, IC 95%=2,95-13,23, p<0,001) e a taxa de filtração glomerular estimada (TFGE)(OR=0,98, IC 95%=0,97-0,99, p=0.049) foram preditores independentes de mortalidade. Conclusões: O BNP dosado à admissão dos pacientes com SCASSST é um forte e independente preditor de mortalidade a longo prazo.

This article looks at the EU's efforts to assist administrative reform in Eastern Europe, with particular attention to the twinning exercise, conceptually linked to Europeanization. The article argues that much of the debate on Europeanization has focused predominantly on the way in which existing member states are being transformed as a result of their participation in EU structures. Yet the political importance attached to EU membership by the accession applicants, as well as EU's determination to ensure compliance with the acquis communautaire prior to entry, indicates that Europeanization is not only confined to existing EU member states, but can be exported outside the geographical borders of the EU. Against this background the article argues that extending the scope of the Europeanization thesis beyond existing members can not only help us understand better the process of transformation in Eastern Europe and the ongoing accession negotiations, but can also contribute towards the refinement of the term's rather blurred conceptual content.

BNP Paribas es el primero en la zona euro y el sexto banco en importancia mundial. Para la realización del trabajo se formo un equipo y se realizaron nueve estudios de caso relacionados con Banca Particular, Soluciones de Inversión y Banca de Inversión y Corporativa.
