The inadequate land use in the low course of the river Acaraú is speeding up processes of erosion in some degrees. This process is accented in the areas where caatinga was removed for implantation of pastures and agriculture. Concomitantly, the plain of flooding of the river Acaraú an accumulation of sand with the carry of these sediments, resulting in the widening of the fluvial plain and reduction of the shape water, with increase of the evapotranspiration and consequence salinization, proceeding from the local substratum. This paper aimed at the crossing of diverse space information (geomorfology, soil, declivity, geology and land use) in environment SIG, for determination of the susceptible areas to the erosion and an accumulation of sand in the low course of the Acaraú river, north of the State of the Ceará, Brazil. The results allow to evaluate the application of this tool in the planning and management of the environment, from the crossing of the type of use with the used environment and the consequent impact to the ecosystem.

The theory of erosive burning has been constructed front first principles using turbulent boundary layer concepts. It is shown that the problem constitutes one of solution of flame propagation equation for turbulent flow. The final approximate solution for the case of single step overall kinetics reveals the combined effects of fluid mechanics and chemical kinetics. The results obtained from this theory are compared with earlier experimental results. The dependence of erosive burning characteristics on various parameters has been elucidated.

This paper considers the extensive data and correlations on the erosive burning of solid propellants. A relatively simple nondimensional relationship between the ratio of the actual to nonerosive burn rate (eta) and a quantity g, which is the product of g(0)-the ratio of free stream mass flux to the mass flux from the surface for nonerosive condition-and Re-0(m), where Re-0 is the Reynolds number based on the nonerosive mass flux of the propellant and port diameter, is shown to correlate most data within the accuracies of the experiments with m = -0.125. This shows the above relationship to account for the effects of pressure, aluminum, even up to a proportion of 17%, burn rate catalysts, and motor size. It is concluded that the suggested correlation between eta and g may be adopted universally for most practical propellants. (C) 1997 by The Combustion Institute.

This paper aims at extending the universal erosive burning law developed by two of the present authors from axi-symmetric internally burning grains to partly symmetric burning grains. This extension revolves around three dimensional flow calculations inside highly loaded grain geometry and benefiting from an observation that the flow gradients normal to the surface in such geometries have a smooth behavior along the perimeter of the grain. These are used to help identify the diameter that gives the same perimeter the characteristic dimension rather than a mean hydraulic diameter chosen earlier. The predictions of highly loaded grains from the newly chosen dimension in the erosive burning law show better comparison with measured pressure-time curves while those with mean hydraulic diameter definitely over-predict the pressures. An experimental study of the properties of hydrodynamic forces upon a marine pipeline is presented in this paper, in the equilibrium scour conditions for various Keulegan-Carpenter numbers and various initial relative gaps between pipeline and the erosive sandy seabed. The tests are conducted in a U-shaped oscillatory water tunnel with a sand box located at the bottom of the test section. According to the experimental results, the maximum horizontal forces on the pipelines with an initial gap to seabed will decrease to some extent due to scouring process. For engineering appliances, it seems safer to estimate wave induced forces on pipelines under the assumption that seabed is plane. However, it should be noticed that great changes would be brought to the frequency properties of lift forces because of the sandy scour beneath the pipeline, which occurs for certain KC numbers.
